Was Mel Gibson’s low-key appearance at Sunday night’s Golden Globe Awards a sign that America may be ready forgive him?

It’s possible, says Nashville star Hayden Panettiere.

“I think forgiving is the best quality because America loves comebacks and they love flaws and for people to admit their mistakes and to grow from them,” Panettiere told Celebuzz while discussing Jodie Foster’s emotional Cecil B. DeMille speech. “We all do. They can be big, they can be small.”

“The unfortunate thing about being in the public eye is you get much less breaks because everything is so magnified,” she added.

“It’s not like we make any mistakes that other people don’t. It’s just that they’re so public and so explosive and so judgmental too to everything that somebodies created in their career. But I think forgiveness is one of the best qualities that America has.”

Gibson — who sat at Foster’s table at the event and was personally thanked by her in her speech — suffered a career nose dive in 2006 when he was arrested for a DUI and accused of making anti-Semitic marks at the time of his arrest.

A few years later, in 2010 phone calls were leaked to the Internet in which Gibson was heard yelling a number of offensive remarks at his then-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva.

But based on the look on his face during Foster’s speech, it seemed like he was ready to be forgiven.

Panettiere agreed.

“The worst punishment is having to live with what you’re done; to live with it yourself,” Panettiere — who was nominated Sunday night for Nashville – said.

“We have that saying — ‘You lay in the bed you made’ — and that’s the worst punishment. To continually punish, it’s just unnecessary and I think you can see in people when they’re ready to be forgiven and they know and understand what they’ve done.

“People do silly things and people do rash thing that they don’t mean.

“We all say things that we don’t mean and crazy things. It happens to all of us and it doesn’t mean that one person is better than another.”

Panettiere said ”forgiveness is always the best route.”

“You always give somebody a second chance. If they go beyond that that’s something you, that’s your choice. A second chance is a great thing. Forgiveness and understand and benefit of the doubt. Benefit of the doubt is something that I don’t feel like people give as freely and they should.”

From Nicole Kidman and husband Keith Urban to a mini Grease reunion between Olivia Newton John and John Travolta, there was plenty of star action at the 10th Annual G’Day USA Gala, held at the JW Marriot in Los Angeles, Calif.

Hugh Jackman, Naomi Watts, Rose Byrne and Mel Gibson were also on hand for the black tie event, which honored legendary actor Paul Hogan.

On the red carpet, Kidman and Urban gushed about their romance and their little girls Sunday Rose and Faith Margaret.

“As we kissed our daughters goodbye when we headed out tonight we kind of went, ‘Wow, it’s amazing how life plays out,’” the Paperboy actress told the Australian Associated Press [via The Sydney Morning Herald].

“Look what happened from that chance meeting. We now have a 2-year-old and a 4-year-old who are waving us bye.”

Kidman is up for a Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture on Sunday, against Amy Adams, Sally Field, Anne Hathaway and Helen Hunt.

Mel Gibson has piled a further $1 million into his controversial church in Malibu, Calif., Celebuzz has exclusively learned.

A federal tax filing we’ve obtained reveals that the oft-troubled actor-director made the large lump sum donation last year to his 400-seat Holy Family Catholic Church, which is situated in the secluded hills on the scenic and quiet Mulholland Highway.

The private church now has $68 million in its tax free coffers — up from $27 million in 2006, according to the document.

Gibson, 57, donated $1,057,593 last year. He was the sole contributor to the church, though the donation he made in 2011 was significantly down on previous years.

Why?

In the now infamous recorded tapes released in 2010, Gibson confessed he’d fallen on hard times.

He ranted to his ex-lover, Oksana Grigorieva, that he didn’t have “any f**king money,” despite the millions he’d made in Hollywood.

“I have to support you and everybody else! I have to sell paintings. I have to sell my box at the Lakers game,” he was caught on tape saying.

The everybody else to which the Lethal Weapon star referred was likely his wife of 26 years, Robyn Moore, who officially divorced him on Dec. 23, 2011 after splitting years earlier.

Moore, the mother of seven of Gibson’s children, walked away with half of his estimated $800 million fortune because the pair had no prenup.

Still, Gibson’s church has proved to be a war chest of sorts.

Gibson is listed in federal tax records as the CEO of the church and it is run out of Gibson’s Icon Production company offices in the beachside suburb of Santa Monica.

He lists just three major expenses for 2011, totaling all up $273,218 — including almost $40,000 in legal fees.

One of the church’s major assets is listed as being $416,375 in artwork.

Gibson’s secretive sect is not recognized by the Roman Catholic Church because it does not acknowledge the authority of the Pope or the Vatican.

The exclusive parish keeps its address a secret and its 17 acres are guarded by security personnel.

Their love might have ended on Revenge, but in real-life, costars Emily VanCamp and Josh Bowman are growing from strength to strength.

The pair attended the Mending Kids International’s ‘Four Kings & An Ace’ Celebrity Poker Tournament at The London Hotel on Saturday night in West Hollywood, Calif. and shared an intimate moment in front of a cavalcade of Tineltown stars, an onlooker tells Celebuzz.

“At one point during the night, Emily and Josh were gazing into each others’ eyes over popcorn,” said the partygoer.

“Emily looked stunning in a nude and black cocktail dress while Josh complimented her outfit with a chic suit and tie.

“After exchanging a few glances and laughing together, Emily and Josh headed to one of the VIP rooms where the celebrity poker tournament was underway.”

The couple took up seats next to their Revenge co-star Nick Wechsler, who plays Jack Porter on the hit ABC series.

Added the insider: “They spent most of the rest of their night in the poker room, hanging out and chatting amongst the three of them.”

VanCamp’s season two love interest Barry Sloane, who plays Aiden Mathis, the mysterious man from Emily’s past, was also in attendance.

“Mathis was gambling for a good cause with his costar Ashley Madekwe at the Blackjack table,” added the partygoer.

Others taking part in the high-stakes poker tournament in the private rooms in the back of the venue (player tickets were $10,000/per person) included event co-hosts Robert Downey Jr., Jodie Foster, Sean Penn and Gene Simmons.

Other notables on-hand for the party included Mel Gibson, Camille Grammer, Patricia Arquette and American Idol winner Lee Dewyze.

Danny DeVito and Rhea Perlman announced Monday they have ended their 30-year marriage. The couple’s rep Stan Rosenfield confirmed the news to ET.

The 67-year-old actor and 64-year-old actress married in 1982 after meeting on the set of the smash hit, Taxi.

The actors have three children together – Jacob, 24, Grace, 27, and Lucy, 29. The duo also have a production company, Jersey Films, which has produced such hits as Pulp Fiction, Garden State, Erin Brockovich and Freedom Writers.

Meanwhile, political power couple Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver, announced that they’d be ending their 25-year marriage in July 2011. The news came two months after reports surfaced that Schwarzenegger, 65, fathered a child with a former household maid.

Shriver, 56, was spotted wearing her wedding ring while running errands in Brentwood on Oct. 6.

Mel Gibson is moving on — quite literally, in the case of his Malibu mansion.

The Oscar-winning director director finally sold the property he owned with his now ex-wife, Robyn Moore Gibson, according to the Los Angeles Times.

The lucky buyer: reality TV producer Mike Fleiss (the Bachelor franchise), who snagged the property for $9.3 million, down 35 percent from its original listing in March 2010 ($14.5 million).

So, what does Fleiss get for the mark down?

Among the many amenities: six bedrooms; five and a half baths; three guesthouses; a lighted tennis court; and a spa.

The Gibsons purchased the home from singer Rick Springfield in 1989 for around $3 million, according to the report.

Now that Katie Holmes has filed for divorce from Tom Cruise, the question has turned to cash: namely, just how much money will the Dawson’s Creek star collect?

The Los Angeles judge who negotiated peace between Mel Gibson and ex-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva could drag the Oscar-winning actor/director back to court to revise custody of their two-year-old daughter, Lucia, in the wake of his latest alleged death threats.

Whilst judge Peter D. Lichtman declared an end to the pair’s custody battle on August 31, last year, with a statement that he had provided “complete closure of this matter,” the Superior Court court still has “ongoing supervision of the case to see that its ruling is followed precisely,” a source told Celebuzz.

The insider told Celebuzz: “If, as it appears in this case, there has been some kind of breach of the courts rulings, it’s possible for further judicial review.”

“This is even more complicated because GIbson is on three years probation for criminal charges,” the source, who spoke to Celebuzz on the condition of anonymity, said.

“Any violation of his probation could earn him another day in court.”

According to Hollywood screenwriter Joe Eszterhas, Gibson told him that he wanted to stab Russian-born Grigorieva while having sex with her. Eszterhas claimed in a letter leaked online that Gibson, 56, explicitly said, “‘I’m going to kill her! I’m going to have her killed!’”

While Gibson has not specifically addressed the Grigorieva allegations, he’s labelled Eszterhas’s observations as “utter fabrications.”

Here are a few excerpts of Eszterhas letter to Gibson, first obtained by TheWrap.com — and we warn some language may be offensive:

“You were raving at Oksana even after you’d reached a custody agreement over Luci… And then you were even more explicit about your threat: ‘I’m going to kill her! I’m going to have her killed!’ You said you’d become friends with two FBI agents (or former FBI agents) and they were going to help you kill her.”

“You kept raging about your ex-girlfriend, Oksana Grigorieva, Luci’s mother, whom you always referred to as ‘that c***’ and ‘that f***ing b****.’ You acted out for me the scene where you hit her. But you said you’d ‘just slapped her a little bit.’ After you slapped her, you said, she grabbed Luci and went running ‘hysterically’ down the hillside behind your house in the pitch dark.”

“’I want that c*** gone!’ you screamed. ‘Gone! Gone! Gone! I will not share Luci with her!’ And: ‘I’m going to get rid of her. No one will ever know! I’m not going to live this way the rest of my life! She’s poisoning Luci against me! She is evil! They worship the devil where she came from. She’s going to disappear! Gone!’”

Under Gibson and Grigorieva’s fragile agreement, the pair has been sharing custody of Lucia on an equal basis. Grigorieva also received $750,000 to be spread over three payments.

In March 2011, the Lethal Weapon star pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor charge of beating Grigorieva and was sentenced to 36 months probation, as well as domestic violence and mental health counseling.

Over the past few years, a slew of big-name celebrities have caught in the act as they’ve shown the less-than pleasant side to their well-known public persona. Such is the case with the leaked audio recording between Chevy Chase and the creator of his TV show, Community.

With the media and public’s constant watch, celebrities often have to watch what they say. But not everyone can escape the occasional gaffe.

In the November issue of Vanity Fair, Johnny Depp revealed his extreme disdain for photo shoots, and even went as far to compare it to violent sexual assault.

“Well, you just feel like you’re being raped somehow. Raped…It feels like a kind of weird–just weird,” the Rum Diary actor said. “But whenever you have a photo shoot or something like that, it’s like–you just feel dumb.”

Depp’s quote didn’t fare well in the public spotlight. The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) vehemently disagreed with the statement, which Depp quickly responded to with a sincere apology on Tuesday, saying: 

“I am truly sorry for offending anyone in any way. I never meant to. It was a poor choice of words on my part in an effort to explain a feeling,” the actor remarked. “I understand there is no comparison, and I am very regretful.  In an effort to correct my lack of judgment, please accept my heartfelt apology.”

The Pirates of the Caribbean star isn’t the only celebrity under heat for controversial statements. Brad Pitt‘s comments about his former marriage to Jennifer Aniston during a Parade interview caused the Moneyball star to think twice about his statements.

“All I know is that my point was, the best thing I’d done as a father is be sure that my kids have a good mother….That’s all I was, or am, trying to say, ” he told Matt Lauer. “It has no reference to the past. And I think it’s a shame that I can’t say something nice about Angie without Jen being drug in. You know, she doesn’t deserve it.”

Brad’s comments got us thinking about John Mayer‘s infamous 2010 commentary about ex-girlfriend, Jessica Simpson. “That girl, for me, is a drug, “said the 33-year-old singer. “And drugs aren’t good for you if you do lots of them. Yeah, that girl is like crack cocaine to me…Sexually it was crazy. That’s all I’ll say. It was like napalm, sexual napalm…”

Then, late last week, country crooner, Hank Williams Jr.’s comparison of Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler during a Fox & Friends interview caused jaws to drop across the nation. ESPN pulled his theme song from its Monday Night Football opening, and Williams issued an apologetic reply afterward.

The latest film to debut at the festival is the Mel Gibson and Jodie Foster‘s drama, The Beaver. The film, Mel’s first since his infamous rants from last summer, is about a depressed father and husband who uses the aid of a stuffed animal beaver to deal with his issues.

Those two weren’t the only stars at the event.

Mel Gibson reported to the police last night after pleading no contest to battery and posed for a mug shot as required, and his serious demeanor is a clear indication of his mood.

In the mug shot taken at the El Segundo Police Department, an expressionless Gibson looks directly into the lens — a far cry from his previous DUI mug shot, where he was grinning as the police cameraman snapped away.

Mel must serve 16 hours of community service and a year of counseling stemming from his alleged battery of then-girlfriend Oksana Grigorieva.

In non-legal Gibson news, his long-delayed film The Beaver debuted at SXSW this week, and surprisingly the buzz on the street is that it’s quite good — and that Gibson’s off-screen antics don’t mar the overall vibe of the movie. Check out the film’s trailer:

Lady Gaga certainly made an impression this year. Whether it’s a good or band impression is probably in the eye of the beholder.

The “Alejandro” singer and off-kilter fashion plate has landed the questionable honor of being Showbiz Tonight‘s Most Provocative Celebrity for 2010, beating out such other famous eyebrow-raisers as Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan, Mel Gibson and Charlie Sheen. (And considering the year that Sheen and Gibson have had, this is no small feat indeed.)

Reflecting on the achievement, CNN notes,

“Even without her massive record sales and recent Grammy nominations, Lady Gaga was a force this year. She constantly made headlines with her too-wild-to-imagine antics (flipping off photographers at a New York Mets baseball game in June; wearing a dress made out of meat to the MTV Video Music Awards in September). So who exactly is this 20-year-old actress named Jennifer Lawrence who’s already swiping up accolades for the lead role in the independent film Winter’s Bone?

She’s a young lady with just a few major actings jobs to her credit, who broke through as a main cast member on The Bill Engvall Show at age 16. In 2008, she debuted on the big screen for Guillermo Arriaga‘s The Burning Plain alongside Oscar winners Kim Basinger and Charlize Theron. That gig earned her the Marcello Mastroianni Award for best emerging actor or actress.

Lawrence also auditioned to be either Bella Swan or Rosalie Hale for The Twilight Saga, but she wasn’t selected. Mel Gibson‘s The Beaver presently resides on the shelf, but she’s in that too as the girlfriend of Mel’s son (played by Anton Yelchin). Audiences will get to see her shapeshift as the villain Mystique when Fox’s reboot of their mutant series, X-Men: First Class, hits theaters on June 3, 2011.

But currently, the fuss is all about Winter’s Bone, a grim tale of a girl (played by Lawrence) who must locate her drug-dealing father in order to hold her family together.

For the first time, Oksana Grigorieva is speaking publicly about the alleged domestic violence she encountered during her relationship with Mel Gibson.

In the interview with Larry King, Oksana opened up about her tumultuous relationship with Gibson that became very public after leaked audiotapes of their fights surfaced earlier this year. During the interview, Grigorieva says that during one major blowout on January 6:

“The beating took place. Mel actually assaulted me while I was holding the baby in my arms … I ran into my son’s bedroom and told him, ‘Mel’s crazy.’”

Grigorieva says their constant fighting and a fear for her safety caused her to begin recording their conversations.

“I started taping it around 11 o’clock because I thought, ‘I’m actually not going to live through the night. I’m actually not going to live through the night and I wanted my mother to be able to prove that if I’m dead that this is who did it.’”

When asked by King why she stayed with Gibson after his alleged abusive incidents, Oksana says that she stayed “too long,” and that at one point Mel “cried on his knees” and begged for her to stay with him.

In the latest development in the ongoing legal woes between Passion of the Christ honcho Mel Gibson and his estranged baby mama, Oksana Grigorieva, TMZ reports that Gibson has admitted to slapping Grigorieva—but denies punching her, as Grigorieva alleges.

In a sworn declaration given on June 23, Gibson recounts his version of the couple’s January 6, 2010, argument, during which Grigorieva has claimed that the actor punched her in the mouth, knocking out two of her teeth. Gibson paints a lighter, but still violent, portrait of events. In the declaration, Gibson claims that the two were engaging in one of their frequent arguments at Gibson’s Malibu home when a “hysterical” Grigorieva, holding their then-two-month-old daughter Lucia in her hands, began making “rapid movements [that] were causing Lucia’s little body to be flung from one side to the other, her head shaking violently.”

Claiming that he feared that Lucia would suffer from Shaken Baby Syndrome, Gibson says that, after Grigorieva refused to cease her “rough and erratic movements,” 

“I slapped Oksana one time with an open hand in an attempt to bring her back to reality. I did not slap her hard, I was just trying to shock her so that she would stop screaming, continuing shaking Lucia back and forth…I did not hit Oksana with a closed fist, as she alleges. I did not ever punch her in the face or in the temple or anywhere else, not then or at any other time.”

In the declaration, Gibson does, however, concede that “I do not believe I handled the situation as well as I should have.”

Grigorieva filed a domestic-violence complaint over the incident, sparking an investigation in July. (The case has since bee turned over to prosecutors.) The couple is currently locked in a custody battle over Lucia.

Mel Gibson might be persona non grata on the set of The Hangover 2, but he’s welcome with open arms in The Beaver. They even let him bring a friend along!

Robert Downey Jr. publicly chided his Due Date co-star Zach Galifianakis this week over his role in kicking Mel Gibson out of The Hangover 2 during an introduction for the duo’s film at a Cinema Society screening in New York.

“Do you want to make any other big mistakes?” Downey asked Zach from the stage. “Cost more people their jobs?”

Galifianakis reportedly exited the stage speechless, but only after glaring at the Iron Man star and snatching his popcorn.

As previously reported, the cast of The Hangover 2 (which includes almost all the people from the first film) vetoed director Todd Philips’ decision to cast Mel Gibson in a cameo spot as a Bangkok tattoo artist. Iron Mike Tyson was allowed to rehabilitate his career with a cameo in the first film, and as such, he was down with Mel having the part.

On the podcast Comedy Death-Ray, Galifianakis issued a remark in mid-October many believed referred to Mel Gibson’s exclusion: “I’m in a deep protest right now with a movie I’m working on, up in arms about something. But I can’t get the guys to [listen] … I’m not making any leeway.”

Let the record show: If you steal Mike Tyson‘s tiger, as the boys of The Hangover did, there will be problems — but if you find yourself on the bad side of public opinion, as Mel Gibson has, fear not.

Tyson told the NY Post Wednesday that he didn’t agree with his castmates — Zach Galifianakis, Bradley Cooper, Justin Bartha, and Ed Helms — on dumping Mel’s cameo as a Bangkok tattoo artist in Hangover 2, and that he ’100 percent’ wanted to work with the troubled Oscar winner.  

“I’m not going to ever in my life point my finger at anyone. I don’t live in a glass house. None of us do. I work with anybody, as long as they’re respectful,” the retired boxer said.

Tyson is no stranger to comebacks himself. Once known as the “baddest alive,” Tyson spent three years in jail after being convicted of rape in 1992, but eventually returned to boxing and won back a portion of his heavyweight title. 

“We all have that guy — a Mel Gibson — in us,” Tyson said. “We just don’t want people to be exposed to it. Maybe he needs to go get help. We all need help, and need someone to talk to. I’m not against him, but I’m not for him.”
