The 2012 American Music Awards is finally upon us this Sunday night — but who will turn heads at this year’s ceremony?

Over the show’s 40 years run, plenty of fads have come and gone on the red carpet. From the grunge-inspired look of the ’90s to last season’s plunging necklines, the best, the worst and — um, the questionable — fashion trends have all made their way to American music’s biggest night.

Last year, Ke$ha and Nicki Minaj were certainly going neck-in-neck to see who could make the biggest fashion statement. In one corner, the “Tik Tok” singer rocked a ripped black gown with studded eyebrows, while the “Super Bass” rapper turned heads with a bright pink afro and a full ball gown.

In the best dressed category, Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift proved that age is just a number by slipping into very sophisticated, old Hollywood-inspired ensembles.
