Writer/director/professional ass-kicker Sylvester Stallone returns to screens this week in the 1980’s action throwback Bullet to the Head. Starring as a New Orleans hitman, Stallone teams with a D.C. detective (played by Sung Kang) to avenge the deaths of their respective partners. If you’ve seen the trailers, you already know that at some point Stallone fights the massively built Conan (as in, quite literally, the man who most recently played Conan) in some kind of axe battle directed by action veteran Walter Hill.

Which is really all we needed to see to know that we’d be putting down on ten bucks. That said, what do the critics think of this one so far? Do they give it a critical pass, or just another bullet to the head?

“Tough guys with a code. Punishing bare-knuckled brawls. Broken glass. Some bluesy licks from Ry Cooder. These are the elements of a Walter Hill action movie, from great early films like The Long Riders and Southern Comfort to his paradigmatic buddy team-up 48 Hrs. to recent effects like the mistreated Undisputed and his new two-fister, Bullet To The Head…The X-factors tend to be the script and the performances, and those elements largely betray him in Bullet To The Head, which is a perfunctory exercise whenever Hill isn’t busying himself with gun battles, ax fights, and other mano-a-mano confrontations. He can only do so much.”

“I lost count of the number of noggins that were perforated by hot lead in Bullet to the Head, but it was more than a dozen. Henchman apparently is a particularly dangerous job description, at least in this movie, though they’re not the only ones who wind up with smoking holes in their foreheads. No doubt there will be those who decry this above-average action film for its nearly constant chatter of gunfire and its frequent bursts of red mist, signifying a gunshot striking human flesh. And yet this film, by director Walter Hill, a particularly gritty action veteran, holds your attention without insulting your intelligence — too badly.”

Sylvester Stallone has maintained a remarkable career not just as he’s gotten older, but literally out of the process of getting old.

Like 1980s action alums Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger, he’s embraced his advancing age, bringing the genre — and the audiences that love it — along for a familiar but provocatively unique sort of ride: after creating new installments for the two series that helped make him a star, Rocky and Rambo, he created the Expendables franchise, in which he and his contemporaries prove definitively they’re not too old to kick ass, even if they are, well, not quite as spry as they used to be.

By all accounts, Stallone’s latest, Bullet to the Head, seems to follow this now-proven formula: the film pits the sexagenarian against up-and-coming whippersnapper Jason Momoa in a battle for biggest bad ass, directed by another ’80s icon, Walter Hill. But whether the film revives Stallone and the genre in general or turns up dead on arrival, its release inspired Celebuzz to take a look back at some of the great ’80s movies that, well, still kick ass even today.

Truly “great” action movies must hit a few sweet spots in order to hold fans’ attention — they have to feature larger-than-life heroes, inventive stories, and of course, white-knuckle, pulse-pounding set pieces. In fact, many of the movies on our list don’t merely possess all three, they literally wrote the book on how to accomplish them in the best possible way.

Jason Momoa‘s star might be on the rise due to his most recent role as Khal Drogo on HBO’s hit show Game of Thrones, but he’s been hitting the pavement since 1999!

The 6’4″ Hawaii native was cast as Jason Ioane in Baywatch Hawaii back in the day, but that’s not all, click the pics to find out more about the studly breakthrough star!

The sexy thirty-two-year old actor found success in 2005 once he donned the role of Ronon Dex, a warrior from Sateda, in Stargate Atlantis. Things seemed to be going great for Momoa when unfortunately he found himself in a one sided bar fight in late 2008! The hunk was hit on the side of his face with a beer glass after a verbal altercation. Jason needed to get 140 stitches during reconstructive surgery! Ouch! Perhaps that’s where the slightly visible scar on his left eyebrow stems from?

Jason quickly recovered from the blow and in 2009 guest starred on several episodes of The Game. While he’s reigned on TV, it looks as if film is the next challenge for this proven warrior. This weekend he takes over for legendary action star, Arnold Schwarzenegger, as he stars in the remake of the 1980s classic, Conan The Barbarian. It’s a battle of the remakes!

That’s right, two of this weekend’s big box office releases are remakes of classic ’80s flicks. First up is Colin Farrell as a sexy (but evil!) vampire in Fright Night. Based on the cult horror film of the same name, Colin plays a baddie vamp who moves in next store to a teenager (Star Trek‘s Anton Yelchin) and reeks havoc on his town.

Next up, Game of Throne star Jason Momoa takes on a role made famous by Arnold Schwarzenegger.

It’s taken awhile for this one to get released, but Conan the Barbarian will finally hit the big screen on Friday. According to IMDB, the film (which is sure to have some epic battle sequences) is about “Conan the Cimmerian and his adventures across the continent of Hyboria on a quest to avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his village.”

Let’s not forget about the other two films being released this weekend!

Anne Hathaway and the positively adorable Jim Sturgess (who you probably remember from Across the Universe) play friends (with a bit of romantic tension) who promise to meet up one day every year, and the film chronicles them over the course of 20 years. Check out the trailer for One Day below!

On the more kid-friendly side, Spy Kids is back with Spy Kids 4: All the Time in the World, where a new generation of Spy Kids are born. It stars Jessica Alba, Joel McHale and Jeremy Piven. Check out the trailer below!

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery and from the looks of this outfit, Conan the Barbarian actor Jason Momoa is a HUGE Guns N’ Roses fan!

The buff actor was dressed in a top hat (where his long curly locks were still peeking through), sunglasses and a sleeveless shirt for an appearance at Planet Hollywood in NYC on Thursday! This is basically the outfit that guitar guru Slash has been wearing for the past two decades!

When he’s not shirtless and beating people to smithereens on Game of Thrones (rest in peace, Drogo) or in his new movie Conan the Barbarian, Jason Momoa is actually a pretty dapper dude!

The rugged beefcake has emerged as one of Hollywood’s leading butt-kickers this year thanks to the success of Thrones and now Conan. Momoa — complete with his badass-meets-interesting eyebrow scar — hit the premiere of his movie looking less barbarian and more GQ. With tinted yellow glasses and a slick grey suit, complete with pink pocket square, Momoa showed that he’s much more than a piece of meat (even though costar Rose McGowan couldn’t help but ogle his naked backside).
Conan, which Momoa stars in alongside Rose and Ron Perlman, is, according to IMDB:

“A quest that begins as a personal vendetta for the fierce Cimmerian warrior soon turns into an epic battle against hulking rivals, horrific monsters, and impossible odds, as Conan realizes he is the only hope of saving the great nations of Hyboria from an encroaching reign of supernatural evil.”

Life on Mars star Lisa Bonet, 41, and her beau Jason Momoa, 29, welcomed a son into the world just before Christmas.

The boy’s name, you ask? Why, Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa.

Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa is Bonet’s third child. She also has a 20-month-old daughter named Lola with Stargate: Atlantis actor Momoa, plus a 20-year-old daughter, Zoe, from her marriage to rocker Lenny Kravitz.

But lest anyone wonder why any parent would choose Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa as their kid’s name, consider that the New York Daily News is reporting onetime Cosby Show starlet Bonet herself now goes by the name Lilakoi Moon.

According to the blog What Would Tyler Durden Do?, Momoa’s mother took to her actor son’s website forum to explain the first middle name of the newborn baby.

“The name was always going to be Nakoa-Wolf,” she writes. “But Jason did the research on first middle name, 2nd middle name as you know is Jason’s.”

Congratulations on little Nakoa-Wolf Manakauapo Namakaeha Momoa, Jason and Lisa…er, Lilakoi!

Since making a comeback on new crime drama Life on Mars, life on earth has been pretty good for Lisa Bonet.

The onetime Cosby Show and A Different World cougar, 41, was snapped on the streets of New York City walking with 28-year-old boyfriend Jason Momoa (of Stargate: Atlantis) and their daughter Lola.

Being a mom, maybe Lisa headed to the newsstand for some reading material?

Or perhaps fellow New Yorker Michelle Williams sent her out as a decoy.
