The Super Bowl seems destined to dominate the entertainment landscape this week, but for those folks who aren’t fans of football, there are other options.

Specifically, home entertainment is starting to get interesting again after a few weeks in which only catalogue titles or independent releases provided the few bright spots for Blu-ray collectors.

Celebuzz has assembled a solid roundup of titles, which includes a comedy, a family film and not one or two but three horror movies. Take a look at our picks for the week below.

The Awakening (Universal Studios Home Entertainment)

The One-Liner: Rebecca Hall stars in this intimate thriller about a “hoax exposer” who finds more than she bargains for after the death of a child at a boarding school is blamed on a ghost.

Picture Perfect? Although the film looks generally gloomy – a sort of overcast, greying sheen – that’s intentional, and the high-definition transfer preserves said look with as much vividness and details as one can get through the filters originally used to shoot it.

What Else Is There? Deleted scenes, a collection of featurettes and an interview with director and co-writer Nick Murphy give viewers an opportunity to find out how the filmmakers brought the ghost story to life, so to speak.

How Badly Do I Want It? A modestly effective little scarefest, this failed to make too many waves last year during its release, but it’s worth checking out – at least via a rental – if you’re a fan of the genre.

Citadel (New Video)

The One-Liner: This SXSW Midnighters Audience Award winner follows an agoraphobe who reluctantly ventures into a towerlike apartment complex to save his family from a group of “possibly supernatural” thugs.

Picture Perfect? Shot sometimes in extreme darkness but generally using minimal lighting, the film is as once effectively creepy on home video and disappointingly difficult to view, since detail and clarity are often undermined by shadow-shrouded imagery.

What Else Is There? B-roll footage, cast and crew interviews and a making-of featurette reveal the process of making this festival-circuit charmer.

How Badly Do I Want It? Another horror film that functions best as alternative programming to studio fare, it’s worth checking out via rental, but it doesn’t seem to have quite enough intensity or uniqueness to make it the sort of “favorite” film buffs want to watch over and over.

Hotel Transylvania (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment)

The One-Liner: Clone Wars director Genndy Tartakovsky tackles this monster mash-up about a resort where iconic horror characters shack up without fear of being found out by regular folks.

Picture Perfect? In 2- or 3D, this is a gorgeous, vividly-rendered movie, offering spectacular clarity and color that is sure to keep both kids and parents captivated.

What Else Is There? The mini-movie Goodnight Mr. Foot, directed and animated by Tartakovsky, is sure to entertain kids, while deleted scenes and a filmmaker’s commentary offer deeper insights into the movie for their grown-up counterparts.

How Badly Do I Want It? As a solid, family-friendly addition to anyone’s home video library, Hotel Transylvania is a pretty terrific choice, so it might be worth buying.

Paranormal Activity 4: Unrated (Paramount Home Entertainment)

The One-Liner: The impossibly successful found-footage horror series delivers another installment, finally picking up at the end of the timeline set up in the first three films – even though it doesn’t quite pay them off.

Picture Perfect? Although each installment was created on the cheap, the images – supposedly photographed on consumer-grade webcams and cell phones – look solid and clear, except when they’re supposed to be disorientingly amateurish.

What Else Is There? In addition to an unrated cut of the movie, the disc features almost 30 minutes of deleted scenes that the studio gussied up to look like additional “discovered footage,” but yet again, there’s nothing really chronicling the process of putting these films together, which always happens by committee and an ongoing process of trail and error.

How Badly Do I Want It? Definitely the slightest in the series, Paranormal 4 is a disappointment in comparison to its predecessors, but it guarantees several effective scares, making it a worthy rental but not a “necessary” addition to anyone’s Blu-ray collection.

Seven Psychopaths (Sony Pictures Home Entertainment)

The One-Liner: In Bruges writer-director Martin McDonagh returns with this oddball comedy about a group of crooks and the kidnapped dog that comes between them.

Picture Perfect: A remarkably great transfer offers saturated, vivid images that never sacrifice texture or clarity.

What Else Is There? With the exception of Seven Psychocats, a parody of the trailer  featuring a collection of felines in the actors’ roles, the extras are at best superficially insightful, offering conversations with the cast and crew about the characters and locations.

How Badly Do I Want It? Depending on your appetite for these irreverent, violent comedies, McDonagh’s latest might be a must-see movie for you, but it’s at least worth a rental.

After eviscerating its competition with an opening-weekend haul of $49.5 million, Taken 2 continues to pummel all comers in its second weekend with another $21.8 million in receipts.

Meanwhile, Ben Affleck’s third outing as a director, Argo, squeaked into the No. 2 spot with an impressive $19.5 million.

Hotel Transylvania, on the other hand, dropped to No. 4 with a box office take of $17.2 million, bringing its cumulative earnings to more than $102 million in just three weeks.

What scary surprise slid into Number Three?

Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill’s Sinister opened at No. 3 with just more than $18 million, which recouped its reportedly $3 million price tag and then some.

No. 5 was also a new release: Kevin James’ Here Comes the Boom. The comedic MMA movie took in $11.8 million along with its wealth of negative reviews.

Of the other two high-profile films opening last weekend, Seven Psychopaths and Atlas Shrugged: Part II, only the former penetrated the Top 10, slipping past Perks of Being a Wallflower to take home $4.1 million in the No. 9 spot.

Atlas Shrugged, on the other hand, landed at No. 11, which is actually mildly impressive given the fact that it opened only on a few more than 1,000 screens, which was less than half of the number of screens of almost all of its competition.

Martin McDonagh has ‘it.’

After an award-winning career writing for the stage, his first movie, In Bruge, won a Golden Globe for Colin Farrell and earned McDonagh an Oscar nod for Best Original Screenplay.

With his latest movie, Seven Psychopaths, McDonagh actually tops In Bruges – no easy feat considering that it’s predecessor is also one of 2008’s most highly acclaimed films.

Working in the same Grand Guignol style that has come to characterize plays like A Behanding in Spokane and The Lieutenant of Inishmore, McDonagh conjures a broad and witty comedy that turns in on itself as a meta-commentary on hip gangster movies.

What’s ‘Seven Psychopaths’ about?

Wannabe screenwriter Ray, (Colin Farrell) tells his unhinged friend Billy (Sam Rockwell) he doesn’t want to write “just another movie about guys with guns in their hands.” He wants his movie to be much more. Exactly what, however, he hasn’t a clue. What he does have is a title: Seven Psychopaths.

Intent on collaborating with Ray, Billy takes out an ad in the newspaper seeking psychopaths who are willing to share their stories.

Harry Dean Stanton is the Quaker psychopath, not to be outdone by a Buddhist Vietnamese psychopath played by Long Nguyen.

Tom Waits, stroking a pet bunny, plays a psychopathic hunter of psychopaths, while Woody Harrelson is Charlie the gangster, a psychopath obsessed with his little dog Bonny, (not a psychopath), a Shih-Tzu.

Bonny has been abducted by Hans (Christopher Walken) a psychopath at the end of his rope who runs a small-time operation kidnapping house pets and returning them for reward money.

Charlie would rather see his beautiful girlfriend dead than lose his beloved dog Bonny, and he is about to move Heaven and Earth to save her.

While it may sound confusing and maybe too smart for its own good, Seven Psychopathsunspools with clever ease and buffoonish charm. It is effortlessly brilliant and always accessible but more important, it slavishly satisfies the first rule of comedy – make ‘em laugh.

Energy accumulated in the movie’s first hour is slightly dissipated when Ray, Billy and Hans reach the desert for the final showdown and McDonagh’s screenplay spins its wheels. But the jokes keep coming, as lively and unexpected as the many plot twists and convolutions that make Seven Psychopaths so distinctive.

McDonagh is a deft director of actors, starting with Farrell as Ray, the alcoholic writer wannabe. For once, Farrell embodies the most normal character in the bunch. He underplays opposite a manic Rockwell, but still generates plenty of laughs as he wrestles with his demons and the real-life crazies popping up all around him.

Walken and Rockwell costarred in the Broadway production of McDonagh’s A Behanding in Spokane, and together they bring to the screen a well-honed anarchic energy. Despite their impeccable work over the years, both actors deliver performances that stand among their best.

Walken has carved an indelible niche for himself playing creepy characters in dozens of movies going back to an early cameo as Annie Hall’s suicidal brother, Duane.

In Seven Psychopaths he is strange, unbalanced and again suicidal after the loss of his wife. His performance is energized partly by the fact that it’s Walken playing Walken in the same way Seven Psychopaths is a hip gangster movie about hip gangster movies.

The old adage says, “Comedy is hard, dying is easy.” Comedies, especially ones like Seven Psychopaths, are seldom mentioned at Oscar time and almost never win. Despite how difficult they are to make, good comedies look easy, which makes them easier to dismiss. If you’re smart you won’t dismiss Seven Psychopaths. Clever, original and unpredictable, it is one of the year’s funniest movies.

Aspiring filmmakers will be flocking to the box office this weekend as not one, but two new releases revolves around movie-making. Well, sort of.

Based on true events, Ben Affleck’s Argo revolves a CIA agent who must disguise himself as a Canadian filmmaker in order to slip into Iran during the Iranian Revolution and rescue six American hostages. During the ordeal, the agent (Affleck) drums up a dummy film production company and sci-fi movie in order to fool those who are guarding the borders.

How does ‘Seven Psychopaths’ fit into movie-making?

Starring Sam Rockwell, Christopher Walken and Woody Harrelson, Seven Psychopaths follows an aspiring screenwriter who accidentally finds himself in the crosshairs of a local mob boss when his friends accidentally kidnaps the kingpin’s beloved shih tzu. Stuck on getting a story out, writer (Rockwell) then starts documenting their adventures as a part of his movie.

Christopher Walken, Colin Farrell and Sam Rockwell are such talented actors that they can make any dialogue sound good — even the unscripted musings of the Thompson clan of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo fame.

That’s the lesson of this video from ScreenJunkies.com, which took advantage of an interview with the three stars, who were promoting their dark comedy Seven Psychopaths, to get them to reenact some of the TLC reality show’s sparkling repartee.

In the video, Rockwell reads the part of seven-year-old beauty pageant regular Alana “Honey Boo Boo” Thompson; Farrell reads her sister Jessica “Chubbs” Shannon, and Walken reads mama June Shannon.

Much of the conversation, taken from the show, revolves around the self-styled redneck family’s recipe for “sketti,” which includes a marinara sauce made from ketchup and melted butter. In a further homage to the surprise hit series, ScreenJunkies vlog host Hal Rudnick whips up a batch of the pasta dish himself, and his commentary, which is sometimes hard to make out because he has a mouth full of noodles, is subtitled, just like on Here Comes Honey Boo Boo.

The actors, no doubt tired of being asked the same questions over and over by interviewers during a daylong press session, seemed to relish the chance to do something different. In the video, Rockwell calls the impromptu reading the best interview the trio had done all day.

Of course, the result is just one of many off-kilter, would-be viral videos that have emerged during the run-up to Seven Psychopaths’ release in theaters on Friday, October 12. In another cooking-related video, posted at Funny or Die, Walken roasts a chicken with the help of Law & Order: SVU star Richard Belzer and a couple of blank-faced models who are apparent refugees from a Robert Palmer music video. And another video making the rounds shows the Seven Psychopaths trailer re-enacted by a cast of cats.

If it wasn’t fun enough watching Colin Farrell, Christopher Walken, Sam Rockwell, Woody Harrelson, Olga Kurylenko and Tom Waits play the eponymous septet in Seven Psychopaths, CBS Films has turned the film’s cast into felines.

In a trailer posted Monday, Martin McDonagh’s crime comedy was transformed into internet-sensation-worthy fodder with a clip entitled Seven PsychoCATS, where cats take the place of key cast members.

The film, which opens Friday, follows a team of dognappers who find themselves in trouble after accidentally kidnapping the shih tzu of a local crime lord (Harrelson).

When your character is literally called a psychopath, it’s a dubious honor to be described as “the seemingly normal one.”

Colin Farrell is having one helluva dog day afternoon in the newly released trailer for Seven Psychopaths, the new film from Oscar nominated writer-director Martin McDonagh. 

In the quirky new comedy set to hit theaters on October 12, Farrell plays Marty, a struggling screenwriter who inadvertently becomes entangled in the Los Angeles criminal underworld after his two oddball friends Charlie and Hans (Sam Rockwell and Christopher Walken) steal the beloved Shih Tzu of a local gangster (played by Woody Harrelson).

Farrell steals the dog — but who steals the trailer?

Harrelson, a two-time Oscar nominee for The People vs. Larry Flynt (1997) and The Messenger (2010), looks Oscar-worthy as Charlie, a hardened criminal with a surprising soft spot for his furry-faced pup, and Farrell continues to prove himself as a solid comedic actor, following his memorable role as a difficult boss in last year’s irreverent comedy, Horrible Bosses.

But Oscar-nominated Precious star Gabourey Sidibe steals the trailer from both of them as Sharice, Harrelson’s dog-sitter, whose life is threatened after she loses Charlie’s dog.
