With the tragic news of Gary Coleman‘s death still fresh in our minds, it is hard to ignore how Gary’s life took a turn that was similar to other doomed child stars.

It’s no secret that Hollywood is a tough place, especially for children. The steady stream of pressures that are put on child celebrities (not to mention the free-flowing drugs and alcohol around Hollywood) are often citied as factors in the disastrous careers and tragic deaths of some young stars.

Katie Holmes performed on last night’s 100th episode of So You Think You Can Dance.

Tom Cruise‘s wife did an pre-recorded tribute to Judy Garland by singing and dancing to the classic song “Get Happy.”

In the performance, which appeared to be lip-synched, Katie danced along with several back-up dancers in a short black number, fedora hat, and fire engine red lipstick. She looked stunning!

The actress and mother of Suri Cruise is set to pay homage to Judy Garland by singing and dancing on tonights’s 100th episode of So You Think You Can Dance.

Katie can’t wait to show off her moves! She tells Entertainment Tonight that she’s “very excited” and “I like to sing and dance so it is really fun.”

The performance was directed by show producer and judge Nigel Lythgoe and is choreographed by Tyce Diorio.

Katie explains that she agreed to appear on the show after becoming involved with Nigel’s Dizzy Feet Foundation, which provides assistance to talented underprivileged youth.

“It is to give scholarships to these young kids,” Katie explains. “I think it is important to experience music and dancing and singing and the arts and sports. This is the next generation. I think it is important to give them every opportunity to grow and discover what it is that they like and to have access to the best.”

We know that Katie loves to give daughter Suri the best, including tons of dance lessons and extravagant gifts!

Despite her best efforts to keep it secret, all sorts of details are leaking out about Katie Holmes‘ upcoming performance on So You Think You Can Dance.

Us Magazine reports that Tom Cruise‘s little missus will be paying tribute to acting legend Judy Garland by singing the song “Get Happy” from Garland’s 1950 musical Summer Stock during her appearance.

A mole reveals that Holmes will be wearing an all-black ensemble—including a fedora, patent leather heels, stockings, and micro-mini skirt—for the number, and will be backed up by an octet of male dancers wearing matching suits and ties.  During the routine—which is being directed by SYTYCD producer/judge Nigel Lythgoe and was choreographed by Tyce Diorio—Holmes “seductively shakes her hips” and caps the performance by tossing her fedora in the air.

Though the air date for the performance is still unknown, it’s suspected that producers will run the segment on July 8—which will mark the 100th episode of the hit series.

Not just yet, despite speculation this morning that the 27-year-old singer and actress had signed on for a remake of A Star Is Born.

The Houston Chronicle spoke with Mindy Peters, wife of Superman producer Jon Peters, at an event last night. The loose-lipped spouse claimed her husband had already signed Mrs. Jay-Z for the part.

Star, originally made in 1954 with Judy Garland then updated with Streisand in 1976, charts the romance of a washed-up rocker and his affair with a promising young singer.

Beyoncé rep Nicole Perez tells Celebuzz, “There is no offer we are aware of at this time.”

No matter.  Bey will keep busy with her “I Am Tour,” trotting out worldwide and featuring Sasha Fierce-caliber costumes and production design from fashion guru Thierry Mugler.

From the looks of the aesthetic Sasha’s already set forth, the show won’t disappoint.
