#1 - Though she was crowned at Westminster Abbey on June 2nd, 1953, Queen Elizabeth II actually acceded to the throne on February 6th, 1952. King George VI, Elizabeth's father, passed away while she was in Kenya with her husband, Prince Philip. Upon arriving back in England, Princess Elizabeth, Duchess of Edinburgh had become Queen Elizabeth II. There is never a lapse between two ruling monarchs, hence the saying: "the King is dead. Long live the Queen!" (or King, depending on who inherits the throne).
