‘Fireworks’ Face-Off: Katy Perry vs. Drake vs. Kelis

Fourth of July is long over, but it seems all anyone wants to sing about lately is fireworks. Katy Perry, Drake and Kelis (of “Milkshake” fame) all have songs on their new/newish albums titled “Firework” or some variation thereof.

Below, we stack up the Independence Day-inspired tracks in a “Fireworks” Face-Off to be decided be the savvy Celebuzz readers in the following poll. Check out the tunes and let the sparks fly as you vote for Katy, Drake or Kelis in this battle of similarly-titled tunes.

First up is Katy Perry’s “Firework,” a slow-ish pop ditty with an inspiring message: “Own the night like the Fourth of July/’cause baby you’re a firework/Come on, show ‘em what you’re worth/Make ‘em go “Oh, oh, oh”/As you shoot across the sky-y-y.”

Next, Drake’s “Fireworks” (plural!) is straight rap with a little bit of soul, courtesy of Alicia Keys, who is featured singing, “All I see is fireworks…Every night it’s fireworks…Taking off like fireworks.” (Drake also alludes to his fling with Rihanna on this track. (Bonus: Actual firework sounds over piano music!)

Finally, check out Kelis’ electronic/dance tune, “4th of July (Fireworks,)” the contender that has “fireworks” tacked on to its title, but no actual mention of fireworks in its lyrics. However, Kelis does say of an amazing boyfriend (presumably not ex-husband Nas:) “You make me high/just like the sky/like the 4th of July.”

Kelis Gives Birth to a Boy

“Milkshake” singer Kelis Rogers-Jones gave birth to a baby boy, Knight Jones, on Tuesday at approximately 9 p.m. in New York, Us Magazine reports.

Rogers-Jones, 29, had been in labor since 2 a.m. on Monday and underwent a natural birth, with her mother and sister beside her in the room. Knight, who was born weighing 7 lbs., 8 oz., is the singer’s first child.

Kelis broke up with her husband and the baby’s father, rapper Nas, earlier this year. The two are currently involved in harsh divorce proceedings, with Nas asking a court to deny Kelis any spousal support and both sides seeking joint custody of the new arrival.

Kelis‘ milkshake won’t be bringing Nas to the yard anymore.

E! Online reports that the R&B singer—full name Kelis Rogers-Jones—has split up with her rapper husband (full name Nasir bin Olu Dara Jones).

“I can confirm that she has filed for divorce,” a rep for Kelis says. “We request the media to respect her privacy during this very difficult time.”

Rogers-Jones cites irreconcilable differences in her divorce petition.

Further complicating matters, the now-estranged couple are expecting their first child, a son, this summer. Kelis is asking for spousal and child support, as well as joint custody of the child-to-be.

The couple wed on January 8, 2008, after meeting at an afterparty for the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards hosted by hip-hop impresario Sean “Diddy” Combs.
