Paisley, a pattern that had been relegated as super outdated or overtly hippie-ish, made a big comeback this fall — and its resurgence should continue well into 2013.

The pattern has come a long way from its roots: The ancient Eastern design was first spotted when it was imported into Europe in the 17^th century and used mainly on wool or cashmere shawls. In the ’60s it was adopted by hippie culture, perhaps because it does look a bit  psychedelic.

These days, the print has been resurrected, popping up all over the fashion runways. After designer Stella McCartney included the print in her latest collection, stylish celebs like Gwyneth Paltrow and Kate Hudson jumped on the paisley bandwagon and it became a hot red carpet trend as well.

Now that the pattern is back in, you’ll find paisley on dresses, skirts, scarfs, jumpsuits…the list goes on. But, like any pattern, there’s some tricks to pulling it off.

When trying paisley for the first time, it’s best to follow some of the classic style rules: Always choose pieces that compliment your figure (patterns will only highlight problem areas when your clothes don’t fit right), and when it doubt, ease into the trend with a colorful scarf or bag rather than investing in a paisley dress or pair of pants.

Though mixing and matching prints is the peek of chic, paisley novices should avoid combining the boho print with other patterns on their first try.
