In an email to the Associated Press, longtime Madonna rep Liz Rosenberg said the signer was following standard procedures in compliance with the local government, and not using her fame to advance the process.

Rosenberg did not respond to requests for a copy of the email at press time.

The child in question is a 4-year-old girl named Chifundo “Mercy” James. Mercy’s mother was 18 and died shortly after childbirth. Her father is alive but reportedly keeps little contact.

Attempts to adopt Mercy on Madonna’s part have been attacked by a private organization called the Human Rights Consultative Committee, saying “Mercy James is a child who has her extended close family members alive and we urge Madonna to assist the child from right here.”

Meanwhile, Madonna visited Malawi on Monday with her fist adopted son David Banda, where the two met with his biological father at an orphanage where he once lived.

“Madonna is committed to maintaining an ongoing relationship with David’s Malawian roots,” Rosenberg said.

Madonna has two biological children, 12-year-old Lourdes and Rocco, 8. She recently divorced from British director Guy Ritchie.

We just wanted to highlight the bruise that the 40-year-old director was sporting under his peeper as he left his Punchbowl pub in London at 1 a.m. this morning.

Yes, times are tight all over, but is Ritchie being forced to do double duty as a bouncer at his watering hole?

Not content to let his ex-wife, Madonna, corner the market on model-dating, 40-year-old director Ritchie was spotted last night having dinner with Australian former supermodel Elle Macpherson at Notting Hill Brassiere in West London.

The helmsman and the clotheshorse apparently had a grand old time while chowing down; the two spent two hours at the eatery before parting ways at 12:30 in the morning.

Ritchie—most recently linked to heiress Jemima Khan in late December—and Macpherson, 44, took care to leave the restaurant separately so as not to be caught together by the shutterbugs.

Somehow, Ritchie managed not to race to the nearest rooftop to shout word of his good fortune loud enough for all of London to hear. See, now that’s class.

The Sun reports that pop singer Madonna, 50, has been granted temporary permission to officially move the couple’s sons, 8-year-old Rocco and David, three, to America—and that she’s likely to be granted permission to move them permanently in the very near future.

“Everything is going to be resolved in the next couple of weeks,” a source close to the ongoing negotiations tells the paper. “Everything is going well. It’s pretty amicable at the moment. Things are progressing.”

Rocco and David will join Madonna and their 12-year-old half-sister, Lourdes, in New York, where Madonna keeps a penthouse apartment.

Earlier reports indicated that Ritchie, 40, had a strong preference that Rocco be educated in London, but the British film director seems to be softening to the notion that the kids will reside in the Big Apple. Guy, who’s recently been filming his upcoming Sherlock Holmes flick in Brooklyn, dropped in on the kids at Madonna’s Manhattan pad two weeks ago, and was spotted skiing with Rocco at New Jersey’s Camelback Mountain Resort last weekend.

No word yet on what Guy’s opinionated father, John Ritchie, has to say about this new development.

In an interview with In Touch magazine, the father of RocknRolla director Guy Ritchie, 40, spared no mercy when discussing the divorce of his son and his ex-wife, 50-year-old pop singer Madonna.

“The worst thing would be if they reconciled,” the elder Ritchie says of the pair, who announced their split in October. “Guy is better off. He’s in the States with the children at the moment.”

Ritchie’s sentiment is understandable, as the Madge and Ritchie were particularly unpleasant toward each other in the wake of their break-up.

But while the two seem to have mended their fences somewhat for the sake of their children recently, Guy’s dad need not worry too much about a full-on make-up. After all, since the split Madge has been romantically linked to both New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez and Brazilian model Jesus Luz.

In fact, the elder Ritchie is just fine with his former daughter-in-law’s busy social schedule: “We hope she does have a lot of boyfriends,  because it means she won’t ever get back together with Guy!”

And by “we,” John presumably means himself and his son.

“Guy doesn’t mind at all [about Madonna's romantic life],” Ritchie says. “At least she won’t be looking for him.” Besides, with Guy rumored to be dating 33-year-old heiress Jemima Khan, chances are he has more pleasant things to do than ruminate over his ex-wife’s love life.

The bundled-up father-and-son pair worked on their technique, then hit the slopes. Rocco stuck close by his father throughout the excursion.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail reports that Ritchie, 40, accompanied his ex-wife Madonna, 50, son David Banda, 3, Madge’s daughter Lourdes, 12, and Rocco to the New York Kabbalah Centre earlier the same day.

Apparently, after an hour with Madonna, Ritchie took David and Rocco to the New Jersey ski resort.

A source tells the Mail that Ritchie and Madonna’s quickie divorce, which was settled in November, became official on January 7.

Are the exes spending time together to work out some sort of compromise? Or is Guy planning to snatch the kids?

That’s just the position British “eventer” Daisy Trayford, 27, has found herself in for the past two years.

Horse and Hound interviewed Trayford, who tells the publication that Madge, 50, bought two horses from the company she runs.

“She had the horses on trial and asked if I would go down and help get her going on them,” said Daisy. “The first year it was really busy. Last year was more difficult because she was on tour, but I was there most weekends, fitting it around my eventing.”

This week Trayford just may be jetting off to Florida to coach the recently-divorced pop star for two weeks at the FTI Winter Equestrian Festival.

Louis Vuitton model Madonna flew one of her horses, Boris, to the States six months ago. Last week he was joined by the other beast, young eventer Sportsfield Silver Lining.

“As soon as he’s there and settled in she wants me to go out,” said Daisy, who says she will probably receive a mere one-day notice to fly to Florida.

Madonna’s young coach gives the singer a glowing review, and describes educating her as “really good fun.”

“She’s a dream pupil,” says Trayford. “She’s very driven, listens to what you say and just wants to do it and improve. You can always get somewhere with someone like that.”

Hmmm. Young Brazilian model Jesus Luz got somewhere with Madge recently. Wonder what kind of lessons he schooled her in?

First the two spent Christmas together at their former English estate with their collective brood.

And yesterday, 40-year-old director Ritchie dropped in at Madge’s Manhattan apartment during a break in his latest project.

The Daily Mail reports that Ritchie, who’s currently filming scenes for his upcoming Sherlock Holmes flick in Brooklyn, was seen leaving Madonna’s sixth-floor apartment.

Is Ritchie, who’s recently been seen in the company of 33-year-old heiress Jemima Khan, ready to make nice again with his former spouse?

Maybe, but it’s more likely that he was dropping in to visit the estranged couple’s children, Rocco, 8, and adopted son David Banda, 3,; Madge herself was seen out doing errands at the time of Ritchie’s visit, bracing herself against the cold in a faux-fur coat.

Maybe Guy borrowed a couple of cameras from the workplace to set up a little stealth surveillance on the ex while she was out on the town? Turnabout is fair play…

Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law and Rachel McAdams descended on the streets of Brooklyn Thursday to film scenes for Guy Ritchie‘s upcoming Sherlock Holmes flick, due to hit theaters on November 20.

Law, 36, who plays Dr. John Watson, and McAdams, 30, who plays Irene Adler, were both sporting minor cuts and scrapes, but that’s to be expected.  So far the flick’s production has been plagued by mishaps, ranging from a tanker explosion to Downey’s crotch being set on fire.

Hopefully the change of shooting venue from England to Brooklyn will bring better luck to the flick.

And while he has his super-sleuths in New York, perhaps Ritchie can have them snoop into the case of a certain Yankees slugger who’s been acting awfully suspicious lately.

Never one to rest on his laurels, Ritchie, 40, has now reportedly begun dating Hugh Grant ex/rich heiress Jemima Khan, 33. Wow, looks like Kelly Reilly was the fastest rebound in history.

Khan, the daughter of Lady Annabel Vane-Tempest-Stewart (try putting that on a job application) and deceased millionaire financier James Goldsmith, is one of the rulers of London’s socialite scene. By all accounts, she is veddy veddy rich.

She was married to Pakistani cricket player Imran Khan for ten years, and has two sons, Sulaiman Isa and Kasim, with him. They divorced in 2004.

Khan began dating Hugh Grant in 2004. The actor and his lady were notoriously close-mouthed about their relationship, which ended in 2007.

Ritchie and Khan reportedly attended a London dinner party at the home of PR king Matthew Freud and his wife, Elisabeth Murdoch, who is the daughter of Rupert Murdoch, the media giant.

And they’ve already had a second date! They were at the Freud/Murdoch home again for a Christmas party this weekend, with a guest list that included Stella and Mary McCartney, Lily Allen, Mick Jagger and Kevin Spacey, the Mirror reports.

Guy is a talented director, but really—he doesn’t need a reputation for gold-digging.

Or is he just actually hobnobbing with his natural element?

Star claims that, despite her recent quickie (but not cheap) divorce from Sherlock Holmes director Guy Ritchie, 40, the Material Matron is bent on adding another child to her brood.

A longtime Madge pal tattles to the mag that the pop queen has already signed papers to adopt a four-year-old Malawian girl named Mercy James from the child’s grandparents, who are apparently too poor to provide care to the tyke.

“She’s hoping to bring the toddler home by early next year,” says the snitch.

Mercy’s grandfather, Saxon Maunde, is also quoted as saying, “It breaks our hearts to know she will leave us, but adoption is best for her.”

Madonna has a daughter from a previous relationship with personal trainer Carlos Leon and a son from her marriage to Ritchie—Lourdes, 12, and Rocco, 8, respectively.

She also finalized her adoption of three-year-old David Banda from Malawi in May of this year.

Star notes that British papers claim Madonna and her supposed boyfriend Alex Rodriguez, 33, will fly to Malawi to pick up Mercy James.

The UK’s Daily Mirror got an exclusive backstage interview with the boys of the band. Martin addressed not only a potential marital rift but also speculative discord within Coldplay.

At London’s O2 Arena, Mr. Paltrow sat down and confessed that he and his fellow musicians have called off the tour once or twice.

“We’ve split up on this tour,” Chris says of the band. “Each time we do, we get back together about 20 minutes later—we don’t even have to announce it!”

But what about his marriage to American screen queen Paltrow? There are several outlets dying to announce those two have parted ways.

Guy Ritchie will soon be taking a break from shooting the movie in his native London to spend the holidays with his ex-wife Madonna and their children. Santa’s bringing tension this Christmas!

Ritchie doesn’t seem concerned that his action-adventure take on Holmes will be going up against a comedy version starring Sacha Baron Cohen and Will Ferrell that producer/director Judd Apatow is heading up.

What does Guy have to worry about? He’s rich as hell, now!

Sure, Guy released a joint statement with Madonna on Wednesday morning, calling the $75 million divorce settlement figure he supposedly received “inaccurate.”

But he definitely got something.

EW reports that Bravo’s breakout hit The Real Housewives of Atlanta has been renewed for a second season. The series averaged 1.5 million viewers, and their reunion special was the Real Housewives highest-rated ever with 2.8 million viewers.

Elisabeth Hasselbeck complained on The View yesterday that she didn’t receive an invitation to the White House Christmas party. Us reports that the Republican conservative talk-show host said “Maybe I didn’t do enough for the Republican party this year,” on the show. It turns out that the snub was a White House oversight. “Following today’s live show, Elisabeth received a call from the The White House, and they both had a great conversation,” a View rep said. “The President’s office apologized and explained that she and her husband were indeed invited to the White House for Christmas and were sorry that it did not arrive. It was simply an oversight.”

Britain’s 3News reports that the notoriously outspoken Elton John recently expressed his views on Britian’s The X-Factor during a concert at London’s O2 arena. The show is the British version of American Idol. John said that he would rather have his “c**k bitten off by an Alsatian” than watch the show, adding: “My balls too.”

People reports that the Culkin family (including actors Macaulay, Rory, and Kieran) are heartbroken over their sister Dakota‘s death over the weekend. Dakota Culkin was killed after she stepped off a Los Angeles curb and was hit by a car. “They’re heartbroken. That I can tell you. They’re just absolutely heartbroken,” says Emily Gerson Saines, their manager. All of the actors have suspended work int he wake of the tragedy.

People magazine thinks so, citing a source that claims Gosling is still head-over-heels for the actress.

Ryan, 28, has been dating McAdams since 2004, on-and-off throughout their fan-fave courtship. In late 2007, after Gosling gave a candid interview to GQ Magazine, it seemed The Notebook costars had split for good.

In 2008 Gosling and 30-year-old McAdams were spotted kissing at a restaurant in McAdams’ native Toronto, followed by a lot more quality time between the duo stateside. Yet another breakup ensued in November of this year.

“[Gosling] is still close to McAdams’ family and he still speaks to Rachel, but they are both openly single,” a magazine source speculates of their current status. “He still loves Rachel and Rachel still loves him, but the timing is off and they can’t make each other happy right now.”

Almost immediately after the recent split, Celebuzz reported that Gosling enjoyed a fluid transition back to bachelorhood, keeping his options open and focusing on his other talents, mainly moonlighting as a DJ at exclusive L.A. spot Bardot.
