The actor spills to Entertainment Weekly that he was dismayed to discover that his character, George O’Malley, was getting less and less screen time in the show’s fith season. And due to what he calls a “breakdown of communication” with Grey‘s executive producer Shonda Rhimes, he felt it was best to leave rather than inquire about his character’s diminishing presence.

“My five-year experience proved to me that I could not trust any answer that was given [about George],” says Knight. “And with respect, I’m going to leave it at that.”

And even though Grey’s Anatomy was responsible for launching Knight’s career, he says that he’s at peace with his choice to bid the show adieu.

“There just comes a time when it’s so clear that moving on is the best decision,” Knight asserts.

Well, depending on your perspective, it might be some bad news and some bad news.

E! Online reports that, after months of rumors and denials, T.R. Knight has officially confirmed that he won’t be returning to the series next season.

“Leaving Grey’s Anatomy was not an easy decision for me to make,” Knight said in an official statement on Wednesday. “I am extremely grateful to have had the opportunity to play this character and will miss my fellow cast and crew very much. I continue to wish them the very best, and wholeheartedly thank all of the fans who have supported me and the show with such passion and enthusiasm.”

Show creator Shonda Rhimes followed up with her own statement that read, “I think I speak for the entire Grey’s Anatomy family when I say we wish T.R. Knight the best in his future endeavors. He is an incredibly talented actor and a person whose strength of character is admired by all of us.”

And now, the other news. Despite a contentious relationship with Grey’s Anatomy—particularly with regard to the writers—Katherine Heigl will be returning to the show.

The show’s writers and producers had left the fate of Heigl’s character, Dr. Isobel “Izzie” Stevens, in the air by putting her under the knife for brain surgery after giving her stage 4 brain and liver cancer, but apparently she will live to see another season. 

It’s a television miracle!

America’s Next Top Model/Tyra Banks Show host Tyra Banks was bestowed with the Excellence in Media Award, which was presented to her by American Idol vet Clay Aiken.

Grey’s Anatomy star T.R. Knight was also on hand, to present financial guru Suze Orman with the Vito Russo Award, while talk-show legend Phil Dohanue was granted the Special Recognition Award.

Also in attendance: Sex and the City actor Chris Noth and several cast members of the hit sitcom Ugly Betty, including Vanessa Williams, Michael Urie and Ana Ortiz, who proudly flaunted her baby bump on the red carpet. (Ortiz is expecting a daughter with husband Noah Lebenzon in July.)

Ugly Betty is up for Outstanding Comedy Series in another awards ceremony that GLAAD has planned for April 18 in Los Angeles. Other nominees for that ceremony include the biopic Milk, Woody Allen‘s Vicky Cristina Barcelona, Desperate Housewives, Brothers & Sisters and Greek.

LA police have determined that actor T.R. Knight was responsible for a car accident last week that injured two people, according to TMZ.

Knight’s car collided with another car after he paused at a stop sign and then advanced at the intersection of Hollywood Blvd. and Stanley Ave. last week.

Authorities says that Knight did not give sufficient attention to whether there were any cars coming while he was stopped, moved forward into the intersection, and struck a car passing in front of him.

The driver of the other car was taken to the hospital, and a man riding with her also complained of minor injuries.

The LAPD did not ticket Knight because of their policy not to ticket for infractions that they were not present for.

Looks like Dr. George O’Malley got away with it. Until the insurance forms are processed.

E! reports that Knight’s car collided with another one while he was headed eastbound on Hollywood Blvd. at around 2:30 pm.

The crash happened at the cross street of Stanley Avenue, and another car carrying two passengers was involved as well.

One woman involved complained of discomfort and was taken to a hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.

Knight was unharmed, and was photographed comforting the woman after the crash while she was lying on the sidewalk in a neck brace.

TMZ reports that the crash is being investigated, but is thought to be an accident. No citations have been issued.

When Pickens was asked if Heigl, 30, was doffing her scrubs, Pickens replied, “Yes, she is. Wherever Katherine goes, I wish her nothing but the best.”

And her best friend in real life reportedly won’t be too far behind her.

“He’s going too,” Pickens said of Knight at an NAACP Awards luncheon. “He just wanted to pursue other career paths.”

Knight, 35, has reportedly wanted out of his Grey’s contract for some time and is “not shy about telling people,” according to a source. And some feel sooner is better than later.

“He complains to Katherine all the time,” a source on the set said. “The energy on set will be much better when he’s gone.”

The two actors’ characters haven’t fared well this season.

Knight has little screen time, and Heigl’s character was written to be in a love affair with her ex. Who’s dead.

Then again, Katherine probably isn’t the writers’ favorite actress to write for.

Heigl and Knight’s reps aren’t commenting, and ABC has not made an official announcement as of yet.

Today Michael Ausiello reports in his EW column that Knight, 35, hasn’t quit the show yet, but he is negotiating an exit.

An ABC insider says both ABC and Grey’s creator Shonda Rhimes are “working out the details now” for T.R. He’s technically under contract with the series.

Hollywood gossip blog Crazy Days and Nights kicked off the rumors yesterday by stating, “He is done and has quit.”

In contrast, EW’s ABC source says of Knight, “He’s still working…. He just feels that it’s time to move on.”

Actor Isaiah Washington was fired from Grey’s in 2007 for making homophobic remarks about Knight on the set in 2006.

Knight wasn’t publicly out of the closet at the time, but came out shortly after the incident.

An insider tells Ausiello that Knight was unhappy that it took Shonda Rhimes several months to condemn Washington’s remarks and eventually boot him from Grey’s. He has apparently been unhappy on the set of the show ever since.

Exactly how Seattle Grace’s “Dr. George O’Malley” will make his on-screen farewell remains to be seen.

The site claimed on Monday morning that T.R. Knight has walked off the set of ABC’s hit medical drama series Grey’s Anatomy, which is now in its fifth season.

Later in the afternoon, an update was posted which claimed, “I got a little more information from my source and they say, ‘He hasn’t attended table reads since episode 2. He is pissed and miserable and thinks his story line is stupid. He said goodbye to his hair and makeup people last week. He says he is done and has quit.’”

Knight, 35, has played Dr. George O’Malley on Grey’s Anatomy since it went on the air as a mid-season replacement for Boston Legal in March 2005. He currently lives with his 20-year-old boyfriend Mark Cornelson in Los Angeles.

Infamously, fellow initial cast member Isaiah Washington was fired from the series last year over a scandal involving homophobic remarks Washington is said to have made about Knight to another actor.

The Crazy Days and Nights source adds, “ABC has not released him. Shondra Rhimes, the producer, called him and he told her he had nothing to say. He has packed his dressing room.”

The site itself is run by “Ent Lawyer,” who purports to represent “both celebs and pseudo-celebs.” 

Thus far, no official news of Knight leaving Grey’s Anatomy has surfaced.

Calls have been left for comment with ABC.

UPDATE:

On Monday afternoon, Us online claimed that an unnamed Grey’s Anatomy rep has denied that T. R. Knight is displaying disgruntled behavior regarding his Dr. George O’Malley character.

“T.R. has never walked off set in the middle of filming. He attended the table read today and will be shooting this week, like any other week of production,” read the purported statement.

T.R. watchers and fans of the backstage drama at Grey’s may remember that the Isaiah Washington controversy was widely denied last year by official spokespersons.

“You look at the way another consummate professional [is] being treated because her character, her story line [has] potentially made producers uncomfortable,” Washington said.

“Now that I see what they’re doing to a show that I love and I care about, I think it’s disgusting,” Washington said. “The fact that Shonda [Rhimes, the executive producer and creator of the show] has been put in this position is extremely unfair,” he added.

Smith’s character, lesbian doctor Erica Hahn, will reportedly be suddenly written out of the show this month and she has been let go from the cast. Other reports allege that a new character played by actress Melissa George has had her sexual preference changed from bisexual to heterosexual via a directive from ABC network executives.

Rhimes has denied that Smith’s firing was because of the lesbian storyline, and gave a lack of “magic” and chemistry between Smith and Sara Ramirez‘s character as the reason in a statement.

And yes, you read that correctly, Isaiah Washington is suddenly standing up for lesbian rights. T.R. Knight must be reading this and going “what the-?”

Several boldfaced pairs made rounds at the movie’s unveiling, most making up the powerhouse cast that retells the life of activist and city official Harvey Milk.

Star Sean Penn and wife Robin Wright Penn seemed right at home with one another hitting Levi’s official premiere after-party for the film. This year saw the filing of divorce papers for the couple, followed by an Oscar hiccup, then a reconciliation.

Wright, dressed simply in a black military jacket, greeted moviegoers and execs while Penn chatted up castmate Josh Brolin at the bash, held at San Francisco City Hall.

Speaking of Brolin, he put his own divorce speculation to rest (perhaps) by bringing knockout bride Diane Lane.

A source, however, tells Celebuzz that Lane “tired quickly,” of the red carpet, breaking from Brolin to wait inside. Another source says, Brolin and Lane arrived in seperate cars to City Hall after the screening in Milk’s original stomping grounds The Castro.

Looking smitten (again, at an opportune time) was Grey’s Anaotmy star T.R. Knight and his May-December love Mark Cornleson, who was studying hospitality at an SF college before ditching to Hollywood to live with his famous man.

Then came broodster James Franco who kept a sweet mystery blonde, done up in a seafoam halter dress, three paces behind whenever cameras were around. Also Emile Hirsch with a black-clad brunette who walked the carpet with the young actor but wasn’t at his side during the party.

Love all around, folks! That’s how famous photog David LaChapelle felt, overheard by Celebuzz singing the praises of the movie’s “amazing tone and performances.”

Also spotted milling around the party was director Gus Van Sant, toasting his 1970s-set movie which is drenched in Levi’s 501′s and unthinkable haircuts.

“This cast, this movie, represents all the ideals of Levi’s,” the denim co’s President Robert Hanson told Celebuzz, “…courage and youthful, provocative energy.”

Right he is about all the cast—provocative on screen and off.

The 35-year-old Knight and his 19-year-old companion were spied having breakfast at Alcove bakery and cafe in the Los Feliz neighborhood of Los Angeles yesterday.

While the subject of their conversation is really nobody’s business, it’s safe to assume that they might have been making wedding plans. Knight recently told Extra that Cornelson’s “an amazing guy. I love being around him. I love what we have.”

Go for it, guys! Maybe you should ask Isaiah Washington to be your best man. He’d probably make an awesome toast.

Anne kept her smile on high beams throughout the evening, despite upheaval in her house of love.

The Daily Mail reports that the Devil Wears Prada star has dumped longtime boyfriend Raffaello Follieri. Raffaello’s legal entanglements had threatened to tarnish Anne’s more-pure-than-Katherine Heigl image.

Plus, Anne apparently didn’t like the idea of date night being restricted to a conjugal visit.

Bet Raffi’s gonna miss her by more than that much.
