Pain & Gain, starring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne Johnson and Anthony Mackie, ruled the box office with $20 million in its opening weekend, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The Michael Bay action film, based on the true story about a group of Miami bodybuilders and their crimes in the late ‘90s, beat out last week’s topper Oblivion, starring Tom Cruise, and the Jackie Robinson biopic 42.

Fellow box office newcomer The Big Wedding failed to finish in the top three, despite a star-studded cast that includes Amanda Seyfried, Robert De Niro, Susan Sarandon and Diane Keaton.

Next weekend’s box office will surely be a record-breaking one, as the first of several heavyweights will kick off the summer blockbuster season.

Iron Man 3, do your thing.

The summer blockbuster season is still months away, but it looks like G.I. Joe: Retaliation gave moviegoers an early start this weekend.

The sequel to 2009’s G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra grossed $15.5 million domestically, bringing its two-day total to $26 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The film, starring Dwayne Johnson, Bruce Willis and Channing Tatum could also finish Easter weekend with $50 million.

Last week’s box office winner The Croods grossed another $10.7 million on Friday, while Tyler Perry’s Temptationmade $9.4 million in ticket sales.

The Host and Olympus Has Fallen round out the top three for Friday estimates.

The first G.I. Joe film grossed $54.7 million domestically in its opening weekend nearly four years ago. The movie went on to make $150 million ($302 million worldwide).

Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman’s Identity Thief returned to first place at the box office during Oscars weekend, grossing an estimated $14.1 million. The comedy’s grand total since opening two weeks ago now stands at $93.7 million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Newcomer Snitch, starring Dwayne Johnson, and the animated flick Escape From Planet Earth earned $13 million and $11 million, respectively.

Silver Linings Playbook is the only Oscar-nominated film that finished the weekend in the top 10, with $6.1 million in ticket sales.

With its weekend earnings, the David O. Russell picture has officially surpassed the $100 million mark since its wide release in November.

Keri Russell’s new horror film Dark Skies opened with a weak $8.9 million. The film couldn’t catch up to Safe Haven and last week’s box office giant A Good Day to Die Hard to finish in the top five.

The movie repertoire of Dwayne Johnson is nothing if not a roller coaster of ups and downs. With each good film, there seems to be a smattering of bad films — in the eyes of critics, at least. However, Johnson’s latest movie, Snitch, could be a serious “up” for the actor.

Scheduled for release on Friday, February 22nd, the crime-drama revolves around a freight company owner who gets involved in the inner workings of drug cartels in order to save his son from a life in prison. The margin for error in this type of film is colossal: It’s easy for directors and actors in action films to get too trigger happy, so to speak, and overrun the movie with literal action, with no substance to make it mean anything emotionally.

Having said that, early reviews of the film are in, and the general critical consensus is that it’s a surprisingly effective showcase for Johnson’s acting chops.

In 2013, it seems like everything’s turning up Dwayne Johnson. In the next 12 months, Johnson has three dramatically different projects coming to theaters: the thrill ride Fast & Furious 6, black comedy Pain & Gain, and this Friday, the crime thriller Snitch.

The variety of genres these projects span epitomizes his evolution from “former wrestler” into multidimensional performer, able to move easily from comedy to action to virtually any genre or project Hollywood throws at him.

That said, there was a time when Johnson was known almost exclusively as “The Rock,” and associated with professional wrestling rather than being the most charming and likeable star in the entertainment industry.

Celebuzz has been a fan of the actor since he charmed us in The Rundown, and has since carried a broad range of movies through some sometimes lackluster premises (seriously, brother? The Tooth Fairy?).

Nevertheless, we still love Dwayne Johnson, whether he’s taking bad guys down or wearing a tutu.

This Friday, a surprisingly small batch of movies are set to hit theaters, at least after last week’s deluge of titles. And now that Valentine’s Day has come and gone, romance is no longer a priority on the silver screen.

Despite that preponderance of love-driven stories, action, well, kicked its butt, as A Good Day To Die Hard took the top spot over Safe Haven and Beautiful Creatures at the box office. But will Bruce Willis triumph again, or will a new contender knock the sequel out of its comfy first-place perch?

Opening Friday, February 22nd is the action-thriller Snitch, starring Dwayne Johnson, as well as Keri Russell‘s sci-fi-horror movie Dark Skies.

Snitch follows a desperate father who goes undercover in a Mexican drug cartel in order to save his wrongfully-accused son. Although Johnson’s movies typically receive mixed critical acclaim at best, his box office success has been decidedly more consistent. That said, early reviews of Snitch have been pretty complimentary, so maybe the new thriller will enjoy a good run during its theatrical release. With an all-star supporting cast featuring Benjamin Bratt and Susan Sarandon, Snitch seems poised for solid success.

On the other hand, Dark Skies could end up overshadowing Snitch, at least commercially speaking. A sci-fi horror film about a family that’s terrorized by an unknown entity, Keri Russell stars as its matriarch, and it follows in the footsteps of a series of enormously successful similar films, including the Jessica Chastain film Mama, which became a surprise blockbuster when it was released in January.

So which film will rise to the top this weekend — Snitch or Dark Skies? Or will moviegoers remain loyal to Willis’ enduring franchise and prove that, yes indeed, it’s incredibly difficult to kill off the Die Hard series?

Fast & Furious 6 makes a strong argument for more movies featuring cars that explode out the front of planes.

It’s all-out “vehicular warfare” in the new trailer for the next installment in the Universal Pictures franchise. Fast Five stars Vin Diesel, Paul Walker and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson return to Car-Fu the hell out of every moving vehicle imaginable. Including a tank.

The sixth Fast & Furious movie finds master car thief Dom (Diesel) and his crew living on the run from the authorities – desperate to get back to the States. In order to return home, they must team up with lawman Hobbs (Johnson) to take down a murderous band of criminals.

Director Justin Lin returns to helm his fourth Fast & Furious film, which crashes into theaters Memorial Day weekend.

James Franco refuses to let one news cycle go by without letting us know he’s out there. The busy actor/writer/director/soap opera villain is interested in directing and starring in adaptation of James Ellroy’s American Tabloid. “It’s not all put together yet,” Franco told MTV on Tuesday. “It’s still early. You’re getting the scoop.” Tabloid follows a five-year span in the lives of three law enforcement officers, from 1958 to 1963, culminating in the assassination of President John F. Kennedy. If Franco can do for this story what Ben Affleck did for Argo, we’re in. [MTV]

Classic Hollywood: The filmmakers behind Journey 2: The Mysterious Island are turning a popular internet meme into a movie.

Journey 2’s Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will produce and potentially star in the film Teddy Bear, which is based on an illustration depicting a sword-wielding teddy bear defending a young girl from a monster. The story is being kept top-secret, but it’s expected to be a franchise-starter. We just hope this leads to an eventual crossover team-up with Ted. [The Hollywood Reporter]

HBO’s Bored to Death is the latest TV series to pull a Lazarus act. After months of rumors, HBO Films has officially announced development on a Bored feature film. Series stars Jason Schwartzman and Zach Galifianakis are expected to reprise their roles in the film, which, like the series, will center on Schwartzman’s amateur sleuth character. [Deadline]

The Dilemma put Ron Howard in Movie Jail, and now he’s looking to author Neil Gaiman to break him out. The Apollo 13 director is in talks to helm a live-action adaptation of Gaiman’s novel, The Graveyard Book, for Disney. The story centers on a young boy who, when his parents are killed, is raised by ghosts in a cemetery. As a teenager, the boy finds himself on the run from his parents’ killer. Howard is expected to tackle Graveyard once he completes post on Rush, his Formula-One racing drama due September 20. [The Hollywood Reporter]

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo’s David Fincher is looking at another bestselling novel to adapt. Fincher is reportedly in talks to helm a big-screen version of Gone Girl, based on the book by Gillian Flynn. Girl is a twisted thriller revolving around the disappearance of a woman on her fifth wedding anniversary. The only thing that could make us more excited for this movie is if producer Reese Witherspoon signs on to play the missing wife. [Variety]

Marvel Studios is looking at two unlikely actors for possible roles for the sci-fi heavy Guardians of the Galaxy: Jim Carrey and Adam Sandler. Wait, what? According to a Tuesday post on the website Latino Review, which has quite the track record when it comes to Marvel scoops, the studio is checking the stars’ availability to board the James Gunn-directed movie. Guardians centers on a unique band of space-set heroes, including a talking tree. Word ‘round the campfire is that Carrey and Sandler are most likely in the running to voice the team’s most popular character, the gun-toting Rocket Raccoon. We’ll see how this all pans out when Guardians lands in theaters August 1, 2014. [Latino Review]

Mark Wahlberg doesn’t want to wear sweatpants anymore.

At least, that’s what his character Daniel Lugo says in the new action comedy Pain & Gain.

On Wednesday, Paramount Pictures unveiled the brand new trailer for the Michael Bay film, based on the true story of a group of Miami bodybuilders who get involved in a kidnapping plot.

Wahlberg and his bulging biceps are in good company. Dwayne Johnson, Anthony Mackie, Tony Shalhoub and their respective muscles also star in the film, along with Rebel Wilson, Ed Harris and Ken Jeong.

Pain & Gain is Bay’s first foray into dark comedy, but from this first look, there are still plenty of explosions, fast cars and testosterone to go around.

Wahlberg, who will reteam with Bay in 2013 for the next Transformers movie, recently told Collider about the chemistry he had with his blockbuster of a director on set.

“We kind of complemented each other throughout the entire process, what he does and what I do and what we were able to do together, and then after that I was like, ‘Dude we gotta work together again,’ and he was like, ‘Well I got a project, you interested?’”

Pain & Gain opens in theaters Apr. 26, 2013.

Though his personal life has suffered in the past few weeks, Tom Cruise‘s still laughing his way to the bank.

Forbes magazine recently released its annual list of the world’s highest-earning actors and Cruise, 50, dominated over his competitors with a whopping $75 million — almost twice what the first runner-up had raked in between May 2011 and May 2012.

After Cruise, J. Edgar actor Leonardo DiCaprio and Jack & Jill star Adam Sandler came in second at $37 million, while Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson closed the gap with $36 million in third place.

In compiling this yearly list, Forbes considers factors such as upfront pay, profit participation, residuals, endorsements and advertising work.

The ranking comes shortly after news that Cruise’s third wife, actress Katie Holmes, filed for divorce.

The former couple has already signed a divorce settlement. Their only child — 6-year-old Suri Cruise — will be living with Holmes for the majority of the time while Cruise has agreed on supervised visits.

“The case has been settled and the agreement has been signed. We are thrilled for Katie and her family and are excited to watch as she embarks on the next chapter of her life,” Holmes’s attorney Jonathan Wolfe confirmed the deal on Monday. “We thank Tom’s counsel for their professionalism and diligence that helped bring about this speedy resolution.”

Josh Hutcherson and Vanessa Hudgens are ready to walk on the wild side — in their new film, that is.

In the newly released trailer for Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, we get a look into the sequel for the 2008 sleeper hit Journey to the Center of the Earth.

There are some new additions this time around, including Vanessa, Dwayne Johnson (aka The Rock) funny man Luis Guzman, and the legendary Michael Caine, so check out the trailer above!

According to IMDB, the film is about:

“Sean Anderson (Josh) partners with his mom’s boyfriend on a mission to find his grandfather, who is thought to be missing on a mythical island.”

Vanessa Hudgens is about to take a little trip—and thanks to the magic of movies, you’ll be able to go along with her.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the former High School Musical beauty is in final negotiations to star in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, the sequel to 2008′s Journey to the Center of the Earth 3D. In the film, Hudgens will play a Pacific Islander who falls  for explorer Sean Anderson, who will once again be played by The Kids Are All Right actor Josh Hutcherson. Anderson travels to a mythical island in a quest to find his missing grandfather (played by Michael Caine). Wrestler-turned-actor Dwayne Johnson will also be along for the adventure.

Filming is tentatively scheduled to begin in late October in Hawaii and North Carolina, for a September 23, 2011 release.

Fans will be seeing a lot of Hudgens on the big screen in coming months; she’s also starring in the upcoming Beauty and the Beast adaptation Beastly and the fantasy thriller Sucker Punch, which are both scheduled to hit theaters next March.

It’s no easy feat to out-glam comedic dreamboat Steve Carell, but Anne Hathaway did the trick at Monday night’s Get Smart premiere in Westwood, California.

The big-screen remake of the ’60s TV classic puts Carell in the role of inept snooper Maxwell Smart, and Hathaway portrays his competent and far sexier partner, Agent 99.

Anne kept her smile on high beams throughout the evening, despite upheaval in her house of love.

The Daily Mail reports that the Devil Wears Prada star has dumped longtime boyfriend Raffaello Follieri. Raffaello’s legal entanglements had threatened to tarnish Anne’s more-pure-than-Katherine Heigl image.

Plus, Anne apparently didn’t like the idea of date night being restricted to a conjugal visit.

Bet Raffi’s gonna miss her by more than that much.

Blockbuster action director Michael Bay‘s really expensive toy commercial Transformers was the big winner at the MTV Movie Awards last night, taking Best Movie over crowd-pleasers Juno and Superbad. Gee, can you tell the general public votes online for the winners, and most of them just got their first computers?

But the real action occurred earlier that day.

The show was business as usual last night at Universal Studios’ Gibson Amphitheater, despite a horrific fire on Sunday morning that destroyed portions of the Universal Studios backlot. King Kong, the Back to the Future clock tower, the New York City set and Universal’s film vault were all either destroyed or damaged in the blaze. The amphitheater is located merely a hundred yards uphill from the fire’s location.

Despite plans to open them later than usual, Universal’s theme park and CityWalk were both shuttered for the day, and a smoky haze lingered in the air.

Some celebrities were able to work the fire to their advantage and actually crack funny at the podium. The Office star Rainn Wilson joked that he set the fires to strike for the wrath of God on Hollywood.

“I meant to destroy the amphitheater,” he cracked. “I made a mistake on MapQuest.”

But the evening’s biggest star appeared to be Johnny Depp. Depp took home two awards (Best Comedic Performance for his iconic Jack Sparrow character and Best Villain for Sweeney Todd) to thunderous applause and a standing ovation when he first took the stage. Hipster Juno screenwriter Diablo Cody could be seen clutching her hand to her heart, which is how the rest of the world seems to feel about the eccentric heartthrob.

Depp was his customarily soft-spoken self when accepting. “I’m not really sure how this happened because you can ask anybody—I’m not a very funny person,” he said when accepting his first award.

“Two times in one night—that’s nutty. Wow…I have to thank all of you who voted for me. That’s really a great honor, thanks for sticking with me on this very obtuse and strange road…I’m not particularly eloquent at the moment, but thank you so much,” he said when accepting the Best Villain trophy.

Depp missed out on making a clean sweep of the male category, as he was trumped by Will Smith‘s win for Best Male Performance for I Am Legend.

“I’ve dedicated my life to creating and trying to do things that are different,” Smith said, only sounding a tiny bit like he might actually have joined the Church of Scientology. “I’ve dedicated my life to making everything that I touch better…This film was hard, and I was on camera for an hour by myself, and y’all still went to see it. Thank you very much.”

Best Female Performance went to teen pregnancy role model Ellen Page, for indie breakout film of last year Juno. Page seemed a little out of place when she walked the gold carpet before the ceremony began.

“It’s a lot,” she says. “The fans and the Pussycat Dolls just walked by. I embrace it all,” she told E! News.

The awards ceremony has long been the venue for which celebrities make appearances to promote their upcoming summer movies. Stars with films on the horizon who were in attendance and presenting awards included Will Smith and Charlize Theron (Hancock); Tom Cruise, Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr. (Tropic Thunder); Will Ferrell (Step Brothers); Steve Carell, Anne Hathaway and Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (Get Smart); Edward Norton and Liv Tyler (Incredible Hulk); and Seth Rogen and James Franco (Pineapple Express). Host Mike Myers also made a joke about promoting his own summer movie offering, The Love Guru.

He also appeared to be stumping for another Wayne’s World movie, as he lamely trotted out Dana Carvey for a Wayne’s World bit.

The only actors who made an appearance without a movie to promote appeared to be Sarah Jessica Parker and Jennifer Hudson. Sex and the City is already raking it in at the box office.

Sarah Jessica, who appears to be everywhere these days, wouldn’t confirm that there is a sequel in the works.

“Honestly,” she said backstage, “Michael Patrick King and I have not even talked about the idea.”

Tom Cruise presented funnyman Adam Sandler with the Generation Award, honoring his contribution to penis humor and silly voices in cinema for the past two decades.

“He liberated us form the presumption that it was not cool to punch old people…and he taught us how to celebrate Hanukkah by drinking gin-and-tonicas,” Tom Cruise said in his presentation. Sandler accepted his award by performing his own version of Carly Simon‘s “Nobody Does It Better” and then speaking.

“Thanks, guys, that was fun—the most arrogant thing I’ve ever done,” the funnyman. “I appreciate everything over the years…Thanks to you guys for always being so cool to me.”

The show was mostly low-key and without comedic highpoints like Sarah Silverman‘s ridicule of Paris Hilton last year. The only actually humorous on purpose moment was the  short film of Ben Stiller, Robert Downey and Jack Black making a viral video to promote Tropic Thunder, in which Downey Jr. tortures Black’s testicles. Haven’t we all wanted to kick Jack Black in the nuts?

The only possibly controversial moment occurred when Seth Rogen and James Franco produced what looked like a bag of marijuana and began smoking a joint from it while presenting an award to Downey. Their upcoming movie The Pineapple Express has them toking vast amounts of weed.

In what they later claimed was an MTV-sanctioned bit, the actors jokingly claimed to the audience the marijuana was fake and not “really good shit.” MTV suits must have changed their minds at the last moment because cameras panned away pretty darned quickly, as the audience tittered nervously. They were presenting Downey and director-actor Jon Favreau with the award for Best Summer Movie So Far for Iron Man.

“Thanks, fellas, for the intoxicating introduction,” Downey said.
