Now trending is the case of slain Florida teenager, Trayvon Martin, who was gunned down in a gated community by a neighborhood watchman. 

On February 26 of this year, a 17 year-old-boy named Trayvon Martin was shot in Florida by a man who claimed to be a neighborhood watchman in a gated community.  The boy was unarmed and walking through the community when he was pursued by George Zimmerman – who claimed the boy looked “suspicious.”  At some point during the pursuit of the boy, Zimmerman shot and killed him, claiming that he felt “threatened.”

There has been an outcry by many celebrities to bring attention to this case, specifically that the killer is still free and has yet to be charged with the murder. From Anderson Cooper to Gabrielle Union, Star Jones, and John Legend, here’s what some celebs are saying about this very controversial case:

After initially bowing out of the race peacefully following the announcement that he did not meet residency requirements, the ex-Fugees singer chose to challenge the ruling, tweeting:

We have met all the requirements set by the laws. And the law must be Respected.

The rules state a candidate must live in Haiti for the five consecutive years preceding the election. Wyclef contends that because he is and has been a goodwill ambassador for Haiti, he should not be held to this.

And in an audio clip released today to the media, Wyclef spat fire at his adversaries:

Even before our work began, friends in Haiti and abroad had warned me that much trickery would be used to block me. The result: CEP has proved it true. They violated the Constitution to benefit their families and their friends who continue to live off the people’s money. Are you going to continue to support people who do not respect the fundamental law of the country?

To further complicate matters, Pierre Thibaut, the director of communication of the election council, has noted that an appeal by Wyclef can only be heard by the election council  – the committee that already denied him – because there is no higher power in this case.

The former Fugees leader, who announced his intentions to run for President in his homeland of Haiti earlier this month, has reportedly not made the cut for the election.

According to a Haitian election official who spoke on Thursday, the musician-activist’s name isn’t included among a list of approved candidates that is expected to be made public today:

“He is not on the list as I speak.”

The 40-year-old’s candidacy has been mired in controversy ever since he threw his hat into the ring in early August, with critics questioning both his eligibility for the office—though born in Haiti, he left when he was nine years old—and the accounting irregularities of his charity organization Yéle, which has provided relief following Haiti’s devastating quake in January.

Haiti’s presidential election will be held on November 28.

The former Fugees frontman, who announced earlier this week that he’s throwing his hat into the ring in Haiti’s upcoming presidential election, owes $2.1 million to the Internal Revenue Service, according to documents unearthed by The Smoking Gun. Jean was slapped with a tax lien in May, after falling behind on payments of his debt. The money is owed on his 2006, 2007 and 2008 income.

The musician-activist addressed the tax situation on Larry King Live on Thursday, telling the talk show host,

“I have great lawyers, and I have great business people that work with me… There is no situation of Wyclef Jean that we will ignore. We respect the IRS very much… Any personal Wyclef matters are being handled as we speak. Everything is paid up.”

Sean, who has been living in Haiti for the past six months after a deadly earthquake rocked the politically-fragile nation, said that he was “suspicious” of the 37-year-old former Fugees member’s presidential bid. Sean told Wolf Blitzer on CNN that Wyclef had been largely absent from the relief effort in Haiti:

This is somebody who’s going to receive an enormous amount of support from the United States, and I have to say I’m very suspicious of it, simply because he, as an ambassador at large, has been virtually silent. For those of us in Haiti, he has been a non-presence.

The Oscar-winning Penn has become well-known in Hollywood for his political activism and philanthropy. After the 2010 Haitis earthquake, Sean co-founded the J/P Haitian Relief Organization and is currently running a 55,000 person tent camp for people who have been displaced by the earthquake.

Meanwhile, Jean — who has a song titled “If I Was President” — started the Yele Haiti foundation in 2005, which has been highly criticized as being “generally shady.” Wyclef allegedly paid his mistress more than $100,000 through his charity and reportedly demanded $100,000 from a fundraiser in his hometown in Haiti. Wyclef has brushed off the allegations but formally resigned from the charity on Thursday, just hours before he officially announced his bid for president.

These were all points that Sean focused on when he criticized Wyclef’s political bid. Sean mentioned that this charity allegations “has to be looked into” and says that he is worried that Wyclef is being sponsored by American corporations who are “opportunists on the back of the Haitian people.”

However, Sean did mention that he hopes that Wyclef does speak up more for Haiti and get involved with the relief efforts…just as long as he doesn’t run for president:

I haven’t seen or heard anything of [Wyclef Jean] in these last six months that I’ve been in Haiti. I think he’s an important voice. I hope he doesn’t sacrifice that voice by taking the eye off the very devastating realities on the ground. I want to see someone who’s really, really willing to sacrifice for their country, and not just someone who I personally saw with vulgar entourage of vehicles that demonstrated a wealth in Haiti that, in context, I felt was a very obscene demonstration.

Jean has been a tireless proponent for Haiti for some time through his Yele Foundation, and was instrumental in getting relief to Haiti following January’s devastating earthquake.

Though details are still sparse, Pierre Eric Jean-Jacques, former head of the country’s Chamber of Deputies, tells the Associated Press that Jean will run under Jean-Jacques’ Ansanm Nou Fo coalition. The coalition’s name translates to “together we are strong” in Creole. 

According to Jean-Jacques,

“Yes, we have an agreement (with Jean). But he’s the one who has to announce it first.”

Haiti’s presidential election will be held on November 28.

Check out the surreal footage from this weekend’s Nobel Concert in Oslo, just one of the many ceremonies honoring Barack Obama, recipient of this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.

As part of the recurring Sundance Channel series, where two esteemed personalities are paired to just let genius happen, Wyclef Jean and Venus Williams go head to head this Thursday.

The result is some balling (both tennis and basketball are ventured by super-athletic Williams and half pint visionary Jean to results that are all-too predictable) and a serious jam session.

So serious that Jean made up a little ditty right on the spot for the title winner.

“Her name was Venus, Master of the Universe,” Jean croons to Serena‘s sister, “I am so humbled in the presence of a goddess.”

“The song that he wrote for me, I thought it was some surprise he had planned for me maybe, that he had the song ready but he was just free-flowing,” she said of the little rhyme.
