Disney has officially announced its first three cast members for the upcoming screen adaptation of Into The Woods. Meryl Streep and Johnny Depp are set to star as well as British actor James Corden.

Streep and Depp, of course, require no introduction, but Corden — who is playing the Baker — will be mostly unfamiliar to American audiences. He did, however, win the Tony Award last year for his starring role in One Man, Two Guvnors. The film will be directed by Rob Marshall, who has previously directed the big screen adaptations of  Broadway hits Chicago and Nine.

Into the Woods, written by Stephen Sondheim, weaves the stories of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales together, taking characters from “The Little Red Riding Hood,” “Jack and the Beanstalk,” “Cinderella” and “Rapunzel.” It made its Broadway debut in 1987 and has been a favorite ever since. This is to be the first film adaptation of the play, however, after two previous planned productions fell through in the ’90s.

In its casting announcement released today, Disney also confirms that Meryl Streep will be playing the villainous (or is she?) Witch and Depp will play the Wolf. Both had been rumored to be attached to the project, but today’s announcement is the first official confirmation.

Streep and Depp have never worked together previously, though they were originally supposed to star together in Sweeney Todd, Streep’s role eventually went to Helena Bonham Carter.

According to Disney’s press release, none of the show’s other parts have been filled including the lead role of the Baker’s Wife. Filming is set to begin in September of this year in London.

Later this year, Hollywood will release its own big, grand Hollywood version of August: Osage County, the critically acclaimed Broadway play that won a boatload of Tonys and the Pulitzer Prize in 2008.

This version stars Meryl Streep as pill-popping matriarch Violet Weston, and Julia Roberts as her disgruntled daughter, Barbara. There’s also Ewan McGregor, Benedict Cumberbatch, Chris Cooper, Abigail Breslin, Juliette Lewis and a whole bunch of other famous faces, too. Basically, this is Broadway to The Butler‘s national tour.

Whether the movie version will live up to the success of the play remains to be seen; Meryl already seems to be reaching high for an accent, which is never a great sign. Still, the movie is being backed by Harvey Weinstein, so at the very least, we’ll see it at the Globes.

Tom Hanks is your dad. Tom Hanks is your president. Tom Hanks is your king. According to a poll conducted by Reader’s Digest and The Wagner Group, Tom Hanks is the most trusted person in America.

What’s unclear is why people trust Tom Hanks. I mean, I guess he doesn’t seem particularly untrustworthy, but it’s just that he’s not poison testing my food or reporting the news or really performing any societal function in which my level of trust in him would be important. Granted, the sample group is only 1,000 people so it’s hardly scientific. Reader’s Digest proclaims the poll’s results to be “revealing, hopeful and sometimes shocking,” they are none of the three.

Seth MacFarlane may have given the Oscars a ratings boost this year, but the funnyman won’t be back for the 2014 edition.

In response to a fan’s question about whether or not he’d host again, the 39-year-old wrote, “No way. Lotta fun to have done it, though” on Twitter late Monday night.

According to the Los Angeles Times, Sunday’s telecast was viewed by more than 40 million viewers, an increase from last year’s Billy Crystal show and James Franco and Anne Hathaway’s Oscars disaster the year before.

In their place: MacFarlane and his tune about boobs, plus daring (and uncomfortable) jabs like the one about 9-year-old Quvenzhane Wallis being almost the right age for George Clooney.

The Girl on Fire ignited a little friction during the Golden Globes.

As Jennifer Lawrence took home the award for Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy, the first-time Golden Globe winner shocked viewers (and the evening’s attendees) when she jokingly uttered, “I beat Meryl,” during her acceptance speech at Sunday night’s star-studded ceremony.

But the slight on Streep, who wasn’t in attendance due to a case of the flu, wasn’t ill-intended. Lawrence was referencing a scene from the 1996 comedy The First Wives Club, starring Goldie Hawn, Bette Midler and Diane Keaton.

“In the film, Bette Midler’s character says to Goldie Hawn’s character, “Once you were a terrific actress. You even got an Oscar to prove it.” Bette’s character sees and touches the golden statue in the scene, saying, “‘I beat Meryl.’ That’s what it says,” Access Hollywood explained.

Although her quip garnered a few laughs at the Beverly Hilton, the Twitterverse may have missed out on the joke. The proof: the reference prompted an online frenzy among viewers and celebrities alike.

“WOAH…OOPS, Jennifer Lawrence – Whoops.. “I BEAT MERYL”???!!! Who says that?” Dancing with the Stars judge Carrie Ann Inaba tweeted.

“Just heard Jennifer Lawrence win something. She beat Meryl?” Parks and Recreation actress Retta posted alongside a photo of herself looking surprised.

“You can’t say “I beat Meryl”. Oh no oh no no no,” indie singer Ingrid Michaelson wrote. Adding: “No one. Ever. Beats. Meryl.”

And, naturally, no controversy is complete without a say from Lindsay Lohan.

“Words cannot express how much I LOVE Kristen Wiig,” the actress commented on Wiig’s comedic bit with Will Ferrell, who both presented Lawrence with the award. “And no1 should ever mess with a legend, such as Meryl Streep.”

Despite the negative feedback, the Hunger Games star might be getting the final say in this situation. She’s currently up for two more Best Actress awards this season at the SAG Awards and Oscars for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook.

They say it’s an honor to just be nominated, and they’d be right.

The nominations are in for the 2013 Golden Globes and stars are reacting to all the great news.

Jennifer Lawrence gave a heartfelt thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press for nominating her for her role in Silver Linings Playbook.

The Hunger Games star said: “Wow. I’m so lucky and to be in a category of other talents – Meryl Streep, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Emily Blunt, who have also portrayed independently-minded and driven female characters….that’s very cool. ”

Lawrence’s co-star, Bradley Cooper, was also given a nomination for his portrayal of Pat Solitano in the film.

Leonardo DiCaprio also received a nomination for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for the flick Django Unchained.

DiCaprio responded to this morning’s news by saying: “I’m truly honored to be nominated by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association today.”

“Django Unchained was a remarkable experience and I consider myself lucky to work with Quentin [Tarantino] and the entire cast on the film.”

Silver screen star Hayden Panettiere was nominated for her work in Nashville.

“I’m the epitome of surprised and shocked!” she said of her first Golden Globe nomination.

Her co-star, Connie Britton, was also nominated for her work in the hit ABC series.

Hollywood is mourning the loss of Nora Ephron, the brilliant writer-director who helped bring some of the most memorable romantic comedies to the big screen in her decades-plus career.

Ephron — who died Tuesday evening in New York of acute myeloid leukemia, a blood disease she was diagnosed with six years ago — worked with some of the biggest names in movies after she transitioned from journalism to show business.

Now, many of them are offering their condolences in the hours after her death.

Celebuzz has compiled a gallery of some of most notable responses, including ones from Tom Hanks, who worked with Eprhon on the 1993 romantic comedy Sleepless in Seattle, and Meryl Streep, who earned an Oscar nomination for her portrayal of cooking legend Julia Child in Eprhon’s 2009 hit Julie & Julia.

In Julia & Julia, Eprhon crafted a parallel story between up-and-coming chef Julia Child (Meryl Streep) and a modern-day New Yorker (Amy Adams) who aimed to cook every recipe in Child’s now-famous book, ‘Mastering the Art of French Cooking.’ In the scene below, check out Streep’s uncanny portrayal of Child, which earned the actress her 16th of 17 Oscar nominations.

3.) Karen Silkwood Contaminated

Ephron earned her first of three Oscar nominations for penning the 1983 classic Silkwood, about a chemical technician (Meryl Streep) who investigates her plant’s faulty safety methods after she and her coworkers become contaminated with radiation. The film was based on the true story of Karen Silkwood, who died in a suspicious car accident during her investigation.

2.) “You’re Annie”

An engaged Baltimore journalist (Meg Ryan) finds herself obsessed with a widowed father (Tom Hanks) — and the movie An Affair to Remember – after she hears his tragic story on a syndicated radio show. Their love affair culminates when they accidentally meet each other atop the Empire State Building in Sleepless in Seattle.

In what quickly became one of the most memorable movie scenes of all time, friends Harry (Billy Crystal) and Sally (Meg Ryan) debate whether men can actually tell when a woman is, you know, faking it.

In a statement obtained Tuesday, the family of Ephron confirmed her death, saying:

Nora Ephron passed away June 26, 2012 at 7:40 pm at New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center surrounded by her family. The cause of death was acute myeloid leukemia. She was 71.

Donations can be made in her honor to The Public Theater and The Motion Picture and Television Fund.

Last night, some of Hollywood’s most iconic actresses stepped out to attend the 2012 Women in Film: Crystal and Lucy awards, which honors achievements made by women in the entertainment industry.

As expected, many of the night’s recipients hit big on the red carpet, including Chloe Moretz and Christina Applegate, who each wore dresses by Max Mara.

Who else killed it on the red carpet?

After competing in a neck-and-neck race for the Best Actress Oscar this year, close friends Meryl Streep and Viola Davis proved that women only get better with age, with looks that rivaled Moretz and Applegate for best dressed honors.

Streep wore a gorgeous nude cocktail dress, while Davis opted for a strapless all-black LBD.

But perhaps the biggest scene stealer of the night: Jenna Dewan, better known as Mrs. Channing Tatum, who donned a teal all-in-one ensemble by — who else? — Max Mara.

Two Oscar winners and one steamy photo shoot makes for a great story! 

Penelope Cruz graces Harper’s Bazaar‘s May issue, and the Pirates of the Caribbean held nothing back when it came to talking about her idol Meryl Streep and their nude photo shoot together. 

Several years ago, Penelope, 37, posed in her birthday suit for the AIDS’ RED charity alongside Meryl, 62. “As soon as she got to set, I had to sit topless on top of her,” the Spanish actress recalls. Needless to say, Penelope refers to the shoot as “the most interesting love scene I’ve ever done.”

As mentioned, the Iron Lady actress is a mentor of Penelope’s, the Vicky Cristina Barcelona vixen admitting:

“When I first started watching movies and I saw Meryl’s work, that’s when I became obsessed with acting.”

That’s the understatement of the year. Since breaking into acting, Penelope has starred in various films over the years including Blow, Vanilla Sky, and Volver. Perhaps the biggest change in her life came when she and husband Javier Bardem welcomed their son Leo into the world, and her priorities changed.

“Maybe I’ll make one movie a year, maybe two, but it’s not going to be more than that because I have other priorities now.”

They took the night’s highest honor as Best Actor and Best Actress, but these two couldn’t be more different! Meryl Streep is an award show veteran (with 17 Oscars noms), while Jean Dujardin is the new kid on the block. The winning duo attended Weinsten’s after-party at The Mondrian Hotel in West Hollywood.

“I’m so honored,” Meryl told us, adding that she was “so thrilled. I couldn’t be happier. This is a wonderful night.”

First timer Jean was elated by his win. “l feel very lucky and happy,” he said. 

On Oscars Sunday, Jimmy Kimmel finally aired the long-awaited trailer for his Hollywood spoof, Movie: The Movie, which featured cameos by pretty much every celebrity in Hollywood.

Okay, not every celebrity. But the list was still impressive, and featured everyone from George Clooney as a brilliant, but disabled, scientist, to Charlize Theron as a gun-happy judge to Meryl Streep in, well, a moustache.

Despite being nine-plus minutes, the plot of the trailer was (deliberately) nonsensical, though it all culminated with Precious star Gabourey Sidibe playing the evil “Black Hitler” who was headed to destroy Earth on a giant meteor. But of course.

Billy Crystal revived his movie spoofs while on hosting duties at the Oscars, with the help of Justin Bieber and George Clooney.

The circus also came to town at the Academy Awards, with Cirque du Soleil stealing the show practically with their astounding performance.

This year has been full of celebs portraying real-life people. Up next, Meryl Streep will star as Margaret Thatcher in The Iron Lady, which will look at the life of the former UK Prime Minister and a focus on the price she paid for power.

In recent years, films based off of the lives of exceptional real-people people have proven to be huge successes, both with fans and with critics. Most recently, Michelle Williams starred as Marilyn Monroe in My Week With Marilyn, while Brad Pitt played real-life general manager of the Oakland Athletics, Billy Beane in Moneyball.

One of the earliest award-winning biographical films was Erin Brockovich in 2000, which starred Julia Roberts as the environmental activist. Other award winners include Ali star Will Smith for his portrayal of Muhammad Ali, and Leonardo DiCaprio for his portrayal of aviation pioneer Howard Hughes in The Aviator.

If you’re going to pay tribute to someone as legendary as Meryl Streep, you’re going to have to do something big. Which is exactly what Anne Hathaway did last night at the Kennedy Center Honors, which celebrated Streep’s illustrious and seemingly never-ending career.

Though her skills as an Oscar host were somewhat left to be desired, Anne proved she can still put on a pretty good show with a musical number that explained just how amazing her Devil Wears Prada co-star is. If that wasn’t enough, Anne went so far as to perform a split on stage midway through the number. (If we were honoring Meryl Streep, we’d find a way to do a split, too.)

Anne recently got engaged to her boyfriend of three years, Adam Shulman. She’ll next appear on the big screen as Catwoman in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises, in theaters July 20.

Welcome back to Celebuzz’s Meet & Greet, where we talk with rising actors, musicians and entertainers before they hit it big. Watch out for these future A-listers!

There was never an “ah ha” moment for Cassie Scerbo, because she’s always known acting was her passion — even before she was born! The Make It or Break It star confesses she was quite the ham as a child and was always dancing and singing as she performed for her family.

“I always wanted to perform, I always wanted to make people smile and I always wanted to be able to make a difference in people’s lives,” she tells Celebuzz. “I enjoyed helping people and performing for people. It was something I truly, from the bottom of my heart, always had a desire to do — perform, entertain, and make people happy.”

After constantly begging to become an actress, Cassie attended an acting school where she earned her first Academy Award — well, at least the equivalent to an Academy Award in an eight-year-old’s life!

“I remember I won Best Actress. They had Best Actress at the end of the year and I won it like the third year I was there; I tried so hard every year to win. I would not leave the school until I won it, I was so excited,” says Cassie. 

Once she became an “award-winning actress,” she got an agent and began traveling back and forth to L.A. from New York for casting calls. Believe it or not, it wasn’t always Miley Cyrus who was set to play the double life pop star Hannah Montana. Cassie was a front runner for the part during the pre-production stages.

“I had the original screen test contract for Hannah Montana,” she reveals. “It was between me and a totally different girl, then they brought in different producers and writers. The night before I flew out, they wound up saying that they wanted to try something different and wanted younger and went for a little bit of a different look.”

So she didn’t end up getting the part, but that didn’t stop Cassie. The talented actress has landed several roles in the industry. Celebuzz caught up with her to learn about her newest movie, talk about her celebrity crushes and dish on her guilty pleasure! 

You have a new movie coming out this weekend called Teen Spirit, what’s it all about?
It’s an ABC Family original airing this Sunday. Its basically about this popular, pretentious, snobby girl. Her name is Amber and I play her. She winds up having her life cut short and getting electrocuted right before she goes to grab her crown. In her afterlife [she discovers] that if she wants to get to heaven, she has to turn the least popular girl in school into prom queen in seven days. In doing so, she starts to realize how snobby she was in her human life and starts to make a few changes. It’s a really cool dynamic and it’s going to be really funny. It has cute little morals, it’s something for everybody and it’s honestly really funny. 

What intrigued you about Amber’s character in Teen Spirit?
I always play the mean girl and it’s so fun. Acting is all about stepping out of the box. I don’t want to go to work everyday and play myself, just a boring nice girl. It was so cool that there was a twist and she was dead on top of it. You don’t realize how much physical contact you have with people. I couldn’t touch anybody because I was a ghost … it was actually a bit of a challenge for me.

What were some of the other challenges you had while filming?
When it came to the green screen stuff, there are a lot of specifics and certain marks you have to hit exactly. If you are off your mark by a millimeter you have to do it again. It was a little bit of a challenge, but it was a lot of fun.

Who are some of your idols in the industry, anyone particularly you would love to work with?
Obviously everyone has to say Meryl Streep. She’s brilliant, she’s genius, and I love her to death. I also love Ashley Judd. I think she’s beautiful and a wonderful actress. I’m a fan of Leonardo DiCaprio. He has the actor swag and he is so talented, mysterious, unique and artsy. I would freaking kill to work with him! There are so many I am obviously found of, I love Ben Affleck too. I saw The Town literally seven times in two days.

Would you say he is your celebrity crush?
I have a few. Ben Affleck and Leonardo DiCapro, definitely. Alex Skarsgard, I love to death from True Blood. Michael Pitt, I would die to work with too. I cannot wait for “Boardwalk Empire” to come back – that would be the guys I would say for now.

In Bring It On: In It to Win It you play a cheerleader, and in your series Make It or Break It you’re a gymnast. Are you athletic off screen as well? 
I work out six to seven times a week. Sometimes I have a personal trainer … sometimes I go to a gym. I like to take hikes, I like to do runs, ride my bike, I surf now. If I don’t get my work outs in, I don’t like the way I feel, especially in a leotard. I can’t play the popular, mean girl and not be looking right, so I have to always try to keep myself in shape.

With all that working out you have to splurge at some point. What is your guilty pleasure? 
Pizza! I could literally order a pie and eat the whole thing…I’m obsessed…Papa Johns all day. The garlic sauce, I can’t even handle it. When I’m not in my leotard on set and we aren’t shooting, I definitely order a pie to myself and eat the whole thing!
