Ah, the late-’90s-slash-early-’00s. Bubblegum pop reigned supreme. These were the years of Britney, Christina, The Spice Girls — and, to a lesser extent, Jessica Simpson, Ricky Martin, and Mandy Moore. And then there were the larger-than-life boy bands: The Backstreet Boys, ‘N Sync, and, sure, we’ll throw 98 Degrees in there for good measure.

Now we have The Wanted and One Direction, but somehow it doesn’t feel the same. (I’m sure this has nothing to do with the fact that I’ve aged what feels like 196 years, though it’s actually only 15.)

The Backstreet Boys are the best-selling boy band of all time, with more than 130 million records sold. Unlike ‘N Sync, the group is still recording music, which is great news for those of us who like hearing new material performed live on cruise ships.

98 Degrees sold more than 10 million albums in just four years. Like The Backstreet Boys, the boys reunited after a hiatus and are currently gearing up to release new music. They will soon tour with New Kids on the Block and Boyz II Men. #NeverForget Nick Lachey’s marriage to Jessica Simpson and their MTV reality show.

The members of 98 Degrees are picking up the “Microphone” again.

Over a decade after dropping their sophomore smash, Revelation, the 90s boy band is back with a brand-new single — and look. Though their full album, 2.0, doesn’t hit shelves until May 7, 98 Degrees is kicked off their comeback by debuting the cover art for their first single, “Microphone,” due on iTunes on Tuesday.

The recently-reunited quartet — comprised of Nick Lachey, 39, his younger brother Drew, 36, Jeff Timmons, 39, and Justin Jeffre, 39 — strike a pose in complementary midnight-blue suits, some buttoned-up with a tie while others effort the more laid-back look of an undone bowtie.

Just weeks after releasing their new album, the group will hit the road with Boyz II Men and New Kids on the Block for The Package Tour, kicking off in Connecticut on May 28 and coming to a close in in Indiana on Aug. 4.

“We’re excited to get back together and doing what we do,” Nick Lachey said of returning to his roots with his bandmates. “We feel reinvigorated by our bond and by our group, so we’re very excited by that.”

Fans are blaming Taylor Swift for reported tensions within her boyfriend Harry Styles‘ super-group One Direction — but one former boy-bander is insistent: she’s not the new Yoko Ono.

“I think that Yoko Ono was unfairly treated,” 98 Degrees singer Justin Jeffre told Celebuzz of the woman married to John Lennon and widely blamed for the breakup of The Beatles. “And I have sympathy for Taylor Swift as well.”

Drama surfaced on Sunday when Swift attended 1D’s X Factor performance in Manchester and then flew with Styles from Heathrow Airport to New York on her private jet.

The rest of 1D reportedly traveled domestic — and fumed that they weren’t offered a ride on the luxury plane.

But Jeffre believes that Swift can shake off the subsequent comparisons to Ono, who married Beatles member John Lennon in 1969.

“Boy band fans can be really passionate, and that can be difficult for girlfriends, but I’m sure Taylor and Harry will be able to work it out,” he said. “I think they will be fine.”

“It helps that both are  famous in their own right,” he continued, “because they have an insight into what that is like, and they can help one another.”

In their heyday, 98 Degrees had something in common with 1D: loads of adoring females clamoring after them as they jet-setted around the world. The group — comprised of Jeffre, Nick Lachey, Drew Lachey and Jeff Timmons — sold over 10 million records worldwide and had eight Top 40 hits in America.

But the rocky road to stardom was smoothed out by the group’s brotherly bond.

“We were lucky because we were really supportive of one another,” said Jeffre, who’s getting ready to go back into the studio with 98 Degrees while maintaining a career as a political activist. “Those guys were my best friends — they still are. Most of the other guys were in relationships, and I was actually the one that chose to be single, but that was just a personal choice.”

Lachey, for one, famously wed Jessica Simpson in 2002; the couple — who starred in MTV’s Newlyweds — divorced four years later.

Styles and Swift, meanwhile, went public with their relationship after being spotted holding hands at an X-Factor taping in Los Angeles last month.  Previously, Swift has been linked to the likes of Joe Jonas, John Mayer, Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor Kennedy.

Its been more than 10 years since the members of 98 Degrees performed together, but on Friday, the 1990s group took the TODAY stage by storm.

98 Degrees – Nick Lachey, his brother Drew Lachey, Jeff Timmons and Justin Jeffre — performed a few of their greatest hits, from “The Hardest Thing” to “Because of You,” much to the delight of the hundreds of fans who amassed on Rockefeller Plaza hoping to catch a glimpse of their favorite 90s boy band.

The group kept things simple, wearing all black ensembles and perfecting their Motown moves, as frontman Nick took the lead on the vocals. The band teased the prospect touring this year — after their Aug. 18 night gig at the Summer Mixtape Festival in Hershey, Pa. — they admitted that they’re just happy to be back on stage again.

But is there a 98 Degrees album in the works? 

Now it looks like the group has been spending some time in the studio recording new music. Lachey told Today host Savannah Guthrie that the band has some new projects in the works.

In February, Timmons sparked rumors of a reunion tour when he told a news outlet in the Philippines that there had been discussions for a 98 Degrees reunion, but nothing had been confirmed yet at that time. Although, the former boybander seemed hopeful.

“We’ve been talking of 98 Degrees getting back together for a reunion show,” he said. “Nothing’s out of the question but nothing’s solidified. We’ll see.”

Timmons, alongside brothers Nick and Drew Lachey and Jeffre, formed the group in Los Angeles in 1995. Coincidentally, all members of the band were originally from Ohio. A little more than two years later, the group released its debut album, with the lead single, “Invisible Man.”

98 Degrees went on to release eight Top-40 singles, including “Thank God I Found You,” which featured pop diva Mariah Carey, and “Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche).”

Since announcing the band’s extended hiatus in 2002, the members of 98 Degrees have pursued individual projects. Drew Lachey won in the second season of Dancing with the Stars, and recently joined the ABC dance competition’s all-stars season. Dancing With the Stars: All Stars will premiere Mon., Sept. 24, at 8 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile brother Nick released two solo albums and was the host of the a capella talent search series The Sing-Off, until the singing competition was canceled. Lachey is currently taking part in the NBC reality show Stars Earn Stripes. As for the other member of 98 Degrees, Jeffre ran for mayor of Cincinatti, Ohio, while Timmons released his own solo albums and toured internationally.

Given the success of current boy bands — One Direction and The Wanted — in the U.S., there has never been a more opportune time for 90s pop bands to relaunch their careers. After all, 98 Degrees isn’t the only pop act from the 1990s to reunite in 2012.

The Spice Girls not only performed at the 2012 London Olympic closing ceremony, but they’re premiering their new musical Viva Forever at the Piccadilly Theatre in London in November. At the helm of the girl power musical is the ab fab Jennifer Saunders, who created and starred in the popular British comedy series, Absolutely Fabulous. All five Spice Girls – Geri Halliwell (Ginger Spice), Emma Bunton (Baby Spice), Melanie Chisholm (Sporty Spice), Melanie Brown (Scary Spice) and Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) — have been involved in the musical’s production.

Meanwhile, the Backstreet Boys will reunite on the Good Morning America stage on Aug. 29. The “I Want It That Way” singers have been touring steadily throughout the decade, but this will mark the first performance will all five original members. Singer Kevin Richardson, 40, left the group six years ago to focus on his film career. One vampire movie later, and Richardon is now back with the boys —  A. J. McLean, Howie Dorough, Brian Littrell and Nick Carter. The Backstreet Boys are currently planning a 2013 album release and world tour to celebrate their 20th anniversary.

We’re not the only ones excited by the talk of a reunion, Howie D – who is part of the boy band reunion NKOTBSB – is voicing his support, exclusively telling Celebuzz:

“I think it’s really cool that 98 degrees is getting back together. We had such a successful NKOTBSB tour this past summer, and I hope the same for them. I’ll definitely be there.”

Howie, who is hitting the road for the NKOTBSB world tour next month, has plenty of advice for Lachey and his fellow bandmates.

“My advice to them would be to go for it 100% and have fun. There’s nothing like performing for your fans, especially after being gone for so long. The girls are going to eat it up.”
