The first season of Carrie Diaries came to a fashionable finale this week. To help ease the withdrawal, we’re taking a look back at all the fab fashion from Season One. While the Sex and the City prequel is set in the ’80s, the show’s costume designer Eric Damon has gone with a decidedly modern spin on the era’s fashion for Carrie (played by AnnaSophia Robb) and her gang (check out what he had to say about Carrie’s wardrobe here), giving us a new source of outfit inspiration to fill the void left behind by SATC and Gossip Girl. Why The Star Of ‘Carrie Diaries’ Is A Lot More Like You Than You Think

Grown-up Carrie Bradshaw may have loved her designer duds on Sex and the City, but young Carrie takes a far more realistic approach to fashion — both on and off camera.

On Carrie Diaries, Carrie sources many of her high school and internship clothes from her mom’s closet, including her signature “Carrie” bag, while off-screen the show’s star AnnaSophia Robb relies on budget-friendly brands like H&M for her staples.

“I love H&M because it’s affordable and that’s where I shop,” Robb said about the Sweedish brand while attending H&M’s “Denim Days” Launch event in New York City over the weekend. “It’s accessible to girls my age and to women in general and it’s fashionable.”

And that’s not just lip-service.

The Carrie Diaries star was decked out in H&M as she greeted fans and customized her own pair of jeans at H&M’s Fifth Avenue store. Looking chic in rolled light-wash jeans ($24.95), a white tank ($34.95) and a sequin cardi ($59.95), we could hardly believe Robb’s off-the-rack ensemble cost less than $125, a fraction of a pair of Bradshaw’s signature Manolos.

We Know What They’ll Be Wearing On ‘Carrie Diaries’ Next Season

The ’80s are back in a big way for Fall 2013.

Extending on the neon trend thst has been going strong for a while now, we’ve seen big shoulders, culottes and even perms make a return to the fall 2013 runways at New York Fashion Week, making us wonder if New York’s fashion designers are as obsessed with Carrie Diaries as we are.

Marc Jacobs sent permed models — including a few that we’re dead ringers for Carrie Diaries‘ star AnnaSophia Robb down the runways — in oversized blazers, turtleneck dresses and culottes (in case you didn’t live through that fashion phase, think a mix between capris and palazzo pants).

The Working Girl-inspired get-ups paired with oversized shades reminded us very much of Melanie Griffith’s memorable role (and something our moms might have worn back in the day).

Kate Spade and Tracy Reese also channeled the ’80s with neon pieces and punk-prep looks that seemed to be designed with a young Carrie Bradshawin mind, especially Kate Spade’s Manhattan-inspired accessories that paid tribute to the aspiring writer’s true love.

Flashback: The Manhattan That Stole Carrie Bradshaw’s Heart

The year was 1984. That’s when Carrie Bradshaw, a doe-eyed Connecticut teen who’d always dreamed of the big city, got her first glimpse of Manhattan.

“I have arrived, to the place so many before me have come to live out their dreams,” Bradshaw mused while crossing Brooklyn Bridge, setting her sights on the famous New York City skyline, during the series premiere of The CW’s The Carrie Diaries, a Sex and the City prequel based on Candace Bushnell‘s young-adult series.

“It was the beginning of my Manhattan love story,” she said.

But the Manhattan that AnnaSophia Robb‘s Bradshaw — a reinvention of the beloved SATC character made famous more than a decade ago by Sarah Jessica Parker — falls for is a world away from the concrete jungle of today.

For better or worse, the city that never sleeps has changed over the last three decades — since that fateful day back in 1984 when one Ms. Carrie Bradshaw first fell for the city she came to call home.

Celebuzz remembers what Manhattan was like back then — and how far it has come since.

Twin Towers
Any New Yorker will tell you: The city’s skyline will never be the same after Sept. 11, 2001. When Bradshaw first came to the Big Apple, the landmark Twin Towers of the World Trade Center stood out in lower Manhattan. But the once-tallest buildings in the world came crashing down on 9/11, after Al-Qaeda-affiliated hijackers flew two jets into each tower, resulting in nearly 3,000 deaths. And though The Carrie Diaries’ first episode took place in the shadow of the WTC, the show creators chose not to include the towers.

Call the Police
When baby Bradshaw first stepped into NYC, she had better be thinking safety first. In the late 1980s, crime rates spiked in the Big Apple, as the crack cocaine epidemic hit the city streets. But since 1990, violent crime has continue to decline. Much of that thanks goes to the New York City Police Department, which cracked down on wrongdoings in a heavy-handed way in the 90s. So by the time Bradshaw was settled into her quaint East 73rd Street brownstone apartment, the Upper East Side was safe and sound.

Meat to Manolos
Not even two decades ago, the Meatpacking district (or the Gansevoort Market, as it’s officially known) was the grittiest industrial corner of the city, home to — as the name would suggest — butchers, meat-cutters and factories full of carcass. But by the 1990s, the once-blood-stained streets of the waterside neighborhood turned trendy as high-end eateries, nightlife hotspots, and haute fashion boutiques opened up shop. Sex and the City actually captures the area in transition when Samantha (Kim Cattral) moved to the area and faced off with a few neighborhood prostitutes.

Melting Pot Multiples
Back when high school-aged Bradshaw was merely dreaming of becoming a Manhattan success, New York City was home to just more than 7 million people. But those bustling Time Square streets, Broadway theaters, Park Avenue boutiques, and West Village restaurants became all the more cramped over the years. By 2010, the Big Apple’s population had crossed the 8 million mark, making it a bit harder for Bradshaw to stand out in the most populous city of the United States.

Smoke Signs
Back in 1984, Bradshaw could have lit up in just about every corner of New York City. But that began to change with the first Smoke Free Air Act in 1988, when smoking was banned in public restrooms and taxis. Cigarette aficionados suffered another blow in 2002, when smoking in indoor spaces — including restaurants and bars — was outlawed. And in 2011, that restriction even reached the outdoors, extending to the city’s parks, public beaches and even some pedestrian plazas like Time Square. So nowadays, Sex and the City’s Bradshaw would have new reason to kick her Marlboro Lights to the curb.

The World of Publishing
On the series premiere of The Carrie Diaries, Bradshaw has a chance encounter with famed international fashion editor Larissa Loughton (Freema Agyeman), who takes the bright-eyed Connecticut teen under her wing within the world of Interview magazine, a glossy founded by the late great Andy Warhol during the golden era of print publications. The glamour of it all quickly sweeps young Bradshaw off her feet: the models, the fact-paced photo shoots and, of course, the fierce fashions. Even two decades later, Sex and the City sees Bradshaw penning a weekly column for fictional newspaper, The New York Star, and freelancing for Vogue, or what she terms “Mecca.” But nowadays, the magazine industry is but a bare-bones skeleton of its previous self, mostly stripped of its big budgets, high circulation and mainstream media prowess.

The Underground
The 1980s New York City subways were, well, sub-par: filthy trains, failing tracks, tons of graffiti, too many outlaws and some of the strangest of passengers in the continental United States. But the transit authority seized those 10 years as a chance to clean up the underground system, successfully kicking off the 1990s with (graffiti-free!) stainless steel subway cars and lower crime rates — though those strange riders may be, for better or worse, here to stay.

The Carrie Diaries airs Mondays at 8PM on The CW.

Midseason TV Preview: Standouts From 21 New Shows in 2013 (VIDEO & PHOTOS)

It’s a new year and that means the networks are rolling the dice on series to fill the time slots vacated by their fall fails and while their hits shoot more episodes.

There are some definite trends in the midseason offerings like suburban housewives who find their world evolving (ABC’s Red Widow, NBC’s Save Me).

And grown children returning to the nest (ABC’s How to Live With Your Parents and Family Tools, FOX’s The Goodwin Games).

How about a return to the 80s (The CW’s Carrie Diaries, FX’s The Americans)?

Or, manly men who are having their beliefs challenged (FOX’s The Following, NBC’s Do No Harm, The CW’s Cult)?

In the above gallery, I’ve compiled a list of 21 new shows premiering during the midseason. And, below I’ve listed some new offerings that pique my interest the most from the batch.

Dramas:

As a Sex and the City fan, I’m really looking forward to The CW’s Carrie Diaries, which follows the development of the future sex columnist as a 16-year-old in 1984.
There’s so much to love about what FX’s The Americans has to offer. Felicity fans get Keri Russell, Brothers & Sisters fans get Matthew Rhys. There’s spy intrigue set in the Cold War era. Can. Not. Wait.
Speaking of historical dramas, I’m definitely curious about History Channel’s first scripted series The Vikings. Not only because I love the blend of history and fantasy (Starz’s Spartacus!), but Elizabeth, The Tudors and Camelot’s Michael Hirst is behind this project.
Grappling for my attention are FOX’s The Following and The CW’s Cult. Both explore extreme fanaticism and star two actors I appreciate: Kevin Bacon (in his TV series premiere) and Matt Davis (formerly of The Vampire Diaries).

Comedies:

NBC has already previewed 1600 Penn for audiences in December, but I promise it doesn’t lose the pilot’s hilarity (and further builds on defining its characters really well) as the season continues. As my TV reporter colleagues have pointed out, Josh Gad is a lot. But, there’s some great stuff coming for the other actors.
The Goodwin Games doesn’t have a premiere date yet, but it’s definitely a competitive entry into the midseason comedy ring. Not only does Ugly Betty star Becki Newton get another chance at a series (I did enjoy Love Bites, judge me), but Scott Foley gets to flex his comic muscles again too (see his stints on Cougar Town and Scrubs).

Reality:

Premiering New Year’s Day Tuesday at 8 PM, TLC follows 90s girl group TLC member Tionne “T-Boz” Watkins as she moves to L.A. to jumpstart her music career again. She was always the most interesting member of TLC for me, so I’m interested to see how her unique gravelly vocals work as a soloist and years later.
Bravo goes deeper into the professional life of Real Housewives of Beverly Hills castmember Lisa Vanderpump with her spinoff Vanderpump Rules, which previews as a backdoor pilot as part of a two-hour RHOBH on Monday at 9 PM. Again, Lisa has been one of the most colorful additions to the franchise for me, so I’m way more interested in seeing her manage the staff than the drama between them. That could change as I get to know the cast, though.
I’m certain Foodies will find something to love about the new reality competition from ABC, The Taste, which combines elements of Top Chef with the winners judged in blind taste tests (a la The Voice’s blind auditions). Its judging panel should be entertaining with Nigella Lawson and Anthony Bourdain on tap.
Speaking of The Voice, executive producer Mark Burnett once again throws some power the contestants’ way with CBS’ The Job, in which contenders vie for their dream gig while also considering offers from other companies. That’s a good twist on The Apprentice formula.
