Since its publication in 1957, Jack Kerouac’s landmark novel On The Road has been a holy grail for filmmakers ranging from Joel Schumacher to Francis Ford Coppola — and finally Walter Salles, whose new adaptation is an unfettered, exuberant look at the early stirrings of the countercultural movement.

Sal Paradise (Sam Riley) stands in for Kerouac, a young writer getting over the death of his father while living with his mother in New York City. Artistically locked and directionless, Sal hangs around with fellow hipster Carlo Marx (Tom Sturridge) an Alan Ginsberg-like poet, who introduces him to Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), a fellow free spirit.

Based on real-life beatnik Neal Cassady, Moriarty lives impulsively, ignoring social norms like putting on clothes when he answers the door, greeting Sal buck naked while his teenaged wife Marylou (Kristen Stewart) sprawls languorously between the sheets. His loose morals, lack of direction and recklessness is the fuel that drives On The Road, perhaps the only counterculture movie with a bebop soundtrack.

When Moriarty and Carlo head to Denver, Sal soon follows, hitching his way cross country. Reuniting with his friends, he is introduced to Moriarty’s new girlfriend, Camille (Kirsten Dunst), one of many women who serenade and titillate Sal and Carlo with sighs of pleasure as they have sex with Moriarty behind closed doors – a recurring scenario in the movie.

Moriarty has parted with Marylou, but not for long. She returns later for more marijuana- and liquor-fueled cross-country trips, and three-way sex with Sal.

(“Spread those knees and let’s smoke some weed,” Moriarty tells her after she hides a bag of pot in her underpants when they’re stopped by a cop.)

Marylou becomes impatient with her husband’s philandering, foreshadowing the sting Sal will feel later when, feverish after some hard partying in a rural Mexican village, he too is abandoned by Moriarty.

A quintessential free spirit, Moriarty discovers that freedom is illusory. Whether by work, family, friends or the impulse to survive, we are all, to some degree, bound by something.

Garrett Hedlund arrived on the scene in 2010’s Tron: Legacy, a misbegotten monstrosity that showed him to be little more than another fair-haired boy with a winning smile. But his follow up in a supporting part as a winsome country singer opposite Gwyneth Paltrow in Country Strong showcased him as that movie’s strongest element.

With On The Road, Hedlund proves he is not just another pretty face. Moriarty is a plum role in which he effortlessly projects all the charisma and insouciant charm the character demands, highlighted with a trace of tragedy. As he raucously tells Sal about an orgy, he works up a joy that is as transient as the carnal encounter itself, finishing with a somber, “yeah… yeah…” as the laughter dissipates and his mordant silence leaves us wondering how much of a burden free will carries.

While Moriarty is the heart and soul of On The Road, Sal is its protagonist and conscience. Sam Riley never competes with Hedlund for attention, giving his costar center stage, but circles the action as the eyes and ears of the audience. Riley has demonstrated a wide dramatic range with movies like Brighton Rock and Control, where he played late Joy Division singer Ian Curtis. He is a consummate character actor who works gamely within On The Road’s ensemble, providing a discreet yin to Hedlund’s yang.

Kristen Stewart does the best work of her career in On The Road, finally shedding Twilight’s one-dimensional Bella Swan to infuse Marylou with the naive rebelliousness of youth and the heartbreak of unrequited love. With the Twilight franchise finally finished, Stewart is at a crossroad in her career, and the new movie provides her first credible performance since 2007’s Into The Wild.

Although On The Road has long been considered an unfilmable book, credit goes to director Walter Salles and screenwriter Jose Rivera for proving them wrong. Although the movie is not as engaging as the book, and some will be disinterested by its lack of plot and ambiguous message, to impose a strong narrative drive and tidy character arcs on Kerouac’s novel would do it a great disservice.

Brazilian-born Salles broke out with 1998’s Central Station, which garnered an Oscar nomination for its star, Fernanda Montenegro.
Six years later, The Motorcycle Diaries, chronicling a young Che Guevara’s formative years on a road trip across South America, won an Oscar for Best Song and confirmed Salles as a cinematic force to be reckoned with.

Re-teaming with Rivera, his latest movie exhibits formidable storytelling skills and a candid directorial style, servicing his actors as well as his audience with artistry and honesty.

With On The Road, Salles creates a vivid portrait of youth and spirited abandon that probably won’t resonate with everyone. But then again, the best movies seldom do.

Fresh off of Breaking Dawn – Part 2, Kristen Stewart seems to be reinventing herself, complete with a reversion to her teenage years, in a new trailer for On the Road.

An adaptation of Jack Kerouac’s iconic novel of the same name, the film follows two young men (played by Garrett Hedlund and Sam Riley) who take their first steps into adulthood against a post-WWII backdrop of jazz, poetry, sex and drug use – virtually all of which Stewart’s character participates in.

The Twilight actress plays the 16-year-old bride of Hedlund’s Dean Moriarty, who finds herself drawn equally to Riley’s Sal Paradise after the three embark on a road trip.

The book was adapted by The Motorcycle Diaries director Walter Salles from a script by Jose Rivera. The film also stars Viggo Mortensen, Amy Adams, Tom Sturridge, Elisabeth Moss and Kirsten Dunst.

Though she’s notorious for being camera shy and is most famous for playing Twilight‘s virginal-until-married Bella Swan, Kristen Stewart isn’t afraid of appearing nude on the silver screen.

The 22-year-old stripped down to nothing for the film adaptation of Jack Kerouac‘s famous novel, On the Road. Playing Marylou, the carefree wife of the story’s protagonist, Stewart said she had no qualms with baring it all for the camera.

“I loved the character, and I would have done craft services to be involved with that movie,” she said in an interview with Backstage.

“I know it’s an odd thing to say, but it didn’t worry me. I really do love taking walls down,” Stewart said of her topless scene. “I didn’t want to hide, especially as Marylou, she’s the last person who would hide.”

So what does get under the Twilight star’s skin?

According to Stewart, she’s always creeped out when she spots someone reading E.L. James‘ famous erotic novel, Fifty Shades of Grey – which began its literary life as a piece of Twilight fan fiction.

“When I read the first few pages describing her messy hair, I was like, ‘This is so strange.’ But it’s just so raunchy! I mean, obviously, everyone knows that,” she said.

“But when I see people reading it on planes and stuff, I’m genuinely creeped out. Like, you’re basically just reading porn right now! Get that blanket off your lap!”

As for Stephanie Meyer’s Twilight series? Stewart says she’s totally fine with the Bella Swan comparisons. In fact, she likes being associated with her onscreen persona.

“Other people try to distance me from her, but not me,” she admitted. “I’ve said it a hundred times before: I love Bella.”

Stewart and her on-again, off-again boyfriend Robert Pattinson make their final Twilight appearance in Breaking Dawn – Part 2, due out Nov. 16. On the Road opens in limited release on December 21.

Kristen Stewart has embraced a bold new style, wowing in one chic look after another as she hits the promotional circuit to tout her two upcoming films: Twilight Breaking Dawn Part II and On the Road.

Not only has the actress infused color into her edgy style, sporting a tribal print dress on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, but she’s experimented with some of the season’s most daring trends.

From a black-and-white shorts jumpsuit to a white crop top and black harem pants, Stewart not only gets props for taking on such bold looks, but for nailing these tricky trends.

Accompanying her fashion experimentation, Stewart has tried out new hair and makeup trends, too.

The actress rocked wine colored lips on the red carpet at the AFI Fest, and at a screening of On the Road in New York City on Thursday, she paired a black leather dress and motorcycle jacket with an ultra-dramatic take on smoky eyes taken straight off the runways.

Perhaps, even more noteworthy, the starlet has lightened up her dark, moody style, mixing bright, feminine styles and more natural, rosy makeup with her style signatures — black, leather, and vamp makeup.

It looks like some teen idols could learn a thing or two from the always polite Robert Pattinson.

The Twilight hunk is reportedly on a road trip with some pals and he has been charming fans and restaurant patrons at every stop he makes.

E! Online’s The Awful Truth reports that nearly every person who has come into contact with Rob on his road trip has been singing his praises as a “nice” and “very polite” young superstud.

One waitress said Rob was “very polite, quiet, undouchey and knows his wine.” Bar patrons at Texan bar also reported that the 24-year-old actor was “very, very nice” to all the fans who approached him, even while he was trying to unwind with his buddies.

Rob is reportedly taking a road trip to visit his sweetie, Kristen Stewart, while she films On the Road in New Orleans. Once Kristen wraps up her newest flick the two will begin filming Breaking Dawn.

Who knew that Robert Pattinson is a voyeur?

According to Hollywood Life, the Twilight heartthrob is intent on being present when his co-star and reported girlfriend, Kristen Stewart, films her sex scenes for the big-screen adaptation of Jack Kerouac‘s classic novel On the Road—because he’s fearful that something might happen between Stewart and her co-star, 51-year-old Viggo Mortensen.

A source tells Hollywood Life,

“Rob plans on being on the set of On the Road, not because he has a role in the drama, but because Kristen has a real risque part! There are a lot of sex scenes including a threesome, and Rob wants to make sure that it’s all pretend from the start and finish of the film.”

Mortensen will be playing the role of Old Bull Lee, based on Naked Lunch author William S. Burroughs. Stewart, meanwhile, is playing Marylou, a part based on LuAnne Henderson, the teenage wife of Neal Cassady (referred to as Dean Moriarty in the book/movie). And given that Marylou will be portrayed as quite the sexual libertine in the movie, R-Pattz isn’t taking any chances.

The source adds,

“He’s very jealous. Kristen told him she didn’t want him on the set because it would make her feel uncomfortable, but Rob said he’s going to be there. Especially now that her scenes are with Viggo, who is very very hot! Rob is free until filming begins on the next Twilight film, so he’s got all the time in the world to keep an eye on Kristen – and he will.”

The source further notes that Pattinson wasn’t thrilled with Stewart taking the role in the first place, because of all the sexual subject matter.

Already not a huge fan of the paparazzi (what A-lister is?) Kristen Stewart attempted to keep a low profile in a hoodie and shades at the international airport in Argentina on August 29. K-Stew was in South America shooting a sequence for On the Road, the film that brought boyfriend Robert Pattinson to the set in Montreal, where the pair was snapped kissing for the first time.

Unfortunately for the starlet, not even a trip to South America will keep the flashing lights away.

Watch out, Robert Pattinson; your (maybe) girlfriend Kristen Stewart seems determined to keep up with you in the steamy sex scene department.

Stewart is currently filming the movie adaptation of Jack Kerouac‘s classic Beat Generation novel On the Road (that is, when she isn’t busy locking lips with her Twilight co-star/beau), and according to Life & Style, her character, Marylou (based on LuAnne Henderson, the real-life wife of Neal Cassady, referred to as Dean Moriarty in the book/film), is quite the wild child:

“Her character, 16-year-old Marylou, has a threesome with a couple of hotties, asks to watch two people have sex and brags about loving to perform oral sex.”

This isn’t the only big-screen offering that K-Stew will be sexing it up in: In Welcome to the Rileys, out on November 5, Stewart plays a 16-year-old lap dancer who’s taken under the wing of James Gandolfini‘s Doug Riley character.

Kristen Stewart will be traveling On the Road with some high-profile company. The Twilight beauty, who’s currently filming the movie adaptation of Jack Kerouac‘s classic novel in Canada, has just been joined by two new co-stars. (Sadly, no, neither of them are named Robert Pattinson—though her Twilight co-star did pay Stewart a sexy visit on set yesterday.)

The Lord of the Rings star Viggo Mortensen and Enchanted actress Amy Adams have both signed on for the Walter Salles-directed adaptation, which is slated for release next year. Mortensen will portray Old Bull Lee, a character inspired by Naked Lunch author William S. Burroughs, while Adams will play Jane, based on Burroughs’ wife, Joan Vollmer. (Vollmer died in 1951 at the age of 28 when Burroughs accidentally shot her in the head. Apparently Adams, who has also signed on to play rock legend/drug casualty Janis Joplin, has acquired a taste for playing ill-fated historical figures.)

Stewart is portraying Marylou, based on LuAnne Henderson, the first wife of Neal Cassady (dubbed Dean Moriarty in the book/movie, and portrayed by Garrett Hedlund).

While Pattinson was surely hamming it up with Stewart on the set, his best friend, Tom Sturridge, also has a role in On The Road, so he had multiple reasons to pay a visit.

Aside from their on-screen romance in the Twlight movies, Robsten hopefuls haven’t had much PDA or evidence of any off-screen romance aside from rampant rumors. The closest the two came to getting physical in public was during the 2010 MTV Movie Awards, when they came thisclose to locking lips during their acceptance speech for — what else? — best kiss. If you spot pictures of Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson’s best friend Tom Sturridge hanging out together, don’t dismay: K-Stew and T-Stu (new nickname alert!) are filming a new movie together – On The Road – in Montreal.

A rep for R-Patz’s semi-lookalike buddy has confirmed he has a still-unknown role in the movie, an adaptation of the classic Jack Kerouac novel about the author’s epic road trips across America. Kirsten Dunst and Amy Adams are also reported to be in the cast.

While best known as one of Pattinson’s pals, London native Sturridge appeared in the comedy Pirate Radio and the period pieces, Being Julia and Vanity Fair. Twihards will be comforted to know that Kristen and Rob will be reunited shortly/this fall to film The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn.

It looks like the gods have finally answered our prayers: Project Runway‘s Santino Rice and Austin Scarlett are getting their very own TV show!

The show, called On the Road with Austin & Santino,  will follow around the two designers as they visit small towns in America and create “dream-come-true” looks for women in unique situations. It’s like What Not To Wear meets Extreme Makeover meets Queer Eye for the Straight Guy. Sounds great!

The show will premiere on July 29th, right after Project Runway‘s 8th season premiere. We can already smell the drama and fighting.

We just hope this doesn’t mean that Santino has thrown in the towel for judging RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Stewart is slated to film the movie adaptation of Kerouac’s famous novel, On the Road over the summer:

I am very much attached to a movie that has been trying to get made forever. Not that this is going to help it, but maybe I can just brag a little bit. I am super-excited about it, too. I am about to play Marylou in On the Road. So that’s a big deal.

It’s more than a big deal, Kristen, it is pretty much every wannabe bohemian 20-year-old’s dream!

Kristen Stewart has been told to hit the road, but in a totally awesome way. The Eclipse star has signed on for a role in the movie adaptation of the classic Beat Generation novel On the Road by Jack Kerouac, which is scheduled to begin filming this summer. Stewart will play Marylou, based on LuAnne Henderson, who married Neal Cassady (fictionalized in the story as Dean Moriarty) at the age of 16. K-Stew spills to USA Today,

“I am very much attached to a movie that has been trying to get made forever. Not that this is going to help it, but maybe I can just brag a little bit. I am super excited about it, too. I am about to play Marylou in On the Road. So that’s a big deal.”

The cast will be filled out by Control actor Sam Riley as Moriarty, and Tron: Legacy’s Garrett Hedlund as Sal Paradise, Kerouac’s alter-ego in the book. Walter Salles, who directed the 2004 Che Guevara biopic The Motorcycle Diaries, will helm the project.
