In just a few short days, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will hold its annual Oscar ceremony, crowning the best and brightest Hollywood has to offer with gorgeous gold statuettes commemorating their greatest achievements – this year, anyway.

If you’re at all interested in industry politics, then you’ve no doubt been paying close attention to the jockeying for position that the year’s highest-profile films have done in recent weeks: after Ben Affleck failed to score a nomination for Best Director, his film Argo picked up steam as a film to beat in several major categories, including Best Picture. Meanwhile, director David O. Russell has shopped around the stars of Silver Linings Playbook in an effort to drum up support for the film, which now unexpectedly seems to have a real shot at stealing top honors from the likes of Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty.

But with a few days left to fill out your Oscar ballots for those office pools, we asked Celebuzz’ staff who they think should take home some of the ceremony’s top prizes.

Asked to submit their picks for the top five categories – Best Picture, Actor, Actress, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress – Celebuzz’ top experts offered their thoughts about who will, and also who should win.

Gabi Chung, Staff Editor

Best Picture: Argo. It’s this year’s industry darling.
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis. For someone who’s highly selective of his roles, this man’s track record is amazing. Out of the 20 feature films he’s starred in, he’s been nominated five times for a Best Actor Oscar and won the actual award twice. It’s his year again. The numbers don’t lie.
Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence. Her SAG Award for Female Actor in a Leading Role kind of sealed her fate for this category.
Best Director: Steven Spielberg. Since Ben Affleck — the winner of this year’s Director’s Guild Award for Argo — isn’t nominated for an Oscar, many in the Academy will go for the safe choice and give it to Spielberg.
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway. I’m going with the SAG win argument again.
Best Supporting Actor: Tommy Lee Jones. Again, SAG Awards is always a good prediction of how the Oscar acting awards will be handed out.

Tom Freestone, Producer, The Daily Buzz

Best Picture: Argo
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis
Best Actress: Jessica Chastain
Best Director: Steven Spielberg
Best Supporting Actress: Sally Field
Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz

Jarret Garcia, Photo Editor

Best Picture: Argo
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis
Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence
Best Director: Steven Spielberg
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway
Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz

Kristin Koch, Senior Fashion & Beauty Editor

Best Picture: Argo
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis
Best Actress: Jessica Chastain
Best Director: Ang Lee
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway
Best Supporting Actor: Robert De Niro

Eli Lippman, Celebuzz Social Producer

Best Picture: Silver Linings Playbook
Best Actor: Denzel Washington
Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence
Best Director: Ang Lee
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway
Best Supporting Actor: Tommy Lee Jones

Cory Lopez, Staff Editor

Best Picture: Argo. From sweeping up several other Best Picture wins this season to all the public outcry of Ben Affleck being snubbed for Best Director, Argo has an edge despite the many beloved folders in this more-crowded-than-ever category.
Best Director: Benh Zeitlin. In his feature directorial debut, Beasts of the Southern Wild, Benh Zeitlin directed a five-year-old no-name to become one of the youngest Best Actress nominees ever.
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis. Forever after this acclaimed performance, Daniel Day-Lewis will live on in our minds as the actualization of Abraham Lincoln.
Best Actress: Jessica Chastain. After Kathryn Bigelow was overlooked for Best Director for helming the year’s most controversial film, it seems only fitting its female lead take the top honor instead.
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway. Though Les Misérables garnered mix reviews, the Academy is always a sucker for a dramatic transformation and, of course, a good cry.
Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz. For the second straight Quentin Tarantino film, “supporting actor” Christoph Waltz has shone as the true star.

Cliff Renfrew, Senior Reporter

Best Picture: Lincoln. The scale, storytelling, direction and acting make this my overall favorite pick for best film.
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis. The British actor is simply the best in the business.
Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence. Jennifer Lawrence is the most exciting and talented young actress in Hollywood and gets my vote this year.
Best Director: Steven Spielberg. No other director deserves it more that Spielberg for making such an interesting movie about such an important historical figure.
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway. Simply the best – she can sing and act, and even looks good with dodgy teeth.
Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz. Nobody does danger with a hint of irony better than this German master – worthy of an Oscar.

Matt Russoniello, Community Manager

Best Picture: Either Silver Linings Playbook or Lincoln. Historically, Lincoln is exactly the kind of film that the Academy likes to reward. But Silver Linings Playbook has garnered so much positive attention and goodwill that it definitely stands a chance.
Best Actor: Daniel Day Lewis. He underwent a big transformation for the role, and the consensus is that he deserves a record-breaking third Oscar.
Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence. People like her not only as an actress, but as a personality. People want to see her take the stage and give a memorable acceptance speech.
Best Director: David O. Russell. He pulled amazing, nomination-worthy performances out of his four main actors. That’s a director’s job; he deserves it.
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway. It just seems unavoidable at this point. It was kind of her year.
Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz. He gave the quirkiest, most memorable performance of the bunch.

Andy Scott, Staff Editor

Best Picture: Argo. Ben Affleck’s directing snub should have sealed Argo‘s fate in this category. Ironically, it appears that everyone has decided to rally behind him, instead. Sorry, Lincoln.
Best Director: Steven Spielberg. With Ben Affleck out of the equation, Spielberg seems like the next logical choice to win here. Though wouldn’t it be kind of awesome if Behn Zeitlin won instead?
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis. Why are you even reading this sentence? He’s winning.
Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence. Years from now, people will look back on this category and ask, “Why did Jennfier Lawrence win?” In the meantime, everyone seems to think she deserves it, so there’s no reason to think that she won’t.
Best Supporting Actor: Tommy Lee Jones. Although, your guess is as good as mine. (Go Hoffman, even if you’re actually Lead!)
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway. Hathaway won the Oscar the second she was cast as Fantine. A “Dream” role, indeed.

Andrea Simpson, Senior News Editor

Best Picture: Zero Dark Thirty. Kathryn Bigelow knows how to move an audience with deeply compelling writing and acting, and like The Hurt Locker, told this story of such a poignant moment in the world’s history with such honesty you couldn’t take your eyes off the screen.
Best Actor: It’s a toss-up between Daniel Day-Lewis and Joaquin Phoenix, but in either case, one word sufficiently describes both actors’ performances: Brilliant.
Best Actress: Jessica Chastain. Her subtle determination made this performance.
Best Director: Steven Spielberg. He’s the clear favorite and if he wins, much like the film, he too will go down in American history as only the fourth director to win more than two directing Oscars.
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway. I just hope the Academy spells her name right!
Best Supporting Actor: Alan Arkin. I loved this film, but he made the whole movie worth watching, just waiting for those unexpected one-liners.

Peggy Truong, Contributing Editor

Best Picture: Argo. This will be Ben Affleck’s closest thing to winning Best Director.
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis. He’s been unstoppable all awards season long.
Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence. Although there’s a lot of history riding on this with Riva and Wallis, JLaw’s performance trumps all the others.
Best Director: David O. Russell. Although my personal pick would be underdog Benh Zeitlin, David O. Russell will win the Oscar.
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway. All hail Anne Hathaway and whatever speech she will make to make us all cry.
Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz. This is a weak group of nominees to begin with, but Christoph Waltz’s performance is the strongest of them all.

…And Todd Gilchrist, Senior Film Editor

Best Picture: Argo. Silver Linings Playbook has a real chance at taking this prize given its visibility over the last several weeks, but given the attention heaped upon Affleck specifically because he wasn’t nominated, it seems likely that the Academy will reward his effort in some way, this being probably the best and most direct.
Best Actor: Daniel Day-Lewis. Although my sentimental choice has Joaquin Phoenix winning the statutette for what I still believe is truly the best performance of the year, Day-Lewis’ pedigree, and quite frankly, his charm in the face of so many previous victories, makes him the front-runner. And yeah, it was also a phenomenal performance.
Best Actress: Jennifer Lawrence. Poised to become the next A-list star with acting chops to match, Lawrence retains a scrappy, don’t-give-a-shit attitude that makes her youthfulness sexy without sounding impudent or disrespectful. Jessica Chastain absolutely knocks it out of the park in Zero Dark Thirty, but I feel like the Academy is going to reward her upstart colleague instead.
Best Director: David O. Russell. Spielberg already has his Oscar, and Russell’s film has built a head of steam on the charm and talent of its actors, whom the extraordinarily gifted filmmaker coached to some remarkable performances.
Best Supporting Actress: Anne Hathaway. The moment she finished that uninterrupted tae where she sings her heart out, looking rumpled and broken and beautiful, the Academy already decided – even if they hadn’t seen the end result yet.
Best Supporting Actor: Tommy Lee Jones is such a joyless S.O.B. that his performance in Lincoln seems more like typecasting than a terrific transformation, but it’s the kind of turn that the Academy likes – gruff and abrasive while retaining a charming edge, especially given the principle with which his character undertakes his formidable challenges in Lincoln.

In his opening monologue, Waltz addressed a common misconception about Austrians and Germans.

“I’ve wanted to host for a long time but they always said to me, why you? You don’t have a sense of humor. You’re a serious German actor. First of all, I’m not German. I’m Austrian. And Austrians have a wonderful sense of humor. Germans not so much,” he said.

“I found out I’m the first German speaking host in the history of the show. So naturally I was prepared to do some intelligent and humorous observations about where I come from . . . but people’s ideas of Austria are so cliché.”

Enter SNL regulars Kate McKinnon and Bobby Moynihan in typical Austrian costume and accent, followed by Taran Killam’s version of “casual Hitler.”

After dismissing the clichés, Waltz proceeded to show off his singing chops in a song that roughly translated to “Smile, Damn You Smile.”

The 56-year-old actor took part in two pre-recorded sketches, one in which he played a pope looking into retirement options.

“You’ve worked hard your entire life, you’ve tried to make sound decisions. What will you do when you retire? What will you do after you’re pope?” Jason Sudeikis says in a voiceover for a “Papal Securities” commercial.

The big-budget adaptation of Broadway’s favorite child, Les Miserables, is pitting its cannons and bayonets against Quentin Tarantino’s spaghetti-western six-shooter, Django Unchained.

Which film will sing a victorious ballad and which will lay buried in a shallow desert grave?

Directed by Tom Hooper, the filmmaker behind The King’s Speech, the latest theatrical rendition of Les Mis combines a star-studded cast with high-cost Hollywood production value. The end result is a wonderfully performed rendition of the classic story with critically acclaimed turns by Anne Hathaway and Hugh Jackman.

Hooper’s direction, however, makes the film feel a bit like a well-funded stageplay with the camera filming from the point-of-view of the audience. With a series of close-ups and wide, sweeping shots, the production never truly figures out a way to present these songs in a uniquely cinematic fashion. The film looks and sounds spectacular without necessarily taking full advantage of its medium.

Quentin Tarantino, on the other hand, makes full use of his cinematic toolbox to bring the story of a former slave and a German bounty-hunter to life in Django Unchained. Starring Jamie Foxx, Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio, Django tells a tale of pre-Civil War revenge in purely Tarantino fashion. It’s likely one of his finest – and certainly funniest – films that strikes a smart balance between the near-comic absurdity and inhuman brutality of American slavery.

In Django Unchained, Tarantino tackles no less than America’s history of slavery with his first “Southern,” which one of the film’s co-stars, Sammi Rotibi, says addresses it in a remarkable, unique way.

“When I read the script, it was funny,” Rotibi told Celebuzz. “Honestly, I’ve never read a script where they used so many n-words, but it was written in a really tasteful way, a funny way.”

Although the film is set in the antebellum South, and focuses on a slave (Jamie Foxx) who is offered his freedom in exchange for helping a bounty hunter (Christoph Waltz) track down three fugitive siblings, Rotibi said that it has a decidedly sweeter focus than its premise suggests.

“It’s really a love story between Django and Broomhilda, it just so happens to be back in the slave trade,” he said.

“Obviously I feel offended at certain things that happened back then,” he said when asked if he had any concerns about playing a slave, even in a film written and directed by Tarantino. “But I really enjoyed the script and I just felt fortunate to be a part of this. I think it kind of also reminds you of what happened, but it does it in a light way.”

Django Unchained opens nationwide December 25. Watch the film’s theatrical trailer below.

Equal parts bloody and brilliant, Tarantino’s tenth film follows the titular slave (Jamie Foxx) as he teams up with dentist-cum-bounty hunter Christoph Waltz on a journey to free Django’s wife from villainous plantation owner, Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio). Tarantino veteran Samuel L. Jackson leads an ecclectic supporting cast that includes Don Johnson, Jonah Hill and Justified’s Walton Goggins.

Tarantino’s brand of violence and quotable dialogue, coupled with a scary good performance from DiCaprio, have the critics saying that Django is one of the year’s best. But is it Tarantino’s masterpiece?

Devin Faraci, BadassDigest

“Fist-pumpingly exciting and blood-boilingly provocative, Django Unchained is very much a spiritual sequel to Inglorious Basterds. If there’s a single complaint to lodge against the film it’s that at nearly three hours Django Unchained is too short… How many three hour long movies feel like not enough? Only the very best ones.”

Todd McCarthy, The Hollywood Reporter

“The film’s greatest problem is that, especially in the second half, the Django character gets a bit lost in the shuffle… Foxx doesn’t project the sort of charisma that the lucky few have to rivet audience attention even when they’re doing nothing, so when he’s not the center of attention, he seems withdrawn and not that interesting.”

James Rocci, BoxOffice.com

“Django Unchained is a sharp shock of a film in an Awards season very full of movies so noble they become immobile. It’s wildly unlikely to get much love from the Academy, and that’s fine – bluntly, it’s too good for them. Django isn’t just a movie only America could make – it’s also a movie only America needs to.”

Alison Willmore, Movieline

“There’s a good movie inside Django Unchained, maybe even a great one, but it hasn’t been carved out of the lopsided excess. There’s no pressure on or expectation for Tarantino to please anyone other than himself…”

Eric Kohn, IndieWire

“Accept Django Unchained on its own gonzo terms and it’s a marvelously enjoyable piece of subversive entertainment — for a little while… This one overstays its welcome, but not before the filmmaker reminds us why we love him.”

Django is a plum role which Foxx is hoping will return him to Oscar glory after winning a statuette for Ray back in 2004. It’s also a role Foxx nearly lost to Will Smith.

“I didn’t find out about it until it was actually on the internet and it said, ‘Will Smith to be slated to do Django‘,” Foxx told journalists.

When Smith dropped out due to scheduling conflicts, the role went to Foxx — who promptly called the Men In Black actor, thanking him for the opportunity.

Foxx credits Smith for giving him a break in the industry back in 2001, when Smith pushed director Michael Mann to hire Foxx for the role of Muhammad Ali’s trainer, Bundini Brown, in Ali.

“He told Michael Mann, ‘I’ve got to have that guy,” Foxx recalled. “Michael Mann was like, ‘I don’t know who that guy is.’ So this is another way of him giving me an opportunity.”

In Django Unchained, Foxx’s Django partners with bounty hunter King Schultz (Christoph Waltz). Their journey leads them to Candyland, a sprawling plantation owned by Calvin Candie, (Leonardo DiCaprio) whose favorite past time is pitting one slave against another in bloody fights to the death.

In his first meeting with Tarantino, Foxx talked about his upbringing in racially charged Terrell, Texas. “Me playing the piano, all the Christmas parties in the big white neighborhood,” Foxx reminisced. “And I was furniture, meaning that the people there were doing jokes about blacks.”

Foxx had high praise for costars Christoph Waltz and Leonardo DiCaprio, who wowed his sister when she visited the set.

“Here’s the good looking guy that sometimes you see in the tabloids,” said Foxx. “But this guy comes to work, he knows everything – and even when he is off camera, still giving the performance.”

While most movies about slavery involve a white guy rescuing African-Americans, there’s often a moment where a slave is poised to exact bloody revenge but instead surrenders to his better nature.

“I should kill you but I won’t, and God wouldn’t like that,” is how Foxx explained the usual scenario. “This one is like, ‘I’m going to kill you in front of everybody.”

Can such an iconoclastic take on this dark chapter of American history garner Foxx his second Oscar? If so, he would be the first African-American to be twice honored for Best Actor.

“Well someone has to open that door,” smiled Foxx. “I call it ‘eating pizza.’ When you eat a pizza, do you say, ‘Wow, this is from Italy?’ Or do you just eat the pizza? So I wanted it to be where you were just eating a pizza, where if a black person is nominated, or an Hispanic person is nominated, or whatever it is, it’s just eating pizza. And hopefully someone doesn’t make something out of the pizza. If we could get to that, we are good.”

But a few notable items managed to get our attention.

Read on for updates on Star Wars: Episode VII, a film adaptation of Stephen King‘s Cell and The Muppets sequel.

1. Luke Skywalker Knew About Episode VII Before We Did

Actor Mark Hamill met with George Lucas over the summer to discuss early plans for a new Star Wars trilogy, Hamill told Entertainment Weekly on Wednesday.

Hamill, who played Luke Skywalker in the original trilogy, told the magazine that he had lunch with Lucas and Princess Leia herself, Carrie Fisher, where Lucas broke the news.

As to whether or not Hamill has any insight as to the plot of the upcoming films, the actor is as in the dark as we are. ”[Lucas] was just talking about writers and the fact that he wouldn’t be directing,” Hamill revealed to EW. “I guess he wanted us to know before everybody else knew. He said, ‘Now you can’t tell anybody!’ [laughs] Even now I’m nervous about saying anything. I just don’t know!”

2. Christoph Waltz In Talks For The Muppets Sequel

Christoph Waltz, best known for his Oscar-winning performance in Quentin Tarantino’s Inglorious Basterds, is in talks to star in the sequel to 2010′s The Muppets.

Waltz will play an Interpol inspector in the Europe-set sequel, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed Wednesday. THR also reported that The Muppets director James Bobin will also return to helm the sequel.

3. Imogen Poots Feels Need For Speed

Fright Night actress Imogen Poots has landed the female lead in Dreamworks’ Need For Speed, The Hollywood Reporter announced Wednesday.

Poots will star opposite Breaking Bad‘s Aaron Paul in the adaptation of the popular video game series. Speed will be directed by Act of Valor helmer Scott Waugh.

4. Zero Dark Thirty Release Date Pushed

Sony has bumped the release date of Zero Dark Thirty, Kathryn Bigelow’s much-anticipated thriller about the hunt for Osama Bin Laden.

The film will now open wide on Janurary 11, Entertainment Weekly reported on Wednesday. Thirty will open in New York and Los Angeles on December 19, as part of an Oscar-qualifying run.

5. John Cusack to Headline Stephen King’s Cell

The next big-screen adaptation of a Stephen King novel just scored its leading man.

ScreenDaily.com reported Wednesday that John Cusack will star in Cell, which centers on a cell phone call that turns average citizens into very violent, blood-thirsty people.

King will co-write the screenplay with Last House on the Left screenwriter Adam Alleca. The film is currently searching for directors.

Do you want to see Mark Hamill turn up in the new Star Wars movies? Excited for Waltz joining the Muppets? Sound off in the comments below! Also, before you see Waltz with the Muppets, check him out in the trailer for Django Unchained below.

Unlike the first trailer, released in June, with its deliberately anachronistic’70s-funk soundtrack that made the movie look like a typical Tarantino guns-and-guts joint that happened to be set in the 19th century, the new trailer is backed by mournful horns and distorted guitars that make the footage look more like the spaghetti Western Tarantino’s been promising, something along the lines of a Sergio Leone epic like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.

The new trailer also offers some new surprises that help flesh out the plot.

From the first trailer, we knew that Django (Jamie Foxx) is a slave acquired by bounty hunter King Schultz (Basterds Oscar-winner Christoph Waltz), who offers Django his freedom in return for his help in hunting down the elusive Brittle brothers. Along the way, the pair determine that Django’s long-missing wife Broomhilda (Kerry Washington) now belongs to sadistic plantation owner Calvin Candie (Leonardo DiCaprio), and that freeing her from his clutches will be their most dangerous mission.

In the new clip, we learn more about the wicked Candie, including the fact that he stages gladiatorial fights between his slaves. We learn that his house slave Stephen (Tarantino regular Samuel L. Jackson) is quick to suspect newcomers Django and King. And, in a bit of comic relief, we meet Jonah Hill as a member of a proto-Ku Klux Klan posse who has forgotten his hood and wonders if anyone else brought an extra one.

Most of the rest of the trailer is gunfire, explosions, and bloodletting, but staged with the kinetic excitement and inventiveness that Tarantino fans have come to expect. Through it all, Foxx stays unnervingly quiet, as if he’s busy mentally adding up the likely psychic and emotional toll of unleashing his justifiable fury.

What do you think? Does the clip make you excited to see Django Unchained when it opens on Dec. 25? Let us know below.

While Twilight fans have been gushing Thursday over Entertainment Weekly‘s Breaking Dawn issue, Rob continues to work overseas promoting Water For Elephants.

The heartthrob is currently in Paris for the Elephants premiere with Reese Witherspoon and Christoph Waltz, and R.Pattz made sure to make time for the hundreds of fans waiting outside Le Grand Rex Theater.

Happily signing autographs and posing for pictures, a smiling Rob looked dashing in an all black suit. Reese Witherspoon doesn’t look too bad herself, glowing in red!

While Rob is busy working overseas, Kristen Stewart has been in Los Angeles where we assume she’s looking after Bear, her and Rob’s adopted dog!

Next up for Pattinson is the WFE London premiere May 3. Here’s hoping Stewart feels like making a trip across the pond. She is very close with his family after all, Celebuzz says get your passport out and take a vacation!

In the film, out April 22, Pattinson plays a character named “Jacob” and any Twilight fan understands the irony of that situation!

“It is quite funny,” Pattinson joked to Ryan Seacrest of his characters name. “As soon as I read it that was one of my main concerns!”

Guess there may have to be an exception to the Team Edward vs. Team Jacob rule. If you are truly a Rob fan you can be both!

Seriously though, only R.Pattz could make dirty look this sexy, right? No wonder Reese falls for him over Christoph Waltz in their new movie! Check out all the WFE sneak peeks right here.
