Michelle Williams Talks About Breakup With Spike Jonze

It seems like just yesterday that Michelle Williams was church-shopping for a possible venue to wed her director beau Spike Jonze in.

Alas, such nuptials are not to be. Williams confirms in the October issue of Vogue that she and Jonze have called it quits.

Says Williams, who began dating Jonze in July 2008, following the death of her ex Heath Ledger,

“The timing was impossible. I thought falling in love again was the only thing that was going to save me from the pain. This erroneous idea: It just makes things more complicated.”

Williams adds that attempting to date while playing single parent to her and Ledger’s three-year-old daughter, Matilda, also complicated matters, lamenting, “I obviously don’t know how to do it.”

The former Dawson’s Creek actress also opens up about the long, slow healing process that she’s undergone in the wake of Ledger’s death:

“I was holding it together by a string and a paper clip in the fall and winter. I didn’t know if I could keep it all together…You console yourself by saying it’s all a deepening process. But it’s weird. After the first year, the pain is less intense—it’s less immediate. But the magical thinking goes away too. And that’s a whole new reckoning.”
