New Moon Makes History Despite Bad Reviews
Well, it’s official—last night’s midnight screenings of New Moon raked in $26.27M and beat the record held by the Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince for most advance sales of any film ever!
Fans may be loving the on-screen chemistry between Rob Pattinson and Kristen Stewart (or Taylor Lautner, if thats your thing), but critics are not so keen on the Vampire flick.
Roger Ebert claims that the film’s characters “charisma is by Madame Tussaud.”
The Boston Globe remarks “Sorry, girls: The thrill is gone,” adding that “where the first film’s director, Catherine Hardwicke, plugged into [author Stephenie] Meyer’s vision of supernatural teenage lust with abandon, Chris Weitz is stuck with a sequel that’s a morning-after mope-fest.”
And Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times says Lautner and Kristen Stewart lack any sort of chemistry. “The connection between these two is so self-evidently non-romantic that it turns out not to be much of a diversion.”
The movie is expected to make $100 million over the weekend.
Have you seen New Moon yet? Do you agree with the critics?

“Makes history!?!” Exaggerate much? This record will be broken just like this crappy movie broke the records set by the brilliant films: Half Blood Prince and The Dark Knight. Records are made to be broken. But I’m seriously disappointed in what 12 year old American girls choose to spend their money on.
I saw the movie last night, and I would have to disagree with the critics who say there is no connection between Kristen and Taylor. The scenes where those 2 were involved were wayy better than I expected. But, that’s just my opinion :) and if you’re a fan of the books – this movie is for you!
I have seen it three times already here in Russia and I thought it was amazing and that Chris did a great job of being true to the book and characters! The actors did a great job as well. I wonder if the critics EVEN read the books?
Obviously the critics have not read the books. The second book is a sob fest and is sad and is depressing. Of course the movie is going to be the same way. Also, there is not suppose to be this huge love connection between Jacob (Taylor) and Bella (Kristen). Their relationship is just starting. Book 3 (and Movie 3) is where it gets COMPLICATED. Don’t write a review, if you don’t know your sh*t. Like what was said above…if you’re a fan of the books, you love the movie!!!
it just what a person feels on a movie, and i have seen new moon, and i didn’t like it. it did nothing for me, that’s just me. not
I saw the movie last night it was way better than Twilight and very true to the book. Critics don’t know everything this is the second movie I’ve seen in the past month they hated that I loved. So screw them!
To be perfectly honest, I wasn’t expecting much for New Moon even though I did like the clips that I’d seen. I’m suprised that the critics haven’t warmed to it as much as I did. I mean a lot of them have given the film 2 stars and in my opinion it AT LEAST deserves 3, but hey, critics aren’t always right.
Saw it a about 30 min ago! Loved it. Chris Weitz did a way better job that Catherine. He kept to the book and explained things as she did not!
I’m a fan of the book and I didn’t love the film at all. Not that I was a fan of the first film either. Whilst New Moon is about heart break and Bella’s struggle to cope with the sudden loss of Edward, I found the key scenes that would truely show her pain were poorly peformed. Whilst I have no aversions to Kristen Stewart I just found her emotionally detached at times…I personally didn’t feel it. Chris definately tried to keep to the book and there were definately more links between the film the book which lacked in the first one. Charlie Swan was not in it enough, Alice was great and Jacob was alright. I know many people will probably disagree with me but that’s what I think. After all the image created in my mind will never reflect the interpretation of the director. But like ‘Me’ says…records are meant to be broken and i’m sure the next installment of Harry Potter will break the recod.
Surely the critics did not read the books so they are not in any position to criticize. As for the actors and the directors, they had to make do with the material which is by the way “light.”.I mean they had to follow the book and we all know how juvenile the book is.For me the book is just purely 4 entertaining purposes and it’s nothing intellectual but i love it just the same. So overall, the actors and director simply had to do their best with it and I think they just did.Nobody should have expected so much other than for fun and entertainment. As i,ve said, the books are purely 4 entertainment-for fun.

preach! because that is so true…the movie was AWESOME!!!!
I just watched the movie and it was awesome!! the essence of the book was portrayed well!! Although Taylor did an awesome job, Kstew is really the one who is the asset of this franchise. The movie is PG because the books are very PG however I think they all did a great job !!! I might just go see it again!! Critics are wrong this time sorry!!

So true… but i was just hopping it would be like crying depressing (like the book) i guess thats why people didnt see the connection beetwen kristen and taylor… but the movie is for fans only and sorry but its a mayority.. :)
no chemistry and bella was detached i agree. the teenage life and the sadness of the loss was not felt. little acting, more action and special effects is what ruined it for me. i love the books and the 1st movie but if she had done it instead of this new guy it would have been better.he missed the point of the book.he got the story right, kept to the book but it felt dry. jacob was so hot though. to be fair the movie had its good parts.
i went and seen the movie last nite and i am a big fan,i have read all 4 books many times,i think NEW MOON was good but not what i thought it would be,parts were slow and some of the acting was not that great, don’t get me wrong i lvoe the Twilight novels and i really loved the first movie,i guess i have mixed fellings, but i will be a fan all the way untill the end,and i am on the team edward side,i am just not sure how i feel.
Good movie but could have been better.
New Moon was AWESOME! Catherine Hardwicke butchered the first movie. This was a million times better than that load of crap. Taylor was really perfect for the role and jacob, and i thought Rob and Kristen’s acting had really improved from the first one. Over all.. two very excited thumbs up. GO SEE IT!

hmm.. I’m a fan of all the books and like the first movie wasn’t bad, however New Moon was not good at all. If you knew acting you would see that Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson have barely any talent at all. What a let down….
Also to add to my comment before, you shouldn’t have to read a book to understand or like a movie. Critics can criticize a movie without reading it, in fact they shouldn’t have to read a book to explain why something happened in a movie and that is why not all movies have books.
Poor screenwriting. I’m amazed that the most essential chapters in new moon were left out I.E. IMPRINTING and I agree, no connection with Taylor and Kristen which made the movie excruciatingly painful to watch. There is however great chemistry with Rob, that I felt cheated of because there was not nearly enough of.
i dont agree with da critics at all!! da movie was one hell of a rush!! i enjoyed every second…..this was exactly what i imagined as i was reading da book….and much more=) da endin was amazing
Wrong. Wrong. wrong!
Please, New Moon was absolutley amazingg!!
Try reading the books before youu start to jugde the movies.
Could care less what critics say, it was even better than Twilight. Annd they will continue advancingg!

__Completly AGREE! expeciallyy about the actingg improvingg!
I went to go see New Moon earlier tonight and didn’t get to;; it was sold out! :( I wanna see it soooooooo bad!
Alright. i am a diehard or “twihard” fan! I have read all the books several times and the first movie i thought to be pretty good. i saw new moon twice today and i was very disappointed. I agree that the connection between jacob and bella was disconnected and if it wasnt for taylor’s incredibly amazing looks i would have found myself very bored through the middle. i felt that most of the acting was not very good and the graphics for the werewolves was not good AT ALL. also, although i personally knew what was going on i thought that the overall flow of the film was very poorly done and confusing. and edward…..could his lines have been any more cliche?! i respect that the director was trying to stay true to the book but i have to honestly say i didnt enjoy the movies as much as i wanted to.
I am a huge fan of the Twilight Saga and New Moon captured Bella’s struggle to cope with Edward leaving and her new-found friendship with Jacob. These critics cannot expect every twilight movie to be filled with nothing but romance especially when thats not whats uncovered until the very end. Edward then realizes that he cannot live without his Bella. And Bella is able to feel whole again with Edward at her side. But she also struggles with keeping Jacob as a very close friend. So next time critics decide to talk sh*t about a movie because the didn’t bother to read the book that started it all, then i suggest they do so!
Seriously, the fan’s opinions are what matters not just in “New Moon”, but in any movie. I, personally, never listen to critics. I decide for myself if a movie delivers or not. I don’t need some “movie expert” telling me what’s good or bad about them. IMO, moviegoers should be their own critic. They are not any different from you, aside from the fact that they get paid to criticize a movie and write about it for a magazine or newspaper. So, who cares if they didn’t like “New Moon”?!? I’ve seen it twice and plan to see it again this weekend.
Sorry but I must agree to the critics. I saw the movie, here in Greece, and it wasn’t as good as I had expected…. :-(
The supernatural thing, that it was on Twilight movie, was gone. The vampires were the same as humans…. and I didn’t like it!
i lloooveeeeeeeee the ovie new moon! and also robert pattinson!!! critics suck
critics are just jealous1!!!!! we love new oon and robert apttinson

I couldnt agree more! I used to be a fan of the books but no longer am after i started reading Harry Potter i realized how crappy twilight really is and how it is so over exaggerated.
I agree that this is a movie for the disney channel generation and is crap. Is this a horror movie or the jonas brothers with fangs? Once again 12 year old girls rule the big screen and the movie makers will continue pumping out this crap for years to come.
I thought the movie was good – however – a bit of a pacing problem and really wanted more Volturi scenes, and more wolf pack scenes…..
Type your comment here.I loved the first Twilight with the exception of the fake vampire running and tree climbing scenes.Katherine Hardwicke captured the magic in Stephanie Meyers book. I had High hopes that New Moon would be just as good or even better. I was sadly disapointed in the chopped up mess of movie that Chris weintz created, he totally blew it. There were only a couple of good scenes but the movie just didnt have the magic or flow of its first movie. For some reason even Rob Pattinson didnt look as handsome .The music didnt leave me with the feeling that i had to go out and buy the cd. Nor do i have the urge to go see it multiple times at the theater like i did with the first movie. BTW, I have never ever saw a movie at theater move than once before Twilight. Thumbs down for me, i was really disappointed with New Moon.
So what if the critics didn’t read the books?? It’s not their job to read, it’s their job to watch movies.
lol you guys are so pathetic. NEW MOON BEAT HALF BLOOD PRINCE. get over it!!!
ugh, you harry potter people just disgust me. you’ll say anything to defend HP despite the fact that twilight is taking over. it beat HP now, and it’ll beat it again. harry potter has been here since 2000 and something (i’m not a HP fan, so who cares?) and twilight just comes out 2008 and it’s already beating it. haha
I have seen the movie and I love it, I agreed with mohoff88, I think that Chris do a verry great work and yes The connection between Jacob and bella its complecated in the 3th book..
I really love the movie even my friend was crying (: lol!
The critics are just trying to ‘be different’ and not seem like they are obsessed by saying those awful things, but i bet when they get home their rooms are plastered with new moon posters. And another thing, Twilight was a grain of sand compared to New Moon! NEW MOON WAS TEN TIMES BETTER!!!

you a very right. another movie will definitely break new moon records. those of you who can’t see that are seriously in denial. i have not seen the movie, but just as you said, movies always get their records broken. people are all hyped about new moon making history, but records get smashed all the time. im pretty sure that new moon won’t be any different. so far people have told me that it is bad, but i still kinda want to see it and make my own judgment. i agree that harry potter is a more unique read then the twilight sagas.
i watched the movie yesterday and it was good but not intense as the first i think catherine hardwick does a better job then christ soory

I feel offended. i’m 15(16 in a month), i’m not american but whatever…. point is… i like twilight because of the books and i would like to see what the filmmakers can do. and i dont think im the only one offended here. YOU should keep your comments to yourself or post them on some sort of hate pages.
I saw the movie last night and I loved it. It exceeded my expectations, and yes I would see it again

WTF? your comment makes absolutely no sense at all. you are not american yet you are offended by a comment somebody made about american girls? she and other people have the right to leave comments here and say whatever they want to (whether they are fans of twilight or not). you don’t get the right to edit anyone, nor do you have the right to tell people to keep their comments to themselves. in a america we exercise our right of free speech. get over it.
I agree, most of the critics that are giving this movie a bad review probably have no clue what the books are about. However, despite what most of you think, the critics have EVERY right to criticize this movie without reading the books. It is, after all, their job to criticize movies…not books, and they’re doing just that. I think most people are trying to take the greatness of the book series and apply it to the movies making their opinions very biased. Remember this was a movie…not a book. Personally, I think the movie was rather dull. I felt no intensity in the storyline or relationships. Perhaps if they spent less time on abs so solid you could crack a walnut on and more time on the movie it would have been better. Last I checked, the book series wasn’t about abs. The third movie will most likely be better. The guy that directed 30 days of night is doing the third one, so everyone that didn’t “feel it” this time around should get their thirst quenched in the third. Anyways, if you need something to help you fall asleep, find a website with crack movies and throw on New Moon.

i feel like they didnt make these movies for the people who havent read the books. they made these movies knowing that they already had a huge following and regardless if the general public thinks they are good or not doesnt matter to them, because they know in the end the fans of the books are what is going to get them through in the box office. the true fans dont really care about what people who havent read the books are saying about the movies, cause they know they wouldnt understand it as much, and i think it was made to be that way. but that’s just my opinion. i loove the twilight novels, and read them a long time ago before all of this hype started, and i still love it. the movies arent what i wished they were, but i still watch them just because i love the books so much.
well, everyone i no that went to see new moon liked it :’)
[quote=Nina]lol you guys are so pathetic. NEW MOON BEAT HALF BLOOD PRINCE. get over it!!!

yeah, about you. obviously you arent a real literary fan because most people who enjoy the style of the twilight novels, also really enjoyed harry potter while growing up. i love harry potter and waiting in line to see that too, im not angry about new moon beating harry potter, i think that its cool that they are going against one another, cause its all the same fans for the most part. except for the fact that there are no men in the theatre watching twilight, haha… only women.
“Clearly the critics did not read the books” that is such a lame ass excuse. They didn’t read them because they are FILM critics not teenage girls! A movie should be good without reading the books. I’ve never read Harry Potter but i love the movies. I think you Twilight fans just pretend to like the movies because you like the books so much.
I personally don’t care what the critics say! Im a twihard! And even though it got bad reviews i still went and saw it! And i liked it! Yeah.it coud have been better but it didnt suck!
