Over the years, the Grammy Awards have shifted focus of its annual show.

While there will always be much ado about the handing out of the golden gramophones, much of the Grammys spotlight is now placed on the performances.

Take last year’s telecast for example: the three-and-a-half-hour ceremony featured a whopping 19 performances, while the show dropped the number of award categories to just 78, compared with the more than 100 of years past

And the 55th annual Grammy Awards are gearing up to be no different. Bruno Mars, Rihanna, Kelly Clarkson and Sting were all added to the bill of performers on Monday, joining already-announced Justin Timberlake, The Black Keys, fun., The Lumineers, Mumford & Sons, Frank Ocean, Taylor Swift, Carrie Underwood, Jack White, Elton John, Alicia Keys, Dierks Bentley, Miranda Lambert, Maroon 5 and Ed Sheeran.

But before millions tune into those artists on music’s biggest night this Sunday, Celebuzzis looking back at some of the best acts to grace the Grammys stage.

From the King of Pop to a soul diva duet, relive the top 10 best performances in the award show’s history.

Janet Jackson (1987)
Though she didn’t take home the Album of the Year trophy for Control, Janet Jackson left her mark on the Grammy ceremony with her show-stopping performance. With the help of her Flyte Time crew and some Paula Abdul choreography, the singer stepped out of the shadow of her larger-than-life big brother, Michael Jackson, with this stirring rendition of “What Have You Done For Me Lately.”

Michael Jackson (1988)
Beginning with just a mic and his dancing shoes, the King of Pop wowed with a slowed-down version of “The Way You Make Me Feel,” before slipping into “Man in the Mirror,” with the aid of a full gospel choir accompanying him.

Whitney Houston (1994)
As one of the most successful female singers of all time, Whitney Houston needed no more than her vocal chords to bring down the house at the Grammy Awards with a booming rendition of “I Will Always Love You.” The Bodyguard soundtrack tune went on to snag Album Of The Year, Record Of The Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance at the ceremony. After this goosebumps-giving rendition, it’s easy to see why.

Eminem and Elton John (2001)
As critics slammed his The Marshall Mathers LP lyrics as homophobic, Eminem took the Grammy stage with out-and-proud musician Elton John, a longtime supporter of the rapper, for a duet of “Stan” that left people’s jaws agape.

Christina Aguilera, Pink, Lil Kim, Mya, Patti Labelle (2002)
After remaking the Labelle classic for the 2001 film Moulin Rouge!, Christina Aguilera, Pink, Lil Kim and Mya were joined on stage legendary singer Patti Labelle for an elaborate glitz-and-glam version of the No. 1 cover of the iconic disco song, “Lady Marmalade.”

U2 and Mary J. Blige (2006)
After U2 opened with “Vertigo,” Mary J. Blige stole to center stage, emotionally belting out her high notes on “One” alongside frontman Bono, offering for a moving performance of the remake that received a Grammy nod for Best Pop Collaboration with Vocals.

Kanye West (2005)
Opening with a preacher delivering a sermon from a pulpit, Kanye West strode out onto a stage set up like a church, complete with rows of parishioners. As the rapper spit lines like, “My mama used to say only Jesus can save us,” the churchgoers bounced to the beat in their seats before rising to their feet for the chorus.

Beyonce and Tina Turner (2008)
After more than seven years away from the stage, Tina Turner teamed up with fellow soul diva Beyoncé for a powerful duet of her classic, “Proud Mary.” Introducing the icon to the stage, Bey praised Turner as a “legend” who embodies all “the glamour, the soul, the passion, the strength, the talent” of some of music’s most famed female performers.

Chris Martin and Jay-Z (2009)
Before Jay-Z and Coldplay frontman Chris Martin‘s musical collaborations turn into a full-blown bromance, the rapper joined the pop-rocker on music’s biggest stage for a stripped down version of “Lost.” After Martin began the song solo, plunking at a colorfully-painted piano, Jay-Z emerged from the darkness to drop his rap verse. It proved a moment of magical music fusion.

Alicia Keys and Jamie Foxx, (2005)
As she was riding high on “If I Ain’t Got You” and he was garnering praise for a now Oscar-winning performance in Ray, Alicia Keys and Jamie Foxx joined forces on the Grammys stage to pay tribute to rhythm and blues legend Ray Charles. “For an old friend,” Foxx said, fingering the keys of the piano as he and Keys slid into the harmonies of “Georgia,” back by a full orchestra.

No not THAT ‘F’ word. Celebrities are using their strong arm to give a hand to the anti-poverty advocacy group ONE, with a new PSA titled “The F Word: Famine is the Real Obscenity” making it’s rounds on the net, and showcasing the famine occurring in Somalia. 

The clip, which is a little over a minute long, features such celebs as George Clooney, Jessica Alba, Joe Jonas, Colin Farrell, and U2 frontman and humanitarian Bono, among others, sounding off on the cause.

Clooney lets us know the severity of famine in the video, stating: 

“Thirty thousand children have died in just three months”

Paper Magazine cover boy Joe Jonas is a man of many suits and talents! Celebuzz chatted with the solo JoBro just moments before he took the stage for his Sounds Like Paper concert in NYC on Wednesday, July 6, and he was quite candid about everything from his fashion sense to who he’d like to collaborate musically with to his return to TV acting. We even got him talking about his famous brothers Nick and Kevin Jonas, and the possibility of an onstage reunion in the near future!

On meeting U2 frontman and music icon Bono:
“I went to his concert and I got an invite to his after party. … Me and my buddy are sitting there and he comes up to us and starts talking to us for like three or four hours. I told him I wanted to do a solo project and kind of got a feel about what he thought and he said, ‘Just be really honest with your lyrics and you’ll be really happy with it.  If you really go there and have fun with it, it’ll be fantastic!’ He’s amazing. I look up to him so much as a musician.”

Possible Future Collaborations?
Tiny Tempah is really cool. I think he’s awesome, and Adele, I love her music. I think she’d be great to work with.”

 Will Kevin and Nick Jonas be joining Joe onstage if he starts touring?
“I can see that happening onstage. Once we start touring, if they come to our show, I can see them hopping up onstage.”

Can we expect a migration into fashion from this solo bro?
 I went to a Calvin Klein fashion show (during Milan Fashion Week Menswear) and it was really cool to kind of understand that world of fashion and diving in was really fun. … They (Calvin Klein) wanna do some stuff, I wanna do some stuff with them. … So I’m looking forward to it.”

Fashion Advice to Men?
You just gotta be comfortable with what you wear, [but] just go out of your comfort zone on certain things. … You don’t want to be in super tight fitting clothes all the time, but if it’s a jacket and you say ‘I don’t know,’ try it out. It helps your creativity when you wear clothes.”

Any fashion mistakes?
(Laughs) Oh yeah! I look back in like a year and I go ‘what was I wearing?!’ Yeah, I definitely laugh at myself.

Will Joe reprise in role on Hot in Cleveland?
 ”I didn’t die off the show. So I can come back and that would be good. I would love to! I think that show is awesome.  People on that show are amazing and meeting Betty White was unbelievable so I’d love to do it.”

Are Miley Cyrus and Angelina Jolie the best celebrity role models?

According to an online poll at WENN, the two ladies are the leading female role models. Angelina won the top role model spot with 43 percent of the votes, while Miley came in third with 15 percent.

Actor George Clooney narrowly beat out Miley for the number two spot with 23 percent of the vote. U2 frontman Bono came in fourth with 14 percent of the vote and the Jonas Brothers rounded out the group with 5 percent of the vote.

Angelina nabbed the top spot for her work as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador, which recently brought her to Pakistan where she brought attention to the millions of Pakistani people displaced by the recent floods.

Miley is also very active in charity work. The “Can’t Be Tamed” singer has been active with Youth Service America for years and she recently auctioned off her clothes on eBay to raise money for Get Ur Good On and Blessings in a Backpack, a charity that provides food for underprivileged schoolchildren in America. Bad news for U2 fans: Bono has been forced to undergo emergency back surgery and may have to cancel their US tour.

A rep for the band issued a statement today stating that Bono suffered and injury during the band’s rehearsals for their upcoming tour.

Bono was rushed to a Munich hospital following the injury and underwent surgery. He is expected to spend the next few days in the hospital recovering before returning home for some bed rest.

The band’s rep said that once Bono’s condition has been thoroughly assessed, they will make a statement on how this will impact the upcoming tour.

Wow, first Bret Michaels gets rushed to the hospital earlier today for a hole in his heart and now Bono has a back injury. Today is a terrible day for ’80s rock idols.

Sacha Baron Cohen has pulled in two high-profile conspirators with his prank-happy character, Bruno.

British newspaper the Mirror reports that U2 frontman Bono and Coldplay warbler/Gwyneth Paltrow beau Chris Martin have banded together with Sacha—in his guise as gay Austrian TV personality Bruno—to record a single.

The song, rumored to be titled “Dove of Peace,” mocks the efforts of charitable music foundation Band Aid—which Bono participated in with the 1984 single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”

Martin has also developed a reputation as a musical do-gooder, particularly with his support of fair trade practices.

But that didn’t stop the pair from playing along with Cohen’s spoof. The song, which has already been partially recorded at legendary Abbey Road studios, bears the couplet, “For people of Africa who live in hell/ They will never wear Chanel.”

“Chris Martin was in stitches throughout the recording and only just managed to get his lines out,” says a spy at the session.

Other songsters rumored to be participating in the song include Madonna, Sting, Elton John and the Village People. The track will be included in the upcoming movie Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt.

Interstingly, Bono recently insulted Martin during a BBC radio interview, characterizing the Coldplay singer as a “w@nker.”

Apparently, the power of satire is strong enough to bring anyone together.

While Rachel McAdams is getting cozy in Canada with new love Josh Lucas, her ex-boyfriend Ryan Gosling isn’t exactly hurting for company.

The actor/musician/sometimes DJ had the honor of being in the presence of U2, popping by their record release party at Bardot Hollywood last night.

“Ryan looked gorgeous and comfortable,” an on-looker tells Celebuzz, “he and [his musical collaborator Zach Sheilds] stuck close by one another.”

Meanwhile, Bono and The Edge worked the crowd in celebration of their new LP No Line on The Horizon.

In addition to his musical offerings, Gosling will next be seen in ensemble thriller All Good Things, about a missing persons case that threatens an NYC real estate empire.

Bono and Chris Martin would seem to have a lot in common.

They’re both singers who front bands specializing in anthemic arena rock. And they’ve both been known to lend their names to a cause or two.

But U2‘s normally good-natured frontman displayed no solidarity with the Coldplay warbler during a recent radio spot with BBC Radio One DJ  Jo Whiley, the Daily Mail reports.

After playing a Coldplay track and asking Bon if he thought Martin is as talented as Paul McCartney, the U2 singer shot back with a profane response.

“I think he’s that good a melodist, but he’s a wanker,” Bono opined.

Stunned, Whiley cut Bono’s answer off midway and asked the singer if he’d like to publicly apologize for the statement. To no avail.

“I’m a reformed character, I don’t do that any more,” Bono replied. 

Then he found room in his mouth for his other foot.

“[Martin's] obviously a completely dysfunctional character and a cretin but he happens to be a great melodist and up there with Ray Davies, Noel Gallagher and Paul McCartney,” Bono offered.

At which point Whiley told her audience, “I’m sorry if anyone is listening at the moment who were offended by the words that Bono said. I will apologize on his behalf.”

This is far from the first time that Bono has caused controversy with his words during a live appearance. Most notably, in 2003, while accepting a Golden Globe, the singer caused an uproar by blurting out that the award was “really, really f*cking brilliant” on live TV.

Maybe Bono should save his voice for singing from here on in.

Just two weeks after welcoming twins Knox Leon and Vivienne Marcheline into the world, Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie are about to extend their family by one.

British newspaper the Mirror reports that Brangelina (we can call them that, since we aren’t shelling out big bucks for their kids’ photos—so there) will be adopting U2 singer Bono to be the twins’ godfather.

“They have been friends for years,” says the paper’s source. “Brad is a massive U2 fan and told Bono how much he admired him when they were introduced at a party a few years back. Since then, they’ve become very close, which Brad is thrilled about.”

The paper’s source says that the singer immediately accepted the offer.

The couple, along with their ever-expanding brood, recently spent some R&R at Bono’s waterfront home in Eze, France.

Wow; between their parents’ rampant humanitarianism and their new godfather’s ceaseless cause-mongering, is there any chance that these kids won’t turn out to be activists?

Expect them on a PSA urging relief for the victims of diaper rash sometime in the next few weeks.
