“I don’t want to torture anything — it’s about trying to live a life where I’m not contributing to the cruelty in the world,” Chastain said after being named one of PETA’s sexiest vegetarians. “While I am on this planet, I want everyone I meet to know that I am grateful they are here.”

Chastain’s new menu options have also had an unexpected, positive effect on her waistline.

“I used to think about dieting,” she told Harper’s Bazaar in August 2012, “but I’m vegan now, so it’s not really a problem.”

Judging from his latest photo shoot, the movie star and musician does have a flair for being one with the giant mammals.

The photos, taken by famed shutterbug Warwick Saint on home soil in South Africa, were for a spread in Flaunt magazine.

“Me + the elephant, by Warwick Saint,” Leto, 41, wrote on Twitter earlier this week, along with a link to the photos on his website.

According to Saint’s Facebook page, the photographer and his subject took a detour during their trip to bungee jump off the famous Bloukrans Bridge in the province of Western Cape.

“About to do the highest bungee jump in the world! Bloukrans 215 meters 710 feet,” Saint wrote as the caption for one pre-jump photo.

My, my, how the time flies.

It’s hard to believe that actor-turned-rocker Jared Leto is turning the big 4-1 on Wednesday.

The former teen idol first broke onto the scene with 1994′s My So-Called Life as the object of Claire Danes‘ affections, Jordan Catalano. Since then, he’s found success in both big blockbuster movies and indie art house films, stepping into a variety of roles including 1970s Olympic hopeful Steve Prefontaine and a WWII soldier.

But Leto isn’t just wowing spectators on the silver screen.

Alongside his brother Shannon, the Louisiana-native is also the frontman for alternative rock group, 30 Seconds to Mars.

Over the years, the band has released three successful full-length albums, including the platinum-certified A Beautiful Lie.

Now, Leto is tackling his toughest role yet, playing a cross-dressing, transsexual woman with HIV during the height of the AIDS epidemic for The Dallas Buyers’ Club. The film co-stars Matthew McConaughey.

“Your body goes through weird stages,” he previously told  Vulture about fasting for his role.

“Sometimes it’s hard to hold onto water, for me it’s not about the most weight I can lose — it’s more to represent the character.”

This isn’t the first time the actor has taken extreme measures to transform his weight for his on-screen persona. In 2007, the self-professed vegan gained 62 pounds to play the infamous murderer of John Lennon in the flick Chapter 27 — and it came with dramatic consequences. Leto lost the weight so abruptly he was diagnosed with gout.

Covering up his frail figure with a white robe, the actor’s slender face — emphasized by his hair taut back in a net — says it all, as he filmed in New Orleans on Wednesday.

“Your body goes through weird stages,” the 40-year-old star previously told Vulture about fasting for his role as Rayon, a cross-dressing, transsexual woman with HIV during the height of the AIDS epidemic in 1986.

Celebuzz previously reported Matthew McConaughey’s stunning 50-pound weight loss and now his co-star, Hollywood hunk Jared Leto, is slimming down dramatically for his role as a transsexual woman in the film based on the life of Ron Woodroof, a Texas electrician who was diagnosed with AIDS in 1986 .

Photographer Terry Richardson posted pictures of the 30 Seconds from Mars frontman looking extremely gaunt on his blog and Twitter feed — and the 40-year-old even reveals to Vulture magazine he hasn’t eaten in a month!

Jared Leto is finding his feminine side.

The actor-musician stepped out in full drag on the New Orleans, La., set of The Dallas Buyers Club — a drama chronicling the real life of Ron Woodruff, a heterosexual HIV-positive drug addict who smuggled much-needed medication into the country in 1980s.

With a wig and full face of makeup, a skinny Leto donned a mini skirt and fur coat to transform into his character Rayon, a cross-dresser battling AIDS.

Before slipping into his lady getup on set, the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman prepped by saying goodbye to his body hair. “I just waxed my legs for this new role. Ladies, I feel your pain,” he tweeted, later adding: “What I have learned today: Beauty Is Pain #waxonwaxoff.”

Leto isn’t the only cast member transforming his physique all in the name of art. Matthew McConaughey — who stars as Woodruff — dedicated months to dropping weight, sticking to a restricted high-protein, low-carb diet ahead of filming. “I’m playing a guy who was sick and would have loved to have been healthier but wasn’t,” the actor told Us Weeklyin August. Shedding pounds is “more of a mental thing than a physical thing” he explained. “I’ll get down to the weight I need to get to. I’m on my way, and it’s what I need to do for the job.”

As production began on The Dallas Buyers Club last week, a skeletal McConaughey was almost unrecognizable, sporting a Burt Reynolds-like mustache, longer locks and a dark lesion on his forward, a telltale sign of AIDS affliction.

Michael Phelps was immortalized in cement this week. Well, at least his feet were.

Meanwhile, Phelps’ fellow Olympians the Fab Five ran into one of the hottest boy bands in town.

David Arquette, 41, and Courteney Cox, 48, have been very candid about their mutual adoration for one another despite their ongoing marital issues. She dished to Jimmy Kimmel that even though the two are now legally separated, she and Arquette are “best friends.” The two also agree that their biggest priority is their daughter, Coco.
