Bam Margera is setting the record straight.

The former Jackass star recently landed himself in hot water after tweeting a photo of himself holding a fake gun to his puppy’s head with the message, “If she poops one more time, she goes bye bye.”

“It was bad timing on my part,” Margera, 33, tells Celebuzz exclusively on Tuesday’s The Daily Buzz. However, the former MTV star — who says he likes to “use humor with shock value” – maintains that he was only joking.

“I don’t think it was a joke gone bad,” he says. “The fact that Chester County had a few people who were burning dogs in the county… If I had known what just happened [in the county], I never would have done that.”

As for the toy gun Margera was seen holding, the former television star reveals that the fake firearm is nothing more than a safety measure.

“My friend gave me a fake gun after a stalker was found in my house,” he says. “He said, ‘If you ever have a stalker in your house again, you can scare them with this.’”

Shortly after Margera posted the photos on his Twitter account, the SPCA of Chester County, Pa., paid Margera and his family a visit. After numerous reports of dogs being tortured in the area, rumors ran rampant that Margera was a part of it. However, he was later cleared of all speculation.

“If I was doing something stupid like Michael Vick,” he said, “I wouldn’t have tweeted it.”

The self-described “animal lover” already owns six cats, but unfortunately due to his busy travel schedule, Margera is in the process of finding a new home for his little pup.

“I thought I could handle having another dog, but it’s like having a kid,” he laughed. “So, I’ll find her a new home.”

In the meantime, perhaps Margera should heed his mother’s advice. “I’ve told him you’ve got to make better choices with your sense of humor,” April Margera told us. “The world has changed and there are some things you just can’t do.”

Some things are better left un-tweeted.

Bam Margera shocked his more-than 800,000 Twitter followers when he posted a photo of him holding a fake gun to his puppy’s head, with a message that read if the dog made a mess in his bed again, “Penny goes Bye Byes.” Margera then tweeted a series of photos in which he held the toy gun up to his friends’ faces.

Animal rights activists were not amused by the Jackass star’s puppy prank. SPCA spokesman Rich Britton released a statement, saying Margera “missed the mark on this one.”

Now, Margera has released his own apology. 

Margera, 33, told reporters at his Philadelphia home that he condemns animal abuse and didn’t mean any harm by the photographs.

“I think those people need to go down,” he said animal abusers. “Just hurting another animal is rude, crude, and more.”

However, the former MTV star, who said he doesn’t even own a gun, told the media that he was only joking. ”I feel like every follower I have on Twitter knows my Jackass joking kind of humor,” he said.

Judging by the amount of ink that Bam Margera has, it was a safe assumption that he’d very likely be adding a tribute tattoo in honor of his Jackass co-star and best friend, Ryan Dunn.

Dunn, who died in a fiery car crash in late June, is now forever immortalized on Margera’s chest. The tattoo, just below Margera’s left shoulder, is a facial portrait of the bearded Dunn with the wording “Random Hero” beneath his face.

Dunn’s life came to an abrupt end on June 28 following a night of drinking at a local Pennsylvania bar when his car — reportedly going in excess of 140 miles per hour on a local road — went out of control, jumped a guardrail and crashed into a tree. The impact is said to have killed Dunn instantly, and resulted in the car bursting into flames.

Following the death of Jackass star Ryan Dunn, his best friend Bam Margera gave his first interview since the tragic passing, and he was clearly overwhelmed with sadness as he spoke with a local reporter.

Speaking with the local Fox station, Margera sobbed as he spoke about his late friend, who was killed early Monday morning after his Porsche flew off of a local road and slammed into a tree, bursting into flames. Through tears, Margera said despite being thousands of miles away, he had a wild reaction the moment of Dunn’s crash:

“I was in Arizona when I heard. I was with friends having the best time ever and at 12:30 I just started punching out the windows of the rental van … I don’t even know why … it was exactly when he crashed.”

Margera, in between bouts of sobbing, continued, saying: “He was the happiest person ever. The smartest guy — he had so much talent and so many things going for him. It’s just not right.”

Toxicology reports are pending for Dunn, though hours before his death he posted photos on Twitter showing him at a bar, drinking with friends. Local reports claim he had three beers and three shots before driving home that night.

Van Toffler, President of MTV Networks Music/Films Group, issued a statement to Dunn’s death on Monday, saying:

“We are devastated by the tragic loss of Ryan Dunn – a beloved member of the MTV family for more than a decade. He made us all laugh and had the tireless enthusiastic approach to life of your favorite middle school friend. Our thoughts and deepest condolences are with Ryan’s family and friends. The Jackass brotherhood will never be the same.”

In reaction to Dunn’s death, celebs and friends alike took to Twitter to remember Dunn. Jackass leader Johnny Knoxville opened his heart on Twitter, saying: “Today I lost my brother Ryan Dunn. My heart goes out to his family and his beloved Angie. RIP Ryan , I love you buddy.” His other Jackass co-star Jason “Wee-Man” Acuna said in a Tweet: “I MISS YOU BUD!! You were always a happy kick-ass dude!!”

Bam Margera is having one terrible summer. First, he was attacked by a bat-weilding woman outside of a bar in June, and now the Jackass star may have had something slipped into his drink.

Margera made headlines earlier this week when he was ejected from New Zealand’s Auckland Airport and detained after showing up at the airport in what police called a “very intoxicated” state. But Margera’s pal, Chad Ginsburg, says that the Jackass and Viva La Bam star might have been unwittingly exposed to the date-rape drug Rohypnol. Ginsburg, who performs in the band CKY with Margera’s brother Jesse and was the first to confirm Margera’s Auckland detention, Tweeted yesterday,

“Bam finally made it to our gig in perth, turns out he was f*cking roofied at one of our shows in nz and was incapacitated!”

Margera was turned away from the airport after reportedly acting obnoxiously toward passengers and staff. According to an airport spokesperson, there were “concerns about letting them fly in that state.”

In June, Bam was attacked with a bat by a woman outside of a Pennsylvania bar. He was hospitalized and released days later. The skater-turned-TV/movie star was also hospitalized last July following a “possible overdose,” though his mother April claimed that her son was merely “severely dehydrated.”

Bam Margera didn’t have such a great weekend.

TMZ reports that the Jackass star was whisked away to the hospital on Sunday by paramedics who rushed to his West Chester, Pennsylvania, home after receiving a 911 call about a “possible overdose.”

Apparently, Bam didn’t learn much from his Jackass co-star Steve-O‘s experiences with drugs.

Coming to Bam’s rescue on the PR end of things is his mother, April Margera, who called in to Philly radio station WMMR on Monday to downplay the whole “took too many drugs” aspect of the story.

April told the radio station that her son had become “severely dehydrated” while filming stunts for his Jackass knockoff Nitro Circus.

So it wasn’t drugs, it was dehydration, eh? Nice to see some people stick with the classics.
