With just two episodes left in The CW show’s season, the couple is in for some bumps in the road.

Much of that has to do with Carrie’s need to over think everything — a blessing and a curse when it comes to her relationship with Sebastian.

“[Carrie] thinks about things in a different way than most girls in high school do,” Butler tells reporters of what attracts Sebastian to Carrie at a recent screening of Monday’s episode.

“She understands things on this deeper level,” he continues. “It’s a more vulnerable place to have that deep connection with a person. But that always ends in some type of pain, because it ends up ripping your heart out rather than some sort of superficial relationship.”

Sebastian definitely serves a distinct purpose in this chapter of young Carrie’s life. Monday’s episode revolves around the launch of Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” tour and is all about first times. Sebastian tells Carrie he loves her, but her first inclination is to blurt out that she wants to have sex with him — meaning, she wants him to be her first. But, that (strangely enough for a high school boy) isn’t what he’s looking for.

“I think Sebastian really wants to be a connected person to somebody and he doesn’t have parents who have given him that, and Carrie feels like a real connection, but it’s been exhausting,” executive producer Amy B. Harris explains.

“It’s not easy to be with someone who wants to talk about their feelings, and Carrie is someone who can’t not say [their feelings] and in a way that’s wonderful for someone like Sebastian. And on the other hand, it could be a long journey with someone like that.”

Of course, as much as we want Carrie and Sebastian to work, we know that she ultimately doesn’t end up with him. So, how does Butler approach the part when he knows this relationship is destined to fail?

“I heard that when Daniel Day Lewis was playing Lincoln, he went to the museum, the Lincoln museum, and didn’t go into the room past when he was assassinated, because he didn’t need to know anything past that,” Butler, 21, explains. “So he wouldn’t look at the pillow that had the blood on it and everything.”

“I kind of feel that way, I have to put the blinders on and put my focus into what is happening right then, and the feeling of love and the feeling of heartbreak and everything that’s happening right now, and not ever focus on what is happening in the future.”

Harris adds, “Personally for me, when my high school boyfriend and I, when I left for college, even though I knew I wasn’t going to marry him, we were 17 years old, but I cried for three-and-a-half hours out of the four hours with my parents, because it was the most devastating thing because I actually understood that my first love was going to disappear and I was going to go on to do different things and we both were. And that for me feels real, and there is so much jeopardy.”

“It doesn’t change that I didn’t know what the future was for me and who was going to be my Mr. Big, but you just feel it all even sometimes more painfully.”

The Carrie Diaries airs Mondays at 8PM on The CW.

How do you feel about Sebastian and Carrie’s love affair? Can you relate?

Harris says that she feels a huge amount of responsibility when it comes to writing gay characters on her television shows. That’s especially true right now as The CW show ramps up its coming out storyline for Walt (played by Brendan Dooling).

“I am Twitter-obsessed and the tweets that mean the most to me are the people who are responding to the Walt story,” Harris tells reporters at a screening on Wednesday. “I do feel a big responsibility to tell it well and as authentically as I can.”

Of course, Harris knows that Walt’s storyline is unfolding as California’s Prop 8, the anti-marriage equality bill, is being debated in the U.S. Supreme court this week. It’s a fight that has managed to join together liberals and conservatives who are beginning to see that this country probably has bigger fish to fry.

“I think that it is fantastic that there is a world now where basically when the Supreme Court makes a certain decision, they will be on the wrong side of the future of what this world will look like,” she predicts if the court actually rules to support Prop 8, which bans gay people from legally marrying and enjoying all the benefits of a government-sanctioned union.

“And I think that is a wonderful thing,” she continues. “It’s like you’re going to be on the wrong side of history if you make this choice.”

But, while the fight for marriage equality has gained more support across the country, Harris tries to remain realistic about just how widespread that acceptance is.

“There are still plenty of places in America where coming out, whether it’s in a religious family or you’re in a small town, where it isn’t easy,” The former Sex and the City writer/producer points out. “So, I hope if [Walt's] storyline resonates for people who are struggling that would be the ultimate for me.”

The Carrie Diaries airs Mondays at 8PM on The CW.

How do you think The Carrie Diaries is handling Walt’s storyline? And where do you land on marriage equality?

But things cooled off before they even really got started, especially for a show set in high school, the time in every young girl’s life that serious questions and concerns start to arise about sex, love, and relationships. Naturally, The Carrie Diaries is not shying away from these things — for any of the characters — and things are about to be propelled forward now that there’s a new guy on Carrie’s horizon.

You may have thought learning Sebastian hooked up with an old teacher was enough to have Carrie stressing about losing her own virginity, but when an old childhood friend, George (Richard Kohnke), resurfaces on Monday’s episode, “Dangerous Territory,” the discussion may just have to be raised sooner, rather than later.

“He’s definitely someone new in Carrie’s life who will be around for a nice little arc. I like triangles, and this time there’s a quadrangle coming with Donna and Sebastian and Carrie having the possibility of George,” The Carrie Diaries creator Amy B. Harris said at a screening in Los Angeles, Calif.

“He’s definitely a more relaxed energy than Sebastian, and I kind of like that about him. To me it was sort of fun to bring him in in a part of Manhattan we hadn’t seen… This was a way of bringing in this sort of Upper East Side socialite world, which was so big in Manhattan in the 80s.”

Though initially when Carrie and George reconnect, it’s done in a very sweet, innocent way (he invites her to one of his mother’s lavish dinner parties), Harris admitted that things move along quickly for George’s arc on the season and not all that differently from Mouse’s (Ellen Wong) own mini-arc of worrying over whether or not she’s any good at sex with her college-aged boyfriend.

“There’s an innocence to this show that I am not seeing on TV on a lot of other shows, but a realism, as well, which is 17- year-olds having sex,” Harris said. “I think that’s the reality of your experiences in high school. You’re still innocent and hoping for the best, and yet you’re also experiencing all of these milestones, and they’re happening in such juxtaposition to your life in your parents’ home.”

“I think with our characters, everyone’s sort of losing it in their own way, and sometimes it can shape who you are. I think Maggie having lost it to [Simon] and not to Walt says a lot about who she is and what she’s chasing. To me, she’s the opposite side of the Samantha coin; if Samantha uses sex as a power point, Maggie is using sex to find love and intimacy in a place where it’s not always [there].”

Harris considered Carrie to be much more of a romantic, though, pointing out that she wants “something special” out of such a serious step in her life and therefore is “struggling with what it means for her.”

“What I love about Carrie is she actually values her virginity and thinks about what that will be and who she wants to give it to. I think George being older and from a more sophisticated world has a different attitude about it. Some people think virginity is something to get out of the way, and some people think it’s a treasured milestone, and I like putting Carrie up against both,” Harris said.

Carrie certainly will not be taking the how and when of the decision to lose her virginity lightly, but getting to explore such stories is part of what Harris hopes makes the show relatable to the young audience today — and audience she believed is “secretly thinking these things or whispering them at tables with my girlfriends about what I hope for or dream for, or how I lost my virginity, or am I doing a good job because I really don’t know anything about the penis yet” — just as Sex and the City spoke to, and up for, a generation of women before it.

The Carrie Diaries airs Mondays at 8PM on The CW.
