Winona Ryder turns 41 today, and in honor of the Reality Bites star’s birthday, we’re taking a look back at her style over the years.

From girly to grunge to glam, Ryder’s style has been all over the map, though she’s remained loyal to her short pixie cut and red carpet red lips.

One of the original fashion muses to Marc Jacobs, Ryder was the poster child of the ’90s grunge-era fashion, donning leather jackets, head-to-toe black, and ripped jeans while dating bad boy Johnny Depp.

As she matured, so did her style, and Ryder’s wardrobe became more feminine, whether she was wearing a printed dress or a glam gown.

After being arrested for shoplifting, the actress embraced her very own “age of innocence” in glam, ladylike styles for a modern take on Grace Kelly.

And as she’s left her 30s behind and entered her 40s, Ryder has developed a more sophisticated all-black uniform of tailored separates and glam dresses, almost always with a three-quarter hemline to enhance her petite frame.

Tim Burton and Winona Ryder are a match made in heaven — or hell, to be frank.

On Friday, the Nightmare Before Christmas director and “king of all-things Halloween” will spook audiences in another one of his family-friendly, comically creepy films, Frankenweenie — but not without the help of one of his favorite leading ladies.

In the modern-day take on the age-old tale of Frankenstein, Ryder stars as Elsa Van Helsing, the girl-next-door love interest to Victor, a young boy who attempts to bring his beloved dog Sparky back from the dead with a science experiment.

And the apple doesn’t fall very far from the Tim Burton tree.

Ms. Van Helsing bears a striking resemblance to an iconic Burton character played by Ryder in a cult classic 20 years prior.

So what was the classic film that lead to Ryder’s silver screen success?

Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice!

The 1988 fan-favorite ghost story starred Ryder as young goth girl Lydia Deetz, who, along with her pretentious family, moves into a home inhabited by a ghost couple. Ever the rebel, young Lydia befriends the ghosts. It’s not until the couple summons the lewd, twisted Beetlejuice to frighten away her parents, that Lydia must come to their rescue.

As Ryder told Celebuzz in an interview earlier this week, Burton & Beetlejuice are largely responsible for the star’s fame. “On a professional level, he did sort of give me a career, cause I don’t honestly know what other roles I would have.”

Although the main character in Tim Burton’s Frankenweenie is a 10-year-old amateur inventor named Victor, the most important role in the film may be played by Martin Landau.

As Mr. Ryzkruski, a caustic but passionate teacher who inspires the young man to try the experiment that brings his late dog back to life, Landau channels his Ed Wood character Bela Lugosi while sending a hilariously well-timed message about the value of education.

Celebuzz spoke to Landau in Austin, TX, at Fantastic Fest, where the iconic actor appeared at a premiere screening of Frankenweenie alongside Burton and co-star Winona Ryder.

What legendary director did Landau say ‘no’ to after being hand-picked for a part?

In addition to discussing his character in the film – and his oddball, abrasive disposition – Landau reflected on the famous filmmakers he’s worked with, and revealed what sorts of challenges he still hopes to face.

Celebuzz: Having now worked with Tim Burton a few times, are there any other filmmakers or films that you’ve been in that inspire the kind of fandom that his do?

Martin Landau: This is the third time I worked with Tim because I did Sleepy Hollow — it was after the film was finished, literally finished, and he felt the character was talked about and needed to be seen. So my head goes flying off and stuff — I went and shot for a couple of days with Tim in Yonkers, New York in a factory where we could shoot day for night with a stage coach and stuff and my head flying off. But a good director creates a playground for actors, and Tim is like that, but so is Francis Ford Coppola, and so is Woody Allen who doesn’t direct at all. You’re on your own; he doesn’t like what you’re doing, he fires you. I mean, literally. I won’t even tell you the actors he’s fired. But he says, “I don’t know how to talk to actors. I hire them and I expect they know what they’re doing and if they don’t I got another actor.” That’s pretty callous but it’s how he works. And he doesn’t direct, so those performances in Woody Allen’s movies happen out of the actors and out of the environment – which is Tim’s great gift. We have a kind of a connection; I can’t explain it other than he doesn’t have to finish a sentence and I know what he wants. And it’s just we have a good time and it’s creative and he doesn’t have to use a lot of language with me and I don’t have to talk a great deal about my character either. I can just do it.

But my whole thinking is I commit with stuff. I see the arc, I take it – so this character [in Frankenweenie] comes from a particular environment. As a result, and because of his physiology has a certain kind of an emotional range and problems and predilections and pet peeves, and each one is different. This character was described as a European teacher, but not specifically German, not Russian, not Hungarian, but European — the script basically says that. So I created a sort of generic European accent that’s not quite from any one place. And I also saw him as a zealot who loves what he does, eccentric as hell, passionate, and not diplomatic. You’re not going to keep your job as a teacher in a school if you insult the parents and call them stupid. I mean, Henry Kissinger wouldn’t do that. But the thing that’s interesting about it is you do the voice before the animation, but if I had been on camera, I would have played it exactly as that animation. It looks a little like me in the old days – when I had black hair and there’s something about it’s almost like a character me and Vincent mixed up, but I saw it behaviorally and when I saw the film I said, “Jesus, that’s exactly as I would have done it.” I was actually pleased because it’s like, wow, behaviorally it’s exactly the way I envisioned it when I did the voice, which is odd.

CB: Having worked with so many iconic filmmakers, do you see an essential quality in the people whom we think of as these auteurs, from Hitchcock to Tim Burton, that they share in common?

ML: The essential quality is the fact that they like actors, trust actors, trust [their] imagination and create a playground – cast the right actor and them play. All an audience wants to believe is what’s going on up there is happening for the first time ever. That’s what good theater is about; that’s what acting is about. You don’t want to see the rehearsals, you don’t want to see the glumness and the slickness. There are a lot of movie stars who will remain nameless who are terrible actors — and predictable. You know the end of the scene before it happens. You know where it’s going. Very few people, even in the film business, know anything about acting. The public certainly doesn’t. So [my character’s] impatience is something I can understand in my own terms. I mean, I do humanize every character and make him mine so that I can play an outlandish character who’s idiosyncratic as hell. I mean, but I understand it. For Christ sake, they don’t know about acting. Do you know what I’m saying? I mean, but he’s also very gentle and kind — and he feels a parent should know more than they do. They’ve got kids and they’ve got a responsibility and he blatantly says it. He’s going to be fired for every job he ever has if he continues this, and I like that about him.

CB: At this point, having taken on so many different acting opportunities, is there anything that you feel like that you have not really tackled that you’d still like to – not even necessarily a specific role but some sort of challenge?

ML: Specific role it wouldn’t be, but Martin Scorsese has wanted me a couple times for roles that I turned down. They’re not roles. And I said, “Ask me to do something that scares me.” In Casino, one of the club owners – Don Rickles played it beautifully, but I passed on it. It’s not about roles, it’s about a role I don’t know where to start. That I love. Where do I begin, because it makes me do my work very diligently? So I don’t know what it is that I would love to do unless I could read it and say, ah, this is going to be tough for me. That’s what I want to do. There’s a lot of scripts where I’m an old guy sitting at a table and grunting these days, who is the brunt of a lot of ridicule from the younger people. I won’t do that part. I turned that part down and I’ve seen that part too many times. I won’t do that.

CB: Well, how tough then is it to find roles that scare you or is there a certain amount of responsibility placed on you? Say you get a role in a Martin Scorsese movie that you see, you want to work with him badly enough and the role’s maybe not that interesting. Is there a way that you can bring to it your own creativity to make it interesting?

ML: If it’s not that interesting, I could phone it in. I played that role. I don’t want to do that — and I told him.

While Pee Wee’s Big Adventure was Tim Burton’s first feature, it was his followup, Beetlejuice that gave the world its first look at the eccentric director’s quirky aesthetic.

And now there’s talk of a sequel being written, but nothing definitive from Burton as to whether or not he will direct.

“I love the character but if it’s a good script, then it’s great,” he commented. “But there’s no point for me really thinking about it until we see it.”

Who else wants to see the undead creature resuscitated again?

Burton’s not the only one hoping for a good script. For Winona Ryder, Beetlejuice was her big break. Recently she recalled auditioning for the movie back in 1987.

While she awaited her turn to meet the director, a stranger sat down next to her and soon she found herself in a conversation with the odd-looking man about movies and her favorite bands.

When he finally asked her what she was doing there, she said she was auditioning for a movie called Beetlejuice.

The man then stood up and introduced himself as Tim Burton. After that, the part was hers.

“With Tim, he’s maybe one of my favorite people, most special people,” Ryder told Celebuzz. “On a professional level, he did sort of give me a career, cause I don’t honestly know what other roles I would have.”

In his latest movie, Frankenweenie, Ryder’s character is Elsa Van Helsing, the strange little girl next door to Victor, an eccentric kid who brings his pet dog back to life after an accident.

The black and white stop-motion movie is actually a remake of Burton’s 1984 live-action short of the same name.

“I love working with her and haven’t worked with her in many years,” he said of Ryder. “Because it was a project that means a lot to me, it was nice to have somebody like her, who I love.”

For Ryder, the admiration is mutual. In addition to Beetlejuice, she reunited with Burton on Edward Scissorhands; she worked with Johnny Depp, whom she eventually became engaged to. The relationship ended after three years.

“With Tim, it’s just a complete trust, and to be asked to do something that is so personal to him is incredibly humbling,” smiled Ryder. “It’s such a special movie for me and for, I think, everyone involved. I feel like it’s beaming off of my face!”

Winona Ryder defied age on Thursday as she stepped onto the red carpet for the Venice Film Festival premiere of her new movie The Iceman.

Ryder, 40, stunned in a black laced dress by Dolce and Gabbana, which she matched with a small black clutch and long, dangling earrings. She was joined on the carpet by her co-stars, Ray Liotta and Michael Shannon.

The film, which opened to stellar reviews, stars Shannon as real-life contract killer Richard Kuklinski.

Ryder, who looks as good here as she did at the peak of her career in the ’90s, has kept a mostly low profile after she was caught shoplifting at Saks Fifth Avenue, in 2001.

Her most recent film credits include Black Swan and a brief, slightly bizarre, cameo in the 2009 blockbuster Star Trek.

Later this year, she’ll lend her voice to the Tim Burton animated movie Frankenweenie, out Oct. 5. Check out the trailer, below.

Three’s a trend! Fashionable female stars Leighton Meester, Winona Ryder and Halle Berry have been rocking suits on the red carpet – could this be one of Hollywood’s newest movements?

Leighton won approval from our Celebuzz readers when she sported a female version of a classic men’s suit at the 20th Annual Gotham Independent Film Awards on Monday night. Her style secret? Well-tailored pants that end at the ankle and pairing the masculine suit with feminine black pumps.

Meanwhile, Winona sported an all-black suit at the New York premiere of Black Swan in New York City on Tuesday night. The Girl, Interrupted star accessorized her masculine suit with a silver necklace and smokey eye make-up.

Halle showed off the sexy side of menswear when she walked the red carpet at the Frankie and Alice premiere in a gold and black brocade suit. She jumped up the sexiness factor by pairing the suit with a very low cut black blouse.

Black Swan took over the Toronto Film Festival for its premiere last night, and Natalie Portman, Winona Ryder, Mila Kunis and a handful of other stars were on the red carpet to celebrate director Darren Aronofsky’s latest spectacle.

Billed as a psychological thriller set in the hardcore world of New York City ballet, the film won’t have it’s initial limited release until December 1st, but has already received high praise from the critic’s circle. Kirk Honeycutt of The Hollywood Reporter called the film “an instant guilty pleasure.” Peter Debruge of Variety labeled Black Swan as a “wicked, sexy and ultimately devastating study of a young dancer’s all-consuming ambition.”

Discerning moviegoers with a good memory will note that this film is Aronovsky’s follow-up to his 2008 award winning movie The Wrestler starring Mickey Rourke and Marisa Tomei.

Mickey Rourke decided to drum up some drama yesterday when he dropped a blind item about an unnamed “pain in the a**” actress he worked with recently.

Rourke told MovieHole (via Starpulse) that he had recently worked with an actress that is beloved by the public for her acting talents but is actually a terrified thespian on set. From Rourke:

I worked with an actress recently who, despite having a reputation as a good actress, s**ts herself when that little red light comes on. She’s fooled everyone into thinking she’s a lot better than she is. Working with someone like that is a pain in the a**.

However, don’t think that Rourke is talking about Megan Fox. The actor gushed about her being a fabulous actress to work with who “knows how to do her homework.”

The Wrestler director Darren Aronofsky‘s upcoming film Black Swan is shaping up to be quite the intriguing affair.

Slash Film reports that Girl, Interrupted actress Winona Ryder has signed on for the supernatural thriller, which begins filming in New York in a few weeks and follows the intrigue of competing dancers in the New York City Ballet.

As dedicated cinema fans already know, the film will also star Natalie Portman and Mila Kunis, who will reportedly engage in an “angry, aggressive” sex scene together.

Will Winona, who’ll reportedly play a dancer who’s “near the end of her career,” get in on the action?

One thing’s for sure; Portman and Kunis should be careful that Ryder doesn’t steal the show. Because word is she has a little bit of experience in that sort of thing…

Is Hollywood capable of doing anything besides churning out remakes these days?

Variety reports that a remake of the 1989 Winona Ryder/Christian Slater movie Heathers is underway for the small screen.

The original film chronicled the escapades of two high-school outcasts who offed a snotty clique of girls—all named Heather—one by one, masking the murders as suicides.

“We had the title, and talked about doing a film remake at times,” says executive producer Gary Lucchesi. “But doing it for TV seemed like a fresh and original idea.”

Glad they’re coming up with at least one fresh and original idea!

Everybody and their mother came out to the premiere of Star Trek on Thursday in Los Angeles.

Held at the Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood, California, the red carpet was filled with beautiful people, including the film’s hot studs, Zachary Quinto (on the arm of Winona Ryder!!!) and Chris Pine.

Other stars who showed up to see the sexed-up version of the classic film include supermodel Heidi Klum, Eric Bana, Hayden Panettiere, a newly blonde Leighton Meester, Peter Facinelli, Michelle Monaghan, Neil Patrick Harris, Sophia Bush, Amanda Bynes, Nicollette Sheridan, Tori Spelling, Kristin Cavallari and Kendra Wilkinson.

The revamped, sexed-up new Star Trek movie hits theaters on May 8, and to whet the public’s appetite Paramount has released a handful of new stills from the sure-to-be-blockbuster, which has already earned a sequel.

The film, directed by Lost creator J.J. Abrams, stars Chris Pine as Captain Kirk, Heroes‘ Zachary Quinto as Spock, Simon Pegg as Scotty and Winona Ryder as Amanda Grayson.

Winona Ryder wasn’t flying so high today during a flight to London’s Heathrow Airport, the Associated Press reports.

The 37-year-old actress’s British Airways flight from Los Angeles to London requested priority landing at Heathrow when it was discovered that Ryder “required medical attention.” Ryder was briefly treated at a west London hospital “as a precaution,” according to her publicist, Mara Buxbaum, and is “fine now.”

A statement released by British Airways notes, “Our cabin crew looked after the female passenger [Ryder] as much as they could onboard and our passenger services staff also accompanied her to the local hospital.” The statement added, “We wish her well.”

Buxbaum declined to release the nature of the illness.

In 2001, Ryder was arrested for shoplifting at Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills and was found to be in possession of numerous prescription pills. Ryder told Vogue magazine in August that she was on the painkiller Oxycodone at the time, and the drug had left her “confused.”

No word on whether Ryder’s personal medication stash was similarly stocked when she took ill today.

Then again, with Ryder’s demanding social schedule, perhaps she was just suffering from exhaustion during the flight.

The three slender show-biz luminaries took front row side-by-side at the DKNY show at Bryant Park in New York yesterday. The show was part of the Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Spring 2009 festivities.
