Before Kate Middleton, there was Diana Spencer: the people’s princess. She gave birth to princes William and Harry, was cheated on, divorced and unceremoniously dumped from the royal family like a figgy pudding on Boxing Day.

The new biopic Diana, starring Naomi Watts, focuses on the princess’ post-Charles life. The teaser trailer shows her numerous humanitarian activities as well as her secret relationship with heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan. There’s plenty of emoting here, Watts spends much of the teaser staring off into the distance or running dramatically through the night. It also suggests the film will focus intently on the differences between Diana’s public and private personas: smiling for the cameras, heart breaking behind closed doors.

Diana hits theaters (cinemas) this September.

To the surprise of many royal enthusiasts, Clarence House made a special announcement last week about the much-anticipated royal baby.

“Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are delighted to confirm they are expecting a baby in July,” the couple’s office said in a statement. “The Duchess’ condition continues to improve since her stay in hospital last month.”

The baby will share a birth month with the late Diana, Princess of Wales, who would have turned 52 on July 1 this year.

According to a palace aide, there isn’t a set protocol when it comes to due date information, Socialite Life editor Kelly Lynch reports. In fact, when Diana was pregnant with Prince William, the announcement was made less than 12 weeks into her pregnancy.

In other royal news, artist Paul Emsley unveiled the official first portrait of the Duchess last week. But the British press and critics alike have not been too kind on the piece of work.

The royal palace was elated with the news of Kate Middleton‘s pregnancy, but none would be more thrilled with the baby announcement than the late Princess Diana, according to the actress playing her in a forthcoming film, Naomi Watts.

Watts, who did extensive research on the royal family her role in the biopic Diana, told Celebuzz that “the people’s princess” would’ve been “overjoyed” to learn that her 30-year-old son Prince William is now a father-to-be.

“I feel for her,” Watts said of the expecting Duchess of Cambridge. “But she seems like a level-headed girl.”

How does Watts feel about Middleton taking on the media’s coverage of her life in the public eye?

“She probably can handle it,” the 44-year-old Australian actress said while promoting her new film The Impossible. ”Obviously, there’s been some preparation, I’m sure.”

Middleton’s official office, Clarence House, caused a press frenzy when they announced the young royals, who were married in April 2011, were expecting their first child on Dec. 3.

Aside from the baby news making the front of every Fleet Street publication, photographers were immediately camped outside the King Edward VII’s Hospital in London, England — where Middleton was admitted for severe morning sickness — waiting to catch a glimpse of the 30-year-old mom-to-be.

“The media is very different now then it was back then,” Watts said, referring to Lady Di’s tragic death in 1997 after her car lost control during a high-speed paparazzi chase in Paris.

“It was all new back then and now I think we’ve been living with it.”

Since William and Kate’s lavish royal wedding in 2011, the young newlywed has often been compared to her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana. Now that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are officially expecting their first child, Celebuzz is taking a look back at Princess Diana’s best mommy moments with her little princes.

Even 15 years after her death, Princess Diana is still remembered for her remarkable poise during her time in the limelight, especially amid her very public divorce from Prince Charles. But if there was one thing the People’s Princess was most proud of, it was her role as a mother.

Despite their royal blood, Diana wanted her sons Prince William and Prince Harry to have normal upbringings. She took them to places like Walt Disney World and McDonald’s and bought them video games. In addition, they also visited AIDS clinics and shelters for the homeless with their charitable mother.

When William popped the question to Middleton in 2010, he did so with Diana’s 18-carat sapphire and diamond engagement ring. The ring has a significant emotional significance for William as Diana chose it after she got engaged to Prince Charles in 1981.

But that’s not the only way William can honor his late mother. There’s already talk of the possibility the royal baby will be named Diana, should the bundle of joy turn out to be a girl.

It’s a daunting task to portray a real-life princess beloved by millions and mourned the world over at the tragic news of her death in 1997.

The movie is Diana, currently in production, and the actor is Naomi Watts who reluctantly took on the role of the iconic royal.

“It’s a little scary playing possibly one of the most famous women of our time,” Watts tells Celebuzz. “There’s so much information out there that people are inevitably going to make comparisons.”

But Watts looks nothing like Diana!

Born in Britain but raised in Australia, Watts had to undergo a heavy transformation for the role including six weeks of dialogue training, four wigs and a prosthetic nose.

But if the nose is fake, the clothes are real, some of them, anyway. According to USA Today, in some scenes Watts will be wearing dresses actually owned by Diana.

Will this be another one of those grand Hollywood biopics?

Actually, Diana is an intimate love story chronicling the final two years of her life, (following her divorce), and her affair with Pakistani heart surgeon Hasnat Khan, played by Lost’s Naveen Andrews.

The two met when Diana was visiting someone in the Royal Brompton Hospital. According to her personal butler, Khan was “The true love of her life.”

There were rumors they planned to marry but Khan got cold feet due to media attention. At the inquest following her death in August 1997, he testified that their relationship had ended months before.

“It was really very difficult for her,” Watts saya. “She’s definitely someone who had to fight for happiness, but impressive that she did and that she kept fighting for it given the circumstances.”

And how did Watts get over her reluctance to play the ‘People’s Princess’?

“I think, at the end of the day, if the script is good and the story is good,” she shrugs, leaving the blank to fill itself in. “The story had to be told at some point.” So why not Watts?

Naomi Watts turned a simple white shift into a statement-maker by pumping up the shoulder volume at The Impossible at Kinepolis Cinema in Madrid.

In Watts’ case, exaggerated shoulders gave the 44-year-old’s simple LWD (little white dress) a fashion-forward feel that was both retro and modern at the same time.

A fitted silhouette balanced out the big shoulders, ensuring the petite star looked like a lady, not a linebacker, while the feminine silhouette and brocade pattern, complete with Marchesa’s signature voluminous rosette, furthered Watts’ ladylike look.

Drawing attention up, the dress’ puffed-up shoulders framed the actress’ face and highlighted her retro hair and makeup. The epitome of old-Hollywood glamour, Watts’ classic red lip and classic curls, reminiscent of Veronica Lake’s famous waves, helped to soften the dress’ structured shoulders.

Though the LWD is from  Marchesa’s Resort 2013 collection, the heavier brocade fabric — a big trend for fall — transitioned Watts’ whites into fall.

To lend a modern twist to her retro look, the style star accessorized with a geometric clutch and platform sandals with metallic straps.

Real life or reel life? The line is being blurred.

Though Hollywood has long been all about recreating history, this year in particular seems to have seen a spike in historical flicks. The newest biographical project to bring to life an icon is The Anna Nicole Story, an upcoming made-for-TV movie for which Lifetime has tapped Private Practice alum Agnes Bruckner to transform into the late Anna Nicole Smith.

And Bruckner sure has some big cups — er, shoes — to fill. The film will chronicle the life and times of the troubled Playboy pin-up — born Vicky Lynn Hogan — tracing Smith’s journey from small-town Southern girl to millionaire-marrying, Marilyn Monroe-channeling model and celebrity/reality TV pioneer.

Bruckner certainly has a lot of company among Hollywood stars tackling real-life roles.

From Sean Penn‘s Academy Award-winning incarnation of first-ever openly gay elected official Harvey Milk, to Jesse Eisenberg donning Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg‘s hoodie, to Jamie Foxx‘s Oscar-winning turn as Ray Charles, Hollywood has been all about the biopic in recent years.

And this year, filmmakers are capturing the lives of many more famous faces. Naomi Watts has transformed into the late Princess Diana for the upcoming biopic, Diana. Lindsay Lohan brings Elizabeth Taylor alive through sex, scandal and screaming matches for Lifetime’s upcoming made-for-TV movie, Liz & Dick. Another upcoming backstairs-at-the-White-House docudrama, The Butler (about a valet who served eight presidents), has called on stars to morph into some well-known political figures. Friday Night Lights alumna Minka Kelly is portraying former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis (X-Man James Marsden is President John F. Lady Gaga is paying tribute to Britain’s most beloved icons.

In a recent concert at the Twickenham Stadium in London, the Mother Monster unleashed her new song “Princess Die” to honor the late Princess Diana and Amy Winehouse as part of her musical tribute.

“Since I was a very young girl, the ‘People’s Princess’ (Diana) was the most important person in me and my mother’s life,” she told the crowd. “I swore if I ever had an audience like this in London, I would take a moment to appreciate her … This is for her, Amy Winehouse, Alexander McQueen, Whitney Houston and me.”

So what’s the song about?

With lyrics like, “Leave the coffin open when I go/ Leave my pearls and lipstick on so everybody knows/ Pretty will be the photograph I leave/ Laying down on famous knives so everybody sees,” it is obvious that the tune has somber message.

“This song is a little bit sad,” Gaga said a concert in Melbourne, Australia in June when she first debuted the song. “It’s in no way reflective of the rest of music on the album, but it’s about some of the most deep and personal thoughts I’ve ever had.”

Aside from Princess Di and Winehouse, Gaga also paid tribute to John Lennon, covering the late Beatles member’s famous tune, “Imagine.”

“Twickenham, I’m not even sure what to say. I’ll never forget tonight,” the 26-year-old songstress wrote on her Twitter after the performance. “London you were the fairest of the ball. Now THAT was f*cking fun.”

Fifteen years ago on Aug. 31, the world tragically lost Britain’s beloved Princess Diana in a fatal car crash in a Paris tunnel.

But the People’s Princess’ legacy continues to live on today, through the royal family — including her two sons, Prince William and Prince Harry — close friends and adoring fans across the globe.

And now, the Princess of Wales will be remembered on the big screen.

Naomi Watts is starring as the iconic royal in Diana, an Oliver Hirschbiegel-helmed biopic about the princess’ final two years of life.

Not only will the film highlight Diana’s divorce from Prince Charles, but it will chronicle her love affairs after leaving the royal.

After dating heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan for two years, Princess Di carried on an over-publicized relationship with Dodi al-Fayed (played by Cas Anvar), who died at her side — along with their driver, Henri Paul — in the August 31, 1997, accident.

And Watts is honored to play a part in remembering the woman who captured hearts all over the world.

“She is a part of our history,” the actress has said of Diana. “[She's] an incredible woman and fascinating, but a tragic ending. The film-makers came to me and it’s a good script, and it’s very scary and I kind of wanted to say no, but I couldn’t.”

On Friday, the world will mourn yet again for the People’s Princess.

Diana, the beloved Princess of Wales, was killed in a car crash 15 years ago, on August 31, 1997; her Mercedes smashed into a wall after reportedly being chased at a high speed by photographers on motorbikes in Paris, France.

But Diana’s legacy is living on — thanks, in part, to her sons Prince William and Prince Harry.

To honor Princess Diana, Celebuzz is taking a look at the princes’ lives, from their adolescent years to today.

Harry and William were just lads when their mother died — Harry was 12; William was 15. But they aren’t the only ones carrying on Diana’s legacy.

Her brother Earl Charles Spencer recently welcomed a daughter and named her after the late royal.  His wife, Karen Spencer, gave birth to Lady Charlotte Diana on July 31, 2012.

“We hadn’t settled on a first name before the birth, but Charlotte is a name we both loved, and it really suits her. We knew that as soon as we saw her,” Spencer said. “And, though it’s been 15 years since Diana died, I still miss her every day, and I very much wanted her commemorated in the naming of our daughter.”

Even 15 years after her death, Princess Diana is still remembered for her remarkable work in charity and astonishing poise during her time in the limelight, especially amid her public divorce from Prince Charles.

Unfortunately, her life was tragically cut short on August 31, 1997, after her car crashed into a divider at the Pont de l’Alma road tunnel, in Paris, France — leaving her with fatal injuries. Though the Princess of Wales was 36 when she died, she left a unforgettable legacy as thousands still mourn her death today.

Diana’s memory continues to be preserved, as Hollywood is working on a biopic of the late royal’s life. Named Caught in Flight, the movie stars Naomi Watts as the People’s Princess and will center around her relationships with heart surgeon Dr. Hasnat Khan (played by Naveen Andrews) and Dodi Fayed.

The movie is set to be released in 2013.

Diana’s eldest son, Prince William, also paid tribute to his mother by proposing to his then-girlfriend Kate Middleton with her blue sapphire engagement ring.

“It was only right the two were put together,” William said of passing on the heirloom to Middleton during his engagement announcement. “It was my way of making sure mother didn’t miss out on today and the excitement and the fact that we’re going to spend the rest of our lives together.”

Likewise, Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, also kept Diana deep within his heart: On July 31, the Earl and his third wife, Canadian philanthropist Karen Spencer, welcomed daughter Lady Charlotte Diana into the world.

Writing exclusively for Celebuzz, royal biographer Andrew Morton explains that, had Princess Diana been alive today, she would have guided son Prince William away from the Royal Navy and toward his responsibilities to his family.

How Prince William must envy his younger brother sometimes. The only decision Prince Harry has to make tonight is whether to dress for dinner and his choice of dessert: blonde or brunette.

While Harry ponders his dish of the day, William has a more indigestible problem to wrestle with. One that is giving him heartache, if not heartburn.

In the next few months, he has to decide if he wants to sign on for a further five years as a Royal Navy search and rescue helicopter pilot, a job he loves, or give it all up and to be a full-time royal.

It’s at times like these that he could well do with a bit of friendly parental advice from his mother. While it doesn’t seem like it, the last week in August marks the 15th anniversary of Diana’s death in a Paris underpass with her then-lover, Dodi Fayed.

Ironically, one of the last people she spoke to was her eldest son, who wanted her advice about a photo call Buckingham Palace had arranged for him and his brother.

Now, he faces a genuine dilemma, especially as he and Kate will be moving into Kensington Palace next year and, as one courtier said, “We expect the nursery to be noisy.”

If he follows his heart and signs up for a further five years, he will be leaving Kate literally holding the baby. Not only that, his departure on search and rescue missions around Britain and beyond means that Kate will be the only one working full-time for the family Firm, Prince Philip’s name for the House of Windsor.

If she were around, Diana would be steadfast in saying that he should now take his rightful place at the boardroom of the Firm. She would point out that it isn’t fair for him to expect his wife, who after all is a commoner, to undertake more royal duties than the future king. He is now 30, an age where royals in all the European houses, not just Britain, are expected to pitch in.

Who knows what the future may hold? In five years time, he could be Prince of Wales and his father King Charles III. Certainly the older generation need a hand, especially with Prince Philip’s failing health.

Diana would point out, with scarcely disguised glee, that her son and Kate are hugely popular, far more so than her ex-husband and Camilla Parker Bowles. They are the torch bearers of the future and Charles and Camilla cannot hold a candle to their bright light.

She would also remind William that to have such a position of such privilege and influence is a gift that he should use wisely to effect change for good. While a search and rescue pilot can help save individual lives — his crew rescued two teenagers swept away by the currents last week — his royal role touches millions.

Look no further than Diana’s landmine campaign, which has slowed to a halt since her death. Her humanitarian mission literally changed millions of lives and she would be telling her son that it was time for him to put his shoulder to the wheel full-time.

Of course, there would be personal reasons behind her argument. Not only would she enjoy seeing Charles constantly overshadowed, but she would rather have enjoyed being a grandmother sooner rather than later. She always wanted a baby daughter — if she had married again doubtless she would have had more children — but a grandchild is a special delight. They’re fun to play with but you can also hand them back.

Diana, who would by now be spending her time between America and Britain working for an international agency like the Red Cross, would also have a few words of concern for Harry. While Gingers have more fun, she would be worried that, amidst the fuss surrounding his Las Vegas strip tease, once again Harry got into trouble when he hit the bottle. She may be wondering whether it was time for him to step away from the cocktail bar – if not the cocktail waitresses.

When he was growing up she never really had any genuine concerns for him. He had the Spencer gene, reckless, fun-loving and devil may care. He is a survivor. Doubtless he would tell her to pour herself a drink — and calm down.

And according to the Earl, he knew his new daughter needed to carry Diana’s name the minute he met her.

“She’s adorable – another feisty little Spencer girl,” the 47-year-old told the Daily Mail of the 8lb 14oz. baby, his seventh child.

“We hadn’t settled on a first name before the birth, but Charlotte is a name we both loved, and it really suits her. We knew that as soon as we saw her.

“And, though it’s been 15 years since Diana died, I still miss her every day, and I very much wanted her commemorated in the naming of our daughter.”

The Princess of Wales died in the early hours of August 31 in 1997, after a car accident in a road tunnel in Paris, France. She was laid to rest in the Spencer family home, Althrop.

Althrop was also where the Earl and Countess Spencer tied the knot in June last year and, touchingly, was also where the newest Spencer came into the world – the first Spencer baby to be born at the ancestral home since 1793.

Earl Spencer has six children from his previous two marriages, while the Countess Spencer has two other daughters from her marriage to producer Mark Gordon.

After weeks of filming, Watts finally reenacted that tragic ending.

Dressed in a Lady Di-like black blazer and white trousers, the Oscar-winning actress shot the last night of the princess’ life — the fateful final hours of August 31, 1997, when she and beau Dodi Al-Fayed were killed in a car crash in Paris after being chased by paparazzi.

Watts could almost be mistaken for Prince Charles’ late ex-wife as she shot scenes on the Trieste, Italy, set.

Filming at night outside The Palazzo Stratti building — which will double in the film as The Ritz in Paris — Watts and her costars are mobbed by media and photographers as they try to flee the scene.

On that tragic night, the Princess of Wales exited the Ritz — bodyguard and boyfriend by her side — in an effort to escape the press, security footage of which was aired around the world. As her Mercedes sped though the streets of Paris, paparazzi on motorbikes stayed on their tracks. Just a few minutes later, the car had collided into a pillar in Place De L’Alma tunnel, fatally injuring the royal, Dodi and their driver Henri Paul.

While on location in Croatia, Watts stunned in a royal-blue ballgown as she remade the princess’ visit to the Chang Institute Down Under in Australia, where Diana famously visited for a dinner dance the year before her untimely death.

Caught in Flight, directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel, is due in cinemas in February 2013.

Over the past year, Kate Middleton, 30, has not only taken on the role as Prince William‘s wife and the title of Duchess of Cambridge, but she’s also filled the fashionable shoes of her late mother-in-law Princess Diana with her flawless sense of style.

But it’s the high-fashion designs of Alexander McQueen‘s Sarah Burton that got people talking. Burton designed her wedding dress and gushed over Kate’s keen fashion sense after the Royal Wedding, saying,

“It has been the experience of a lifetime to work with Catherine Middleton to create her wedding dress, and I have enjoyed every moment of it.”

As for Princess Diana, one of her favorite designers was Catherine Walker, and so might be the case for Kate. The Duchess wore the designer this past July during her and William’s tour of Canada.

While Kate went with McQueen for her wedding gown, when Lady Di was married to William, 29, and Prince Harry‘s father, Prince Charles, in 1986, she chose a memorable design by Elizabeth Emanuel. In lead up to Kate’s wedding, Emanuel offered up fashion advice to bride, telling TooFab,

“I think she’s got a very good figure, so she should probably wear something quite simple, but with a really nice, strong silhouette.”

Kate Middleton is certainly taking after her late mother-in-law Princess Diana style wise! Prince William‘s new wife stepped out in a stunning black velvet floor-length Alexander McQueen gown at the Sun Military Awards on Saturday.

The dress was strikingly similar to that of Diana’s in November 1985. She wore a midnight blue velvet Victor Edelstein gown to the White House, and even danced with John Travolta. The dress was later auctioned off.

Jessica Chastain is set to take on her biggest role yet. The actress, who starred in The Tree of Life, will star as Princess Diana in Caught In Flight, Indiewire reports. The film will feature the love story between Diana and Dr. Hasnat Khan, a Pakistani-born surgeon with whom she had a relationship in the mid-90s, concluding in 1997.

In recent years, films based off of the lives of exceptional real-people people have proven to be huge successes, both with fans and with critics. One of the earliest award-winning biographical films was Erin Brockovich in 2000, which starred Julia Roberts as the environmental activist. Other award winners include Ali star Will Smith for his portrayal of Muhammad Ali, and Leonardo DiCaprio for his portrayal of aviation pioneer Howard Hughes in The Aviator.
