BEST PERFORMANCE BY AN ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE – COMEDY OR MUSICAL: Meryl Streep, 'Hope Springs'
The devil. Streep made a deal with the devil. That’s the only sound explanation for how she can be so good in everything she does, especially in 'Hope Springs'. The dramedy, which centers on a couple struggling with the downslope of their 30-year marriage, casts Streep as Kay, a loyal but lonely housewife who wants her husband Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) to care about her the same way he cares about The Golf Channel. The script requires Streep to go from tearful counseling sessions to engaging in comedic sex acts in a movie theater and she does it effortlessly; never once playing it too much for laughs and always giving the story exactly what it needs. Popular with critics and the Hollywood Foreign Press, Streep’s shot at the award is slim, but that doesn’t mean you should overlook one of the most underrated performances of her career. Chances of winning: It’s an honor just to be nominated.
