Emmy Rossum made her Hollywood breakthrough in 2004 as Christine, the ingénue who captures the attention of the disfigured title character in Phantom of the Opera. Nine years later, Rossum is playing Ridley, one of the villainesses in Beautiful Creatures who menaces a young woman (played by Alice Englert).

The transition from would-be victim to antagonist has played out on screen as well as in life for Rossum, who has taken on increasingly mature acting challenges as she’s gotten older.

“I wonder if I looked or seemed as terrified as I actually was when you first met me,” she told Celebuzz, whichpoor  first spoke to Rossum for Opera. “I was not ready for everything that came with that movie, and I was out of my element and had no idea how to handle myself.”

In Beautiful Creatures, Rossum faced not only the prospect of playing a bad guy – or girl – but vamping it up, old-Hollywood style, unlike she’s ever attempted before.

“She kind of channels different old movie stars from Rita Hayworth to Marilyn Monroe,” Rossum explains. “Embracing those different looks was incredibly fun. I loved the challenge of playing this likeable evil villain.”

Although the idea of an “evil villain” somehow being “likeable” might seem counterintuitive – not to mention a tough task for an actor – Rossum says that it’s precisely because of her on- and off-screen evolution that she’s capable of handling the part.

“I guess the roles that I’ve gone after have been more challenging and more adult as I’ve felt able to take on different things,” she says.

Kourtney Kardashian channeled her inner Marilyn Monroe on Thursday — by unintentionally re-enacting her famous upskirt scene from The Seven-Year Itch.

The 33-year-old reality TV star was playing around with her sister Khloe on their balcony when the Miami wind came their way and revealed a bit too much of what was under Kourtney’s yellow skirt.

Luckily, the mother of two had most of her bottom hidden from prying eyes by the thick balcony rails, and it looks like the sisters quickly laughed off the situation.

Earlier in the day, Kardashian was spotted in the same outfit while pushing baby Penelope in her stroller, undisturbed by any billowing breezes.

Kardashian is not the only celeb who has had a Marilyn moment this year.

Over the summer, The Secret Life of the American Teenager star Francia Raisa had trouble keeping her pink dress in place while walking the red carpet at the Teen Choice Awards. The 23-year-old escaped the wardrobe malfunction with little drama as she was wearing a pair of black boy shorts.

Demi Lovato had her own Marilyn moment when she was performing on Good Morning America in New York City’s Central Park.

Sunday, August 5, 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of American beauty, Marilyn Monroe.

Though it’s been over four decades since she has passed, the blonde bombshell has not been forgotten — remaining a cultural icon to this day, whose legend may never die.

In remembrance, Celebuzz takes a look back at the life of one of Hollywood’s most beloved stars.

Born by the name of  Norma Jean Mortenson in 1926, Monroe’s childhood consisted of foster homes and orphanages until she settled down with her first of three husbands, Marine James Doherty, at age 16.

After four years, the couple split and Monroe focused on her flourishing modeling and acting career.

In 1946, she signed her first studio contract and eventually caught the public eye with her nude Playboy shoot.

The starlet really made her big break in 1953 when she starred in the classic film, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes.

Yet, most people remember Monroe for her famous scene in 1955 blockbuster, The Seven Year Itch, in which she donned a white halter dress and posed over an airy subway grate – probably not realizing how many Halloween costumes would follow.

1955 also marked the year that Monroe tried to rebrand herself, leaving behind her bombshell image — but did she?

It’s been 50 years since Marilyn Monroe passed away in 1962, and yet women are still trying to emulate the icon’s style and sex appeal. The Some Like It Hot actress would turn 86 today, June 1, had she not died of a drug overdose at 36, and just within the past two years, we’ve seen several stars take on the role of the blonde beauty.

Michelle Williams was nominated for an Oscar for her portrayal of the actress in My Week With Marilyn, while Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty vie for the role of Marilyn in the hit NBC show Smash. Lindsay Lohan also channeled the sex symbol on her Playboy cover this past year. At this year’s Cannes Film Festival, Marilyn was honored as well.

From her many male suitors (most notably her marriages to baseball player Joe DiMaggio and, later, writer Arthur Miller) to her classic roles in All About Eve, Some Like It Hot and Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, it’s no wonder why her legacy lives on.

Michelle Williams is certainly following in the footsteps of Marilyn Monroe when it comes to Hollywood glamour. The Oscar nominee looked stunning Sunday night at the NYC premiere of her upcoming film My Week With Marilyn wearing a floor-length white gown (complete with cleavage) and sporting her ever-so-popular blonde pixie cut. 

The highly anticipated film (based on a true story) hits theaters Nov. 4, and is said to offer a glimpse into both the public and tragic private persona of Monroe (Williams), all wrapped around a week-long love affair of sorts with a young man (Eddie Redmayne).

Kenneth Branagh, Judi Dench and Harry Potter beauty Emma Watson are among the many supporting players.

In anticipation of the movie, Michelle did a photoshoot for Vogue magazine. Check out those pics below.

In the November issue of UK’s Vogue, RiRi ditched her usual red hair color for a sexy blonde bob wig. Meanwhile, in the U.S. October issue of the magazine, Michelle also looked like a blonde bombshell.

According to IMDB, the plot centers around, “Colin Clark, an employee of Sir Laurence Olivier’s, documents the tense interaction between Olivier and Marilyn Monroe during production of The Prince and the Showgirl.”

However, RiRi may have the sassiness that Marilyn is known for. She told Vogue UK: 

“See, people, they want me to be a role model just because of the life I lead. The things I say in my songs, they expect it of me and [being a role model] became more of my job than I wanted it to be. But no, I just want to make music. That’s it. Look, God doesn’t give any more than you can handle. I had to get through a lot of ups and downs – big downs – and a lot of trial and error to get where I am now.”

Christina Hendricks has one of the best bodies in Hollywood, so consequently that makes it one of the most talked about, too. Hendricks sidestepped questions about her figure at the Emmys, from the carpet (where a reporter inappropriately tried to ask a “spanx” question) to the press room.

Mad Men creator Matthew Weiner told the LA Times says that perhaps he had a hand in the people’s obsession with her curves.

“I’m kind of responsible — her physique was something that hadn’t been on TV in a long time,” Weiner said.

“She’s a sex symbol, and we’re at a point in time where it’s OK for people to say anything to anybody when you’re a public figure.”

Matthew went on to compare Hendricks to other iconic figures, and brought up that there is a difference in the media when it comes to men and women:

“Marilyn Monroe, Angelina Jolie, their physique is something that becomes a part of the culture…. I can’t make any jokes about it; I understand that it’s hard for [Christina]. But does anyone talk to Jon Hamm and say, ‘Lift your shirt up and show us your abs?’”

We so wish they would!

Michelle Williams is getting her Marilyn Monroe on, y’all.

The former Dawson’s Creek actress is playing the iconic blonde in the upcoming biopic My Week With Marilyn, and The Weinstein Company released the first image of Williams as the ill-fated acting legend today.

The film, which began principal photography in London on Friday and co-stars Harry Potter star Emma Watson, chronicles a week in the life of Monroe as she abandons the Hollywood lifestyle in order to embrace British life with film producer and writer Colin Clark, played by The Other Boleyn Girl actor Eddie Redmayne in the film. (The script is based on Clark’s diaries.)

Marie Claire reports the Harry Potter actress is trading in her wand for pins and measuring tape to star as a wardrobe assistant alongside Michelle Williams, Dominic Cooper and Judi Dench, 

The film, based on a book by Colin Clark, follows Clark’s career as he worked with fashion, beauty and film icon Marilyn Monroe.

Aside from getting hands-on fashion experience, Watson will have a little on-screen romance as Colin’s girlfriend. Shooting is expected to begin in October.

Busy Watson will have to juggle her classes at Brown University and working the premiere of the 8th Harry Potter movie set to debut in November.

Naomi will be starring in the adaptation of Joyce Carol Oates‘ imaginary memoir of Marilyn, Blonde.

Meanwhile, Michelle will be portraying the legendary blonde bombshell in My Week with Marilyn, a film about the making of The Prince and the Showgirl.

Both actresses are known for both their beauty and incredible acting talent, so watching both of them on screen is sure to be great.

The good news: Lindsay Lohan has finally found some work again.

The bad news: She had to pretend to be somebody else to do it.

The romantically troubled tabloid fave was spotted in the Hollywood Hills doing a photo-shoot for the Spanish edition of Vogue on Wednesday. The blonde wig on her head suggests that the theme of the shoot may have been Marilyn Monroe.

It would be far from the first time that Lohan has been inspired by the iconic, and tragic, actress. Aside from naming her leggings line, 6126, after Monroe’s birthday, LiLo also re-created Monroe’s last nude photo-shoot for New York magazine last year.

The original nude photo-shoot occurred slightly before Monroe died at the age of 36 from acute barbiturate poisoning. Hopefully infamous party girl and rehab vet Lohan doesn’t end up taking her emulation too far.
