Valentine’s Day has come and gone, and it appears that lovers spent their time at home – or at least away from movie theaters – instead of celebrating their affection via the silver screen.

Meanwhile, action lovers turned out in droves to watch Bruce Willis beat the stuffing out of bad guys in A Good Day to Die Hard, and in slightly fewer numbers, comedy fans came back yet again to check out Melissa McCarthy and Jason Bateman in Identity Thief.

This Friday, Willis will have some competition in the action department courtesy Dwayne Johnson’s Snitch, while Keri Russell makes her first venture into horror with the shrouded-in-secrecy film Dark Skies. Last weekend, the critically-trounced Identity Thief left its mark on the box office, but this week, three solid contenders hope to dethrone it from the top spot.

Given the Valentine’s Day holiday, it comes as little surprise that Hollywood released not one but two films featuring appropriately sweeping love stories, while simultaneously providing effective counterprogramming in the form of a bombastic action sequel.

Precisely what will take the biggest share of the weekend box office revenue remains to be seen, but scroll through trailers for all of the highest-profile films being released this week as you decide which one will get your hard-earned money.

It’s that time of year again, movie buffs! Yep, that’s right. Another Valentine’s Day, another overtly romantic movie with a poster of the two beautiful lead actors in an embrace.

This year’s selection is an adaptation of a novel from the man who seems to have nothing but romantic bones in his body, Nicholas Sparks. Seriously, Sparks is like the romantic gift that keeps on giving.

The latest novel-turned-sappy-movie is Safe Haven, starring Josh Duhamel and Julianne Hough. The pair of leads easily fit into the roster of Sparks-leads alumni including Amanda Seyfried, Mandy Moore, Channing Tatum, Rachel McAdams, Ryan Gosling and Zac Efron, to name a few, but does the newest edition to the Nicholas Sparks movie collection have as much (pun intended) heart as the movies that came before it?

Critics weighed in, and according to them, the film is generally lackluster. But, in the end, it all depends on what the audience thinks. Meaning, don’t let the critics discourage you too much! Having said that, here’s a look at exactly what they had to say about the film:

Harsh, huh? Again, just take the reviews with a grain of salt. That said, did you see the latest romantic mush-fest that is Safe Haven? If so, do you agree with the critics? We at Celebuzz want to know (so we can decide whether or not to see it, too).

Since Kevin Costner and Robin Wright Penn brought Message in a Bottle to the screen in 2000, author Nicholas Sparks has entertained audiences with his deeply romantic and often tragic tales of love found, lost and regained.

Thirteen years later, Sparks revisits his winning formula again with Safe Haven, the story of a troubled young woman who finds love while on the run from her mysterious past.

But even after successfully creating some of the last decade’s most iconic romances, including The Notebook, the writer says that he’s sure of only one thing when it comes to creating these indelible stories.

“Everybody falls in love,” Sparks tells Celebuzz. “How do you make that original and fresh to somebody? How do you do that new? It’s been done so many times before.”

Sparks admits that he still struggles to find the right way to combine new circumstances and timeless ideas when crafting his latest tome.

“I don’t know still that I’m perfectly comfortable doing it,” he says. “Whenever you’re trying to evoke genuine emotion, it is a tough thing to do, especially when you’re trying to evoke a variety of them.”

Although his work certainly deserves credit for connecting these films with their audiences, Sparks insists that it’s the people on screen who truly make them memorable and effective.

“The elements that have made these films work are the chemistry,” Sparks says. “I’ve had actors with great chemistry. Ryan [Gosling], Rachel [McAdams], Channing Tatum – I’ve had great casts, great directors.”

This Valentine’s day, the world of cinema is giving us all kinds of choices when it comes to that iconic ritual of a “Valentine movie date.”

Going head-to-head-to-head this Thursday, February 14th is the newest installment of the Bruce Willis action franchise, A Good Day To Die Hard, the movie adaptation of another supernatural love story novel, Beautiful Creatures, and the movie adaptation of a more traditional love story, albeit one laced with mystery and danger, Safe Haven.

It’s really impossible to predict which of these movies will draw in the largest crowd on this holiday, because everyone celebrates differently.

Beautiful Creatures, a romantic thriller about a teen witch and a human who fall in love against the backdrop of a sleepy Southern town, features an all-star supporting cast including Emmy Rossum and Jeremy Irons. The film will surely attract people looking to ease their Twilight withdrawals. Meanwhile, the Nicholas Sparks adaptation Safe Haven, starring Julianne Hough and Josh Duhamel, will satisfy people who haven’t enjoyed a properly melodramatic romance since The Notebook.

But of course, there will definitely be people who want to go in the complete opposite direction and indulge in some good, old fashioned on-screen car chases and explosions. Die Hard promises to deliver just such an injection of adrenaline, as all the previous movies in the series have.

Has Josh Duhamel picked up a few dance moves from wife Fergie?

From the looks of Tuesday night…yes. The dapper actor showed off his fancy footwork as he paid a visit to Late Night with Jimmy Fallon to promote his latest film, Safe Haven.

“Here’s my one concern I would have being married to Fergie—dancing. Does she make you dance? She’s a good dancer,” Jimmy Fallon pondered.

“We’ve danced, but I keep the expectations low,” Duhamel replied. “We could dance if you’d like.”

Before he got to business, Duhamel waxed nostalgia, recalling a previous appearance his wife made on the talk show, which involved some hard alcohol.

“I saw her when she was on your show a while back, that’s a lot to live up to,” Duhamel added, “with the shots of vodka and everything else.”

Fallon then proceeded to show the audience his signature move: a backward arm motion with him saying “I’m going to the bar.”

And with that said, Duhamel called on the show’s house band, The Roots, to give the comedian some musical accompaniment.

“He gave us a little music, we could do it. I’m down,” Duhamel said.

The actor then joined Fallon, providing viewers a few seconds filled with sexy, booty-popping moves to much of the viewers’ approval.

But the fun didn’t end there. Staying in tradition of the show’s famous games, Fallon invited the actor to play “Cooler Scooters,” a race which involved the pair zipping around on motorized coolers while sipping on Budweiser from novelty beer hats.

“You’re going down, dude,” Duhamel told Fallon with a laugh.

Safe Haven hits theaters on Valentine’s Day, Feb. 14.

Celebs are often the first to give runway looks a spin, so we weren’t surprised to see the dress-over-pants runway trend, brought back to life by Raf Simons for Dior’s spring ready-to-wear and couture collections, reappear on the red carpet.

Emma Watson debuted the layered look in all-black Dior at The Perks of Being a Wallflower London premiere last fall, and the daring look later popped up on another always-ahead-of-the-curve star when Marion Cotillard paired her pants with a center-slit ball gown, also by Dior.

Though other stars have tried the dress-pants pairing on the red carpet every now and then, there’s a reason its a rare sighting — it’s hard to pull off. The proportions have to be just right to avoid the layered look from appearing bulky, mismatched or just plain weird.

Unfortunately, Julianne Hough’s attempt at the tricky trend for the New York premiere of Safe Haven demonstrates why this look requires some serious styling chops.

While we applaud the Dancing with the Star alum for taking risks on the red carpet, the proportions of her monochromatic gray separates were off. The past-the-knee George Hobeika dress looked messy with with the tailored ankle-length trousers, and the vibe of the feminine floral-embroidered frock and the office-appropriate front-pleat pants clashed.

Hough’s ensemble would have worked better by losing the embroidery on the dress, shortening it several inches, and layering skinnies underneath for a more streamlined and flattering look.

Since 2010, Rooney Mara has worked with David Fincher twice and Steven Soderbergh once – not bad for an actress whose “breakthrough” role also came that same year when she starred in the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street.

But the actress tells Celebuzz that even with the abundance of great opportunities she’s enjoyed recently, there’s still a depressing dearth of real acting challenges for women.

“It’s hard,” Mara says. “There aren’t that many roles out there that are great for females, that are dynamic and complex.”

In Side Effects, Mara plays Emily, a young wife struggling to deal with depression who eventually turns to prescription medication that has dangerous side effects. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the roles that have distinguished her – her lead in Nightmare, and the title character in Fincher’s The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo – have all been not just meaty, but dark, featuring a complexity, and a certain kind of melancholy which she’s really mastered.

Despite the acclaim she’s received, however, Mara insists that she’s interested in taking on different kinds of characters, and has tried to do so as much as possible. “Hopefully I’m succeeding, but I try and make sure everything I choose is very different from the last,” she says.

“I am more drawn to the darker stuff, but I think that’s because those are normally the more complex, interesting characters.”

The Notebook fans, rejoice – Nicholas Sparks is back on the big screen with another tale of romance in a sleepy Southern town.

In the new film Safe Haven, Sparks tells the tale of a young woman named Katie (Julianne Hough), who finds new love with a widowed father of two named Alex (Josh Duhamel) while trying to escape her troubled past.

In a new TV spot exclusive to Celebuzz, the fair fight for one another – sometimes literally – as their relationship slowly unfolds.

Speaking to her new friend Jo (Cobie Smulders), Katie admits that she arrives in town with a lot of baggage – albeit emotional rather than physical.

“I’ve had things happen to me in the past,” she says.

Katie later confesses to Alex that she finds comfort in their burgeoning relationship. She says, “I’m happy here, with you.”

Alex, thankfully, reassures her that he reciprocates her feelings, and wants to protect her, if he can.

“There’s no safer place than here with me,” he insists.

Although she’s currently commanding the big screen as one of the co-stars of the romantic drama Safe Haven, Cobie Smulders established a solid comedic pedigree on TV as a member of the ensemble cast of How I Met Your Mother. But the actress says she defers to her husband, Saturday Night Live star Taran Killam, when time comes to parody the movies in which she appears.

“Taran is much better at coming up with sketch ideas than I am,” she tells Celebuzz.

“For me, I’d be like, yeah, you could do a parody of this movie. But he would go, let’s do a musical version, and then we could do puppets! He’s just so much more creative in that respect.”

That said, Smulders isn’t without her own ideas for sketches.

“I did actually have one great idea I pitched to Vanessa [Bayer],” she confesses. “The Long Island Psychic — anything where you could see that character being blown up and kind of zany.”

“I’m like, you should do that on the show! They’re so great!”

Though Julianne Hough revealed to Cosmopolitan in early January that she suffered from mental and physical abuse as a child, she declined to offer specifics, or reveal who was responsible.

But Hough has told Celebuzz that she chose to play an abused woman in the new film Safe Haven as a way to exorcise those traumatic experiences.

“I’ve moved on,” she said in a video interview.

“This was a great way for to do something that was healing and open for me, but also it could be helpful for others.”

In the film, Hough plays Katie, a fugitive from the law who hides out in a small North Carolina town after feeling she has no one to turn to for sympathy or support.

She said that she embraced the opportunity to tell victims of abuse not only that they have a voice, but their traumatic past or present needs not define their future.

“It’s about second chances,” Hough explained. “It’s about finding people that you love and that love you – and that you’re not alone.”

“Certain things happen, but it doesn’t dictate your life. You can start your life tomorrow, and that’s what Katie does.”
