Tony Scott’s high-flying action classic Top Gun is getting a 3D release on theatrical screens and home video this week, which was originally intended to pave the way for a Top Gun sequel before Scott’s tragic death last year. Fans of 3D were no doubt excited for this bit of three-dimensional nostalgia, which now feels more like a kind of cinematic appetizer for the re-release of Steven Spielberg’s jaw-dropper Jurassic Park later this year.

Now that Hollywood is starting to turn away from transforming any and every upcoming blockbuster into a bad ass 3D experience starting to fizzle out, studios and filmmakers are starting to look at the technology on a film-by-film basis. Specifically, industry insiders are aiming their dimensionalization wand at movies that makes the most sense for the format, both past and present.

With the home video market now opening up its eyes to the option of releasing films in 3D — as Fox did last year with I, Robot– Celebuzz has assembled a wish list of classic titles that would look amazing if transformed using the technology.

Admittedly, our selections include a lot of films featuring complex visuals and elaborate production design — all of which has looked terrific in more recent 3D projects. But Celebuzz went all of the way back to 1961 for the earliest film on our list, and we include a real cross-section of great movies whose fans would flip out at the chance to fall into their world.

Hollywood’s latest attempt to find a Twilight-level success just scored a major casting coup. Oscar-winner Kate Winslet is working on a deal now to star in the adaptation of YA novel Divergent. Winslet will join The Descendants’ Shailene Woodley in the film, which centers on Woodley’s character, a teenager forced to compete in a ritual that divides her family. No word yet on who the Titanic star will play in the March 21, 2014 release. [Variety]

Speaking of Twilight, Breaking Dawn – Part 2 actress Dakota Fanning is set to star in the upcoming Errol Flynn biopic, The Last of Robin Hood.

Deadline reported on Thursday that Fanning will play Beverly Aadland, Flynn’s teenage girlfriend, who stayed at the late actor’s bedside during his final years. Kevin Kline will play Flynn in the movie, which is ramping up for a February 2013 start date. [Deadline]

While nothing can beat Thursday’s news of J.J. Abrams directing the next Star Wars movie, another popular fanboy property is also making waves. According to reports, Warner Bros. superhero team-up movie, Justice League, will feature the following line-up of DC characters: Superman, Batman, Wonder Woman, The Flash and Green Lantern. Warners is keeping story details under lock and key, but is expected to settle on a director soon. [Latino Review]

Robert Downey, Jr. is apparently out of director Paul Thomas Anderson’s next film, and Joaquin Phoenix is in. The director and star of The Master will reteam for Inherent Vice, Anderson’s adaptation of the Thomas Pynchon novel. Anderson’s script, like the book, centers on a pot-smoking detective (Phoenix) struggling to solve a kidnapping in 1970 Los Angeles. The last time the two worked together, Phoenix scored an Oscar nomination for Best Actor for The Master. We can’t wait to see what will happen this time around. [The Hollywood Reporter]

That Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sequel no one has really talked about appears to be finally happening. The Weinstein Company is aiming for a May start date on the sequel to Ang Lee’s Oscar-winning 2000 film, which will be based on the same book series that gave us Dragon. Young Guns writer John Fusco wrote the script, and Ronny Yu (The Bride of Chucky) is circling the director’s chair. (And that’s how you kill both this movie and our excitement for it.) [Deadline]

If the original trailer for 1978′s Superman made you believe a man could fly, the new trailer for Zack Snyder‘s Man of Steel will make you believe that that man can fly and kick lots of ass.

A new trailer for Warner Bros. new Superman reboot, produced by The Dark Knight‘s Christopher Nolan and starring Henry Cavill, has arrived, complete with death rays, burning cities, caped figures and soaring superheroes. Also: Kevin Costner. How good is it? Read on to find out…

In addition to the film’s epic scope, the trailer definitely drives home Snyder’s grounded and gritty take on Superman, seemingly going a very Batman Begins route – especially in terms of exploring young Clark Kent’s relationship with his parents, Jonathan (Costner) and Martha (Diane Lane).

Unlike previous Superman movies, the Kents seem to play a more prominent role than usual, one that casts them in a darker-than-expected light when dealing with their adopted son and his powers. Case in point: Following a scene in the trailer where Clark uses his powers to save a school bus full of kids from drowning, Jonathan confronts Clark about the young passenger who witnessed Clark’s heroics.

“Should I have just let him die?!” Young Clark asks.

“…Maybe,” Jonathan grimly replies.

Awards season is officially in full swing. The New York Film Critics named Zero Dark Thirty Best Film of the year and Kathryn Bigelow as Best Director. Pacific Rim director Guillermo Del Toro has settled on his next film, months before his current one is released. Del Toro will make the haunted house horror film Crimson Peak for Legendary Pictures, and Lucinda Coxon has been hired to rewrite the screenplay co-written by Del Toro and Matthew Robbins. Yes, Jack Reacher and Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol producer David Ellison is attached to produce and finance the next Terminator movie. But no, that doesn’t mean his frequent collaborator Tom Cruise will appear in the film. Ellison’s Skydance Pictures will partner with his sister, Megan Ellison (Zero Dark Thirty) to bring the long-gestating fifth chapter in the Terminator series to the big screen. [Deadline]

Ted writer-director Seth MacFarlane has set western comedy A Million Ways to Die in the West as his next film. The Family Guy creator will direct and star in the film, co-written by Ted scribes Alec Sulkin and Wellesley Wild. Million Ways is said to be in the vein of Mel Brooks’ comedy, Blazing Saddles. Looks like kryptonite isn’t the only thing stopping Superman.

As seen in the Man of Steel‘s latest poster, Henry Cavill‘s superhero alter-ego is donning a questionable addition to his blue suit and red cape — a pair of handcuffs, and he’s being led away by several intimidating soldiers.

Along with possible casting rumors coming to surface, the recent buzz has raised questions about Superman’s destiny in the upcoming reboot, which hits theaters on June 14, 2013.

But fans might be getting some answers very soon: the official, full-length trailer of Man of Steel will be featured during the Dec. 14 release of director Peter Jackson’s highly anticipated fantasy film, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Fans of The Hunger Games will have to wait till next November for the sequel, Catching Fire, to hit theaters, but star Josh Hutcherson recently spilled some production details to tide fans over.

When asked what portions of the film director Francis Lawrence will shoot in IMAX, Hutcherson said: “They’re shooting, I think, all the stuff in the arena is going to be IMAX. So when you go see it in IMAX, you’ll see the regular movie when we’re in the Districts and in the Capitol. When you see us go up in the pod in the games, it will open up into IMAX. It will be amazing. It’s very cool.” [MTV]

Meanwhile, the veil of secrecy surrounding J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek Into Darkness has also been lifted…ish.

Paramount Pictures, via their press site, released the film’s first official story synopsis. Here it is:

“In Summer 2013, pioneering director J.J. Abrams will deliver an explosive action thriller that takes Star Trek Into Darkness.

“When the crew of the Enterprise is called back home, they find an unstoppable force of terror from within their own organization has detonated the fleet and everything it stands for, leaving our world in a state of crisis.

“With a personal score to settle, Captain Kirk leads a manhunt to a war-zone world to capture a one man weapon of mass destruction.

Marvel’s Kevin Feige teased plot details about another much-anticipated sequel, Iron Man 3. When asked how the film, starring Robert Downey, Jr., will link back to The Avengers, Feige said: “Iron Man 3 doesn’t feature any of the other Avengers, or Nick Fury showing up, or any of those world-blending conceits that the Phase One films had… We’re sticking to the vision for these films, and showing once again that these characters are just as interesting alone as they are together.” [Empire]

Frankenweenie screenwriter John August is in talks to adapt author R.J. Palacio’s bestseller, Wonder, for Lionsgate. The New York Times bestseller centers on a 10-year-old boy with an unusual deformity on his face, as he struggles to fit in with the kids at school. In addition to this year’s Frankenweenie, August also worked on the script for another 2012 Tim Burton film, Dark Shadows. [Variety]

Man of Steel director Zack Snyder is adding fuel to the fire that his take on Superman may indeed have a link to Warner Bros.’ Justice League. Speaking with The New York Post, Snyder danced around the subject of how Justice League will handle Superman’s involvement. When prodded further, Snyder said: “I can’t really say anything to that, because that’s a big spoiler. I will say, yeah, they trust me to keep them on course.” While it’s not exactly a confirmation that Snyder’s Superman will appear in Justice League, it’s not exactly a denial either. [The Playlist]

The news cycle was in overdrive on Tuesday, providing updates on two of the biggest franchises out there – The Hunger Games and Star Wars.

1. Disney Finds Writers for 2 Star Wars Sequels

There was a great disturbance in The Force on Tuesday, when The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that Simon Kinberg and Lawrence Kasdan will write and produce Episodes VIII and IX.

2. First Poster for Hunger Games: Catching Fire Revealed

Like the first Hunger Games movie before it, Lionsgate has released a motion poster unveiling the title treatment and logo for Catching Fire.

The much-anticipated sequel, starring Jennifer Lawrence as archer Katniss Everdeen, hits theaters November 22, 2013.

3. Man of Steel: New Trailer Announced

On December 14, Superman fans can expect a new trailer for Zack Snyder’s Man of Steel to run before prints of The Hobbit.

The Watchmen director confirmed the trailer’s release to MTV News on Tuesday, saying that he can’t wait for audiences to see “our crazy Man of Steel trailer”.

The trailer will be attached to both 2D and 3D prints of The Hobbit. The second Superman reboot in less than ten years, starring Henry Cavill as the popular DC hero, arrives June 14, 2013.

4. Fox Shuts Down Plans for Independence Day 3D

Those wanting to see Jeff Goldblum stop an alien invasion with a 1996 PowerBook, in 3D, are going to be disappointed.

Exhibitor Relations took to Twitter on Tuesday to report that 20^th Century Fox will no longer re-release Independence Day in 3D.

The post-converted project was scheduled to arrive in theaters on July 3, 2013, but it seems that the studio has changed their mind.

No specific reason for the cancellation was given, but Celebuzz will keep you updated as soon as word comes in.

5. Watch the New Trailer for Epic

Blue Sky Studios (Ice Age) released a new trailer Tuesday for their next animated title, Epic.

The film, described as Avatar by way of Honey, I Shrunk The Kids, centers on a shrunken girl (voiced by Amanda Seyfried) who is forced into a forest battle between Leafmen and their enemies.

Hunger Games’ Josh Hutcherson also lends his voice. Epic is scheduled for release May 14, 2013. Watch the trailer via YouTube below!

It’s a bird, it’s a plane, it’s a few blurry pics of Superman on set! It’s really hard to get a good shot of a super hero in action but we managed to find a few! 

Henry Cavill suited up for his role in the Man of Steel and we’re hoping those muscles are real! In addition to Henry, it seems that this movie is rounded out to be quite the star studded cast!

 Amy Adams will play Lois Lane to Henry’s Clark Kent, while Kevin Costner and Diane Lane will play Superman’s adoptive parents. Russell Crowe will take on the role of Jor-El, Superman’s birth father, and Julia Ormand will play his birth mother. It was also announced earlier this week that Laurence Fishburne will play Daily Planet editor-in-chief Perry White.

Hollywood has found their newest man of steel.

While there had been rumblings that True Blood star Joe Manganiello might nab the role, The Tudors star Henry Cavill has been officially been cast as Superman in the latest Zack Snyder reboot.

Execs at Warner Brothers told Deadline:

“He’s got an amazing quality. He doesn’t look too much like [Christopher] Reeve and [Brandon] Routh but he’s big and strong and he has a very modern feel to him. We’re really going to try and make Superman as contemporary as possible.”

The film’s director only had the best to say about the 27-year-old British actor, adding:

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time, and I am honored to be a part of his return to the big screen. I also join Warner Bros., Legendary and the producers in saying how excited we are about the casting of Henry. He is the perfect choice to don the cape and S shield.

The film is slated for a December 2012 release.
