The New York Times has published incredible new pictures from Spike Jonze‘s upcoming big-screen adaptation of Maurice Sendak‘s classic book Where the Wild Things Are, which hits theaters on October 16.

Says Jonze of the movie, which stars James Gandolfini, Catherine Keener and Mark Ruffalo,

“I wanted it to be as natural feeling as possible. I wanted to shoot the wild things in camera: on location, out in the wild.”

Jonze found his ideal location in the “stark, rough environments” outside of Melbourne, Australia.

People quotes an onlooker at the event who says, “[Jonze] couldn’t seem to keep his hands off her. It was very cute.”
