So when Coldplay took the stage at the Hollywood Bowl on the same night, Chris Martin and the gang did their best to pay tribute to the fallen Brooklynite by covering the group’s 1987 hit, “(You Gotta) Fight For Your right (To Party)”. The result was a haunting rendition of the famed party anthem — with Martin giving a nod to the hip-hop group, singing, “So we’re sending all our love to the Beastie Boys.”

The remaining members of the Beastie Boys also confirmed Yauch’s death on Friday. They released an official statement reading:

It is with great sadness that we confirm that musician, rapper, activist and director Adam “MCA” Yauch, founding member of Beastie Boys and also of the Milarepa Foundation that produced the Tibetan Freedom Concert benefits, and film production and distribution company Oscilloscope Laboratories, passed away in his native New York City this morning after a near-three-year battle with cancer. He was 47 years old.

In an attempt to get Chris to dish about his marriage to Gwyneth, Ellen said:

“You have a great relationship and two precious kids. And we love Gwyneth.”

Trying to hold back laughter Chris joked with Ellen: ”She’s been a great beard for me now, for 10 years.”

Chris, who apperared alongside his fellow Coldplay band-mate, Jonny Buckland, added: 

“I think a lot of people like me and Jonny join bands because we were really not doing so well.”

From her music to her marriage, the Country Strong star gives a in depth look inside her life with her Coldplay hubby Chris Martin.

“Sometimes it’s hard being with someone for a long time,” Paltrow tells the publication. “We go through periods that aren’t all rosy. I always say, life is long and you never know what’s going to happen.” She added to Elle: 

“If, God forbid, we were ever not to be together, I respect him so much as the father of my children. Like, I made such a good choice. He’s such a good dad. You can never be relaxed or smug and think, I’ve got this thing. That’s also part of it — keeping yourself on your toes. I’m not going to take this for granted.”

As for her reasoning on keeping her marriage out of the spotlight: “He makes music for his fans, and he doesn’t want people to conjure a lame famous couple when they’re getting into his music. I get it.”

Gwyneth has been public in talking about how influential good pals Beyonce and Jay-Z have been to her musically, and she says there is a reason why she hasn’t turned to Chris as much for music advice. “[He’s] a musical genius. It’s like living with Picasso, and being like, ‘Should I make a little something-something?’”

Both acts will play separate, full sets before coming together for an unprecedented mash-up performance of rock and rap.

This isn’t the first time Jay-Z and Coldplay singer Chris Martin have taken the stage together. The pair may have hatched this plan last week after Martin made a widely reported guest appearance during Jay’s sold out Yankee Stadium show. The two have been friends for some time.

In an interview with UK’s The Mirror, Jay (born Shawn Carter) explains that although he is friendly with Chris and his wife Gwyneth Paltrow now, back during his hustling days:

That’s a different scenario. He couldn’t walk through [the Marcy projects]. I was a different person then. I wasn’t open to the world and to cultures. I would have been, ‘Yo! Who are you? Give me your money.’ You couldn’t have a guy like Chris walking through Marcy. He’d have to get robbed. At best.

Luckily, things are different now and Jay and his wife Beyonce take joint vacations with Chris and his family. Chris and Gwen were both present at Jay and Bey’s ultra-private wedding in 2008.

Jay even hints that Chris and Gwen’s friendship may have inspired him to start a family of his own. “They are a really cool family with beautiful kids, who happen to be good at the jobs they do,” said Hova. When asked if he would like to have the same thing as Chris, Jay responded, “Kids? Of course.”

This celebrity relationship is nearly at an end, despite desperate attempts to convince the press otherwise. In a recent interview, she blabbed about how good things are and how they keep it fresh. Well done, Mr. Rose. Sure, it would have been even more impressive if you had done your patented snake dance before the smack down, but kudos nonetheless.

But how does Rose’s pap-smacking prowess match up to that of his celebrity brethren? Let’s take a brief look at Great Moments in Pap-Popping History and find out, shall we?

KANYE WEST

The setting: Los Angeles International Airport. On the seventh anniversary of 9/11, West launches an attack on America’s real enemies: Those who would take his picture without his express written permission.

Kanye starts out strong, but letting a member of his posse take the ultimate fall for smashing the pap’s camera strikes us as a punk move, the kind of thing a guy who would pick on teenage girls would do. Oh, wait…

CHRIS MARTIN

As the Coldplay frontman left Mt. Sinai Medical Center in New York last January with his wife Gwyneth Paltrow, he attempted to give one intrusive shutterbug an express trip to the emergency ward.

Remarkably solid—if only because Martin’s general demeanor and tepid musical output suggests that he would crumble to tears and dust at the first sign of provocation. Apply that kind of attitude to the next Coldplay album and we’ll really be impressed.

BRAD GARRETT

Everybody might love Raymond, but Brad Garrett has no particular fondness for the paparazzi. Everybody Loves Raymond second banana Garrett must have had a touch of indigestion as he left West Hollywood eatery Dan Tana’s last November, because he took a swipe at a photog who was trying to capture a picture of his pretty mug like he had just been one-upped by his TV brother for the 1 millionth and last time.

 Given that Garrett is essentially a waxed grizzly bear, we can’t give him any points for bravery.

JUDE LAW

Was the Alfie star blinded by the light on that fateful July 2009 night in London, or merely taking a cheap shot at a member of the photojournalistic community? Law claimed that the incessant flashbulbs left him momentarily sightless. The photographer herself—and Jude’s expression—suggest otherwise.

No matter what your excuse, Jude, hitting women isn’t cool. Especially from behind. Even Chris Brown is wagging his finger right about now.

THE VERDICT

Axl Rose is the new king of pap-smackers—and the reigning king of our hearts.

Chris Martin and company have announced on their Web site that they’re giving away their new live CD, LeftRightLeftRightLeft, to fans at their concerts and online.

The giveaway is intended to be “a recession-busting mark of gratitude to everyone who’s supported them,” the Web site notes.

“Playing live is what we love,” bandleader Martin says. “This album is a thank you to our fans – the people who give us a reason to do it and make it happen.”

The nine-song CD—which includes the tracks “Clocks,” “Viva La Vida” and “Death and All His Friends”—will be available starting on May 15 to fans attending tour dates on their upcoming North American tour, and also from the site Coldplay.com.

The songs were recorded during concerts in various locations over the past year.

British newspaper the Mirror reports that U2 frontman Bono and Coldplay warbler/Gwyneth Paltrow beau Chris Martin have banded together with Sacha—in his guise as gay Austrian TV personality Bruno—to record a single.

The song, rumored to be titled “Dove of Peace,” mocks the efforts of charitable music foundation Band Aid—which Bono participated in with the 1984 single “Do They Know It’s Christmas?”

Martin has also developed a reputation as a musical do-gooder, particularly with his support of fair trade practices.

But that didn’t stop the pair from playing along with Cohen’s spoof. The song, which has already been partially recorded at legendary Abbey Road studios, bears the couplet, “For people of Africa who live in hell/ They will never wear Chanel.”

“Chris Martin was in stitches throughout the recording and only just managed to get his lines out,” says a spy at the session.

Other songsters rumored to be participating in the song include Madonna, Sting, Elton John and the Village People. The track will be included in the upcoming movie Bruno: Delicious Journeys Through America for the Purpose of Making Heterosexual Males Visibly Uncomfortable in the Presence of a Gay Foreigner in a Mesh T-Shirt.

Interstingly, Bono recently insulted Martin during a BBC radio interview, characterizing the Coldplay singer as a “w@nker.”

Apparently, the power of satire is strong enough to bring anyone together.

They’re both singers who front bands specializing in anthemic arena rock. And they’ve both been known to lend their names to a cause or two.

But U2‘s normally good-natured frontman displayed no solidarity with the Coldplay warbler during a recent radio spot with BBC Radio One DJ  Jo Whiley, the Daily Mail reports.

After playing a Coldplay track and asking Bon if he thought Martin is as talented as Paul McCartney, the U2 singer shot back with a profane response.

“I think he’s that good a melodist, but he’s a wanker,” Bono opined.

Stunned, Whiley cut Bono’s answer off midway and asked the singer if he’d like to publicly apologize for the statement. To no avail.

“I’m a reformed character, I don’t do that any more,” Bono replied. 

Then he found room in his mouth for his other foot.

“[Martin's] obviously a completely dysfunctional character and a cretin but he happens to be a great melodist and up there with Ray Davies, Noel Gallagher and Paul McCartney,” Bono offered.

At which point Whiley told her audience, “I’m sorry if anyone is listening at the moment who were offended by the words that Bono said. I will apologize on his behalf.”

This is far from the first time that Bono has caused controversy with his words during a live appearance. Most notably, in 2003, while accepting a Golden Globe, the singer caused an uproar by blurting out that the award was “really, really f*cking brilliant” on live TV.

Maybe Bono should save his voice for singing from here on in.

Fitness queen Paltrow, who has two children with Martin (Apple, 4, and Moses, 2), says that their strict “no red carpet appearances together” policy might lead people to believe they’re not together, but “so be it.”

“It doesn’t behoove us to be a public couple,” the celebrity blogger says in the interview, according to People.

“He certainly doesn’t want to be that. We’ve never ever walked down a red carpet together, we never will. If people think that that means we’re not together, then – ha ha ha! – so be it.”

Martin, 31, has also recently publicly denied that his marriage is in trouble.

Paltrow says that Martin was her rock after the 2002 death of her father, director and writer Bruce Paltrow.

“I’m amazed he stuck with me [at the time her dad died], because I was a wreck. I can’t believe that he did.”

Paltrow will be a presenter at the 51st annual Grammys this weekend, where her husband’s band is nominated seven times, including nods for Song and Record of the Year for their single “Viva La Vida.”

Perhaps they can relax their hands-off on the red carpet policy just this once? It could be a big night for them and it would be nice to have a photo together as a souvenir.

In this week’s edition of her lifestyle newsletter Goop, Paltrow, 36, consults several of her bold-faced sages for advice on how to manage family expectations, maintain your own identity and not overindulge in the eggnog.

Among her network of emotional experts, highlights include:

• New York shrink Dr. Karen Binder-Brynes, says all should bask in the “heart” of a family but keep a pal on speed dial to vent and find humor wherever possible.

Celebuzz’s favorite by far, however, are the soothing words of spiritual guru Deepak Chopra:

“What it comes down to is ‘don’t placate’ and ‘don’t struggle.’ They are both futile tactics. If you can get beyond these two common pitfalls, the closeness and love that you have for your family–and they for you–will have space to blossom.”

The UK’s Daily Mirror got an exclusive backstage interview with the boys of the band. Martin addressed not only a potential marital rift but also speculative discord within Coldplay.

At London’s O2 Arena, Mr. Paltrow sat down and confessed that he and his fellow musicians have called off the tour once or twice.

“We’ve split up on this tour,” Chris says of the band. “Each time we do, we get back together about 20 minutes later—we don’t even have to announce it!”

But what about his marriage to American screen queen Paltrow? There are several outlets dying to announce those two have parted ways.

When musing on how good things have been of late, Martin says, “I’m trying to think when the last bit of bad news was…there hasn’t been anything that bad for a while. I’m supposed to be getting divorced, we’re supposed to be getting sued…but those things aren’t happening.”

Whew.

Speculation had 31-year-old Chris at odds with Gwyneth, 36, because of the pressure their union faced from a newly single 50-year-old Madonna and her influence over the Iron Man star.

Recently, Paltrow’s own mother, actress Blythe Danner, said the couple were doing just fine, and simply don’t prefer the paparazzi.

“They don’t take pictures together if they can avoid it. It’s a strategy. They don’t want the pandemonium,” Danner told Fox News.

Martin’s band Coldplay has been accused in a recently filed lawsuit by virtuoso guitarist Joe Satriani of ripping off his 2004 song “If I Could Fly” for their Grammy-nominated hit single “Viva La Vida.”

Tongues are wagging that Chris and Gwyneth’s marriage is hurting. A recent report in the New York Daily News had Gwyneth following in BFF Madonna’s footsteps by filing for divorce.

Paltrow was recently linked with billionaire Jeff Soffer, 41, and was said to have spent Thanksgiving at his Indian Creek Island mansion in Florida.

“Gwyneth has confided to friends she and Chris are taking a break,” a source said. “Jeff is crazy about her.”

That’s what Jay-Z, 38, is probably thinking at the moment, given new reports that he will serve as special guest for 31-yera-old pal Chris Martin‘s band Coldplay, when they embark on a three-engagement sweep of the United Kingdom next year.

MTV UK reports that Jay, enjoying a quiet married life, will join the Viva La Vida men onstage in September of 2009 at three major venues: London’s Wembley Stadium, Manchester’s Lancashire Country Cricket Club and Glasgow’s Hampden Park.

Jay, real name Shawn Carter, and Martin have long been associated, as have their wives  Beyoncé Knowles, 27, and Gwyneth Paltrow, 36.

Jay-Z and the Brit band most recently collaborated on a track called “Lost,” which they played live in Mexico in 2007.

The rapper is well acquainted by now with the across-the-pond market. He made history in June by becoming the first hip-hop act to open the decidedly crunchy Glastonbury Music Festival.

For last week’s installment of her lifestyle newsletter Goop, Paltrow disclosed the keys to her Thanksgiving kingdom, from cooking for various party sizes, the perfect sweet potato and even the right moment to pause and reflect.

We at Celebuzz have decided to help with a little recapitulation, as there are only 24 hours left before the big day.

At Monday night’s L.A. premiere of Cadillac Records, Beyoncé received perhaps the most positive reaction to an on-screen performance yet. The movie tells the story of pioneering music label Chess Records and pits Mrs. Jay-Z as blues powerhouse Etta James.

Overshadowed by Jennifer Hudson in Bill Condon‘s Dreamgirls and not fully connecting in comedic turns like Austin Powers in Goldmember and The Pink Panther, 27-year-old Beyoncé may finally have pulled some legitimate cred as an actress.

After the screening at Hollywood’s Egyptian Theater, the likes of Etta, Adrian Brody, Gabrielle Union, Sanaa Latham and Survivor: Gabon‘s Corinne Kaplan headed to Les Deux for the official Grey Goose after party, where Celebuzz couldn’t find anyone not raving about B’s work.

What’s more refreshing? What a true Southern belle Bey is at heart, walking the venue with mom Tina Knowles in tow, thanking partygoers, producers and cast for their hard work.

“I’ll see you in New York,” Beyoncé cooed to Union, regarding their second leg of promotion.

Tina congratulated Union on her turn in the pic, making a bowing gesture to the Bring It On star.

Funny enough—folks might just do the same for Beyoncé after this film hits.

“I’m 31 now and I don’t think that bands should keep going past 33,” the singer told the UK’s Daily Express. “So, we’re trying to pack in as much as possible. Up until the end of next year, we’ll just go for it in every sense.”

While Martin busies himself getting all the collective creativity out before the band hits their age goal, his wife Gwyneth Paltrow, 36, is sliding the opposite route and taking time for R&R between acting gigs.

The New York Post‘s Page Six wagged a collective tongue over Paltrow’s recent trip to Miami. While in Florida, she met pal Madonna‘s rumored beau Alex Rodrigeuz and spent time with hotel mogul Jeff Soffer (a friend, Paltrow’s reps said) and Kate Hudson.

Even a Goop-centric gal like Gwyneth needs a little luxury while her husband is on the road. Besides. it’s not all solo jet setting and club jaunts. Just last night Paltrow caught her hubby’s performance in Dallas, Texas.
