Miley Cyrus, Song Thief?

May 15, 2008 at 3:18pm

Two days ago she robbed the country of a sound night’s sleep with her beyond-creepy “Got Milk?” ad.

Now Miley Cyrus is accused of lifting another artist’s melody in her song “Rockstar.”

Los Angeles quartet Lustra claims Cyrus’ song bears similarities to its own tune “Scotty Doesn’t Know” that strain the bounds of coincidence.

The New York Post quotes Lustra guitarist Nick Cloutman as saying, “Although we are very flattered that Ms. Cyrus took this route, we would have preferred some credit.”

While Cloutman adds that his group, described as “rock/punk/alternative” on its MySpace page, is “considering options to rectify this situation,” a rep for Cyrus was quick to deflect blame from the tween-pop sensation. “She doesn’t write the songs, she sings them. We have referred this [matter] to Disney,” a Miley mouthpiece stated.

Should the allegations prove to have merit, it’s unclear who should be more embarrassed by the situation: Miley, for biting someone else’s melody, or Lustra, for being a “rock/punk/alternative” band that writes songs soft and mainstream enough for Disney to pilfer.
