David, 20, made a big announcement that he’s taking two years off of music to pursue a full-time mission in association with the Mormon Church, TMZ reports. 

With tears streaming down his face, the emotional singer told the crowd: 

“It’s not because somebody told me that I was supposed to do it, not because that I no longer want to do music anymore, but it’s because it’s the feeling that I felt that I need to do next in my life.”

“Who’s that other lady?” David asked when a picture of Jennifer Lopez, Ryan Seacrest, Randy Jackson and a long-haired Steven Tyler popped up on a monitor.

“No, that’s Steven Tyler,” said host Wendy Williams after a moment of confusion, prompting the studio audience to erupt in laughter.

“No I was looking at Jennifer Lopez,” said a giggling David, “I didn’t know she had a blonde hair now.” Oh David, everyone makes mistakes every now and then.

David was on Wendy’s show today to promote his new album, The Other Side of Down. Unfortunately his gender slip-up will probably overshadow the rest of his appearance (but also get it a lot more views).

Officials said they would announce the fundraising total this week. The 2008 Stand Up 2 Cancer telethon raised more than $100 million.

But, as is usually the case with Archuletta, there’s a perfectly innocent explanation for it all, so just calm down, everybody. Turns out Archie was just lending support to a buddy, Filipina “Pyramid” singer Charice Pempengco. The misunderstanding did, however, lead to a series of comically awkward posts on Archuleta’s Twitter account as he struggled to explain the situation. At first Archuleta clarified,

“Mental note to self: always ask where before you go! Wasn’t my kind of place lol, and I had no clue! I guess you live and learn. The upside was that Charice was awesome, and she has an incredible voice. Hope that clears things up! Been seeing some of the tweets.. sheesh!”

Then, realizing that his words might be construed as not particularly friendly to the homosexual community, Archie played the “some of my best friends are gay” card:

“I have friends who are gay, and they’re great people. Whether they’re gay or not doesn’t change how I think of them. I have nothing against anyone, I’m sorry if that’s how it came across. I’m just not into the partying scene lol.”

LOL indeed. It seems that being in the wrong place at the wrong time is a hereditary disposition for the Archuleta men.

Radar Online reports that the 18-year-old American Idol favorite David Archuleta‘s parents, James Jeffrey Archuleta and Lupe Marie Archuleta, quietly filed divorce papers back in February—perhaps not so coincidentally, a month after James was busted for soliciting sexual services in a Midvale, Utah, massage parlor.

Citing irreconcilable differences, the estranged couple initially agreed that Lupe would pay approximately $349 a month in child support (the couple has a total of five children), splitting any additional costs that would arise from raising the children. The couple also agreed that they would sell their house in Murray, Utah, and split the proceeds.

However, in July Lupe filed a Motion to Set Aside Divorce Settlement, claiming  that Jeffrey’s annual income was actually about five times higher than he originally claimed. (Jeffrey countered that, after overhead and other expenses, his income was in line with what he claimed.)

The couple had filed for divorce once before in 2002, but decided to stick together shortly after David placed first in a Star Search competition.

Maybe Archie’s upcoming Christmas tour can bring them together once again?

The American Idol singer, who will be going on tour with Demi Lovato this summer, shot a guest appearance on Miley’s Hannah Montana show, in which they sing a song called “I Wanna Know You.”

An ice storm ravaged the Northeast on Friday, knocking out power in more than a million homes throughout New York and New England.

And yet somehow, Mother Nature’s wrath spared New York radio station Z100′s Jingle Ball concert on Friday night, thus allowing Lady GaGa and David Archuleta to appear in the same room, resulting in one of the most awkward exchanges ever committed to video.

Twenty-two-year-old “Poker Face” singer GaGa (born Joanne Stefani Germanotta) and 17-year-old American Idol alum Archuleta (born under a bad sign) both performed at the concert. The electronica diva and the scruffy-mopped crooner hit it off—sort of—backstage and, well, did this:

Whoa; that’s some white-hot eroticism between those two. Put yourselves on Hook-Up Alert, people; these guys will be engaged before the year is out. Bank on it.

Cyrus and Archuleta will be joined by Kristen Chenoweth, James Taylor, the Cheetah Girls, Darius Rucker,  and Trace Adkins along the New York City street route of the famous parade.

So if you want to see pop youngins’ lip-synch on gaily decorated floats, be sure to tune in to the coverage on NBC on November 27.

Both performers, the scruffy rocker and the well-represented baby-faced crooner, have albums dropping within the next two weeks. It’s on now!

“I was really nervous at the beginning because this is something I always wanted to do, and it happened so fast,” Archuleta says about the rush to record for the holidays. “The night of the finale, they’re like, ‘OK, you’re gonna be working with Jive.’ I was like, ‘Whoa.’ “

As Page Six puts it will “age and experience win out over youthful charisma?”

Does the music-buying public like cocky goatee wearers or chipmunky teenagers better?

Naturally, David’s control-freak dad, Jeff Archuleta, is cut in for a piece of the action. He’ll be co-managing his kid’s work affairs with Azoff’s Jared Paul, who also handles Nick Lachey and New Kids on the Block.

The deal comes as Archuleta prepares for the November 11 release of his debut album.

“This is the most amazing sweet 16 that a girl could have!” the tanned-for-the-occasion Cyrus declared as she took the stage to perform.

Miley’s boy toy Justin Gaston joined her, dad Billy Ray and older sister Brandi to sing Billy’s “Achy Breaky Heart.”

But the starlet wasn’t happy with just performing and leaving.

“Its been a long night,” she said, “but I’m still ready to party and ride some rides!,” she said at midnight.

She might’ve also had to make time for giving dirty looks to Selena Gomez‘s best friend Demi.

TMZ reports that the virginity poster boys were so thrilled about their victories at this year’s Teen Choice Awards that they blogged on their MySpace page, thanking their fans for voting for them.

So far, so gracious. But wait: One of the awards that they claimed to be especially thrilled with, the Most Fanatical Fans award, was actually won by American Idol runner-up David Archuleta.

D’oh!

Now granted, the Jonas Brothers have some fanatical fans. But it doesn’t seem fair to steal the thunder from Archuleta, who has so little going for him that he’s resorted to dressing like a 72-year-old golfer.

Crafty little cherries that they are, the Jonases have since removed the Most Fanatical Fans reference from their page.

Sadly, the pain created in David Archuleta’s heart by this slight won’t be so easily erased.
