It was the bombshell divorce that rocked Hollywood to its core.

And nobody was more surprised than A-lister Tom Cruise when his ex-wife Katie Holmes decided to call it quits on their five-year marriage.

In a rare interview with German TV network PRO 7, the actor opens up about the headline-making split and how he has moved on.

“I hadn’t expected it,” he told PRO 7 while promoting his new sci-fi film Oblivion in Vienna.

Former Dawson’s Creek star Holmes, 34, filed for divorce from Cruise on June 28, 2012, just five days before the star’s 50th birthday, giving him plenty to ponder about as he hit the milestone.

“Life is a challenge. You are 50 and you think you have everything in order and suddenly it hits you, that’s what life is all about,” Cruise said.

The revealing interview, which was published in Germany’s Bunte Magazine, is just a glimpse inside how the superstar truly coped when the shocking news hit the press.

Cruise and Holmes married in a romantic wedding ceremony at 15th Century Odescalchi Castle in Italy on November 18, 2006, and their daughter Suri Cruise was born in April of that same year.

But their fairytale romance came to an end when Holmes filed for a divorce amid rumors that she was at odds with her husband’s Scientology beliefs.

The couple inked their divorced papers on July 9, 2012 with Cruise reportedly paying $400,000 a year in child support while getting liberal visitation rights to see his daughter.

This was Holmes’s first marriage and the third for Cruise, who was previously married to Mimi Rogers and Nicole Kidman, with whom he has two children, Isabella, 20, and Connor, 18.

Now nine months later, the Mission Impossible star — who is reportedly worth $250 million — reveals that humor and throwing himself into filming Oblivion in Iceland helped him get over the heartbreak.

“Life is like a tragic comedy, you need a sense of humor,” said Cruise, who is known to do all his own action stunts.

“I have done white water rafting, I dipped, with the snowmobile on the glaciers, drove around and climbed mountains.”

And despite the intense media speculation surrounding both his private and personal life, Cruise is determined to keep his feet on the ground, while maintaining a good family life and accessibility to his fans.

“Suri, Connor and Isabella have grown up on movie sets — the door is always open for them.

“I don’t have a sheltered life, I want to be in touch with people,” he added.

Cruise’s latest $120 million sci-fi blockbuster, which also stars Olga Kurylenko and Morgan Freeman, opens across America on April 19.

The presents underneath the Christmas tree are bound to be lavish and aplenty for Suri Cruise, but there’s one gift that Santa Claus won’t be bringing the famous tot this year — a larger-than-life Victorian playhouse, Celebuzz has learned.

While numerous reports claim her Broadway star mom Katie Holmes, 33, had purchased a Grand Victorian Luxury Playhouse — with an equally impressive price tag of $24,000 – Stacy Evrard, owner of Sweet Retreat Kids, told Celebuzz that’s simply not the case this holiday season.

“We have not sold this playhouse to Katie Holmes,” she said.

The mini mansion for Holmes’ mini me would have been perfect for the pampered 6-year-old, coming complete with running water and electricity, recessed lighting, play lofts, sunrooms, media rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, cathedral ceilings, and even intercoms connected to the main home.

Although the famous mommy-daughter duo are not Evrard’s customers, one gift Suri can expect from St. Nick is some quality family time with her dad and siblings. As Celebuzz previously reported, the six-year-old will be spending the holidays with her father Tom Cruise, 50, and half siblings Bella Cruise, 20, and Connor Cruise, 17.

The superstar actor’s youngest daughter has obviously been a good littl girl this year, as Cruise revealed at the London premiere of his latest flick Jack Reacher that he’s “got lots of very special things planned (for the holidays)” with his loved ones.

“We are all going to be together — I am looking forward to it,” he said.

Tom Cruise‘s son Connor has recently decided to do both and updated his image by sporting a new mohawk with designs shaved onto the side of his head.

The 17-year-old took to Twitter on July 20 to show off his edgier style.

The fancy mohawk — stenciled with a funky design and all — certainly fits his image as a Hollywood D.J.

Connor, who goes by DJ C-Squared behind the decks, was also spotted at this year’s Comic-Con after visiting his father on the set of his new film, Oblivion.

Celebs came out in in full force to show some love for the new Chicken McBites at McDonald’s!

Who doesn’t love hip hop icons Salt N Pepa? They made a rare appearance/performance for the introduction of the tasty McBites!

Another rare appearance of note is Connor Cruise, who made his second appearance out as DJ C Squared and kept the crowd on their feet with some hot beats.

A solo Brandi Glanville was also at the event.  Apparently her Valentine’s day will not involve hunk Gerard Butler, who was recently asked about her comments about him.

A slew of others were out in Hollywood for the launch of the new cousin to the McNugget, including Glee’s Harry Shum Jr., Christina Milian,  and Pretty Little Liars star Lucy Hale!

Harry tweeted from the savory event, writing:

“Salt n Pepa performing AND trying McDonald’s new #ChickenMcBites at the launch event 2night! Cool!”

Remember Tom Cruise‘s little man? Don’t be surprised if you see Connor Cruise spinning on the ones and twos at your next Hollywood event!

The 16-year-old mixmaster as been all over Los Angeles establishing himself as Hollywood’s newest club DJ. Cruise, A.K.A. DJ C Squared, hit the turntables at the grand opening of a New Era flagship store in LA Last night.  

After a successful set, he chatted with party goers and photographers before leaving the event (hey, it was a school night!). Connor said he was honored to be a part of the celebration and that the New Era caps are his absolute favorite!

Other guests in attendance included Pete Wentz, Nick Swardson (Jack & Jill), Michael Rapaport (The Baytown Disco) and Melissa Joan Hart (Melissa & Joey).

In other Cruise news, Connor’s famous father showed off a new ‘do at the ‘Mission:Impossible – Ghost Protocol premiere in Germany. We like! 

Tom Cruise treated his adopted son Connor, 14, to some VIP fun at the Daytona 500 over the weekend.

How is it possible that Connor is 14 years old already? Has it really been that long since Cruise and his ex-wife Nicole Kidman adopted him?

Cruise was the honorary pace-car driver for this weekend’s festivities and was also reunited with the car he drove in his racing movie Days of Thunder.

The venerable car race took an interesting personal turn when Cruise came face-to-face with country singer Keith Urban, who happens to be Nicole Kidman’s current husband.

Urban was at the 500 to as a featured artist at Sunday’s pre-race concert. 

Both Urban and Cruise were special guests as the drivers’ pre-race meeting, and Cruise was said to have “heartily applauded” for Urban when his name was called, according to the Baltimore Sun.

TMZ reports that the two gentlemen later shook hands before chatting and laughing for a few minutes.
