James Franco refuses to let one news cycle go by without letting us know he’s out there. The busy actor/writer/director/soap opera villain is interested in directing and starring in adaptation of James Ellroy’s American Tabloid. “It’s not all put together yet,” Franco told MTV on Tuesday. “It’s still early. You’re getting the scoop.” Tabloid follows a five-year span in the lives of three law enforcement officers, from 1958 to 1963, culminating in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. If Franco can do for this story what Ben Affleck did for Argo, we’re in. [MTV]

Classic Hollywood: The filmmakers behind Journey 2: The Mysterious Island are turning a popular internet meme into a movie.

Journey 2’s Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will produce and potentially star in the film Teddy Bear, which is based on an illustration depicting a sword-wielding teddy bear defending a young girl from a monster. The story is being kept top-secret, but it’s expected to be a franchise-starter. We just hope this leads to an eventual crossover team-up with Ted. [The Hollywood Reporter]

HBO’s Bored to Death is the latest TV series to pull a Lazarus act. After months of rumors, HBO Films has officially announced development on a Bored feature film. Series stars Jason Schwartzman and Zach Galifianakis are expected to reprise their roles in the film, which, like the series, will center on Schwartzman’s amateur sleuth character. [Deadline]

The Dilemma put Ron Howard in Movie Jail, and now he’s looking to author Neil Gaiman to break him out. The Apollo 13 director is in talks to helm a live-action adaptation of Gaiman’s novel, The Graveyard Book, for Disney. The story centers on a young boy who, when his parents are killed, is raised by ghosts in a cemetery. As a teenager, the boy finds himself on the run from his parents’ killer. Howard is expected to tackle Graveyard once he completes post on Rush, his Formula-One racing drama due September 20. [The Hollywood Reporter]

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’s David Fincher is looking at another bestselling novel to adapt. Fincher is reportedly in talks to helm a big-screen version of Gone Girl, based on the book by Gillian Flynn. Girl is a twisted thriller revolving around the disappearance of a woman on her fifth wedding anniversary. The only thing that could make us more excited for this movie is if producer Reese Witherspoon signs on to play the missing wife. [Variety]

Marvel Studios is looking at two unlikely actors for possible roles for the sci-fi heavy Guardians of the Galaxy: Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler. Wait, what? According to a Tuesday post on the website Latino Review, which has quite the track record when it comes to Marvel scoops, the studio is checking the stars’ availability to board the James Gunn-directed movie. Guardians centers on a unique band of space-set heroes, including a talking tree. Word ‘round the campfire is that Carrey and Sandler are most likely in the running to voice the team’s most popular character, the gun-toting Rocket Raccoon. We’ll see how this all pans out when Guardians lands in theaters August 1, 2014. [Latino Review]

Avatar 3D (Fox Home Entertainment)

The One-Liner: Although James Cameron’s blockbuster epic was released in a limited edition set for Panasonic 3D consumers in 2010, the rest of the moviegoing world now gets to see it in the way it was originally conceived.

Picture Perfect?: Absolutely – this is the standard by which virtually all 3D movies should be measured, especially on the small screen.

What Else Is There?: Unfortunately, nothing, but given the 3-Disc version that was released a few years ago, the presentation of the film itself is the main attraction.

How Badly Do I Want It?: If you’re an avid 3D watcher, it’s a must-own.

Final Destination 5 (Warner Home Video)

The One-Liner: After being offered only as a Best Buy exclusive late last year, Steven Quale’s post-The Final Destination installment is offered as a wide release.

Picture Perfect?: Shot in native 3D, the film looked terrific – if not aggressively in your face – in theaters, and the Blu-ray successfully replicates that experience, which means a clear and vivid picture that is understated and effective.

What Else Is There?: An “Alternate Death Scenes” compilation offers little in the way of real differences for the film’s raison d’etre – watching characters bite it in some crazy way – while two short featurettes explore the technical challenges of creating and completing yet another FD sequel.

How Badly Do I Want It?: This was an installment we particularly liked, so we say get it, but it’s definitely worth a rental — if only to see how 3D can be done well.

Madagascar 3: Europe’s Most Wanted (Paramount Home Entertainment)

The One-Liner: Dreamworks revives their animals-on-the-loose series for another installment that finds them traversing Europe in search of some exciting new adventures.

Picture Perfect?: This is a pretty amazing transfer thanks to a spectrum of colors that’s nothing short of sensational — the clarity and brightness are truly amazing.

What Else Is There?: Three Blu-ray exclusives offer picture-in-picture, in-depth extras, trivia, and interactive games, while the standard-def special features dig into the legacy of the series and offer perspective on the actors and filmmakers’ experiences since it was originally launched.

How Badly Do I Want It?: This isn’t a film series we especially like, so it’s up to you. But the presentation and extras make it a worthwhile purchase, for sure.

Moonrise Kingdom (Universal Studios Home Entertainment)

The One-Liner: Wes Anderson’s wonderful coming-of-age story comes home, offering fans an opportunity to luxuriate in the meticulous details he used to bring it to life.

Picture Perfect?: A wonderful transfer brings Anderson and cinematographer Robert Yeoman’s gorgeous magic-hour imagery to life even on the small screen, offering a clarity and detail that should thrill longtime fans of the filmmaker.

What Else Is There?: Three featurettes, originally created when the film was released theatrically, complete the disc’s collection of content.

How Badly Do I Want It?: As it seems likely that Criterion will put out a deluxe edition with all sorts of extras, this is probably a rental, at best.

That’s My Boy (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment)

The One-Liner: Adam Sandler’s unexpectedly unsuccessful comedy comes home with a collection of extras that will hopefully expand the film’s cumulative entertainment value.

Picture Perfect?: For a movie that demands precious little in terms of visual substance, the transfer does a great job of keeping Sandler and company looking good and generally flawless.

What Else Is There?: A gag reel, collection of deleted scenes, and several featurettes examine some of the film’s, uh, intricacies, including when people on the crew yelled “Wazzuuuppp?” for almost seven minutes.

How Badly Do I Want It?: You probably don’t, but if you’re like us and didn’t see it during its theatrical run, the film might be worth a rental just see what all the hubbub (or lack of it, anyway) is about.

Halloween fever started early this year as Adam Sandler’s Hotel Transylvania shot to the top of the box office over the weekend.

Scaring up solid opening-weekend grosses of $34 million, the film more than doubled the returns of its next-highest competition.

That said, Rian Johnson’s Looper , which stars Bruce Willis, Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Emily Blunt, recouped more than two thirds of its reported $30 million budget with a haul of $21.2 million, an impressive showing that gives the filmmaker a commercial cache to match his critical bona fides.

What sort of returns did ‘Pitch Perfect’ produce?

Although Pitch Perfect came in at Number Six with a gross of $5.2 million, Universal’s music-themed movie did well in the context of its $17 million price tag, making it a minor success.

Meanwhile at Number Three, Jake Gyllenhaal’s End of Watch continues to perform solidly, earning $8 million and bringing its two-week tally to more than $26 million.

Trouble with the Curve, starring Clint Eastwood, Justin Timberlake and Amy Adams took home $7.5 million, landing it at Number Four and bringing its cumulative total to $23.7 million after just two weeks.

And Jennifer Lawrence’s House at the End of the Street followed at Number Five, earning another $7.1 million and bringing its theatrical gross to date to $22.2 million.

The British Open has invaded once again, but you don’t have to to be a pro to get into the swing of golf.

Tiger Woods has stiff competition as golfing big shots are not out there on the green, but hitting up movie screens as well.

What could be better than watching a live golfing competition?

If anyone thinks that golfing is boring, think again.

Classic films such as Tin Cup starring Kevin Costner, Caddyshack featuring Rodney Dangerfield and Chevy Chase, and Vince Vaughan‘s breakout flick Swingers all give a new meaning to the sport of golf.

Of course, they may be a little on the faux side, but that’s what makes them so alluring.

Eyeing the handsome men who play golf — as opposed to analyzing each individual putt — may not be so bad but, viewing the stunts performed in golf flicks such as Happy Gilmore create inevitable laughing attacks — even if it’s with a side of eye-rolling.

In Happy Gilmore, Adam Sandler plays a an unsuccessful hockey player who develops his skills in the golf world. He is one of the most unconventional golf players, yet somehow manages to win — big time.

Though his personal life has suffered in the past few weeks, Tom Cruise‘s still laughing his way to the bank.

Forbes magazine recently released its annual list of the world’s highest-earning actors and Cruise, 50, dominated over his competitors with a whopping $75 million — almost twice what the first runner-up had raked in between May 2011 and May 2012.

In compiling this yearly list, Forbes considers factors such as upfront pay, profit participation, residuals, endorsements and advertising work.

The ranking comes shortly after news that Cruise’s third wife, actress Katie Holmes, filed for divorce.

The former couple has already signed a divorce settlement. Their only child — 6-year-old Suri Cruise — will be living with Holmes for the majority of the time while Cruise has agreed on supervised visits.

“The case has been settled and the agreement has been signed. We are thrilled for Katie and her family and are excited to watch as she embarks on the next chapter of her life,” Holmes’s attorney Jonathan Wolfe confirmed the deal on Monday. “We thank Tom’s counsel for their professionalism and diligence that helped bring about this speedy resolution.”

We’re thinking this could get a little awkward at times.

Patrick Schwarzenegger — who’s rumored to be dating country-pop superstar Taylor Swift — is currently filming his big-screen debut, Grown Ups 2.

His co-star?

None other than Taylor Lautner, who famously dated Swift beginning in 2009.

Schwarzenegger and Lautner were spotted filming scenes for the Adam Sandler movie in Massachussets on July 8. The flick, which is a sequel to 2010′s Grown Ups, also stars Salma Hayek, Chris Rock and Andy Samberg.

Rumors of a Schwarzenegger/Swift romance began swirling last week when the two spent the Fourth of July together on the Kennedy family’s famous property in Hyannis Port, Mass. The 22-year-old singer was spotted walking on the beach with Schwarzenegger, 18.

The young man certainly enjoyed his Independence Day with Swift. He later tweeted: “Had such an amazing day. Best 4th of July I could ask for. Hope everyone had a great day!”

Swift and Lautner, meanwhile, dated in 2009 after meeting on the set of Valentine’s Day. Swift reportedly chronicled their relationship — and its demise — in her song, “Back to December.”

Adam Sandler has been making millions of people laugh for nearly two decades, after becoming a writer — then cast member — on Saturday Night Live in 1990.

While Taylor Lautner is mostly known for his butt-kicking roles (literally, he just won a Kids’ Choice Award for it!), it looks like he’s ready to take on the world of comedy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the 20-year-old Twilight star will share the screen with Adam Sandler, David Spade, Maya Rudolph and more in Grown Ups 2, a sequel to the surprise 2010 comedy hit. While not many details are known about the film’s plot, sources tell THR that Tay will have a “fun” role where he’ll go head to head with Sandler.

Adam Sandler isn’t afraid to get in touch with his feminine side!

The comedian is back with his latest film Jack & Jill, and takes on dueling roles playing Jack, a husband and father as well as his own (obnoxious) twin sister, Jill. Set around the holidays, Adam’s character reluctantly invites his sister for a visit, after some encouragement from his wife (Katie Holmes).

A number of LA hotspots are featured in the film (see how many you can spot!), but it’s a Lakers game where Jill catches the eye of a Hollywood legend.

Al Pacino makes a cameo in the film as a sappy version of himself who is after the heart of Jill.

Live from New York, it’s…Jennifer Aniston?

The Just Go with It actress revealed on The Oprah Winfrey Show show on Wednesday that she was once offered a position on Saturday Night Live in the early ’90s when she was a struggling actress. Unfortunately for SNL, Aniston passed up the offer to take a starring role in a little sitcom called Friends.

“We wanted Aniston to be on the show with us,” said Jen’s Just Go with It co-star (and former SNL funnyman) Adam Sandler. “I remember being on the ninth floor where Lorne Michaels‘ office was, and seeing Jen come in. I was like, ‘Oh my God, there’s Aniston. Is she about to be on our show?’”

Aniston, for her part, said that she felt that SNL was “a boys club” and decided to take an offer to star in Friends.

“They were like, ‘You’re so stupid,’” said Jen. “They thought I was making a huge mistake.”

“She said no? She’s gonna do that Friends? What the hell is Friends?” Sandler remembered saying to his SNL friends. If Aniston had taken the role she would have starred alongside Sandler, Chris Farley and David Spade.

Luckily for Jen, her decision to pass up the famous sketch comedy show for a new sitcom paid off. “I did alright,” Jen joked about her decision to go with the NBC sitcom that launched her into superstardom and eventually earned her $1 million per episode.

Even though she turned down the job, there was no bad blood between Jen and SNL– the actress went on to host two episodes of the show in 1999 and 2004.

The Billy Madison actor was bestowed with the honor and made it a family affair bringing along his wife Jackie Sandler and daughters Sadie, 4, and Sunny, 2. In the middle of his speech, his little girls interrupted him and declared, “We love you, dad!” Awww! The 41-year-old celebrates this honor right before the release of his latest film, (which also stars Jennifer Aniston) Just Go With It, on February 11.

Adam Sandler just reached a new high for “thank you” gifts. 

While promoting the Grown Ups DVD and Blu-ray release on The Howard Stern Show, Chris Rock dished, “I went outside the other day and I had a new Maserati in the driveway.” 

Rock soon found out costars David Spade, Kevin James, and Rob Schneider all received the same Italian sports car. 

Grow Ups, under Sandler’s production company, Happy Madison, grossed a total of over $270 million worldwide. 

Rock also told Stern, “The movie’s like the biggest thing for [Sandler], he appreciates the help.”

Sounds like Adam Sandler‘s newest film was a tough gig.

In the comedy, Just Go With It, he plays a man after Brooklyn Decker‘s heart and enlists the help of his friend, played by Jennifer Aniston, to win her over. It’s currently set to be released in February of 2011.

Adam Sandler was feeling oh-so-pretty in half drag on the set of Jack and Jill Monday afternoon in Beverly Hills. 

The Funny People star, who’s already gone full drag for the cameras, is playing both title characters a la Eddie Murphy, which requires a considerable amount of time in heels. His frequent cohort and fellow SNL alum David Spade was also on set having a chuckle at Sandler’s expense.
