BEST MOTION PICTURE – DRAMA: Lincoln
Lincoln easily could have come off as one, big anamorphic Wiki entry come to life, but director Steven Spielberg and screenwriter Tony Kushner wisely grounded the bio-pic in the dramatic politics of the time rather than the historical minutia. The end result is a sharply written, character-driven account of Abe Lincoln’s struggle to abolish slavery, bolstered by Daniel Day-Lewis’ transformative performance in the title role and Spielberg’s confident direction. Despite the movie ending ten minutes past the point where it should, Lincoln makes a good case for being considered as one of Spielberg’s best. Chances of winning: Quite high.
