Newt Gingrich will be popping up on NBC’s Parks and Recreation and it was all by accident. The politican happened to run into filming of the comedy while in Indianapolis at the St. Elmo Steak House. According to the Indy Star, Mike Schur, the series co-creator, jumped at the chance to incorporate him into the episode. “It was a completely random chance,” Schur said. “But you can’t pass up on an opportunity like that.” [TV Guide]

ABC’s Castle hit a new series low Monday night without Dancing With the Stars as its lead in, garnering only 8.4 million total viewers and coming in third for the 10 o’clock hour. Its lead in of Extreme Makeover Home Edition averaged only 4.4 million viewers. NBC’s The Voice took top honors in total viewers (12 million) and in the ad-coveted demographic. [TVLine]

Hulu has launched a new show based upon Liz Tigelaar’s book, Pretty Tough. The series, starring Adelaide Kane, Crystal Young and 2 Broke Girls’ Beth Behrs, is about two sisters on the opposite side of popularity in the privileged word of Malibu. Pretty Tough is making its exclusive U.S. premiere on Hulu in a 5-episode format. [Hulu]

Downtown Abbey writer Julian Fellows says he has no plans to re-cast the role of Matthew Crawley on the fourth season of the British series. Dan Stevens, who plays Crawley on the show, hasn’t renewed his contract. According to The Daily Mail, he’s planning to only appear in the premiere episode so that he can go after other opportunities. The red carpet was filled with sky-high poufs, sleek chignons and ’20s-inspired updos, that while eye-catching, don’t exactly translate from the red carpet to real life.

Munn’s sleek bob complemented her vintage Armani dress and 20-karat Neil Lane necklace perfectly yet still felt fresh.

Sunday’s Emmy Awards offered plenty of fabulous fashion inspiration, as the stars of the silver-screen dazzled on the red carpet in gorgeous gowns.

Whether you’re a fan of Heidi Klum‘s sexy seafoam number, Emily VanCamp‘s grey gown or Claire Danes‘ sunny Lanvin dress, there was something for just about everyone at this year’s Emmys.

The red carpet was filled with an array of colorful, figure-flattering dresses that you don’t have to have a sample-sized figure to pull off — and now you don’t have to have a Hollywood-sized budget to rock them either.

Now that the red carpet is all rolled up, ABC’s Modern Family kids are taking long naps, and Showtime’s Homeland cast are trying to get those sharp-pointed trophies in their carry-ons past the TSA screeners, it’s time to look back at Sunday’s 64th annual Primetime Emmys and determine: What did we learn?

Looking over all that was seen and heard on stage, analyzing the trends, crunching the numbers, and taking some long and hard looks at Sofia Vergara’s wardrobe malfunction, we can boil it all down to five lessons. (Well, six if you count this one: No one needs to see Girls‘ Lena Dunham eating a cake while sitting naked on a public toilet. That image is going to haunt too many of last night’s viewers for a long, long time.)

Lesson No. 1: The Emmys are predictable. So predictable, in fact, that they inspired Jon Stewart to drop an f-bomb in his acceptance speech as he marveled over The Daily Show’s 10th straight win. Most pundits had predicted victory for such Emmy perennials as TDS in the Variety Show category, Modern Family in the Comedy category (its third striaght win), The Amazing Race in the Reality-Competition category (its ninth win), and Claire Danes (her third nomination and second win, though all were for different projects). Such patterns lead to charges that TV Academy members are voting autopilot and ignoring fresher competitors, thus reducing suspense, making the show a bore, and turning off potential Emmy viewers. In fact, these complaints themselves have become a predictable annual ritual.

Lesson No. 2: Except when they’re not. Not many predicted the Homeland sweep. A fifth straight win for Mad Men seemed more likely, as did a fourth straight win for Breaking Bad star Bryan Cranston. So here’s what you wanted, Emmy nitpickers, a fresh new series that’s recognized for its quality right out of the gate. That does happen sometimes. (Indeed, it happened with both Mad Men and Cranston the first time they were eligible.)

Still, even the surprises were sort of predictable. Jon Cryer’s lead comedy actor win was a shock, even to him, except that he’d won once before for the same character as a supporting actor. Asked to choose between two Breaking Bad regulars for supporting actor, voters went with Aaron Paul, who’d won once before, even though Giancarlo Esposito’s character had dominated the drug drama last season before going out with a boom.

Lesson No. 3: Homeland did not end HBO’s Emmy reign. Yes, it marked a big win for Showtime, the first Best Series victory for the premium cable channel.But Showtime didn’t win a single Emmy for any other show. HBO still won 23 prizes, more trophies than any other channel, as it does seemingly every year, thanks in part to its dominance in the movie/miniseries category (this year, that meant five awards for Game Change). HBO’s Game of Thrones won as many statuettes as Homeland (six, albeit in lesser categories that were handed out last week at the Creative Arts Emmys). CBS was the second biggest winner, with 16 Emmys, and half of those were for awards shows. When it comes to original programming, HBO is still the channel to beat.

Lesson No. 4: When the Emmy love runs out, it really runs out. Longtime Emmy darling Mad Men didn’t just lose the Best Drama Series prize. It lost every single award it was nominated for, all 17 of them, marking the biggest shutout in Emmy history. Among those were its acting nominations; Mad Men has been nominated for acting 25 times in five seasons and has won zilch. At least it has those four previous Best Drama wins to its credit. Curb Your Enthusiasm’s loss in Best Comedy last night set another record; no other show, comedy or drama, has been nominated for Best Series seven times without winning. Previous Emmy fave 30 Rock was up for 13 awards this year and went home empty-handed. And then there’s Bill Maher, who’s the Susan Lucci of the Primetime Emmys. As of last night, he’s been nominated a record 29 times without winning.

Lesson No. 5: Hosting remains problematic. Jimmy Kimmel earned mixed reviews at best. He’s a funny guy on his own show and a knowledgeable TV fan, but his dry, acerbic style didn’t play well in this setting, and many of his big gags (the bizarre  pre-taped opening sequence, or the prank that involved Tracy Morgan pretending to pass out on stage in order to create a Twitterstorm of fake news) were underwhelming. But then, you can’t blame ABC for hiring him. Each of the Big Four networks gets to air the Emmys only once every four years in rotation, and each network usually uses the opportunity as an excuse to plug its own programs. Usually, that means hiring its late-night talent to host (though last year, Fox, with no late-night talent, went with Glee‘s ubiquitous Jane Lynch instead). So there’s a lack of continuity from one year to the next, and no host gets to become seasoned on the job, the way Billy Crystal or Whoopi Goldberg did at the Oscars or Neil Patrick Harris at the Tonys. Sure, the networks could hire an outsider (like, say, TBS’ Conan O’Brien, who did a great job hosting the Emmys in 2002 and 2006, when he worked for NBC. But no network is going to pass up the chance to plug its own talent. Maybe Kimmel will do a better job when ABC inevitably asks him to host again in 2016.

Go big or go home was the motto for last night’s Emmy’s fashion; colors, cleavage and cut-outs ruled the red carpet.

As Brad Goreski predicted, color was one of the night’s biggest trends. TV’s top talent didn’t shy away from bold shades, with canary yellow, cobalt, orange, oxblood and sea green among the Emmy’s hot hues.

In an unusual red carpet color choice, Claire Danes, Julianne Moore and Julie Bowen proved that canary yellow is actually incredibly flattering for evening wear.

Other stars tapped into the season’s “it” hue, with Jenna Malone and Julie Louis-Dreyfus looking fab in wine-colored gowns, while Tina Fey, Ashley Judd and Kelly Osbourne all went with grape gowns.

Channeling a completely different vibe, Heidi Klum, Julianne Hough and Sofia Vergara recalled the colors of the ocean in teal and sea green.

But color wasn’t the night’s only big trend…

Starlets sparkled in silver, gunmetal and sequins, from Lucy Liu‘s futuristic Versace dress to Nicole Kidman‘s teal sequin embellishments and Hough and Vergara’s shimmering mermaid gowns.

Sexy silhouettes abounded. Cleavage-boosting sweetheart necklines, curve-enhancing mermaid silhouettes, stem-spotlighting slits, shoulder-baring one-shoulder gowns, skin-revealing sheer cut-outs appearing  — you name it and we saw it. And some stars – Cat Deeley, Hough, Malone and Vergara — amped-up the sex appeal even more and sported more than one of these sexy trends.

Balancing out the night’s sultry styles were the sophisticated column gowns worn by Girls‘ star Allison Williams and Downton Abbey‘s Michelle Dockery and the full-skirted dresses that Moore, Zooey Deschanel and Ginnifer Goodwin all wore. Architectural pleats, frothy layers, asymmetrical hemlines, and eye-catching embellishments made these more covered-up silhouettes stand out among the sexier styles.

It seems Angelina Jolie‘s right leg has quite a following.

Earlier this year, the actress set the 2012 Academy Awards abuzz when she stuck out her right gam on the red carpet. And at Sunday night’s Emmys, the move was out in full force as many leggy ladies followed suit with thigh-high slits.

Jena Malone, Giuliana Rancic, Alexandra Breckenridge and Maria Menounous all put their pins on display.

But who was Jolie’s biggest leg-flashing contender?

None other than Heidi Klum. The Project Runway host flashed her supermodel stems up-to-there in an Alexandre Vauthier creation.

“I love the color, I love the cut…[and] I like a high slit,” Klum told Ryan Seacrest on the E! red carpet show. And she must mean it, as the model-turned-desinger was rocking not one, but two slits on her low-cut sea-form green down.

Even though Modern Family was the heavy favorite heading into Sunday night’s Emmys, co-star Nolan Gould admitted he was surprised when the show actually won its third-consecutive prize for Best Comedy Series.

“[The] third time is, like, people still like us after three years?” he quipped to Celebuzz at the FOX Emmys after-party on Sunday. “It’s just so amazing and such an honor and such a blessing.”

“I get so excited,” Gould — whose costars Julie Bowen and Eric Stonetreet also took home Emmys for acting — continued, on the show’s many wins. “They are like my family on the show; I care so much about them. Seeing my mom get up there, or my uncle — you’re just so proud of them.”

Meanwhile, Gould, 13, gave Celebuzz a little preview on the show’s upcoming fourth season, including how his character, Luke, will react to Gloria’s (Sofia Vergara) new baby.

“I actually don’t think he’s gonna mind,” he said, “because Manny and Luke decided that they’re big boys now … But I am interested to see how Luke responds to everything. Everyone else is going to have a real grounded vision of things. Except, Luke won’t, because Luke’s out there. He’ll probably come up with some strange, dastardly plans and whatnot.”

First-time Emmy attendee Georgia King couldn’t help but be in awe of the Emmy-winning cast of Modern Family. After all, her highly praised NBC show, The New Normal, could be vying for Emmy gold along with the celebrated ABC cast next year.

“I was really star-struck by certain cast members of Modern Family,” the Scottish actress told Celebuzz Sunday night. ”I think Eric Stonestreet, who plays Cameron, was my big ‘Oh my God!’ moment. I think he’s a genius. I really do.”

King’s New Normal has already drawn comparisons to Modern Family. The show follows the lives of a gay couple and the young woman who agrees to be their surrogate.

How is King reacting to the show’s success?

“It’s my first series regular in America, and it’s just been extraordinary,” she said. “Very exciting and overwhelming and fast-paced. The scripts just seem to keep getting better and better. It’s really wonderful to explore the characters. The response we’ve gotten so far has been pretty great. It’s having a big effect for a lot of people who feel it’s very important to them, so that’s very exciting.”

Meanwhile, for her first Emmys, King decided to stand out in a gold dress by Badgley Mischka.

“I  kind of just go towards the gold, like a magpie,” she said. “The glitteriness. It’s very different from the character that I play on the New Normal. I just felt like something a little different.”

Move over, Mad Men. There’s a new best drama series in town.

Denying the HBO hit series a record-setting fifth drama Emmy, Homeland — the breakout TV thriller about an American military officer turned terrorist — gave Showtime its first series win ever at Sunday’s 64th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Ahead of its second season kicking off this week, Homeland snagged four statuettes, with Claire Danes and Damian Lewis wining best lead actress and actor in a drama, respectively.

But Homeland‘s big-time Emmy success was no shock to series star Navid Negahban. “I was biting my nails, but I wasn’t surprised,” he told Celebuzz at the awards ceremony, held at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. “I had a feeling. Let’s say I was hoping. But deep down you have some kind of feeling. To me, I love everyone. It’s fantastic.”

What did he think of his costars’ wins?Negahban — who plays Al Qaeda’s solitary and slippery leader Abu Nazir in Homeland — was overjoyed to watch as Danes and Lewis accepted their awards. “I was so happy,” he said. “Both well-deserved. I mean, the whole team. My God, that was great.”

The actor — who had a recurring role on 24 — was  over the moon about response to the Showtime series. “You know how it feels, you’re working, you’re going through it and then all of a sudden, you sit back and you [realize] people appreciate it,” he explained. “That’s a great feeling. It [is] fantastic.”

And most of all, it’s the viewers’ praise that hits home for Negahban. “The biggest reward we could get is the way the audience is responding to us,” he said. “I appreciate [the Emmys] that they gave us. We have it.”

“But do you know what it means when people tell me, ‘Oh my God, I love the show. I can’t wait for the next episode,’” he continued. “Or, ‘I sat down and watched the whole series in one sitting.’ I’m glad I’ve been part of something beautiful.”

Jeremy Davies’ Emmy win shocked just about everyone at the Creative Arts Emmys on Saturday, including the actor himself.

“I met the great, great Michael J. Fox at rehearsals yesterday … I really thought, if anyone amongst the equally brilliant individuals nominated alongside me, I thought it would go to him,” the actor, who won Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for his chilling performance on the FX drama Justified, revealed to Celebuzz.

“Look at me. Does this look right? What’s wrong with this picture?” he quipped.

“I want to reassure you that I reported the robbery properly.”

Still, that didn’t stop the actor, who was nominated in the same category last year, from doing a little celebrating.

So, who was the first person he called after he won?

“I actually called my sister, my sister Katie,” he said. “She was stratospherically overjoyed.”

It was a clean sweep for Homeland in the Emmy categories for Lead Actor and Lead Actress in a Drama Series, which were handed out Sunday night at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles.

As expected, Claire Danes took home the award for her riveting performance as Carrie Mathison, a CIA agent battling bipolar disorder.

In her humble, yet quirky speech, the pregnant star — who was arguably the biggest lock of the night — took time to thank everyone from her fellow-cast members to her “baby daddy,” Hugh Dancy.

Just prior to her speech, Danes’ co-star, Damian Lewis, shocked just about everyone and their mother by taking home the award for Lead Actor, beating heavy favorite and three-time winner Bryan Cranston.

“I don’t really believe in judging art, but I thought I’d show up just in case,” he quipped on stage. “It turned out all right!”

That was only the start of their luck, as Homeland took home the Emmy for Best Dramatic Series.

Zooey Deschanel is even adorkable at the Emmys.

The New Girl star stunned in a pale-blue strapless tiered tulle Reem Acra gown. With her dark locks swept up in a low bun and sparkling in Forevermark jewels, Deschanel showed some skin with her low-cut sweetheart neckline.

What look was the small-screen star going for?

“She wanted to look like a princess,” revealed E! Fashion Police host Kelly Osbourne.

Deschanel, who is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, even added a dash of dork to her classy ensemble. The night ahead of the awards show, Deschanel tweeted a snap of her tips adorned with images of old-school TV sets. “Televisions on my thumbnails…for the #emmys!” the star wrote.

And Deschanel never fails to disappoint on the red carpet. At last year’s Emmys, she wore a strapless pink chiffon Monique Lhuillier creation with a striking red belt.

Jimmy Kimmel may have promised the “biggest prank ever” to hit the Emmys, but the late night host was decidedly tame during his opening monologue.

The night’s emcee kicked things off with a nod to So You Think You Can Dance beauty Cat Deeley, saying, “It will all be worth it to find out if the award for best reality host goes to Cat Deeley.”

However, the topic quickly turned to Hollywood’s favorite subject: politics. ”Are any of you voting for Mitt Romney?,” Kimmel asked, resulting in a collection of cheers and jeers from the audience. “See, that’s why Kelsey Grammer didn’t come tonight. Being a Republican in Hollywood is like being a Chick-fil-A sandwich on the snack table at Glee.”

Who else was on Kimmel’s hit list?

Kimmel then turned his attention toward Girls writer, director and star Lena Dunham. “She’s 26 years old, and she’s already nominated for acting, writing and directing. I don’t have a joke here. I just want everyone to feel bad about themselves.”

The late night veteran kept things short, ending  with, “Tonight, you will be asked to perform your most challenging role yet: that of an actor who has to pretend to be happy for another actor.”

Nicole Kidman looked positively Emmy-worthy Sunday night as she stepped onto the red carpet at the 2012 Emmys.

Donning a white bedazzled dress, Kidman — who is nominated tonight for Hemingway & Gellhorn – added yet another stunning look to her red-carpet collection as she showed everyone else how a true movie star works a carpet.

She also took time to reveal a bit of news, telling E! host Ryan Seacrest that she will be joining her husband, Keith Urban, on American Idol next year.

“Next year, I’ll be there; this year, I’m in France … I’m playing Grace Kelly,” she said.

Urban confirmed his deal with American Idol earlier this month.

Black is the new black for January Jones.

Living up to her red carpet reputation, the always-chic Mad Men star — who plays Betty Francis on the hit AMC drama series — made a statement in an all-black ensemble.

The Mad Man star stunned in a semi-sheer black number by high-fashion favorite Zac Posen.

And she let the dress do all the talking.

With a slicked-back up ‘do and sans jewels, Jones’ let her dramatic, floor-grazing gown — featuring a criss-crossed bodice and full-bodied skirt — take center stage.

And she wasn’t the only actress from Mad Man — which has a chance to make history by snaring its fifth best drama award — shining on the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards.

Emily VanCamp is taking a fashion cue from Victoria Greyson on the 2012 Emmys red carpet: The Revenge starlet stunned in a grey J. Mendel dress.

The Emmys presenter told E! News that when it comes to choosing the perfect red carpet outfit, she looks for something comfortable. “I like to be understated and comfortable,” she said. “That’s the best way for me to do these kinds of things.”

Despite looking flawless on the red carpet, VanCamp’s not always as camera-ready — and that’s become an issue now that the success of ABC’s Revenge has made her a paparazzi favorite.

What did VanCamp have to say about her new superstar status?

“I never have any idea I’m being photographed. It’s one of those obnoxious things that happens in this business,” she told E! “There are so many wonderful sides to it, but it’s kind of weird when people are hiding in bushes when you’re just trying to do to the grocery store in your sweats.”

However, VanCamp is grateful for her ABC show’s success. Not only did her primetime gig introduce her to her boyfriend Joshua Bowman, but it also brought her to the Emmys.

“You have to be cautious of it, but it’s part of [being famous],” she said. “You can’t complain. Look where we get to be now!”

The Emmys used to be considered no more than an early precursor to the awards season style watch that starts in January. But times have changed. Now, the stars of the small screens bring the glitz and glamour to television’s biggest night each and ever year.

Stepping out onto a sun-soaked red carpet, actresses like Christina Hendricks, Jessica Paré, Kat Dennings, Emily VanCamp, Hayden Panettiere, Ginnifer Goodwin and many more managed to stun in their Sunday best – despite the scorching heat – as they made their way into the 64th Primetime Emmy Awards at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles.

What stars left tongues wagging?

Mad Men stars brought the house down in their fashion-forward looks. Paré wowed in a one-shoulder white number, Hendricks let it all hang out in a beige, belted Christian Siriano and Elizabeth Moss rocked a Dolce & Gabbana strapless gown.

Fashion Police hosts brought their A game, as per usual. Kelly Osbourne was demure in a single-strapped, pale-purple gown, while Giuliana Rancic — who made her much-anticipated return to the Emmys red carpet after fighting back from breast cancer — stuck her leg out in a high-cut, black dress.

Host Jimmy Kimmel promises that it will be a night to remember for more than just the fashion. He’s planning to pull the biggest prank in Emmys history.

“I am gonna do something very weird during the show,” Kimmel told Entertainment Weekly. “I think it could possibly be the biggest prank ever pulled, as far as number of people involved. Possibly. I haven’t researched it, but it’ll definitely be right up there. The audience will be a participant in this.”
