Some things are simply out of reach of the long arm of the law.

The embattled Australian radio hosts who pranked the hospital treating pregnant Kate Middleton just days before the nurse who answered the hoax call, Jacintha Saldanha, committed suicide will not face criminal charges, Britain’s Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) officials announced on Friday.

“Having carefully reviewed the evidence currently available we have concluded that there is no evidence to support a charge of manslaughter,” said Malcolm McHaffie, Deputy Head of Special Crime at CPS, according to The Guardian. “Although there is some evidence to warrant further investigation of [other] offenses, no further investigation is required because any potential prosecution would not be in the public interest.”

For over a month, British prosecutors have been deciding whether to bring charges against 2Day FM radio hosts Michael Christian and Mel Greig in connection the suicide of Jacintha Saldanha, 46, one of the nurses on hand at King Edward VII Hospital while Prince William‘s expectant wife was was being treated for acute morning sickness in early December.

Saldanha transferred the call from the DJs pretending to be Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Charles to the ward where the Duchess of Cambridge was receiving treatment. Another nurse gave them details of her condition. Just three days later, on Dec. 7, Indian-born Saldanha, 46, a mother-of-two, was found hanged in her hospital lodgings in London.

In a series of apparent suicide notes, the late nurse reportedly accused Greig and Christian for her taking her own life, according to the U.K.’s Daily Mail. Saldanha also took aim at the senior management at London’s King Edward VII hospital for their actions during the aftermath of the hoax, refuting initial statements that the staff had been supportive throughout the controversy.

After coming under fire following Saldanha’s death, the DJs remain on leave from 2Day FM, where their “Hot 30″ program — on which they hosted the hoax — has been formerly canceled. As they were widely condemned in the weeks following the controversy, Greig and Christian admitted they were “shattered, gutted (and) heartbroken” during a televised interview with the Nine Network in Australia. “There’s not a minute that goes by where we don’t think about her family and what they must be going through,” Greig said on the program A Current Affair. “The thought we may have played a part in that is gut-wrenching.”

Just last week, prosecutors in London, England, were deciding whether to bring charges against 2Day FM radio hosts Michael Christian and Mel Greig, who duped Saldanha into transferring their Dec. 4 call to Kate Middleton‘s ward at King Edward VII Hospital, where the Duchess of Cambridge was being treated for acute morning sickness.

“Following the death of Jacintha Saldanha, officers have liaised with the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) as to whether any criminal offenses had been committed,” a spokesman for Scotland Yard, headquarters of the Metropolitan Police Service, said on Saturday.

But the DJs have not been drilled for further information or asked for an interview. Now it looks like they are not likely to head to court over their hoax. “There was some initial contact after the death of (nurse) Jacintha Saldanha but not a lot,” New South Wales Deputy Police Commissioner Nick Kaldas said. “[With] the passage of time, we believe it is unlikely any charges will be laid.”

“Following the death of Jacintha Saldanha, officers have liaised with the CPS (Crown Prosecution Service) as to whether any criminal offences had been committed in relation to the hoax call made to King Edward VII Hospital in the early hours of Tuesday December 4,” a spokesman for Scotland Yard, headquarters of the Metropolitan Police Service,  said on Saturday.

“On Wednesday December 19, officers submitted a file to the CPS for them to consider whether any potential offences may have been committed by making the hoax call.”

Jacintha Saldanha, 46, transferred the call from the DJs pretending to be the Queen and Prince Charles to the ward where the Duchess was being treated. Another nurse gave them details of her condition.

Ms Saldanha, a mother-of-two, was found hanged in nurses accommodation just three days later on December 7.

In a series of apparent suicide notes, Saldanha expressed her anger toward the  2Day FM radio hosts, according to the Daily Mail.

She also lambasted the senior management at the hospital for their actions during the aftermath of the hoax, refuting initial statements that the staff had been supportive throughout the controversy.

“Within the letter, Jacintha calls into question some of the treatment she received at the hospital,” the Mirror reported.

Mr Barboza and the couple’s two children, Lisha, 14, and Junal, 16, have said that her death has left them “shattered” and her loss has left an “unfillable void”.

In their first interview since the scandal, Christian and Greig admitted they were left “shattered, gutted (and) heartbroken” over the tragic end to their hoax.

“There’s not a minute that goes by where we don’t think about her family and what they must be going through and the thought we may have played a part in that is gut-wrenching,” Greig said.

In a television interview with the Nine Network in Australia, 2Day FM radio hosts Michael Christian and Mel Greig admitted they are “shattered, gutted (and) heartbroken” over the tragic end to their hoax.

“There’s not a minute that goes by where we don’t think about her family and what they must be going through and the thought we may have played a part in that is gut-wrenching,” Greig told the program A Current Affair.

The pair wept at times during the interview — their first public appearance since Saldanha’s death was confirmed by King Edward VII Hospital — revealing the “simple harmless phone call” had been the joint idea of their production team.

Christian added, “It was just the team sitting down before the show… (we) just had the idea for just a simple harmless phone call. That we thought about making a call it was going to go for 30 seconds we were going to be hung up on and that was it. As innocent as that.”

Greig added: “We thought a hundred people before us would’ve tried it, we thought it was such a silly idea and the accents were terrible and not for a second did we expect to speak to Kate let alone have a conversation with anyone at the hospital. We wanted to be hung up on.”

The young DJ described learning the news that Saldanha had died. She said it was “the worst phone call I’ve ever had in my life.”

Breaking down in tears, Greig added: “These prank calls are made every day, on every radio station, in every country around the world and they have been for a long time and no-one could’ve imagined this to happen.”

The television network said it did not pay the DJs for the interview.

At the weekend, the chairman of King Edward VII’s Hospital, where Kate Middleton was being treated for severe morning sickness earlier this week, penned a letter to the radio station, condemning the prank call.

“I am writing to protest in the strongest possible terms about the hoax call made from your radio station, 2DayFM, to this hospital last Tuesday,” Lord Glenarthur wrote in a letter addressed to Max Moore-Wilton, chairman of the station’s parent company Southern Cross Austereo.

The DJs were taken off the air and have reportedly been offered counseling in the wake of the nurse’s death.
