With the tragic news of Gary Coleman‘s death still fresh in our minds, it is hard to ignore how Gary’s life took a turn that was similar to other doomed child stars.

It’s no secret that Hollywood is a tough place, especially for children. The steady stream of pressures that are put on child celebrities (not to mention the free-flowing drugs and alcohol around Hollywood) are often citied as factors in the disastrous careers and tragic deaths of some young stars.

With this in our minds, we decided to take a look back at some of the most tragic deaths of some of Hollywood’s most beloved stars.

Corey Feldman announced that he chose not to attend Corey Haim‘s funeral yesterday because of the Haim family’s desire for privacy. (Bizarrely enough, Haim’s funeral was funded by a memorabilia collector who plans to auction off Haim’s possessions–so maybe the Haims have a weird definition of “privacy?”) However, being kept out of Haim’s funeral didn’t keep Feldman from publicly mourning his friend: Feldman wrote an open letter to Haim, explaining why he wasn’t at his funeral and telling Haim that he loves and misses him and explaining how Haim’s death has effected the world:

I never knew your death would have such a huge impact on the world. I learned something Corey, there are a lot of people out there who really love you, and appreciate the joy you have brough tho their hearts. I only wish you could see the way the world is mourning over your absence. I wish you could see how big the story is. I wish you could see your face finally filling the cover of People magazine and Entertainment Weekly! That would have meant so much to you. It is such a shame they all had to wait until you were gone to give you the respect you were due as an actor which is what you truly were. The great Canadian actor Corey Haim!

Feldman also announced that he will be planning a Haim memorial in Los Angeles.

Since news of ’80s child star Corey Haim‘s death at the age of 38 broke this morning, a number of celebrities have come forward to express their grief. But the comment that carries the most weight comes from Haim’s frequent collaborator, Corey Feldman.

In addition to co-starring with Haim in 1987′s The Lost Boys and the following year’s License to Drive, Feldman shared the small screen with his namesake in the reality series The Two Coreys.  In an entry titled “R.I.P Corey Ian Haim 1971-2010″ on Feldman’s Web site this morning, Feldman writes,

“I was awakened at 8:30 this morning by my brother and sister knocking on my bedroom door. They informed me of the loss of my brother Corey Haim. My eyes weren’t even open all the way when the tears started streaming down my face. I am so sorry for Corey, his mother Judy, his family, my family, all of our fans, and of course my son who I will have to find a way to explain this to when he gets home from school. This is a tragic loss of a wonderful,beautiful,tormented soul, who will always be my brother, family, and best friend. We must all take this as a lesson in how we treat the people we share this world with while they are still here to make a difference. Please respect our families as we struggle and grieve through this difficult time. I hope the art Corey has left behind will be remembered as the passion of that for which he truly lived. ~ Corey”

In recent years the pair’s relationship had become complicated, with Feldman refusing to have contact with Haim unless Haim shook his drug habit.

The World was stunned to wake up this morning and hear about Corey Haim‘s tragic, accidental drug overdose. Celebrities have taken to their Twitter accounts to express their sadness over the popular 80s teen star’s passing.

Corey Haim, who passed away of an apparent drug overdose at the age of 38 early Wednesday morning, may have struggled with substance abuse in his later years, but the actor’s personal demons are eclipsed by an accomplished career that launched him into stardom in the 1980s and showed recent signs of a comeback (Haim was scheduled for several projects in 2010). As we come to grips with the Lost Boys actor’s untimely passing, let’s look back at happier times with a photo gallery of Haim’s heyday.

Actor Corey Haim, who rose to fame in the 1980s in such movies as The Lost Boys and Lucas, died in the early-morning hours on Wednesday. It’s suspected that Haim, who had struggled with substance abuse in the years following his ’80s heyday, died of a drug overdose, though an autopsy is still pending.

According to Coroner Lt. Cheryl MacWillie, Haim died at 2:15 a.m. at Providence St. Joseph Medical Center in Burbank, California, after collapsing in his mother’s Oakwood, California, apartment. Sources tell TMZ that Haim, who had been suffering for the past few days from flu-like symptoms, rose from bed at just before 1 a.m. and collapsed in front of his mother, who then called 911. Though four prescription bottles were found nearby, apparently no illicit drugs were found in the apartment.

It’s pretty much a given for celebrities to surround themselves with celebrities. They share the same interests, the same goals, the same massive bank accounts—similarities that average joes could never truly understand.
