Monday marks the birthday of Taylor Kitsch – and we’re thanking our lucky stars that this man is around in Hollywood.

With a jawline chiseled to perfection, a flawless body and the mastery of a smoldering stare, it’s no wonder that this hunk has girls swooning since his days as high school football hero Tim Riggins on Friday Night Lights.

Since then, Kitsch has continued to sizzle onscreen in movies such as Battleship, Savages and  John Carter (we’re so grateful that Mars doesnt do shirts).

Cloud Atlas isn’t the biggest box office disappointment ever, but it’s definitely its cousin.

This past weekend, the ambitious sci-fi epic finished number 3 at the box office, opening with $9.4 million. Budgeted at $100 million, Atlas is hard-pressed to make back its money.

Here’s a quick look at more big-budget films forever stuck in the red.

1. John Carter

Production Budget: $250 million

Domestic Gross: $73 million

You know your movie is a dud when its distributor can’t wait to tell the world how much money they’ve lost.

Less than two weeks after its release, Disney reported that they would take a $200 million loss on the Mars-set action epic. In doing so, the studio basically sentenced director Andrew Stanton and star Taylor Kitsch to Movie Jail.

2. Heaven’s Gate

Production Budget: $45 million

Domestic Gross: $4 million

Director Michael Cimino’s (The Deer Hunter) 1980 Western cost the equivalent of a gabillion dollars in today’s money, and forced distributor United Artists to go bankrupt. Which explains why the movie is still a sore subject, more than 30 years after its release.

3. Mars Needs Moms

Production Budget: $150 million

Domestic Gross: $6.9 million

Another costly bomb from Disney, this 2011 release forced The Mouse House to shut down the motion capture studio that made it.

Science is still trying to calculate the number of fu!@s audiences couldn’t give.

4. 1941

Production Budget: $32 million

Domestic Gross: $94.9 million

After scoring huge hits with Jaws and Close Encounters of the Third Kind, 1941 marked Steven Spielberg’s first major critical and box office disappointment.

The only good thing to come out of this 1979 WWII farce was that it forced the director to go “less is more” with his next project, Raiders of the Lost Ark.

5. Battleship

Production Budget: $209 million

Domestic Gross: $65 million

2012’s second big-budget flop headlined by Taylor Kitsch, director Peter Berg’s adaptation of the Hasbro board game proved to be a huge “miss” with audiences. In fact, that pun is arguably better than the entire film.

6. Ishtar

Production Budget: $55 million

Domestic Gross: $17 million

Like Heaven’s Gate before it, this 1987 comedy misfire is synonymous with “box office disaster.”

Starring Warren Beatty and Dustin Hoffman as American lounge singers who travel to Morocco and stumble upon a Cold War plot, Ishtar is still used today as an example of how not to make a movie.

7. The Adventures of Pluto Nash

Production Budget: $100 million

Domestic Gross: $4.2 million

2002’s mess of a sci-fi comedy marked the first of many big-budget bombs starring Eddie Murphy.

The Beverly Hills Cop star once quipped that he knows “the two or three people who saw” Pluto Nash, which is actually one or two people more than those that saw his next big movie fail…

8. Meet Dave

Production Budget: $60 million

Domestic Gross: $11 million

This Summer 2008 flop proved that Eddie Murphy failed to learn a valuable lesson from Pluto Nash: If he’s in a sci-fi comedy, audiences will stay away.

9. Gigli

Production Budget: $54 million

Domestic Gross: $6 million

When speaking of this 2003 comedy, one uses the same nervous, hushed tones as they would when talking about Voldemort.

Fun fact: The Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez vehicle dropped 82% in its second week, setting a record at the time.

10. Speed Racer

Production Budget: $120 million

Domestic Gross: $44 million

Based on the popular cartoon series, this long-anticipated from directors Andy and Lana Wachowski looked like a hit on paper. Then it hit theatres and, well, this 2008 release will just have to settle for slowly becoming a fan favorite.

11. Cutthroat Island

Production Budget: $98 million

Domestic Gross: $10 million

Director Renny Harlin made a pirate movie starring then-wife Geena Davis and Matthew Modine, and managed to bankrupt its studio in the process.

Everything in the above sentence makes sense. Too bad the filmmakers didn’t know then what they certainly know now.

Just weeks after completing filming in New Mexico on 2 Guns, an action thriller that co-stars Denzel Washington, Mark Wahlberg is back there again shooting Lone Survivor.

Although it appears to be coincidental that the location of the two shoots is the same, it’s no doubt convenient for Wahlberg, whose schedule has been incredibly busy in recent months not only filming these two films, but Michael Bay’s Pain & Gain as well.

New Mexico also offers a wide array of landscapes for filmmakers, a variety which comes in handy when a film demands an unusual backdrop but destination filming is financially untenable.

Why is Wahlberg’s Lone Survivor making its home in New Mexico?

Written and directed by Peter Berg (Battleship), the film chronicles “Operation Red Wing,” a failed 2005 mission in which a SEAL team was assigned the task of capturing or killing Taliban leader Admad Shad. Only one member of the team survived the mission.

New Mexico provides a comparable visual backdrop for the story, which took place in Afghanistan. The film also stars Taylor Kitsch (Battleship), Eric Bana (Hanna), Ben Foster (Contraband) and Emile Hirsch (Savages).

Wahlberg was also spotted away from set in Santa Fe eating dinner.

Many know Taylor Kitsch as lovable bad boy Tim Riggins from the TV series Friday Night Lights, but the 31-year-old actor is making a name for himself on the big screen.

Not only did the Candian actor star in John Carter, where he played the title character, but he was also part of the ensemble cast in the action flick Battleship.

Now, he has yet another film hitting theaters.

In the Oliver Stone-directed film Savages – out today – Kitsch takes on his most gritty role to date, playing a drug dealer who is in a three-way relationship with characters played by Blake Lively and Kick Ass star Aaron Johnson. After the guys’ shared girlfriend is kidnapped, they must face a deadly Mexican cartel to get her back.

Though reviews for the film are mixed, Kitsch has been receiving some praise for his performance.

The New York Daily News says “Kitsch finally reverses a bad year,” while The Hollywood Reporter says he does “reasonably well” in the film.

Blake Lively is one lucky girl.

In her new movie Savages, the 24-year-old stunner is involved in an unconventional, three-way relationship with characters played by Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson.

Since Lively’s character had some difficulty deciding which beau to choose in the movie, Celebuzz thought we should help her out by compiling the actors’ sexiest looks — for a full-on battle of the hunks.

Two action-packed movies hit the theaters this week, and the battle for the box office has officially begun.

This week, it’s a showdown between comic book favorite, The Amazing Spider-Man and fast-paced thriller, Savages.

Let’s take a look at these two highly anticipated movies.

First up we have The Amazing Spider-Man, starring Andrew Garfield alongside his on and off-screen sweetheart, Emma Stone. The movie is a reboot of the 2002 version starring Tobey Maguire.

The movie starts with the story of Peter Parker (Garfield) who is abandoned by his parents at a young age and eventually uncovers his father’s old briefcase that reveals the reason behind his parents’ disappearance and leads him to Dr. Curt Connors, his father’s former partner. Parker gets involved in a collision course with Connors’ alter ego and must make life-altering decisions to shape his fate as a hero.

Even though the movie was given a 72% rating from Rotten Tomatoes, it still made $35 million when it opened on Tuesday.

Next up is Savages, the thriller with a star-studded cast of John Travolta, Salma Hayek, Blake Lively and Friday Night Lights’ Taylor Kitsch. It tells the story of two entrepreneurs who run a homegrown marijuana business together and fall in love with the same girl (Lively). Things are going smoothly until the head of the Mexican Baja Cartel (Hayek) demand they combine and split profits. The three friends, with the help of a sneaky agent (Travolta), end up in a dangerous war against the cartel.

This action-packed thriller was given a 63% on Rotten Tomatoes and opens on Friday.

Also in theaters this week is the highly anticipated concert movie, Katy Perry: Part of Me that gives the audience a behind-the-scenes look at the pop star’s life and musical journey.

Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson star in director Oliver Stone’s gritty new drama Savages, in theaters now, and the trio share the screen with heavy hitters like John Travolta, Benicio Del Toro and Salma Hayek.

Coming off box-office flops John Carter and Battleship, this movie is particularly crucial for Kitsch, 31, who is best known from Friday Night Lights.

So if The Amazing Spider-Man isn’t for you, is Savages worth your bucks at the box office?

What are the critics saying about the new film:

Variety enjoyed the movie overall, saying Stone “makes a largely welcome reappearance” with Savages:

Pungent, nasty and teeming with colorful crooked types, the writer-director’s most vibrant (and violent) work in some time is a bracingly sordid saga of two young hash growers, the Orange County princess they love and the vicious Mexican cartel they get entangled with; imagine “Jules and Jim” with bombs and beheadings and you’re halfway there.

The New York Times calls the film a “half-great adaptation” of Don Winslow’s book. “Savages is a daylight noir, a western, a stoner buddy movie and a love story, which is to say that it is a bit of a mess,” said reviewer A.O. Scott, before adding: “But also a lot of fun.”

Savages received two stars from the Chicago Tribune, which points out that Benicio Del Toro is the “best of the show” but the film “has trouble making us care what happens to the beautiful people [Blake Lively, Taylor Kitsch, Aaron Johnson] at the center of the sun-baked fairy tale.”

However, the New York Daily News loved Blake and Taylor’s performances in particular, saying “Kitsch finally reverses a bad year” while “Lively follows through on the promise she showed in 2010’s The Town.”

In one of the harsher reviews, the Examiner found nothing redeeming about the film, aside from John Travolta:

At the end of the day, “Savages” was a disjointed mess as it was actively trying to be something it could never actually be and just got more nonsensical as the film went on with artificial plot twists and story devices that just had no business being there in the first place.

The Hollywood Reporter‘s bottom line: “Oliver Stone hauls the guns and drugs out of his trunk for this brutal, stylish, yet not-all-there film of Don Winslow’s best-seller.”

As for the acting, THR breaks it down, saying that Kitsch comes off “reasonably well” but that Lively doesn’t live up to her name coming off “more slack than slacker.” The reviewer continued:

The trio seem rather junior league, the Triple-A team, where All-Stars are required. They’re not bad, just not good enough when they have to tangle with the unbridled likes of John Travolta, Benicio Del Toro and Salma Hayek as assorted cohorts and adversaries.

In the film, Kitsch and Johnson play two up-and-coming entrepreneurs who launch a lucrative marijuana business while falling for the same girl (Lively).

As often happens in Stone movies, things quickly go awry when a Mexican Baja Cartel wants a piece of the business — not to mention Lively’s character, whom they eventually kidnap.

Director Oliver Stone‘s new movie Savages plot focuses on best friends and marijuana growers Ben (Aaron Johnson) and Chon (Taylor Kitsch) who face off against the Mexican drug cartel after they kidnap their shared girlfriend, played by Gossip Girl beauty Blake Lively.

The film’s opening scene features an intense sex scene between Kitsch and Lively, so when Celebuzz talked to the 31-year-old Friday Night Lights actor we asked how he and Blake, 24, prepared for the intimate scene. Did they just go for it? Did they use any safe words?

“Safe words! I love it,” Kitsch laughed. “A lot of sexual improv was going on there.”

Oh really?

“No,” he laughed. “I mean you block it out completely.”

Kitsch tells Celebuzz:

With Oliver we talked it out, God knows, we had two weeks of rehearsals, so we talked until we were about to pass out.  And then on the day– I think I knew Blake three, four days– that was the first week of shooting. It’s just about trusting Blake and Oliver like you do on any set.”

Though the racy scene featuring a naked Kitsch and Lively going at it aggressively on a couch may fulfill some moviegoers’ fantasies. Kitsch echoed the same sentiments as costar Lively, admitting that the intimate scenes aren’t as fun to film as they may be to watch.

“I was just glad it was over with to be honest,” agreed Taylor. “It’s very awkward to do, you know? But it’s such a big part of who [my character] is…and that’s how you meet him. It’s a pretty intense reveal, no pun intended. You know, it’s all part of it and I was glad to get the scene over with was in the first week.”

In the film, Blake is in a relationship with both Chon (Kitsch) and Ben, played by Aaron Johnson, but neither actor thinks that a three-way relationship is really possible.

“I think she’s just f–king greedy, to be honest!” laughed Johnson.

Although Taylor Kitsch confirmed earlier this week that he would not be playing Finnick Odair in Catching Fire, speculation continued over the possibility the Savages actor was still under consideration for a different role in the upcoming film.

Following a press conference Friday for Savages, Kitsch told Celebuzz that he was “definitely out” and wouldn’t be joining Jennifer Lawrence for the upcoming sequel to The Hunger Games.

The film’s casting news has been lighting up the internet. Read who will be joining the cast.

New reports confirmed that producers have offered Oscar-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman the role Plutarch Heavensbee.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the actor, 44, would portray the pivotal role as the new Gamemaker at the Capitol after Seneca Crane (Wes Bentley) was killed at the end of The Hunger Games.

Reps for the Oscar-winning actor have yet to confirm the offer.

Twilight hunk Robert Pattinson recently slammed reports that he’d be in Catching Fire. During the Cannes Film Festival, the 26-year-old actor took time to address recent rumors of him being offered for a role.

“I woke up this morning and saw all these things about me being cast in The Hunger Games,” he told USA Today. “I was kind of curious for a second. So I called my agent.”

“(My agent) was like no one’s going to offer you that part,” he reported, breaking into a laugh. “I was like, thanks for the reassurance.”

The film is currently slated to be released on November 22, 2013.

The two movies hitting theaters this weekend couldn’t be more different, but they do have one thing in common — Brooklyn Decker!

That’s right, the 25-year-old model turned actress has the distinct honor of having two different films hit theaters on the same day, one hilarious rom-com and the other an action-packed blockbuster. First up for Ms. Decker, we have Battleship, based on the classic board game, which also stars Friday Night Lights‘ Taylor Kitsch, True Blood hunk Alexander Skarsgard, and “S & M”  singer Rihanna. The film is all about an alien attack on the high seas, and is one of summer’s first big flicks to be released.

In contrast, Brooklyn’s other film hitting theaters couldn’t be any more different.

Based on the book of the same name, What to Expect When You’re Expecting boasts an all-star cast of Hollywood heavy hitters, whose characters are all having babies one way or another. From Cameron Diaz to Jennifer Lopez, there is no shortage of stars in this movie.

Also in theaters is Sacha Baron Cohen‘s The Dictator, which is definitely not doing as well as projected.

This weekend is shaping up to be quite a showdown at the box office! With all the options, Celebuzz is giving you the low down on whats out and what to catch in theaters!

First up, we have John Carter which is the first post Friday Night Lights offering from Taylor Kitsch! The Disney action flick focuses on a Civil War vet who is tranported to Mars, which is inhabited by 12 foot tall barbarians! After being taken prisoner by these creatures, he escapes and meets a princess in need of a hero.

In complete contrast to that, we have the new Elizabeth Olsen thriller Silent House.  The spooky tale based on real events centers around a young woman who finds herself trapped in her family’s secluded lake house.  The film uses very clever cinematography which features a complete single uninterrupted shot from start to finish.  This one will have you on the edge of your seats!

Also opening in limited release this weekend is the hilarious ensemble comedy Friends With Kids! This one is packed full of some your favorite stars including Jon Hamm, Kristen Wiig, Maya Rudolph, and Megan Fox! The plot revolves around two friends played by Adam Scott and Jennifer Westfeldt (who also wrote and directed).  The two decide to have a child together but keep their friendship strictly platonic after obseving the effects having kids had on their friends romantic relationships.

We’ve been drooling over Taylor Kitsch‘s dreaminess for quite some time, and now the John Carter star is talking a bit about how it feels to be considered such a hunky fella. In an interview with MTV’s Josh Horowitz, the 30-year-old Canadian actor admits that people seeing him as a heartthrob “gets old,” but quickly jokes “I only have about 6,200 mirrors at my house. It’s no big deal. Who doesn’t?”

Handsome and funny? Just another reason to love him!

Taylor (best known for his role as Tim Riggins on Friday Night Lights) also talks a bit about a possibly film based on the hit TV show, saying:

“First of all, it would be very hard to say no to [Peter] Berg. Secondly, I love that guy [Riggins], and he is truly a huge reason why I’m here, but I love the way we left him, I truly do. I’d love to read this script that we have just floating around.”

It just does not get much more handsome than Taylor Kitsch.

On Wednesday night, the 30-year-old Canadian actor (best known for his role as Tim Riggins on Friday Night Lights) suited up for the premiere of his latest film, John Carter. Looking absolutely and positively dapper, he greeted hoards of fans, and smiled for the cameras.

Though FNL is definitely missed, we’re excited to see Taylor on the big screen!

Not only does TK have John Carter being released on March 9 (which was written and directed by Pixar’s Andrew Stanton), but he will also star in Battleship alongside Alexander Skaarsgard, Rihanna, and Brooklyn Decker, later this year.

Taylor recently spoked to TooFab about the possibility of a Friday Night Lights movie, and it sounds like he might be on board:

“I love the way we ended it, I do. I love the way that he’s [Riggins'] building a home on that property of his and it goes back to the pilot speech of ‘Texas Forever.’ I have such great closure with that. It would have to be beyond phenomenal for me to dive in again. I love the way it was left for my character.”

The movie Battleship combines the hottest vampire on True Blood Alexander Skarsgard against the hottest Friday Night Lights football player Taylor Kitsch. The gorgeous costars posed alongside each other (swoon!) as they promoted the film at Hasbro’s American International Toy Fair showroom in New York on Monday. 

Both boys were looking quite ruggid, Alex in a denim shirt and Taylor sporting some sexy stubble. Also at the event was director Peter Berg who also worked with Taylor on FNL. As we remember the stars who excelled this year and recall the movies and TV shows that delighted us, it’s easy to forget that 2012 was a tough year for some of our favorite celebrities.

It’s hard to think of people who are richer, more famous and better looking than we are as underdogs, but after considering the hard times endured by some talented stars whose movies flopped or records didn’t sell, some sympathy is inevitable.
