Not only was Olympian Michael Phelps seen sporting an awesome 80s handlebar mustache (a la Hulk Hogan) in Miami earlier this week, but our beloved Bradley Cooper was also showing off his new facial hair look at the Golden Globes.

]]> Olympic gold medalist Michael Phelps looks to have escaped harms way when he was involved in a car crash last night in his hometown of Baltimore, MD.

A police spokesman says the swimmer was driving a Cadillac Escalade, which collided with a Honda accord. It is unclear who is at fault in the accident, but some reports are claiming that Phelps ran the red light, causing the crash.

Cops also said that after interviewing Phelps after the accident, they determined that a field sobriety test was not necessary. “There was no need,” said chief department spokesman Anthony Guglielmi. “He was completely coherent. He was cooperating with police. He gave a witness statement as to what occurred.”

Phelps had two passengers in his car, who were uninjured. The female driver of the second car was taken to the hospital as a precaution.

As of now, no citations have been issued and the accident is still under investigation.

After Carrie’s grandmother told the media that the controversial blonde was dating the Olympic swimmer, Phelps spoke out publicly denying the claims. ”I’m not dating anybody. I’m single. My private life stays private.”

Now, photos have surfaced on The Dirty showing the Miss USA runner-up partying in a bikini with the swimmer. One photo even shows Phelps showing off his firm booty in a speedo, as Carrie poses next to him, mouth wide open.

“I’m not dating anybody,” the Olympic swimming champ asserts. “I’m single. My private life stays private.”

Phelps adds that he’s not going to take sides on her statements about gay marriage, either.

“That’s the cool thing about America—everybody has their opinion,” Phelps notes. “I’m not saying I support her. I’m not saying I don’t support her.”

He’s an Olympic swimming champ whose record was tarnished by his choice of recreational activities. She’s a beauty-pageant contestant whose faith-based opinions on current events have kept her in the headlines even after her defeat.

Radar Online reports that human dolphin Michael Phelps and Miss USA runner-up Carrie Prejean have sparked up a relationship.

“Carrie and Michael have been out to baseball games and lunch,” confirms Prejean’s grandmother, Jeanette Coppolla. “He always calls her when he is in town and they go out.”

And despite San Diego native Prejean’s Bible-clutching ways, she’s willing to turn the other cheek when it comes to Phelps’ reputation for catting around.

“Carrie knows that he has dated a lot of girls but she enjoys going out with him and isn’t serious about being in a relationship with him,” Coppola adds. “He’s a nice guy and she likes him.”

Competing as Miss California, Prejean raised eyebrows during Sunday’s Miss USA competition, after being asked whether gay marriage should be legalized. “In my country, and in my family, I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman,” Prejean replied.

Later in the week, Prejean defended her statement, calling it “biblically correct” while talking to Matt Lauer on the Today show.

Wow, good thing the Bible doesn’t take a stance on getting totally zooted on killer bong hits.

Star Magazine reports that Debbie Phelps, mother of recently troubled Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps, has written a warts-and-all book about her relationship with her son, entitled A Mother For All Seasons.

In the unflinching tome, Ma Phelps doesn’t shy away from the less glorious moments of her maternal reign. Such as earlier this year, when photos of her son holding a water pipe to his lips during a party at the University of South Carolina emerged in the media. (Celebrity historians would come to refer to the event as BongGate.)

Debbie was “not happy” about her son’s “disappointing, uncharacteristic behavior,” she writes.

Nonetheless, she says, it “déjà vu all over again”—a reference to Phelps’ 2004 DUI arrest which, she says, was her first major disappointment in her son.

“Nothing like this had ever happened with him,” Phelps says of the earlier incident. “It was unreal—like something out of a horror movie—with TV clips of jail cell doors slamming ominously shut, dooming the life and career of one golden boy turned loser.”

Phelps largely holds herself accountable for her scion’s slip-up. “I was sure that I could have done something to better prepare Michael to make better choices,” the book reads. “He actually had tried to get someone else to drive after he had a few drinks. Apparently someone in the crowd made a crack about not giving the keys to his brand-new Range Rover to someone else.”

The incident and its ensuing publicity prompted the elder Phelps to take a week off from work. “I stayed out of sight, hibernating at a friend’s house, crying my eyes out,” she recalls.

Boxing legend Muhammad Ali was the guest of honor at Celebrity Fight Night XV, held at the JW Marriott Desert Ridge Resort & Spa in Phoenix, Arizona, on Saturday.

The annual Fight Night has raised $52 million for various charities throughout its 15-year run, with the primary beneficiary being the Muhammad Ali Parkinson Center. This year’s event, hosted by country songbird Reba McEntire, featured musical performances by Jon Bon Jovi, Charise and Ray Firestone, among others.

Honorees included Last King of Scotland actor Forest Whitaker, Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kurt Warner and Olympic swimming sensation Michael Phelps, whose athletic prowess and charitable spirit have been overshadowed by a cloud of controversy lately.

Nice to see that Phelps is finding other things to hit besides the bong these days.

“I knew that I’d made a mistake and a bad judgment,” Phelps tells Matt Lauer in an interview that aired on the Today show this morning, and that will also be seen on Sunday’s Dateline on NBC.

Phelps was photographed using a bong to reportedly smoke marijuana at a University of South Carolina in November.

The 14-time gold medalist says that he knew about the photos before they went to press, after someone e-mailed him, as reported by Us.

And I had no idea really what to do. You know, I knew that I’d made a mistake and made a bad judgment,” he says. “And it was an awful judgment. The people I hurt, you know, is my family, clearly. My friends. The close people around me. And most importantly, the fans. And– and, you know, I realize that that hurt a lot of people,” he says.

Phelps lost endorsement deals with Kellogs, and was suspended from swimming for three months.

“It’s not about money to me. So, you know, the contract side of things, yeah, I was disappointed,” he says. “But, you know, I think the biggest thing is who I hurt the most. Like, if I lost money, okay. It’s not an issue with me.”

Phelps went into details about the party, saying that it was a small gathering and there were only two or three individuals present that he didn’t know.

The swimmer was cagey about his actual drug use, admitting his misstep but not actually acknowledging that he was smoking marijuana.

“It was a bad mistake. I mean, we all know, you know, what you and I are talking about. It’s a stupid mistake,” he said. “You know, bad judgment. And it’s something that, you know, I have to, and I want to teach other people not to make that mistake.”

And what has he ultimately learned from all of this, besides refraining from open drug use when you’re a public figure?

“It’s funny at times…take a picture with a cell phone,” he says. “I’ll say that there are a lot of people out there who want to take advantage of any situation they have. I trusted my friends who were there about who they were. And clearly they weren’t trusted people…Sometimes you learn the hard way.”

Richland County Sheriff Leon Lott announced today that he’s chosen not to pursue charges against Phelps in relation to a photo of the Olympic swimmer smoking from a bong last November, the State reports.

Lott had earlier said that he might charge Phelps if it could be proven  that he had been smoking marijuana in the photo.

However, Lott held a press conference at 3 p.m. Eastern time today at the Sheriff’s Department headquarters.

While announcing that he wouldn’t pursue charges, Lott nonetheless defended his decision to pursue the possibility.

“Michael Phelps is truly an American hero…but even with his star status, he is still obligated to obey the laws of our state,” Lott announced. “By ignoring the November incident, I would have been sending a message of tolerance and condoning the use of illegal drugs. I could not do that, nor have I ever done that.”

Lott concluded that the incident hadn’t yielded sufficient evidence to charge Phelps. Unfortunately, others connected to the photo aren’t faring as well as Phelps; last week investigators arrested eight people, including the owner of the bong, on drug charges.

Phelps, who won a record eight gold medals at the Summer Olympics in Beijing last years, was photographed supposedly smoking from a bong at a house party in Columbia, South Carolina, last November. An uproar ensued after British newspaper News of the World published the photo at the beginning of February.

Phelps has also been suspended by USA Swimming for three months.

TMZ reports that the organization is also withholding financial support for the athlete.

A photo depicting Phelps, who returned to practice this week, smoking from a bong was publicized last weekend by News of the World.

Kellogg Co. has stated that the athlete is “not consistent with the image of Kellogg.”

Phelps’ other endorsements with Visa, Speedo, and watchmaker Omega seem to be in intact.

“This is not a situation where any anti-doping rule was violated, but we decided to send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero,” USA Swimming said in a statement.

Phelps recently told the press that he is considering dropping out of the 2012 Summer Olympics in London due to the recent scandal.

“This is a decision of mine that I’m not going to make today and I’m not going to make tomorrow,” Phelps stated. “It’s going to require a lot of time and energy and a lot of thinking for myself – but also talking to [coach] Bob [Bowman]  and talking to my family and just deciding what I want to do.”

Olympic swimmer Phelps spoke with the Baltimore Sun at Meadowbrook Aquatic Center after a workout, and admitted that he “clearly made a mistake” by being photographed using a bong at a party at the University of South Carolina in November.

British tabloid News of the World ran the photo this past weekend, which resulted in scads of controversy over Phelps and his use of drug paraphernalia.

Phelps, who was convicted of a DUI in 2004, said that the hardest part of the situation was telling his mother, Debbie.

“Seeing my mom reminded me of how it was the day after I got my DUI, and I swore to myself I’d never do that again,” he said. “This is just a stupid thing of mine that I did, and I have to live with it.”

The merman, who has received support from the athletic and celebrity communities, says that he still has goals in his sport that he wishes to accomplish but might not get to.

“Yeah, there are still goals that I have in the pool, 100 percent. But I’m not going to let anything stand in my way. If I decide to walk away, I’ll decide to walk away on my own terms. If it’s now, if it’s four years, who knows. But it is something I need to think about and decide what I want to do.”

It’s the first time he’s been spotted in public since BongGate broke out over the weekend.

Phelps was photographed using a water pipe at a party at the University of South Carolina in November, and the picture was published in Britain’s News of the World over the weekend.

Phelps issued a public apology, and several celebrities and athletes have come to his defense.

But Phelps—who scored a record eight gold medals at last year’s Olympic games in Beijing—may not be out of hot water yet. Although some of his endorsement deals will reportedly continue, Phelps may still face criminal charges.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that Richland County Sherrif Leon Lott says that he will charge Phelps with a crime if he determines that he was actually smoking marijuana with the bong.

Phelps was at the college party in Columbia, SC (where the school is located in Richland County) while visiting a girl he was dating at the time who is a student there, Jordan Matthews.

“This case is no different than any other case,” Lott said on Monday. “This one might be a lot easier since we have photographs of someone using drugs and a partial confession. It’s a relatively easy case once we can determine where the crime occurred.”

Possession of marijuana is punishable in Richland county by 30 days in jail or a $570 fine.

Thirty days in jail is a long way from multiple Sports Illustrated covers.

The 23-year-old Phelps—who racked up a record eight gold medals at last summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing, China—was forced to apologize after British tabloid News of the World published a photo of him appearing to take a hit off a bong over the weekend.

And while both the International Olympic Committee, and Phelps’ sponsors Omega and Speedo have cut the athlete some slack on the matter, the athletic community itself is now weighing in with varying opinions.

Phelps’ Olympic teammates have quickly paddled to the swimmer’s defense, reports Us Magazine. Dara Torres, the 41-year-old swimmer who took home three silver medals from the Beijing Olympics, told the Associated Press, “This in no way, shape or form diminishes anything [Phelps has] done…It’s sort of a double-edged sword.”

She continues, “When you’re recognizable, you’re looked up to as a role model. He is recognizable, and everything you do gets looked at and picked apart. I guess that’s the price of winning 14 Olympic medals.”

Jason Lezak, a member of the USA’s Olympic 400-meter relay team, was more cautious in his support for his former teammate.

“While I don’t condone his conduct, I am a teammate and fan,” Lezak related to the AP via a text message. “Unlike many fair-weather people, I am sticking by him. If my wife and I can help him in any way, we will. I believe he will grow from this and be better person, role model and teammate.”

Even pop-rocker John Mayer chimed in today by Twittering, “Glad Phelps’ sponsors are sticking with him. We often have completely incongruous expectations for other people’s humanity vs our own.”

Coming from the other end of the spectrum is Phoenix Suns center Shaquille O’Neal. The 36-year-old NBA star and law-and-order advocate—who was sworn in as a reserve police officer for the Miami Police Department in 2005, while playing for the Miami Heat—was predictably disappointed by the news.

“Say it aint so what im reading about michael phelps,” O’Neal twittered today, “is this real?”

Funny, that was the same question many theater-goers asked themselves after watching Shaq’s 1996 cinematic effort, Kazaam.

ESPN reports that the IOC said today it was sure Phelps, 23, would learn from the “inappropriate behavior” detailed by both the News‘ photo and article, and that the Olympian would continue to maintain his role model status.

As well, Phelps’ big-money sponsor Omega deemed the incident a “nonissue,” while Speedo, who also has a deal with the athlete, noted, he remains a “valued member of the Speedo team.”

Britain’s News of the World unleashed a media firestorm after running its story detailing a party-filled weekend Michael Phelps took part in last November in South Carolina.

The Baltimore-born swimmer issued a statement soon after, which was printed by the New York Times.

“I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me,” he said. “For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”

Current World Anti-Doping Agency rules state an athlete is subject to sanctions only for a positive test during competition periods.

ESPN also notes that Speedo, which has been involved with Phelps since 2001, issued their own press release: “In light of Michael Phelps’ statement yesterday, Speedo would like to make it clear that it does not condone such behavior and we know that Michael truly regrets his actions.”

The sportswear company added, “Michael Phelps is a valued member of the Speedo team and a great champion. We will do all that we can to support him and his family.”

For now, it seems Phelps has managed to avoid taking a dive with his endorsers. What do you think on the matter?

Phelps, 23, saw his fame shoot into the statosphere after winning a record eight gold medals last summer at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.

Altogether, the Baltimore-born  swimmer has 14 gold and two bronze medals.

But the British paper has published a damning report which notes that Phelps arrived at Columbia, South Carolina’s University of South Carolina to visit Jordan Matthews, a student he was seeing in early November, and proceeded to drink hard and get stoned during his wild stay.

“Michael came to visit Jordan but ended up just getting wasted every night,” says a News of the World source.

“He didn’t know many people so you’d think he’d be a little shy. But he was loud, obnoxious and slamming beers from the get-go.”

The photo that is alleged to be Phelps smoking pot was said to be taken at a house party in the South Carolina college town.

“You could tell Michael had smoked before. He grabbed the bong and a lighter and knew exactly what to do,” the NOTW party-going snitch added.

“He looked just as natural with a bong in his hands as he does swimming in the pool. He was the gold medal winner of bong hits. Michael ended up getting a little paranoid, though, because before too long he looked like he was nervous and ran out of the place.”

In December, Phelps was chosen as Sports Illustrated‘s Sportsman of the Year. As well, he’s earned millions in product endorsement deals since his summer 2008 wins.

The News of the World goes on to claim that the handlers in Michael Phelps’ camp—such as spokesman Clifford Bloxham—offered the publication “an extraordinary deal not to publish our story, saying Phelps would become our columnist for three years, host events and get his sponsors to advertise with us.”

Clearly, that was an offer the News could refuse.

UPDATE: The New York Times today published an apologetic statement from Phelps, issued by the athlete’s marketing agency, Octagon:

“I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment,” said Phelps.

“I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”

The carefully worded statement, however, made no acknowledgement of the pipe pictured in the News of the World‘s photo.

The 14-time Olympic swimming champion was catching a flight home for a well-deserved holiday break.

Famous now beyond his wildest tadpole dreams, Phelps has been adhering to a grueling schedule of inspirational appearances and wild partying.

He’s also touring to promote his new book, No Limits: The Will to Succeed.

The autobiographical read concentrates on Michael’s extraordinary achievements at the Beijing Olympics and “shares anecdotes about his family, his coach, his passion for the sport, and lessons learned from unexpected challenges and obstacles.”

One obstacle young Phelps never could have expected is the pushy lady in the provocative black top at LAX.

She’s even more persistent than the paparazzi!  Eyewitnesses claim that the young woman beelined for Phelps the moment he entered the terminal and stuck with him all the way to the ticket counter.

That’s closer than most of the U.S. swimmer’s Olympic rivals got.

But the well-rounded brunette should know that Michael is already booked up solid with offers from adoring fans.

The top-ten special airs Thursday night at 10 p.m. on ABC.

Among those who made the cut are former SNL funny-lady Tina Fey, who tells Walters that her Sarah Palin impersonation wasn’t particularly “mean,” and right-wing radio personality Rush Limbaugh, who would probably disagree.
