When putting together a list of the best and worst songs of 2012, it’s impossible not to think of Carly Rae Jepsen’s breakthrough pop hit “Call Me Maybe.”

Unlike 2011, which rightfully belonged to British songstress Adele and her smash album 21, 2012 was the year of singles. Arguably the catchiest song of 2012, “Call Me Maybe” was a perfectly crafted pop song from a little-known Canadian artist. It was universal; everyone — from celebrities to Olympic athletes and university students — was a fan. Even self-absorbed hipsters found themselves singing along — unironically! — to the viral hit.

It’s no wonder Jepsen’s “Call Me Maybe” leads the pack in Celebuzz’s list of the Best Songs of 2012. And don’t worry, Directioners, we didn’t forget One Direction.

However, not every song was a universal hit this year. In fact, many songs fell flat. From the played-out shenanigans of LMFAO and their party rocking to Gotye’s own viral hit “Somebody That I Used to Know,” these are just a few of our  picks for the year’s worst. And please, don’t even get us started on Flo Rida’s “Whistle.”

Some of these songs are so bad, they have us begging for 2013. After all, it’s the year Beyonce makes her epic comeback — and reclaims her thrown as music’s most talented diva. Wait, is it 2013 yet?

“Somebody That I Used to Know,” the radio-friendly, frequently covered smash by Gotye, reigned supreme in 2012 — at least among Spotify users.

The Swedish-based music streaming service announced this week that the single was the most popular song of the year, beating out equally pop-tastic hits “Call Me Maybe” by Carly Rae Jepsen and “We Are Young” by fun., which came in at second and third place, respectively.

As for individual artists, David Guetta came out on top as Spotify’s most popular male artist, while Rihanna took home the title for most popular female artist.

Guetta’s fifth studio album Nothing But The Beat was the most-streamed album of the year, with Gotye’s Making Mirrors, Drake’s Take Care, Lana Del Ray’s Born To Die and One Direction’s Up All Night rounding out the top five.

Since hitting mainstream airwaves earlier this year, “Somebody That I Used to Know” has been covered by everyone from the cast of Glee to heavy metal rocker Eric Calderone.

Since unleashing his cover in June, Calderone’s cover has been viewed by more than 1 million people on YouTube — a sliver of a number when compared to Goyte’s 350 million views.

One of the hottest breakthrough artists nominated at tomorrow’s 2012 MTV Video Music Awards (8/7 c), Australian-born Gotye is riding a cool wave of success.

His chart topping hit Somebody that I Used to Know hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and became an international sensation.  Gotye is only the sixth Australian to ever reach the top of that chart.

The eclectic and creative artist, who sees himself “as more of a tinkerer than a musician” released three albums and multiple remixes before Somebody made him a household name among smart music fans.

Gotye is nominated for two MTV Video Music Awards, including Video of the Year and Best Editing – both for Somebody that I Used to Know, featuring Kimbra.

From “Call Me Maybe” to “Gangnam Style,” 2012 was a big year for YouTube success stories.

We are counting down the top five biggest viral videos of the year, but some of the results may shock you — including Carly Rae Jepsen‘s “Call Me Maybe.”

The 27-year-old singing sensation debuted her smash single on YouTube Mar. 1 and soon became a prodigy of Justin Bieber after he heard the music-making magic.

But, it isn’t Jepsen’s personal link that topped the viral video charts for “Call Me Maybe.”

Coming in at number 4 on the countdown, with over 55 million YouTube views, is a cover of Jepsen’s ”Call Me Maybe” performed by other young Hollywood stars Justin Bieber, Ashley Tisdale and Selena Gomez.

The trio join the roster of A-listers such as Katy Perry, James Franco, and Kelly Clarkson who have all created sing-a-longs to the catchy tune, showing their love for Jepsen’s work.

Of course, number one on the charts should still come as no surprise.

Gaining over one billion views, Korean pop star Psy topped the list with his popular dance video “Gangnam Style” that released on the web in July 2012.

Following the footsteps of Jepson’s YouTube hit, the Korean pop song went Hollywood.  A

s a sure sign of flattery, stars including Britney Spears and Ellen have been spotted reenacting the challenging dance moves on-stage or in their own spin-off videos.
