“I would like to sincerely apologize for my off-color remarks to the press yesterday from Calgary,” Avery said in a statement. “I should not have made those comments and I recognize that they were inappropriate.

“It was a bad attempt to build excitement for the game, but I am now acutely aware of how hurtful my actions were. I caused unnecessary embarrassment to my peers as well as people I have been close with in the past.

“I apologize for offending the great fans of the NHL, the commissioner, my teammates, my coaching staff and the Dallas Stars management and ownership. As many of you know, I like to mix it up on and off the ice from time to time, but understand that this time I took it too far.”

Speculation abounds that Avery’s comments will result in him being dumped from the Dallas Flames permanently, and his $15.5 million dollar contact dissolved.

Avery will meet today with NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman at the league’s New York office to determine his fate.

28-year-old Avery, who is currently under a $15.5 million dollar contract with the Dallas Star, incited the wrath of the NHL for not upholding (of all things) a gentlemanly demeanor that the game has come to expect.

In his native Canada to play the Calgary Flames, Avery lashed out to media after a practice last night regarding Dion Phaneuf, current beau to 26-year-old Cuthbert.

“I just want to comment on how it’s become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds,” Avery said, “I don’t know what that’s about, but enjoy the game tonight.”

In addition to Cuthbert now dating Phaneuf, Avery has also been linked to model Rachel Hunter, 39, now married to Los Angeles Kings hockey pro Jarrett Stoll.

The NHL responded with an immediate suspension, punishing Avery for a currently-undisclosed amount of time for “inappropriate public comments, not pertaining to the game.”

If only all ex-girlfriends got such justice.

The leggy blond swimsuit model claims the training she’s done for the NBC series has packed muscle on her 5-foot-10 frame, making her look bulkier than usual.
