TV heaven may be getting two more angels.

On Tuesday, the news broke that ABC has pulled the acclaimed comedy Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23 from its Tuesday night lineup. And then on Wednesday, Deadline reported that FOX’s Ben and Kate is seeing a similar fate.

Why are these hysterical series failing?

Ratings. It’s all about the ratings.

Ben and Kate has been getting the lowest ratings during FOX’s new two-hour Tuesday comedy block. And, the second season of Apt. 23 hasn’t been getting promising numbers either, averaging only 2.85 million viewers, as Adweek reported — compared to its average audience of 6.37 million viewers for the first season.

These shows may have loyal fans, but sadly not enough of them. Ben and Kate and Apt. 23 join an illustrious list of other well-done shows that were taken too soon.

For example, Freaks and Geeks only ran on NBC for one season starting in 1999, starring actors who have since moved onto the A-List: James Franco, Seth Rogen, and Jason Segel. And who can forget FOX’s Arrested Development starring yet another famous star, Jason Bateman, that took a hiatus in 2006 before making a comeback on streaming video site, Netflix.

It isn’t everyday that a former teen heartthrob has enough of a sense of humor to play a larger than life version of himself– weekly– on a new outrageous network comedy, but that is exactly what James Van Der Beek took on with ABC’s Don’t Trust The B In Apartment 23.

Though there is a lot of comedy gold in Van Der Beek’s own past pin-up status (and the show has not shied away from mining that gold, whether it was making him re-perform classic Dawson lines accompanied by the single tear or creating a fake ad campaign for his celebrity fashion line), the second season of the show will be expanding past Van Der Beek’s own ’90s icon status.

When Van Der Beek’s character attempts to stage a Dawson’s Creek reunion in the Season 2 premiere, his plans go awry and the series ends up bringing in a couple other big name stars from that era to create its own monumental moment in pop culture.

What was the highlight of Don’t Trust The B in Apartment 23′s second season premiere for Van Der Beek?

“Mark-Paul [Gosselaar] was our big get,” Van Der Beek told Celebuzz when we caught up with him at the Paley Center premiere for his show in Beverly Hills, Calif.

“He’s a friend of mine, and he and I had talked about it, and I kind of talked him into it before the season started. So when we had the idea, we went to him, and he was game.”

In addition to being rivals in many young girls’ (and some young boys’) hearts, Van Der Beek and Gosselaar recently played rivals-turned-buddies of sorts on Gosselaar’s TNT legal series, Franklin and Bash.

“It was tit for tat. ‘Hey, I did your show, you have to come do mine!’ But he watched the show; he liked it; he was into it,” Van Der Beek explained.

“It’s fun to just play with this demented reality really. What better way for Mark-Paul to come on the show then to stage a former teen idol intervention for [James]?” Van Der Beek smiled.

After Van Der Beek takes some post-heyday lessons from Gosselaar to heart, he may only be looking forward in his life and career, rather than living in his glorious past, but that doesn’t mean he will have a change of heart and suddenly start to think of others first.

In the second episode of the season, Van Der Beek shared, “James throws an annual positivity party on Halloween, but it has nothing to do with wanting to spread light or love in the world. It just has to do with that he doesn’t like scary stuff, and he doesn’t like being scared, and he screams like a little girl if he is scared.”

So maybe fans will have a chance to see a slightly different side to James. As Van Der Beek laughed: “He’s definitely got a wimpy side!”

Nearly a decade after Dawson’s Creek, actor James Van Der Beek is back and playing an exaggerated version of himself on ABC’s Don’t Trust the B—- in Apartment 23, where his role on the teen show is a recurring punch line.

But it doesn’t mean the actor, 35, is holding any grudges against the teen phenomenon, which also starred Katie Holmes, Michelle Williams and Joshua Jackson. Actually, Van Der Beek previously revealed to Celebuzz he’d be up for resurrecting Dawson Leery if someone came up with a “brilliant” script.

Though a reunion is wishful thinking of critics and fans alike at least the show’s star is game: “If they came up with something brilliant and really, really, great, I’d do it.”

Recalling his first season on set, Van Der Beek dishes about his co-stars — revealing what Holmes was really like on and off set.

“She was straight out of Ohio, like ‘Oh my gosh! I can’t believe I’m here,’” the actor said during the 2011 interview, speaking about Holmes’ wide-eyed outlook and sudden fame.

“She was really sweet.”

According to Us Weekly, Holmes wanted to do a reunion years ago, but her estranged husband Tom Cruise reportedly forbid it.

Now living miles apart from the (fictional) seaside town of Capeside, Van Der Beek and his co-stars don’t get to see each other much any more.

“We don’t hang out like we use to. I have run into Josh [Jackson] and Michelle [Williams] over the years at different events, but we’re all grown up and have our own lives and families now,” he said.

Van Der Deek and wife Kimberly Brook have two children together, Olivia, 1, and Joshua, 3 months.

There must just be Dawson in the creek — er — air, as Apt 23 costar Krysten Ritter just recently copped to Celebuzz that she has never seen an episode. But perhaps she’ll finally get the chance, if the cast reunites.

“I can’t say I’m Team Dawson or Team Pacey — I’ve never seen the show,” she quipped.

“Everyone has another idea of him from Dawson’s Creek, but I only know him as my James… He’s heaven. He’s so sweet and a family man. He’s an amazing guy,” Ritter gushed.

Remember when James Van Der Beek told Celebuzz how sick of the Dawson’s Creek theme song he was? Well, we talked to former Creek star Busy Phillips at the Us Weekly Hot Hollywood Style party this week, who felt the same way.

“I don’t blame him,” said Busy. “I had only two years on the show of having to hear it, so he had four more years than I did, but I have a very similar reaction. Poor Paula Cole. She didn’t ask for that!”

Busy, who remains tight with former costar Michelle Williams, is currently on ABC’s Cougar Town, but according to Phillips, not for much longer.

“It’s not looking good, it’s just not looking good,” Busy said about Cougar Town getting picked up for season 3. “I’m bummed too, but I looked at the numbers this morning and I just can’t figure out the math in my head how this show is going to get picked up. But look, we would all be pleasantly surprised at those upfront’s if they announced they were going to bring the show back for the next two years.”

After playing Dawson Leery for six years on the hit WB drama Dawson’s Creek, James Van Der Beek returns to TV screens tonight — albeit, in a much different role.

The 35-year-old actor plays himself — or at least, a version of himself — on the new ABC comedy Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23, about a girl (Dreama Walker) who heads to New York and winds up living with a roommate (Krysten Ritter) with, uh, questionable morals. (Van Der Beek is Ritter’s snarky friend on the show.)

Earlier this week, Celebuzz spoke to Van Der Beek about playing himself, his days on Dawson’s Creek and his second child, son Joshua, whom he and wife Kimberly welcomed last month.

This show requires you to poke fun at yourself a lot; did you have an “anything goes” approach with the writers?
Yes. Absolutely. You have to. From the very beginning, I told the writers, “Don’t ever be afraid of offending me. Always go for what’s funniest. If there’s anything that really offended my sensibilities, I’ll let you know.” But so far, we haven’t found that yet. [Laughs]

Do you have any input as far as developing your character?
It’s a really collaborative process. What’s great about Nahnatchka Khan, who writes the show, is, I can pitch five ideas, and she’ll only take the two good ones. She makes me look like a genius. And I can come to her with something raw, that’s just kind of vaguely funny, and she’ll just lazer focus it in and make it brilliantly funny. I’m in really, really good hands.

But some of the stuff comes from stories I’ve told, or things that have happened to me. Some of it’s just, “Hey, wouldn’t it be funny if the fake me went on the fake Dancing With the Stars?” And so we do that. [Laughs]

You seem to be having a lot of fun lately, with ‘Don’t Trust the B,’ the Ke$ha video and the Funny or Die sketch; do you prefer doing comedy to, say, Sad Dawson?
[Laughs] You know, it definitely beats crying all day. I gotta say. I’ll balance it out this summer, I think, with some drama roles. That is what I grew up playing. Don’t ask me why, but for some reason, there’s a part of me that really loves doing the drama, as well, and the whole process of it. But I gotta say: Comedy is a lot of fun. It’s a lot of fun to laugh all day.

On Don’t Trust the B—-, you have to embrace a lot of your past; when Dawson’s Creek first ended, did you try to break away from that experience as an actor?
I think as a human being, I was just trying to find myself after that, which included stepping away from the thing that I had done for six years.

When is the last time you actually watched Dawson’s Creek?
Oh, Gosh. Season 4? [Laughs] Like, when I was there. I really didn’t watch the last two years, just because I felt it was better that way … I cared so much how fans connected to it. That was always really important to me. It felt like so much pressure to give them something worthy of their attention, and their passion and their time. And so, watching how [the episodes] turned out was just too stressful for me. So, I would just really focus and give my all in the day and then walk away. That was the healthiest thing for me to do.

Although, at one point — My wife had never seen the show, and my mom was like, “You’ve never seen an episode?” And my wife said, “No, I don’t need to watch the show.” The next thing I know, my mom comes down with a laptop with the pilot playing and puts it in front of my wife. She didn’t even ask. She just goes, “Here you go!” So, she watched the pilot, and I would kind of take a peek every once in awhile and go, “Who is that little boy?” [Laughs]

Do you remember what your wife said when she finished watching it?
Yeah. She watched it and she said, “That is not you. That is not my husband!”

When Kate Winslet was promoting Titanic 3-D, she said that hearing the song ‘My Heart Will Go On’ makes he want to throw up; what is your reaction when you hear the Dawson’s Creek theme song?
For some reason — and again, I need to get over this; I’m [a] 35-year-old, grown-ass man — but I want to hide somewhere [when I hear it]. If I’m in public and the song comes on, my first instinct is to find somewhere to hide — go in a corner, duck behind a rack, run into a dressing room, find the nearest restroom, like, just get out of there It’s a Pavlovian response, and I think it’s time for me to get over it. [Laughs] But for some reason, it just triggers inside of me. It’s a great song, but … It’s nowhere near my iPod.

A belated congratulations on your new baby son! Are you sleeping at all?
No, not really. I mean, in spurts — your little two-hour stretches of sleep.

Have you noticed any differences yet between having a boy versus a girl?
They all come out with their own personalities. They come out with their own thing going on, for sure. They’re both tenacious. They’re both full of fire, thank god.

Do you think you’d let them enter show business when they grow up?
I would not push them toward it in any way shape or form. I would encourage it as a form of expression — in their school, community theater, children’s theater; I think that’s a really healthy thing for kids.

But to do it professionally? I’ve always told people who ask, “Do you have any advice if I want to get into acting?” And I’ve always said, “If you cannot imagine yourself doing anything else, then do it.” If there’s something that you’re thinking, “Maybe I might want to do that — or acting,” do that. Do the other thing. It’s just such a crazy up-and-down ride. It’s just such a bizarre business. You’re gonna have a moment where you’re gonna wonder why you’re doing it. [Laughs] So, it really has to be the only option in your heart and soul. And if that happens, then I would put my arm around him and tell him I’ll cry with him when the times comes. [Laughs]

Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23 airs Wednesday nights at 9:30PM on ABC.

A few weeks ago, Kate Winslet made headlines when she openly poked fun at “My Heart Will Go On,” the ubiquitous, Oscar-winning song from Titanic, admitting to MTV that she feels like throwing up whenever she hears it.

Celebuzz kept that in mind during an exclusive interview with former Dawson’s Creek star James Van Der Beek on Monday. Now that the hit WB series has been off the air for almost nine years, does the show’s star harbor similar feelings about its theme song, “I Don’t Want to Wait” by Paula Cole?

“For some reason — and again, I need to get over this; I’m [a] 35-year-old, grown-ass man — but I want to hide somewhere [when I hear it],” Van Der Beek quipped, while promoting his hilarious new comedy, Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt 23. “If I’m in public and the song comes on, my first instinct is to find somewhere to hide — go in a corner, duck behind a rack, run into a dressing room, find the nearest restroom, like, just get out of there.”

It’s fatherhood times two for James Van der beek! The Dawson’s Creek star announced via Twitter that he and his wife, Kimberly Van der beek, welcomed their second child (a baby boy!) on March 13. 

The 35-year-old star said:

Had my first son this morning… well, actually, my wife had him. I just caught him. Wow. Heart expanding way faster than my brain…

How sweet! James and Kelly welcomed their first child, a daughter named Olivia, in September 2010.

James van der Beek and his wife Kimberly Brook just announced she is expecting baby number two, and she’s already got quite the bump!

At the Great Giggle Giveback benefiting Baby Buggy, Kimberly debuted her adorable baby bump. The couple, who have been married for a little over  a year, already have a daughter Olivia, who was born last September.

The Dawson’s Creek actor chatted about the Baby Buggy organization, and why they feel it’s important to give back.

“After having our first child, we saw firsthand how many things a baby quickly outgrows. And now that we’re on to our second, Baby Buggy is an organization we love to support as they very efficiently put items into hands that need them most.”

Baby Buggy is a nonprofit organization founded by Jerry Seinfeld‘s wife Jessica in 2001, and provides essential gear, clothing, and educational services to families in need.

They were also joined by Tiffani Thiessen at the store’s launch in Santa Monica. Check out the photos in the gallery!

It looks like James van der Beek and his wife are ready to expand their brood!

The Dawson’s Creek actor announced on Twitter that he and his wife Kimberly Brook are welcoming their second child, and said:

“Just when we thought we couldn’t feel any more blessed, it seems the universe has plans to give our daughter a sibling… #humbled“

How sweet!

James, 34, and his wife welcomed their first child, daughter Olivia, in September of last year.

Back in June, James talked to us about being a first time dad and said:

“Before you have a kid, you know you have to be less selfish and rearrange your priorities, but once your kid arrives, it instantaneously happens from the inside out. It isn’t about ‘Oh, I want to watch the ball game, but I have to change a diaper.’ It’s ‘Oh wait! I want to change the diaper. Forget the ball game.’”

The couple have been married since August 2010. Congratulations to the happy family!

James Van Der Beek is all grown up. With a wife and 8-month-old daughter, the actor has come a long way since his days on Dawson’s Creek and believes fatherhood has “completely changed” his life — for the better.

Celebuzz sat down with the first time father and his wife to chat more about their adorable daughter Olivia, why they’d love to plan a playdate with Katie Holmes‘ daughter Suri Cruise and why James is heading back to TV — to play himself!

The doting dad is all smiles when he talks about his wife and daughter. “Being a dad is awesome. I highly recommend it,” Van Der Beek told Celebuzz at the Pampers “First Father’s Day Cook-Out” held at Stage 37 in New York City.

“Before you have a kid, you know you have to be less selfish and rearrange your priorities, but once your kid arrives, it instantaneously happens from the inside out. It isn’t about ‘Oh, I want to watch the ball game, but I have to change a diaper.’ It’s ‘Oh wait! I want to change the diaper. Forget the ball game.’”

And when it comes to diapers, wife Kimberly Brooks says James is “very hands on.”

“Those two do everything together. They make pancakes, go shopping… He’s so hands on. No one — not even myself — can put a smile on Olivia’s face like James can,” she gushed.

And while James doesn’t see much of his Creek co-stars anymore, he’d still love to plan a playdate for their daughter and Suri Cruise.

“She is much older than Olivia, so Suri would probably get bored… But I think she’d make a good older sister-type playmate if they hung out,” the actor said.

Their first daughter was just born in September, but the couple are already thinking about having more kids.

“We would both love more kids. God willing, we would love to have a big family,” Brooks said.

Up next, the actor will be starring in a new ABC comedy, Apartment 23, alongside Dreama Walker and Krysten Ritter. “I play myself as the neighbor across the hall from these two dysfunctional female roommates. It’s like a modern day Odd Couple. It’s funny,” he said.

The WB was the first television network to feature shows that were directly targeted at teens. With hit shows like Dawson’s Creek, 7th Heaven, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and Roswell, the WB was the network that every teenager in America would turn on once they had finished their homework.

Most people know Michelle Trachtenberg as Gossip Girl‘s Georgina Sparks or, perhaps, as Mercy‘s white-clad healer Nurse Chloe Payne. But the 24-year-old actress recently showed off another side of herself recently as she rode home through the Holland Tunnel after a day on the set with her Mercy co-star James Van Der Beek (known forever in our hearts as Dawson).

Dawsons Creek star James Van Der Beek and his wife, actress Heather McComb, are calling it quits after nearly six years of marriage. 

The couple married in a Malibu ceremony in July 2003, shortly after he ended his six-year run on the show that made him a star.

His rep told Us Weekly, ”They remain good friends,” and that the pair split two months ago.

Both are 32-years-old. 

Hey, James Van Der Beek, that’s nice of you to give a bum a buck outside Glamour’s Reel Moments event at Chateau Marmont.

Plus, congrats—Entertainment Weekly is reporting that you’re guesting on an episode of One Tree Hill that’s set to air during November sweeps.

But, oh, the different paths you and your Dawson’s Creek on-screen girlfriends have taken since that show ended in 2003.

Did Katie Holmes happen to meet up with you, too, recently, as she did with your old co-star Joshua Jackson (who has his own series now on Fox)?

No? Well, the invite probably just got lost in the mail or something.

Anyway, have a good time with that one lone episode of One Tree Hill. And, er, maybe you should ask for the dollar back…
