With shows like Girls, Go On and The New Normal, television has hit its all-time high of gay, bisexual and transgender characters.

Hollywood bringing homosexuality into the homes across the country is not altogether new, considering the same-sex themes that played out on the small screen in such still-beloved hits as Will & Grace, Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Six Feet Under.

But in recent years, series have shone a brighter spotlight on same-sex couples, from Grey’s Anatomy‘s wedding lesbian couple Callie Torres and Arizona Robbins to Modern Family‘s child-rearing fathers, Mitchell Pritchett and Cameron Scott Tucker.

While it may not have been any calculated campaign, television has certainly had a hand in bringing gay into the country’s consciousness, raising awareness and even acceptance of homosexuality amongst Americans.

Now the Supreme Court is tackling two cases on the matter of gay marriage: the constitutionality of Proposition 8, the California ballot initiative that bans same-sex marriage, and a challenge to the Defense of Marriage Act, a federal law that defines marriage as the union of a man and woman.

So as the nation awaits a ruling, Celebuzz is taking a look at 10 same-sex TV couples that prove all people deserve the right to wed whomever they please.

The year was 1984. That’s when Carrie Bradshaw, a doe-eyed Connecticut teen who’d always dreamed of the big city, got her first glimpse of Manhattan.

“I have arrived, to the place so many before me have come to live out their dreams,” Bradshaw mused while crossing Brooklyn Bridge, setting her sights on the famous New York City skyline, during the series premiere of The CW’s The Carrie Diaries, a Sex and the City prequel based on Candace Bushnell‘s young-adult series.

“It was the beginning of my Manhattan love story,” she said.

But the Manhattan that AnnaSophia Robb‘s Bradshaw — a reinvention of the beloved SATC character made famous more than a decade ago by Sarah Jessica Parker — falls for is a world away from the concrete jungle of today.

For better or worse, the city that never sleeps has changed over the last three decades — since that fateful day back in 1984 when one Ms. Carrie Bradshaw first fell for the city she came to call home.

Celebuzz remembers what Manhattan was like back then — and how far it has come since.

Twin Towers
Any New Yorker will tell you: The city’s skyline will never be the same after Sept. 11, 2001. When Bradshaw first came to the Big Apple, the landmark Twin Towers of the World Trade Center stood out in lower Manhattan. But the once-tallest buildings in the world came crashing down on 9/11, after Al-Qaeda-affiliated hijackers flew two jets into each tower, resulting in nearly 3,000 deaths. And though The Carrie Diaries’ first episode took place in the shadow of the WTC, the show creators chose not to include the towers.

Call the Police
When baby Bradshaw first stepped into NYC, she had better be thinking safety first. In the late 1980s, crime rates spiked in the Big Apple, as the crack cocaine epidemic hit the city streets. But since 1990, violent crime has continue to decline. Much of that thanks goes to the New York City Police Department, which cracked down on wrongdoings in a heavy-handed way in the 90s. So by the time Bradshaw was settled into her quaint East 73rd Street brownstone apartment, the Upper East Side was safe and sound.

Meat to Manolos
Not even two decades ago, the Meatpacking district (or the Gansevoort Market, as it’s officially known) was the grittiest industrial corner of the city, home to — as the name would suggest — butchers, meat-cutters and factories full of carcass. But by the 1990s, the once-blood-stained streets of the waterside neighborhood turned trendy as high-end eateries, nightlife hotspots, and haute fashion boutiques opened up shop. Sex and the City actually captures the area in transition when Samantha (Kim Cattral) moved to the area and faced off with a few neighborhood prostitutes.

Melting Pot Multiples
Back when high school-aged Bradshaw was merely dreaming of becoming a Manhattan success, New York City was home to just more than 7 million people. But those bustling Time Square streets, Broadway theaters, Park Avenue boutiques, and West Village restaurants became all the more cramped over the years. By 2010, the Big Apple’s population had crossed the 8 million mark, making it a bit harder for Bradshaw to stand out in the most populous city of the United States.

Smoke Signs
Back in 1984, Bradshaw could have lit up in just about every corner of New York City. But that began to change with the first Smoke Free Air Act in 1988, when smoking was banned in public restrooms and taxis. Cigarette aficionados suffered another blow in 2002, when smoking in indoor spaces — including restaurants and bars — was outlawed. And in 2011, that restriction even reached the outdoors, extending to the city’s parks, public beaches and even some pedestrian plazas like Time Square. So nowadays, Sex and the City’s Bradshaw would have new reason to kick her Marlboro Lights to the curb.

The World of Publishing
On the series premiere of The Carrie Diaries, Bradshaw has a chance encounter with famed international fashion editor Larissa Loughton (Freema Agyeman), who takes the bright-eyed Connecticut teen under her wing within the world of Interview magazine, a glossy founded by the late great Andy Warhol during the golden era of print publications. The glamour of it all quickly sweeps young Bradshaw off her feet: the models, the fact-paced photo shoots and, of course, the fierce fashions. Even two decades later, Sex and the City sees Bradshaw penning a weekly column for fictional newspaper, The New York Star, and freelancing for Vogue, or what she terms “Mecca.” But nowadays, the magazine industry is but a bare-bones skeleton of its previous self, mostly stripped of its big budgets, high circulation and mainstream media prowess.

The Underground
The 1980s New York City subways were, well, sub-par: filthy trains, failing tracks, tons of graffiti, too many outlaws and some of the strangest of passengers in the continental United States. But the transit authority seized those 10 years as a chance to clean up the underground system, successfully kicking off the 1990s with (graffiti-free!) stainless steel subway cars and lower crime rates — though those strange riders may be, for better or worse, here to stay.

The Carrie Diaries airs Mondays at 8PM on The CW.

Carrie Bradshaw returns to the small screen, when the Carrie Diaries premieres on the CW on on Jan. 14, starring AnnaSophia Robb as a teenage Bradshaw. We couldn’t be more excited to see the Sex and the City spinoff — and see all the set style.

While the show chronicles a young Carrie, circa the 1980s, you know when it’s Carrie — and former Gossip Girl costume designer Eric Daman is dressing her — the fashion is going to be good.

We talked to Daman to get the scoop on all the fabulous fashion we can expect when Carrie Diaries airs on Monday. Check out our interview — then take a sneak peek at the retro fashion straight from the set.

How are you translating Carrie’s SATC style for her younger self in Carrie Diaries?
ED: The approaches are very different. Keep in mind while “pre”-creating a teenage Carrie, she is still in public school in Connecticut. The Carrie Diaries of course will stay true to her idiosyncratic style by not giving in to pre-determined trends of the era but making her own.  So in that sense there is a similarity, but over all it feels like a very different process.

Tell us what young Carrie’s style is like.
ED: Conceptually, we hope to create an aspirational authentic look, not an overtly kitschy ’80s look. Our young CB’s style will be idiosyncratic, but quieter then the Carrie we already know. She is at an age where she is experimenting, learning and creating her individual unique style. Keeping all of this in mind when conceiving her look, I wanted  to give her a unique point of view mixing colors and patterns, as well as eras.  Mixing obvious ’80s-inspired items with pieces from her “mother’s closet” that feel more ’60s and ’70s with contemporary flair.

Is there a person or experience that helps to inspire Carrie’s love of fashion and personal style?

ED: [On the show] Carrie’s mom has passed recently and her closet becomes a bit of a “Pandora’s box” that inspires Carrie’s style.  She has access to a Narnia of fashion from eras past, she may wear boots that seem as though they are from the ’70s (even though they are current Chloe collection) or printed tops from the ’60s (even though they are Marc by Marc Jacobs).

Carrie has a true fashion evolution the more and more she has contact with NYC.  She has this amazing fashion mentor “Larissa,” the style editor from Interview Magazine that really contributes to Carrie’s blossoming original take on style. (Of course having access to the ’80s Interview fashion closet doesn’t hurt.)

Now, speaking of the ’80s, how are you adapting the trends of that era (some of which make many of us cringe like, ahem, shoulder pads) to create looks that are reflective of the time, yet inspiring to today’s fashion-loving viewers?
ED: I refreshed my ’80s fashion sense (having been a fashion curious teen in the ’80s was an added bonus) by rewatching all of the John Hughes classics, as well as a mix of quiet Connecticut-inspired hometown films like Ordinary People, and of course getting out my high school yearbooks. New York City becomes an important part to her character and style as well, so I poured through Interview magazines from the era, as well as films like Liquid Sky, Slaves of New York and Desperately Seeking Susan. Fortunately, there is a lot of ’80s-inspired fashion trending right now, so keeping an aspirational authenticity to the look is a very realistic concept.

A lot of ’80s fashion wasn’t the cutest or most flattering.  By keeping the shapes and fabrics contemporary, but playing with colors and layers, the look feels very retro-modern and cool. We are working with classic ’80s colors and prints but in modern more slimming shapes and silhouettes — not giant shoulder pads and oversized bulk.

Will Carrie have signature accessories like her name necklace on SATC?

ED: As far as signature accessories go, there’s the personalized “Carrie” bag from Mark Cross and the “C” initial pendant from Alex woo (a prelude to the signature Carrie nameplate).

What are some hallmarks of her closet (like the tutu she wears in the opening credits of SATC)?

ED: The silver sequin Top Shop dress with vintage Rainbow belt, the Autumn Cashmere lime green leopard cardi (tres Carrie B.), the fuchsia party dress with black polka dots that represents her first night out in NYC (a vintage ’80s Scasi original), her neon orange Alice and Olivia pumps.

Has young Carrie discovered her foot fetish and handbag fetish yet?

ED: She hasn’t discovered her shoe and bag fetish just yet, but as the season progresses we will definitely might see that fetish flourish and progress.

Carrie could be pretty daring — and sexy — with her fashion on SATC. How will you be toning down her style to fit a younger Connecticut Carrie?
ED: Our teen Carrie will totally take chances and be a standout style star. The “sexiness” will be replaced by confident, sweet innocence.

How does your work on Carrie Diaries compare to Gossip Girl? Dressing teenage Carrie must be a big change from the high-end designers and of-the-moment looks Blair and Serena wore.
ED: The biggest similarity is the fact that I really wanted to give each character his or her own very personalized style.  As a costume designer, it is really key to help define a character through clothing, and I am lucky enough to be able to, not once but twice, push characters stylistically to really shine and stand on their own through their wardrobe choices.

The biggest difference is that Carrie and her crew are Connecticut suburban teens of mid-level affluence and not uber rich Upper East-siders, running around scheming in the latest high fashions.

What labels will young Carrie be wearing? What are some of your go-to sources for unique clothes and accessories for the show?
ED: The clothing came from a lot of my favorite haunts in NYC: Amarcord, Beacon’s Closet, Ressurrection, Cloak and Screaming Mimi’s for Vintage. I also relied on fast fashion shops like Top Shop and H&M, as well as high-end stores like Saks, to give the look its contemporary “aspirational authenticity” we hoped to develop. Of course, there will be some big-name designers sprinkled in like Marc Jacobs, Chloe, Missoni and Georges Chakra to name a few…

Why were you excited by the opportunity to dress young Carrie? What made this project so appealing to you?
ED: Dressing a young Carrie Bradshaw was at first quite intimidating but ultimately exhilarating. It was very important to keep in mind that she is a young high school student in Connecticut and still figuring out her style. And of course the era plays a huge roll in the over all look.

At last — Sex and the City fans have a new way to get their Carrie Bradshaw fix again.

The Carrie Diaries, starring AnnaSophia Robb as a young Carrie (originally played by Sarah Jessica Parker), will hit the small screen in January, but the cast and media will get a sneak peek at the show’s New York’s premiere Monday.

Based on Candace Bushnell’s book by the same name, The Carrie Diaries centers on a 16-year-old Bradshaw during the ’80s.

We can’t wait to see how Carrie’s fashion — and love life — evolve into the stylish writer we loved in Sex and the City. But in the meantime, we thought we’d take a look back at some of our favorite Carrie Bradshaw fashion moments from the original series.

Though we’re loving young Carrie’s bold ’80s style that Robb has been spotted wearing while filming scenes for The Carrie Diaries New York City recently (take a look at the photos out here), obsessing over adult Carrie’s closet — and many fashion-forward looks — never gets old.

Carrie is the ultimate modern style icon, making brands like Manolo Blahnik and Jimmy Choo household names and inciting shoe fetishes in millions of women across the country.

Sorry, Sex and the City fans, it looks like Miranda Hobbes won’t be back on the big screen — or any screen — any time soon.

Cynthia Nixon, 46, is ready to retire from the series and film franchise for good.

“I think we had a wonderful ride,” the Emmy award-winning actress told The Hollywood Reporter in an interview this week.

“I think it’s fine to let it go.”

The series finale of SATC aired on HBO in February 2004, after six seasons. Nixon reunited with Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall and Kristin Davis for the first movie in 2008, and again in 2010.

Nixon isn’t the first ‘SATC’ alum to publicly say ‘no thanks’ to a third installment.

In August, Mr. Big himself, Chris Noth, told Celebuzz that he had little hope for Sex and the City 3.

“I think it’s kind of over . . . I don’t think anyone else in the crowd wants to do it. You get the feeling we did everything we could with it. Who knows, though,” he said.

Meanwhile, lifelong fans of the show can look forward to The Carrie Diaries, a prequel series starring AnnaSophia Robb as a young Carrie Bradshaw.

The CW show is set to premiere in January.

Haters of Sex and the City 2, you have got your wish.

The Sex and the City movies are going home and taking their ball with them.

“I think it’s kind of over,” Chris Noth told Celebuzz at Wednesday’s Juke Joint party in Hollywood, to benefit disaster relief organization Aid Still Required.

“I don’t know — I haven’t heard anything, so I feel like it’s over. I’m kind of a cynic,” he added.

What else did Noth say about a third ‘Sex and the City’ movie?

And, Noth, who played perhaps Carrie Bradshaw’s (Sarah Jessica Parker) most famous paramour as Mr. Big in the Sex and the City TV series and two movies, says he’s not alone in his feelings about a three-quel.

“I don’t think anyone else in the crowd wants to do it,” says Noth. “You get the feeling we did everything we could with it. Who knows, though … It depends.”

What has been discussed — and partially filmed — is a TV series for The CW billed as a Sex and the City prequel, The Carrie Diaries, which is slated for a January 2013 premiere date. AnnaSophia Robb (Soul Surfer) stars, and Gossip Girl TV developer Josh Schwartz is handling the creative reins.

Noth has long since moved in on his TV career from the hit HBO show — now playing a philandering, formerly jailed aspiring politician running against his estranged wife, played by Julianna Margulies, on this season of The Good Wife. Noth has had a recurring role on the show since its first season.

“We’ve done four episodes [so far],” Noth said. “I’m running for governor. [It] should be an interesting race. It wiIl be going on around the same time that is the one that keeps us all on our toes.”

He says of Margulies’ scorned spouse character, Alicia Florrick, “Right now, we’re on a friendship basis. We’re seeing where it’s going to go. I think my character hurt her pretty bad. So we’re trying to figure out a way how to make it work with the children. Very adult and mature.”

Speaking of being on their toes — the cast of The Good Wife is keeping an eye out for falling objects. Star Kristen Chenoweth was injured in July while filming the show when a gust of wind knocked a piece of equipment over her head.

She has been off the show since. Wearing a neck brace, Chenoweth tweeted a picture of herself this week with friend Kathy Griffin.

On Monday, Chenoweth issued a statement saying she was dropping out of the show because of her injuries.

“It is with deep regret to inform everyone that due to my injuries, I am unable to return to The Good Wife. [I’m] getting better slowly, and thank you everyone for your concern.”

Said Noth, “I have already had scenes with her. She’s doing better, yes.”

Noth was nominated for a 2012 Golden Globe for his role as former state attorney Peter Florrick in The Good Wife, which was executive-produced by movie director Tony Scott, who committed suicide last Saturday at age 68.

When asked about Scott’s passing on Wednesday, Noth expressed shock — and acknowledged he hadn’t known Scott.

“It’s terrible,” Noth said. “I never knew him, and I never met him really.”

It’s official. Sarah Jessica Parker is no longer the only Carrie Bradshaw to hit TV. AnnaSophia Robb, best known for her role in Soul Surfer, has been cast to play the younger Sex and the City character in The CW TV series titled The Carrie Diaries, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Before landing this coveted role, AnnaSophia also starred as Violet in the 2005 flick Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

The Carrie Diaries begins during Carrie’s senior year of high school as the character starts to ask her first questions about love, sex, friendship and family while in Manhattan. The show will have large shoes to fill but breathe easy because THR reports that SATC scribe/co-producer Amy B. Harris will adapt the book and act as a show runner.

The highly anticipated prequel will also be executive produced by Gossip Girl and Hart of Dixie duo Josh Schwartz, Stephanie Savage among others.

After it was announced Wednesday that The CW network had picked up a Sex and The City prequel, we here at Celebuzz got to thinking about who should play the renowned Miss Carrie Bradshaw (the younger edition).

We asked you, the readers, to help us out with which young Hollywood starlet has got the acting chops to reprise Carrie pre her fabulous friendships with Miranda, Charlotte and Samantha. Talks of a Sex and the City prequel have been fraught with skepticism and conflicting reports from the iconic series’ stars, and the London Daily Mail continues to fuel those rumors. 

A third Sex and the City film is still reportedly in the works, and, according to the British publication, brand new faces are to play Carrie and crew before their many Manolos, martinis and marriages! The project is reportedly to be based on author Candace Bushnell’s more recent novels, The Carrie Diaries and Summer and the City, which track Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte during their teenage years and early twenties.

However, despite Mail’s report that Selena Gomez, Blake Lively, Emma Roberts and Elizabeth Olsen are on board, their reps are singing a different tune. Gossip Cop reports that reps for both Blake and Emma have denied the casting claims. However, it’s still fun to to consider. Although many avid SATC fans have been adamant that no one could replace Sarah Jessica Parker as Carrie Bradshaw, there has been much speculation about which young actress would be chosen to reprise the role. Newcomer Elizabeth Olsen, younger sister of the Olsen twins, is rumored to be the frontrunner for the part.

Having already proven she can play a strong, sexy and controversial New Yorker on her TV show Gossip Girl, Blake Lively is a great choice to play the young Samantha Jones. Disney queen Selena Gomez and the talented Emma Roberts are also rumored to be the current preferences to play Charlotte York and Miranda Hobbes in the prequel.

Hollywood may be honoring its best and brightest tonight at the Oscars but there is another, less-glittery award show this weekend that has actors and actress running for the hills: The Razzies.

Jackson Rathbone, M. Night Shyamalan and the ladies from Sex and the City were all the big “winners” at Saturday night’s Golden Raspberry Awards (more commonly known as the Razzies) which honors the “worst” films and actors of the past year.

Unlike the Oscars, celebrities are often not present to accept their Golden Raspberry and this year’s award show was no different. Hey, can you really blame celebs for not wanting to honor their “worst” performances?

Is this the end of seeing Kim Cattrall nude?

It is if she has anything to do with it. The Sex and the City star may have risen to fame for playing Samantha Jones, a character who is quick to take off her clothes, but now Kim is saying that she will no longer remove her clothes on film. From Celebslam:

When I turned 50, I decided that I didn’t want to be photographed nude anymore, so you don’t really see me nude [in Sex and the City 2] you see me doing maybe a physical, a sexual act, but there’s no part of my body that is exposed.

While some people will be sad to hear that the stunning 53-year-old actress is leaving the world of nude scenes, they may be comforted with the fact that the public has seen Kim nude roughly 5,000 times.

All the stars were in New York City for the premiere of Sex and the City 2, a serious documentary about modern feminism and consumer culture–no, just kidding! It’s a fun movie about gal pals, fashion, and romance.

Sarah Jessica Parker, Kristen Davis, Cynthia Nixon, and Kim Cattrall all put on stunning gowns and strutted their stuff down the red, er, blue carpet.

Unfortunately, not every celebrity in attendance was having so many fashion FTWs, Liza Minnelli walked the carpet wearing a pantsuit made out of what looked like transparent fish skins.

Sex and the City actress Sarah Jessica Parker tells E! News that we “don’t want to see [her] topless.” Oh, really? Well, now you’ve got us all curious, Sarah.

Sarah spoke with E! News reporter Marc Malkin about the fact that the public will never see the 45-year-old actress in the buff.

But what about the fact that her SATC co-stars seem very comfortable about showing their boobs on screen?

From E! Online:

Maybe they’re more equipped to do so [...]and it’s all been voluntary. There was never any pressure. Never once. It’s too progressive of a community here to have anyone pressured into doing that.

Okay, we get that maybe SJP is a wee bit shy when it comes to stripping in front of the whole world, but why does she assume that the public wouldn’t be interested in seeing her nude? What is she hiding under there? A cat?

We guess we won’t be seeing any Carrie breasts in the upcoming Sex and the City 2 movie.

Sex and the City star Cynthia Nixon may have shocked a lot of people when she came out as a lesbian with girlfriend Christine Marinoni but apparently Cynthia had to battle her publicist in order to come out publicly.

Cynthia tells The Advocate that she hired her first publicist to help her deal with all the questions that were coming up about her and Christine, but she was upset when the publicist told her to not come out and not address the rumors.

He was a very nice man who I won’t name, but he does have a number of clients who are closeted,’ she said, adding that the publicist insisted they kill all rumors and deny Nixon was dating a woman. ‘He just kept saying, “It’s your life, and it’s private, and that’s it.” And we kept asking, “That’s the whole thing? We never move past that? We’re at the playground with the kids, and pictures are taken of us, and we say, ‘No, she’s my friend?’”

Apparently, Cynthia quickly fired that publicist and moved on to openly gay power publicist Kelly Bush, who told Cynthia just to address the gay rumors head on.

Cynthia also talked with the magazine about her relationship with Christine and described her much more butch-looking girlfriend as “a man with boobs.” However, Cynthia described herself as the more butch one of the relationship and admitted that Christine liked more stereotypically feminine things like fashion more than Cynthia.

Even more shocking? Cynthia tells the magazine that she isn’t a natural redhead! Gee, you think you know a person.

• Naomi Campbell told Oprah that she doesn’t only date rich men and that she liked dating strong men who boss her around. Oh, also, apparently today is opposite day in Naomi-land. (PopEater)

• Kristen Davis says that she never felt pressured at Sex and the City to lose weight or look a certain way. Well, Kristen, that might have something to do with the fact that you ar drop-dead gorgeous. (Wonderwall)

• Our boyfriend, James Franco, says that he loves school. Now, if only he loved walking around in the nude. (Huffington Post)

Sarah Jessica Parker, beautiful and wealthy celebrity, is just like you! Or, at least that is what the people over at Vogue would like us to believe.

Sarah gave an interview with the fashion magazine for their May issue and talked about her simple, folksy life, living in a beautiful, multi-million dollar town house in New York City. From the magazine:

We painted our patio furniture ourselves…. I make my children’s food myself. We put together their high chairs ourselves; we do a lot ourselves! We do our own grocery shopping, we go to the market ourselves, you know? I do my laundry.

Wow, Sarah can shop, cook and do menial tasks all by herself? She sounds like a normal human being! Why are we supposed to still be shocked by celebrity admissions that they can do basic tasks?
