Actor, singer, director, icon Barbra Streisand returns to the big screen this week in Guilt Trip, her first starring role since 1996’s The Mirror Has Two Faces.

“It meant for me to come back to work as a star, a starring role, rather than six days on a movie — which I really like, just six days on a movie,” she said about her brief appearances in Meet The Fockers and Little Fockers. “It was time to challenge myself again.”

An Oscar winner for her break out role as vaudevillian Fanny Brice in the 1968 classic, Funny Girl, Streisand has become not just a screen legend, but the voice of her generation with top 40 hits like The Way We Were and Evergreen.

She turned her hand to directing in 1983 with Yentl, about a girl who disguises herself as a boy to enter religious training, garnering five Oscar nominations and a win for Best Original Score. Her subsequent movie, The Prince Of Tides, received seven Oscar nods, including one for Best Picture, and The Mirror Has Two Faces was nominated twice.

“Trying to get movies made as a director, it’s very, very hard, and it’s not the same as when I last made a film,” said Streisand, speculating on whether she’ll direct again. “They are not interested in love stories or any movie that’s sort of over 15 million dollars. But it can be 100 million, that’s okay. 200 million is okay to lose. What draws me are movies that cost 18 million, 20 million. They are not interested in those movies. So it is a different time and I don’t like it as much.”

In Guilt Trip she stars opposite Seth Rogen as a mother-son couple taking a 3000-mile trip across country. Streisand talked candidly about playing a mom and being a mom to Jason Gould, her 46-year-old son with ex-husband, actor Elliot Gould. Perhaps appropriately, it was Jason who helped convince her she should sign on to Guilt Trip, after weeks of wavering.

Streisand and Gould were visiting their son who was recovering from back surgery when she showed him the script.

“We were both there coddling our son,” she recalled. “So he became the audience and Jason was reading all the parts to me and he said, ‘I think you should do it, mom.’ And I really trust his integrity and his opinion. So he clinched the deal.”

Streisand drew from her relationship with her son for the new movie, recalling the ups and downs of child rearing as she spoke to reporters in Beverly Hills earlier this month.

“Mothers develop guilt trips,” she said. “When I was working a lot I’d feel guilty as a parent that I couldn’t pick up my son every day from school, bake him cookies and that kind of thing. And so I know that feeling. And so you try and compensate and everything they do is great and they sense that guilt, children, and they are going through their own rebellious time and having a famous parent is an odd thing.”

At the age of 70, Streisand was reluctant about getting up early every morning and commuting to work, but the movie’s subject matter was one she related to on a deep level.

“I thought it was an interesting thing to investigate this, trying to be my son’s friend, trying to be a friend versus his mother,” she offered. “When it comes time to really say, ‘You abused me, you disrespected me, you talked back to me, you don’t honor what I say, you won’t take my advice,’ that kind of thing, in terms of this movie, it hit on all those things that I thought I could explore.”

As for working with Rogen, Streisand found him adorable. “I could be his mother,” she laughed. “He took me out of my shell. It was a very loving gesture and it’s about love.  I always say it’s a different kind of love story.”

Midway through the new comedy The Guilt Trip, starring Seth Rogen and Barbra Streisand as a mother and son on a road trip, there’s a scene where they check into a motel and are mistaken for a couple.

A gobsmacked Rogen attempts to explain that Streisand is his mother, but the pair seem to be only superficially related in this uninspired laundry list of overbearing-mother cliches.

In her first starring role since 1996’s The Mirror Has Two Faces, Streisand plays Joyce Brewster, a New Jersey widow whose two remaining passions in life are her son Andy (Rogen) and M&M’s in bed.

Andy, meanwhile, is a ‘brilliant’ organic chemist who has developed a new environmentally safe cleaning fluid which he flogs to wholesalers as they travel from state to state.

Having tracked down Joyce’s onetime lover from before her marriage, Andy intends to reunite them, inviting his mother to join him on a cross-country journey without telling her his romantic plans for her.

Along the way, their car breaks down, forcing them to seek refuge in a topless bar, bicker, reminisce, get into a barroom brawl, and eventually, make Streisand engulf four pounds of steak in under an hour for $100.

In another scene, they stop by the home of Rogen’s high school sweetheart, now married, to reminisce as her husband (Colin Hanks) looks on wistfully. What’s meant to be a bittersweet moment plays like a pale facsimile of human emotion in a way that characterizes the entire movie.

Rogen and Streisand share adequate chemistry but seldom seem like the real deal in choreographer-turned-director Anne Fletcher’s fourth movie. Fletcher made her breakthrough with the tolerable Step Up, followed by the toxic rom-com 27 Dresses. She redeemed herself a little with The Proposal, but has hit a plateau of mediocrity with The Guilt Trip.

Under her direction, Streisand and Rogen look like a pair of actors saying jokes written for them by a comedy think tank, running through scenarios with the emotional veracity of an eighties sitcom.

As Joyce needles her son from stop to stop, and Andy ineptly stumbles through business meetings, the audience is meant to identify with the cutely dysfunctional couple. They say movies mirror real-life, but a mirror at least gives the impression of three dimensions, which cannot be said of The Guilt Trip.

In interviews, screenwriter Dan Fogelman said the script was inspired by his own relationship with his mother. His concept and content are strong enough, but poor execution yields wafer-thin plotting and one-dimensional characterizations. As it is, betting on the star wattage of 70-year-old Streisand and the goofy grin of the decidedly limited Seth Rogen might be enough for a poster, but not a whole movie.

The film climaxes as they reach San Francisco and run smack dab into a plot twist that is obvious from its first act set up. This leads to a lachrymose heart-to-heart unrelated to the plot twist but, being the end of the movie, heart strings must be tugged.

The Guilt Trip isn’t the worst movie of the month (that would be Parental Guidance) and in fact it is a pleasure to see Streisand return to a lead role. She is a bonifide star who has delivered legendary performances in classics like Funny Girl, Hello Dolly! and The Way We Were. In The Guilt Trip she generates a nostalgic charm, no matter how lackluster the material.

Rogen has an everyman quality and strong comedic timing, but his acting skills are minimal, leaving him uncomfortable-looking when he’s called upon to do anything other than be himself.

Don’t be fooled by the poster: The Guilt Trip might be pitched to young and old alike, but while Streisand fans will get their money’s worth, Rogen fans will be left wondering why they took this particular journey.

The last 24 hours have been jam-packed with suits galore.

In London, England, father-to-be Prince William put on a double-breasted suit and bow tie for the premiere of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey. The 30-year-old royal attended the event without pregnant wife Kate Middleton, who is currently expecting the couple’s first child.

Cate Blanchett, Sir Ian McKellan, Martin Freeman and the film’s stars also glammed up for the big premiere, which was held at the legendary Odeon Leicester Square.

Stateside, Leonardo DiCaprio and Seth Rogen also put on their best suits for their respective movie premieres on opposite coasts.

DiCaprio celebrated the release of his new film Django Unchained in New York City, while Rogen promoted his new road trip comedy The Guilt Trip in Westwood, Calif.

Rogen’s co-star Barbra Streisand also joined in on the suit trend, donning a pantsuit for the red carpet affair. In the film, the 70-year-old superstar plays Rogen’s mother as the two embark on a cross-country road trip.

In non-red carpet sightings, First Lady Michelle Obama was spotted at a Toys for Tots event in Washington, D.C.

Over in Brentwood, Calif., Ben Affleck kept warm with a stylish long grey coat while out on a coffee run with his daughter Seraphina.

Congratulations are in order for 50/50 funnyman Seth Rogen and his longtime girlfriend, Lauren Miller. Us Weekly reports that the two wed in a traditional Jewish ceremony over the weekend in Sonoma, California.

It’s nice to see that the two walked down the aisle after Rogen’s less-than-normal proposal! Last November, he revealed on Conan that he proposed to Miller while she was topless!

She was in our closet changing, and she was literally only in her underpants, and her boobs were out. I’d already kind of started, and I was like ‘Oh man, her boobs are out! That’s not part of the plan!’ I didn’t picture it like this, and I know she didn’t picture it like this. No little girl is like ‘It’ll happen in a closet with my t**s out.’

But, what’s a wedding without the groom’s usual cohorts in attendance? Jonah Hill, Paul Rudd, Craig Robinson, Judd Apatow and Leslie Mann we’re all present to witness the nuptials.

With all these class clowns at the wedding, it’s a wonder how anyone could hold back the chuckles. A source reveals to weekly mag that “the wedding was more laughs than anything else” and that “it was nonstop fun!”

Rogen’s latest flick 50/50 has garnered rave reviews, but was only able to squeak out $8.8 million and a fourth place debut at this weekend’s box office.

In What’s Your Number?, Ally (Faris) enlists the help of her neighbor, Colin (Evans), to find her true love by revisiting the last 20 men she had relationships with. Will she find The One?

Both films have created a big buzz for movie-goers, making it hard to choose only one to watch between the two.

However, let’s not forget another film being released today — Dream House! Rachel Weisz, Daniel Craig and Naomi Watts star in the horror film, in which strange things begin happening to a couple (Craig and Weisz) who moves into a new home with their two daughters. Will (Craig) discovers that a family was murdered in the house and enlists the help of Ann (Watts) to uncover the truth about the horrifying events.

Hoda Kotb hit the 50/50 red carpet Monday night in NYC following the film’s leading man Seth Rogen filling in for Kathie Lee Gifford on hosting duties for the TODAY show earlier that day. 

Celebuzz got a chance to chat with the morning show host who wanted to “go on the record” about how she really felt about Seth standing in for Kathie. “Oh my God! First of all, he’s crazy,” she said excitedly. “I wanna go on record and explain that he’s a nut bag. There’s no one crazier than Seth.” 

As for who’s crazier, Seth or Hoda’s quirky cohost Kathie Lee, she disclosed to Celebuzz: 

“Who’s crazier? That’s not easy. KLG (Kathie Lee Gifford) has got to be crazier.”

While on TODAY on Monday, Seth and Hoda battled it out in a trivia game show where the actor ended up winning. The lovable star of The Green Hornet, Seth Rogen, revealed to MTV that his character Britt Reid, the hotel room trashing son of a Los Angeles media mogul who becomes the Green Hornet superhero, was inspired by Paris Hilton and her heiress antics.

“We kind of based him off a male Paris Hilton, as embarrassing as that is to say,” Rogen said. “That is what we looked at — those people who are the sons or daughters of people who have accomplished great things. We probably give them a little more credit than they’ve gotten in the past, and we explore why they’re such jerks and why they act out. Maybe it’s because they didn’t get the attention they wanted.”

In the film, Reid’s constant, public shenanigans bring on the disapproval of his successful father, who, more than anything, is embarrassed by his son all over town. Ultimately, it’s his desire to please his father that causes his transformation into a do-gooder.

“We wanted to start out with a guy who was the last guy you would ever expect to be a superhero and slowly make that guy a hero instead of starting with a guy who’s already pretty morally centered, just doesn’t quite have the idea yet.”

Could this movie be a blueprint for Paris Hilton’s own metamorphosis into a masked crime fighter?

“She’s going to become a superhero,” Rogen joked. “I hope so.”

With one week to go before Seth Rogen‘s superhero movie The Green Hornet takes theaters by storm, the actor posed for a few photographs with his character’s juiced up car, The Black Beauty.

On Friday, Rogen divulged to radio personality Howard Stern that he is not signing a prenup before marrying Lauren Miller, a relatively unknown actress who had small roles in his movies Superbad, Zack and Miri, and Observe and Report. “Marriage can be expensive,” Rogen responded after Stern insisted he come to his senses, “and if I lose millions then it’ll be the best millions I’ve spent.”

A new trailer for Rogen’s upcoming superhero movie The Green Hornet (out January 14, 2011) has ben released, this time showcasing the titular crime fighter’s relationship with his sidekick Kato—oh, and lots of powerful weaponry.

The movie stars Rogen as playboy-turned-dogooder Britt Reid, who turns to a life of fighting crime after his publishing-mogul father passes away. Jay Chou plays the role of Kato, who has previously been portrayed by martial-arts legend Bruce Lee.

During last night’s debut of Conan on TBS, the show’s first guest Seth Rogen was in danger of crossing the can’t-say-this-on-TV line while explaining the less-than-conventional way he proposed to actress Lauren Miller. 

“She was in our closet changing, and she was literally only in her underpants, and her boobs were out,” he noted to Conan. “I’d already kind of started, and I was like ‘Oh man, her boobs are out! That’s not part of the plan!’ I didn’t picture it like this, and I know she didn’t picture it like this. No little girl is like ‘It’ll happen in a closet with my t**s out.’” The actor added, “I figured the only appropriate thing was to place the ring on her nipple.”

And despite not matching fairy tale standards, Miller said yes.

Comedian Will Ferrell stands alone atop Forbes annual list of Hollywood’s most overpaid actors for the second time, largely as a result of his 2009 flop Land of the Lost.

That film cost $100 million to make but only returned $69 million at the global box office. On average, for every $1 Ferrell was paid last year, his films returned only $3.35. Ferrell fans should fear not, however, as the SNL alum’s moderate hit The Other Guys returned $160 million on a $100 million budget, which is more than enough to ensure the A-lister will maintain his status. It was not counted in this year’s tally, like all films released after June 1. Since 2005, the actor has reportedly averaged $20 million per film.

By comparison, Eddie Murphy owes his #2 position to the public’s grim reception of Meet Dave and Imagine That, the latter of which only sold $22 million in tickets globally. His only saving grace is a big one, the tremendously successful Shrek series. 

Comedians account for six of the top ten most overpaid actors, with the reasoning being that comedies do not translate well in overseas markets. Ferrell’s The Other Guys raised $119 million in the states, similar to Angelina Jolie‘s film Salt, which made $118 million domestically. The difference? $41 million and $173 million abroad, respectively.
