Tony Scott’s high-flying action classic Top Gun is getting a 3D release on theatrical screens and home video this week, which was originally intended to pave the way for a Top Gun sequel before Scott’s tragic death last year. Fans of 3D were no doubt excited for this bit of three-dimensional nostalgia, which now feels more like a kind of cinematic appetizer for the re-release of Steven Spielberg’s jaw-dropper Jurassic Park later this year.

Now that Hollywood is starting to turn away from transforming any and every upcoming blockbuster into a bad ass 3D experience starting to fizzle out, studios and filmmakers are starting to look at the technology on a film-by-film basis. Specifically, industry insiders are aiming their dimensionalization wand at movies that makes the most sense for the format, both past and present.

With the home video market now opening up its eyes to the option of releasing films in 3D — as Fox did last year with I, Robot– Celebuzz has assembled a wish list of classic titles that would look amazing if transformed using the technology.

Admittedly, our selections include a lot of films featuring complex visuals and elaborate production design — all of which has looked terrific in more recent 3D projects. But Celebuzz went all of the way back to 1961 for the earliest film on our list, and we include a real cross-section of great movies whose fans would flip out at the chance to fall into their world.

The cast and crew of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides have literally circled the globe over the last two weeks in the lead-up to the release of the mega-blockbuster this Friday. Starting in California and then hitting Moscow, Cannes, London and Madrid, it’s been a non-stop press barrage for Johnny Depp, Penelope Cruz and the crew — and they’ve looked absolutely fabulous doing so.

While Depp tends to stick to his signature hat-glasses-suit outfits, Penelope switches up her look at every photo call, press conference and red carpet, showing off her famous curves and good looks like a pro.

Ladies and gentlemen, Captain Jack Sparrow is back.

The first trailer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides has been unveiled, marking the return of Johnny Depp‘s infamous pirate role for the first time since the 2007 release of At World’s End, and the series doesn’t seem to have lost a step. Perhaps most notable about the Tides trailer is the debut of Penelope Cruz, who plays the role of Angelica, and looks quite stellar doing it.

Ian McShane, Geoffrey Rush and Judi Dench round out the superb cast, while POTC regulars Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley are no longer in the film.

The film is centered around Depp setting off to find the fountain of youth, and obviously, he runs into all sorts of problems and foes along the way.

Kim Kardashian isn’t the only sexy show-bizzer who’ll be popping up on your TV screen between all the football action during the Super Bowl this Sunday. Johnny Depp will also be making an appearance, in his guise as Captain Jack Sparrow.

Among the rabidly-anticipated Super Bowl ads this year is a spot for the upcoming swashbuckler epic Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, which moves into theaters on May 20. And, while brief, the ad packs everything in like an overstuffed treasure chest spilling gold doubloons. Depp, costar Penelope Cruz and Ian McShane engage in a cannon-blasting, sword-battling, skeleton-vanquishing spectacular.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides doesn’t hit theaters until May, but Disney is already laying the groundwork for the next installment of the hugely successful, Johnny Depp-starring series.

Deadline New York reports that Disney has completed negotiations with Pirates screenwriter Terry Rossio, who co-penned the first four movies, to work on the fifth installment. Disney is also said to be courting director Rob Marshall, who helmed On Stranger Tides, to return for the next film.

The best news of all? While Depp isn’t officially on board to reprise the role of Captain Jack Sparrow,the actor’s deal structure allows  for a fifth film, and it’s likely only a matter of time before he’s locked in.

According to The Daily Mail, Johnny popped up at Meridian Primary School after 9-year-old Beatrice Dunlap wrote Captain Jack Sparrow saying she and her school full of “young pirates” needed help staging a mutiny against their teachers.

Johnny Depp and Penelope Cruz are becoming quite the partners in crime. First it was the drug trade, now it’s piracy.

The Hollywood A-listers, who co-starred in the 2001 drug drama Blow, were back on set together filming Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides in Oahu, Hawaii, on Tuesday, and it’s difficult to say which was more breathtaking: The exotic locale or the two comely show-bizzers.

Hot on the heels of producer Jerry Bruckheimer‘s sneak peek at Captain Jack Sparrow on the set of Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Johnny Depp slipped into character to deliver a rum-soaked greeting to the crowd at this year’s Comic-Con convention, as seen in the video below.

Set for a May 20, 2011 release, On Stranger Tides follows Captain Jack and Barbossa on their quest to find the elusive fountain of youth, only to find that Blackbeard (Deadwood‘s Ian McShane) is also after it.

Pirates of the Caribbean fans got their first glimpse of the series’ fourth installment courtesy of director Jerry Bruckheimer, who tweeted a photo of Johnny Depp in full Captain Jack Sparrow gear for the world to see.

In his Tweet, Bruckheimer touted:

Not a whole lot of information about On Stranger Tides is known, aside from the fact that Penelope Cruz will step in to fill the void of Keira Knightley’s absence. According to IMDB:

Captain Jack Sparrow (Depp) crosses paths with a woman from his past (Cruz), and he’s not sure if it’s love — or if she’s a ruthless con artist who’s using him to find the fabled Fountain of Youth.

Don’t look for Orlando Bloom in the upcoming Pirates of the Caribbean 4. The Daily Mail reports that the actor has bowed out of the next installment of the highly profitable swashbuckler series—so that he can spend more time with his girlfriend, Australian model Miranda Kerr.

“Orlando loved the films but thinks it’s time to bow out because they tied up nicely for his character Will Turner,” says a source. “The producers are OK with that because they want to concentrate on the new adventures of Johnny Depp’s Captain Jack Sparrow.”

Though they’ve yet to make all those wedding rumors a reality, Bloom, 32, and Kerr, 26, are rumored to be taking their relationship to the next level by shopping for houses together. The two reportedly have their eye on a $13 million home in Malibu, California. “

They seem so happy together—a perfect match. You could see Miranda getting all dreamy-eyed when they looked at this house,” a source tells X17 Online. “It was beautiful —right on the beach.”

Sounds nice—and a perfect environment for Miranda to show off her flawless bikini body on a regular basis.

Bloom’s decision to duck out of Pirates 4 is particularly gallant—or foolhardy, take your pick—given the recent robbery from his home. After having $500,000 worth of jewelry filched from him, he could really use the paycheck.

Orlando Bloom‘s treasure chest has been robbed.

People reports that the Los Angeles home of the Hollywood hunk was broken into and that the burglars may have made off with Bloom’s treasure.  

Citing police sources, TMZ claims that the plunderers entered through a window and escaped with approximately $500,000 worth of jewelry.

The Pirates of the Caribbean star was filming in New York when the burglary occurred, but sources close to the actor do confirm that police were called to the scene of the crime.

Hopefully Bloom will catch these pirates and get back his personal goods.

British comedian Russell Brand—who made last year’s MTV Music Video Awards such an entertaining spectacle—was sporting some sweet silver boots as he appeared on The Late Show With David Letterman yesterday to promote his new literary masterpiece, My Booky Wook.

But he might consider trading them in for something more suitable for the high seas.

Brand tells Access Hollywood that he might be appearing alongside Johnny Depp in the next installment of the hugely successful Pirates of the Caribbean movie series.

If he can carve the time out in his busy schedule. “There’s been some talk of doing a Pirates movie,” the intriguingly coiffed funnyman notes. “But, I’ve got eight other things to do [including Forgetting Sarah Marshall sequel] Get Him To The Greek with Judd Apatow… So I don’t know if there’ll be time to be a pirate, I’ve got enough of that in me private life.”

Still, he’s not writing the possibility of becoming a swashbuckler off:  “[It's] a  possibility, yes.” Another possible obstacle to his inclusion in the Pirates saga is his pet feline.

“Someone’s got to feed the cat,” Brand offers. “He won’t feed himself. I’ve tried encouraging it but he expects cat food to be issued to him on a daily basis.”

All the more reason for becoming a pirate. At least with a pe parrot, he’d know exactly when it was time to break out the crackers.
