It’s the oldest argument in the book to blame someone’s success on their looks.

And Jason Ritter — nominated for a Best Guest Actor in a Drama Series Emmy for his show Parenthood — isn’t buying it.

“That’s what [co-star Lauren Graham] keeps saying. I don’t think so — not with all this mess on my face,” Ritter told Celebuzz at Wednesday’s Aid Still Required benefit party in Hollywood.

What else did Jason say about his looks and Emmy nomination?

Ritter, 32, did acknowledge he has more that a few female fans — even with the scruff: “Maybe!”

Graham, who plays Ritter’s love interest on the show, joked this week in a video post on THR.com that he was controversially nominated because of his “extreme hotness” and that it was the “beefcake award.”

Looking uncomfortable and fanning his face with his hands, Ritter said, “I am very hot in this moment.”

Ritter played more coy to Celebuzz when talking about the nomination.

“It’s huge. I still can’t quite believe it. I think somebody’s just messing around,” Ritter said.

“I think there are lots of times especially when they are bigger awards, lead actor, there’s talk about it and buzz. People get hints that they might win it — ‘Stay up late for the announcements,’” Ritter explained. “I didn’t hear any of that stuff. It was a total surprise. I never would have thought in a million years.”

Awards-watch website GoldDerby.com predicted several months ago, before the Emmy nominations were announced, that Ritter was a 100:1 shot to win the award.

The Primetime Emmy Awards will be broadcast Sept. 23 from L.A. on ABC. Parenthood returns Sept. 11 on NBC at 10 PM.

Instead the Academy of Television Arts and Sciences decided the English series, Downton Abbey, has more stand out apparel to ooh and ah over.

But which series has created more fashion buzz around town?

The influence of Mad Men, featuring the handsome Jon Hamm and busty Christina Hendricks in the sixties’ advertising-centric world, has spread like wildfire throughout the fashion community.

Celebs love their 60s-inspired pieces —  some faves being dresses that cinch at the waist, cropped pants, shrunken cardigans. Social media sites such as Pinterest have pages purely devoted to the seductive style.

And retail power houses, including The Gap and cosmetics brand Estee Lauder, have launched limited-edition collections reflecting the retro look.

Based in the early 1900s, about the years leading up to World War I, Downton Abbey is progressively making a name for itself, as well.

A-listers Vanessa Hudgens and Jessica Simpson have both been spotted in their wide brim hats, similar to the historic Brit style of the PBS series.

Legendary designer, Ralph Lauren, even played the Downton Abbey soundtrack in the background of his fall runway show.
