Tom Arnold made a surprise appearance at ex-wife, Roseanne Barr’s Comedy Central Roast last month, a move that took days of wrangling between publicists and lawyers to bring the estranged couple together.

“I had a lot of fears,” Arnold confessed to Celebuzz. “It’s her thing, it’ s her night to be honored. It’s her friends and I’m not one of those guys.”

Taped on Saturday, August 4th, the roast aired this past weekend. The Tuesday before the taping, Arnold got word that Barr had an idea for a gag where he would come out dressed as a waiter, serve her a drink and walk away.

Not surprisingly, this idea was nixed, with Arnold holding out for something a little more edifying.

The next day, Barr’s team came back suggesting Arnold appear half way through the event with a fusillade of jokes directed at the roasters, but not Roseanne herself.

Arnold’s publicist’s response: “Over my dead body.”

Barr and Arnold’s vitriol goes back to a sordid and messy divorce that reflected a publicly sordid and messy marriage.

Arnold, a former meat packer from Iowa, rode Barr’s coattails into showbiz, eventually reaching a career high costarring in 1994’s True Lies with Arnold Schwarzenegger.

Barr enjoyed a meteoric rise from midwestern comedy clubs to become one of the biggest stars of the nineties with her top-rated working-class sitcom, Roseanne.

“We literally haven’t spoken in 18 plus years,” said Arnold about his ex-wife. So Arnold decided to put in an appearance on the condition that Roseanne say one nice thing about him.

Roseanne came back with, “I want to thank everybody for coming, and I do mean everybody.”

“She hasn’t said one nice thing in 18 years and that’s the best she can do?!” Arnold gasped. In the end, she agreed to say, “Tom was great for coming here. I’m glad he came. He’s always made me laugh.”

Only Roseanne knew Arnold would be there that night. So when he took his place at the mike, a shock rippled through the crowd, followed by a standing ovation.

When it was all over, Roseanne called him over.

“I just want to say, I know why you were nervous,” she told him. “But I’m glad you did this. I’m in a good place. You’re in a good place.”

Afterward, the two exchanged a few emails, but they don’t really keep in touch.

“I felt like let’s leave this where it is,” said Arnold. “When things go good, you just want to leave it good.”

“She’s such a nightmare. Sorry, her career is over. Her tour has been a disaster…and she looks like a f***cking fairground stripper.”

“She’s such a nightmare,” John fumed to longtime friend Molly Meldrum in an interview. “Sorry, her career is over. Her tour has been a disaster.”

“If Madonna had any common sense,” he continued, “she would have made a record like Ray of Light, stayed away from the dance stuff and just been a great pop singer and made great pop records, which she does brilliantly. But no, she had to prove that she was like …,” he said, not specifying. “And she looks like a f***king fairground stripper.”

Mere hours before he pushed (almost all) boundaries Saturday with a joke about the killings at July 20′s Aurora, Colo. screening of The Dark Knight Rises, notoriously caustic comedian Jeff Ross said he was out to hurt feelings.

“[I'm] going harder than anyone I’ve ever roasted [tonight], because she represents that,” Ross told Celebuzz on the shag carpet at Saturday’s Comedy Central Roast of Roseanne Barr.

“She’s an unapologetic comedian — so I think we would be doing her a disservice by holding back. My goal is to hurt her feelings.”

What was Ross’ ‘Dark Knight Rises’ joke?

The comedian got the biggest groan of the night inside the R-rated show when he said that fellow roaster and Family Guy star Seth Green resembled James Holmes, 24, the shooter who allegedly took 12 lives and injured 58 others at the tragic midnight screening of Dark Knight Rises.

“Congratulations,” Ross said to Green. “This is actually a really big night for you. You haven’t gotten this much attention since you shot all those people in Aurora.”

Ross followed up with, “I’m kidding! You’re not like James Holmes. At least he’s doing something in a movie theater that people remember.”

Partygoers whispered in the TV taping, which airs Aug. 12 on Comedy Central, that the joke was “not funny” and “offensive.” The network has subsequently confirmed that the joke will be cut from the broadcast of the roast.

Ross didn’t just raise eyebrows with his mouth: he has worn provocative outfits at past Comedy Central roasts, such as that of a Sacha Baron Cohen-like Dictator suit, and this year he didn’t disappoint. His costume: that of now-deceased former Penn State coach Joe Paterno, who died in January 2012.

Paterno allegedly looked the other way while convicted pedophile and Penn State assistant coach Jerry Sandusky had sex with young boys — sometimes in the Penn State football team’s shower.

Two boyish guys with their shirts off, in football helmets and wrapped in white towels, joined Ross, who donned a football coach’s jacket, oversized glasses and a ball cap emblazoned with a “P.”

Before the show, Ross told Celebuzz he was making “a statement” with the Paterno get-up. Throughout the night, he said repeatedly, “Let’s hit the showers.”

He made reference to his get-up yet again when asked about the fate of Breaking Dawn — Part 2‘s Robert Pattinson, 26, and Kristen Stewart, 22, who are still reeling from Stewart’s admitted affair with director Rupert Sanders.

“I don’t know much about that. They’re adorable, though. Aren’t they young? Things happen,” Ross said about the pair. “Who am I talk? I’m here with two young boys.”

Ross even took a parting shot at our reporter on the red carpet — even if it was, admittedly, a bit funny.

“I have a new [Comedy Central] show coming out called The Burn, which is even more racist than the Olympics. It’s about making fun of people, people like you for instance,” Ross said. “You’re wearing your uniform from Arby’s.”

The shirt, for the record, had red and white stripes.

Another controversial comic, Gilbert Gottfried, served as a fellow roaster alongside Ross and Green.

Gottfried was famously fired from his commercial job as the Aflac duck in 2011 after an insensitive tweet about the Japanese tsunami, which killed scores of people. He recently wrote an editorial story for CNN.com defending controversial comic Daniel Tosh.

Of course, the night’s main attraction has faced her share of controversy also.

Barr famously butchered the National Anthem in 1990 — and when booed by the audience, she grabbed her crotch and spit in an apparent side of disrespect.

With the media and public’s constant watch, celebrities often have to watch what they say. But not everyone can escape the occasional gaffe.

In the November issue of Vanity Fair, Johnny Depp revealed his extreme disdain for photo shoots, and even went as far to compare it to violent sexual assault.

“Well, you just feel like you’re being raped somehow. Raped…It feels like a kind of weird–just weird,” the Rum Diary actor said. “But whenever you have a photo shoot or something like that, it’s like–you just feel dumb.”

Depp’s quote didn’t fare well in the public spotlight. The Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN) vehemently disagreed with the statement, which Depp quickly responded to with a sincere apology on Tuesday, saying: 

“I am truly sorry for offending anyone in any way. I never meant to. It was a poor choice of words on my part in an effort to explain a feeling,” the actor remarked. “I understand there is no comparison, and I am very regretful.  In an effort to correct my lack of judgment, please accept my heartfelt apology.”

The Pirates of the Caribbean star isn’t the only celebrity under heat for controversial statements. Brad Pitt‘s comments about his former marriage to Jennifer Aniston during a Parade interview caused the Moneyball star to think twice about his statements.

“All I know is that my point was, the best thing I’d done as a father is be sure that my kids have a good mother….That’s all I was, or am, trying to say, ” he told Matt Lauer. “It has no reference to the past. And I think it’s a shame that I can’t say something nice about Angie without Jen being drug in. You know, she doesn’t deserve it.”

Brad’s comments got us thinking about John Mayer‘s infamous 2010 commentary about ex-girlfriend, Jessica Simpson. “That girl, for me, is a drug, “said the 33-year-old singer. “And drugs aren’t good for you if you do lots of them. Yeah, that girl is like crack cocaine to me…Sexually it was crazy. That’s all I’ll say. It was like napalm, sexual napalm…”

Then, late last week, country crooner, Hank Williams Jr.’s comparison of Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler during a Fox & Friends interview caused jaws to drop across the nation. ESPN pulled his theme song from its Monday Night Football opening, and Williams issued an apologetic reply afterward.

Megan Mullally is one of the few actresses in Hollywood who can easily play a wide range of comedy. From the scene-stealing Karen in beloved NBC sit-com, Will & Grace, to the decrepit “Chief” in Adult Swim’s off-beat Childrens Hospital, Megan has proven that she can easily mix in with TV’s A-listers and still hold court with the comedy cool kids.

Celebuzz got a chance to talk to the hilarious actress about the third season of Childrens Hospital, her work on Party Down, and how she feels about her husband (and Parks & Recreation mustachioed stud) Nick Offerman gunning for Oprah to play his first wife on his hit NBC show.

Childrens Hospital plays off of a lot of other medical shows – were you a fan of medical dramas before you started the show?

Yeah, I don’t watch any. I watched ER when it was at its peak of success. But no, I’m not a medical drama person…I don’t like them. It kinda grosses me out or something [laughs].

That’s funny, because I interviewed Rob Corddry last week and he also said that he wasn’t into medical dramas at all when he started the show.

Well, I’ve seen enough episodes of those shows to send them up, but I don’t watch them on a regular basis.

You guys also have a lot of great guest stars coming through the show – are there any dream guest stars that you’d like to work with?

Oh, yeah! Catherine O’Hara, she can play my sister [laughs]. There are so many people… I think that something that is really noteworthy is that there is this whole big far-reaching circle of people who do comedy in Los Angeles. A lot of the Upright Citizens Brigade people moved to Los Angeles in the last couple of years and it turned everything around for comedy in Los Angeles. There is this influx of new people with innovative ideas and that is part of the reason that Childrens Hospital has come together in the way it has.

It’s really interesting, there is this big network of comedy people. I’d say that it is overall really supportive and collaborative; everybody wants to work with everybody else. There is no exclusivity about it, if you’re funny and you’re a nice person you’re in!  So that’s what’s been really great, that extends to Parks & Recreation, that whole group, and certainly Amy Poehler and Aubrey Plaza and all of those people, those are New York transplants. The whole Party Down group is included in that too. So it is definitely really great!

There has definitely been a lot of crossover between shows – especially Parks & Recreation, Party Down and Childrens Hospital. Have you found any difference working for a more off-beat comedy like Childrens Hospital and Party Down as opposed to a traditional network sit-com?

Maybe there is more a cool factor for shows like Childrens Hospital that are so off the beaten path that it gives you the impression that you are the only person who has discovered it. So that is appealing to audiences I think. It’s funny that this show has done so well, because it is on this network that people aren’t particularly familiar (Adult Swim). I didn’t know much about it. I had heard about it but that was it, I didn’t know that it was the nighttime version of Cartoon Network and I didn’t know that they take a lot of risks on that network and they’re really innovative, they do it their way.

It’s great too, it’s great from a producing standpoint because there is no interference from the network. On shows like Childrens Hospital and Party Down, I don’t think we get like any network notes from Adult Swim and we got a few on Starz. That’s kind of freeing too, it becomes more of a hotbed of creativity when you have the freedom to be innovative. Some of the episodes of Childrens this season, there is something really groundbreaking about some of them because I haven’t seen anything done like that on television. Just conceptually and technically, the look of the show and the way it is shot. Content-wise, all of the episodes are just jokes, but I think conceptually what they are doing with the show is pretty innovative.

Does it feel liberating as an actress to play a character like The Chief who is so, well, gross? Everyone wants her but she is literally falling apart.

That is the joke, she is the most disgusting person on earth but everyone wants to f**k her. Every year I try to think of how to get grosser and grosser – now I’m up to, I walk on a walker, I have a hunchback, I have a traveling mole, I can’t wear any makeup, I wear giant glasses and I wear man’s wig. Where do you go from there, I’m not sure [laughs]. I got really mad because they are doing this other show on Adult Swim where a female character wears an eye-patch and smokes a pipe, and I was like, ‘Damn! Why didn’t I think of that?’ So if you have any suggestions, I’m open to them.

I can’t think of that many other actresses who would [play a gross character]. I guess Catherine O’Hara would do it. I mean, Laura Linney has done stuff without makeup, but she is on John Adams which is on HBO, with like 20 Emmys, but you know, this is comedy.

Going into Parks & Recreation your husband Nick Offerman (who plays Ron Swanson on the show) recently said that he thought Oprah should play his first wife, Tammy 1, because she is the only person who could intimidate you. Do you agree with that?

Yeah, I totally agree with that. That pitch actually came from a friend of mine I have known since first grade. Nick and I were in Oklahoma City, and we were having dinner with this guy and he said ‘What about Oprah?’ and Nick and I were like, ‘Yes. What about Oprah, what about Oprah.’ So we pitched that to [NBC] really hard but I don’t think….I think they have to go somewhere in a realm that would be…I don’t know, I don’t know what they are thinking. I don’t think Oprah turned it down, but I think they are trying to be a little more realistic [laughs].

We were pitching a lot of people, we were pitching Helen Mirren, Rosie O’Donnell, Roseanne Barr. We tried to think of people that were intimidating but funny too. What do you think?

I think Helen Mirren would be pretty good.

She would be so good! I like the idea that she is a little older. Ron likes the older ladies.

Get your passport, sweetie darling! Jennifer Saunders‘ cult classic comedy series Absolutely Fabulous is headed to America—again.

The series follows two narcissistic, intoxicated older gals, perpetually hunting for youth, glamour and gratuitous praise. The original show ran on the BBC from 1992 to 1996, and was later resurrected from 2001 to 2005.

Fox will update the British import against the backdrop of Los Angeles, with support from the creative teams behind Arrested Development and Saturday Night Live.

This isn’t the first stab at Ab Fab for America. Over ten years ago, then-comedy queen Roseanne Barr snatched up rights to the property and attempted an ill-fated remake starring Carrie Fisher.
