Johnny Depp took a time-out from filming The Rum Diary is San Juan, Puerto Rico on Thursday as a downpour soaked everything in sight.

Oh, well; the guy can probably afford to dry himself off with $1,000 bills, so he can’t be too broken up about it.

In The Rum Diary, a film adaptation of journalist Hunter S. Thompson‘s first novel, Depp stars as Thompson’s literary alter-ego Paul Kemp. The cast also includes Dark Knight baddie Aaron Eckhart, Giovanni Ribisi and Amber Heard. The film is expected to hit theaters in 2010.

Depp appeared to be in excellent spirits in Puerto Rico on Tuesday as he filmed The Rum Diary with costar Aaron Eckhart.

Of course, who wouldn’t be in a good mood, tooling around in a tropical climate in a classic Corvette? Plus, the guy makes $55 million a picture. How could be not smile?

A film adaptation of Hunter S. Thompson‘s first novel, The Rum Diary tells the story of young journalists working, sweating and loving in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Depp plays Paul Kemp, who basically served as Thompson’s alter-ego in the book.

Interestingly, this is the second time that Depp has played Thompson in a film—he also filled the role in 1998′s Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas.
